My first time visiting this restaurant all the way from the Peninsula, so I decided to give it a try. Definitely not what I expected! We were seated outside since the inside was full. The outside is a nice atmosphere but the flys were pretty annoying landing on myself or on the table. They do have these fans to deter the flys but they only help so much. We were welcome by a waitress who brought us to a table. I ordered a "WELL DONE" Angus burger but was brought a MEDIUM RARE, so I was pretty disappointed by that. What chef doesn't know how to prepare WELL DONE BURGER! The only good thing that I enjoyed was the taste of the beef despite having blood dripping out of my buns. This restaurant has so many inconsistencies that I didn't know who my waiter was. Mind you they were not that busy yet the didn't have the decency to come out of the restaurant to ask us "how are food was going" or if we needed our water cups to be refilled! This is not the first time my family has been here but we just came here today and it took very long to be seated which is not an absurd issue but I found it odd that the waiters would just walk past us and not acknowledge us at all to at least give us a wait time. When they finally did they didn't have indoor seating and seated us outside which the patio is nice although it was very hot. Our waiter was Joe she was very nice which made the experience better she's probably the best part of our experience. The food was also quite good which also made the experience better. The service was friendly and the ambience is adorable but the food was just meh. The Brussel sprout appetizer was super yummy and that was our favorite dish. The truffle Mac n cheese was also good but we were not fans of the salmon Rilettes or the mushroom tacos. The salmon rilettes didn't taste smoked at all just fishy and quite plain and the mushroom tacos was wrapped in a single tortilla and immediately fell apart through the corn shell and the mushroom moisture was also quite plain. We probably should've sat inside because despite the outdoor bistro area being adorable there was an abundance of flies. To start, we ordered the Crispy Calamari and Shrimp appetizer -- everyone enjoyed it. One person in our group had raved about the duck from a previous visit, calling it the best she'd ever had. Based on that, I ordered the duck salad, and she ordered the duck entrée from the fine dining menu. Unfortunately, the duck was disappointing -- it was chewy, and the skin was inedible. She agreed it was nothing like what she'd had before. On a positive note, my salad portion was tasty, and the champagne vanilla vinaigrette was delicious. My wife had the seafood special: scallops with risotto. I tried a bite -- they were very good. Others at our table ordered the Steak Frites and the Salmon Béarnaise, and both were satisfied. If my salad had come with salmon instead of the duck, this would have easily been a four-star experience. One thing to note: they add a mandatory 20% gratuity for parties of six or more (a bit of an oxymoron -- mandatory gratuity). The server was friendly but not quite attentive enough to justify that tip in my opinion -- but we paid it nonetheless. Overall, I'd recommend trying anything except the duck. First time at Murphys and was walking at downtown on a Sunday night. We loved the overall vibe of the place and the outdoor seating looked so welcoming. It was a cold night so we were glad that they had heating available although they only had three working heaters at that time. Wanted something light so an appetizer, burger, and drink was more than enough for me and my husband. Service was friendly but I guess they were a bit busy. Food arrived on time but we had to go inside to pay since they were taking a bit of time to go back in the outside dining area. Best Restaurant in a 50 mile range, hands down. You'll need a reservation to sit at the front dining area. There are two different bars as well. The food is great specially those blue cheese stuffed; smoked dates that are fantastic when paired with Pinot. We stopped at V for lunch with a group of 6 humans and 2 well-behaved dogs. Everyone loved their food- including the dogs! V surprised us with a doggy menu, which was perfect for our hungry pups. 1st off, we love Murphys. It's such a cool little town with great people and history. We often make excuses to visit. This time the excuse was a ZZ Top/Night Ranger concert at Ironstone Vineyard. But I digress. We were steered to V by our hotel. What great advice. It's situated on a small alley off Main Street. It has inside and outside seating. Both were very nice. For our lunch we chose a Watermelon Caprese salad as an appetizer. The melon and heirloom tomatoes were delicious. It's a crazy blend of flavors. So good! For her main course, my wife chose a charred romaine salad. Besides charring the Romaine (crazy, right?) avocado, applewood bacon pieces, cherry tomatoes, Bleu cheese crumbles, truffle balsamic glaze and blue cheese dressing. What an unbelievable meal! Wow, can't believe it's been over four years since I've been here. I definitely needed to up my review to four stars! It was a hot 94 degree day so I was thrilled to get a spot inside sitting at the bar. It took a while to get acknowledged and seated but it was the tail end of the lunch hour so understandable. They were featuring all kinds of blueberry cocktails so of course I had to try a blueberry mimosa. It was perfectly chilled and a nice twist from a traditional mimosa...the blueberry puree was . We were not super hungry so we shared the calamari and shrimp appetizer as well as the truffle fries. The calamari was very tasty but I really loved the shrimp. The dish also had blistered shishito peppers which I became obsessed with, so good! The truffle fries were cooked perfectly crisp and had lots of garlic. Servings were pretty generous as we couldn't even finish. Service was fantastic considering how busy it was but man, these ladies were running...taking orders, refilling waters, busing tables and hostessing. My daughter turned 16 on Monday and I had made a promise to her and her friends that we would celebrate at the V restaurant in Murphy's. Unfortunately, I later realized that the main dining room is typically closed on Mondays. I was disappointed because this wasn't just another dinner it was my daughter's Sweet 16 and V is her favorite restaurant. What happened next is exactly why this place deserves every bit of five stars and honestly, I wish I could give it more. They opened the main dining room which is closed on Mondays, for us and this occasion. The staff went completely above and beyond to make our evening special. From the moment we arrived every single person treated us with kindness warmth professionalism and genuine hospitality. They didn't make us feel like an inconvenience they made us feel welcome appreciated and celebrated. The food was phenomenal, and everything was prepared beautifully and presented very elegantly. We live in the Bay Area, and we have access to incredible restaurants, yet the V remains one of our family's favorite places anywhere. That says a lot. What impressed me most wasn't just the amazing food it was the people. In a world where great service can be hard to find the team at the V reminded me what true hospitality looks like. I have many wonderful memories in this charming town over the years, as my family, and my daughter's family have cabins up the road. V Bistro is one of my current Favorites. Epic customer service fail with my inedible Shrimp n' Grits plate. Another person at the table and I ordered this dish and neither of us could finish it. The plate was literally swimming in balsamic vinegar, which became overwhelming as we trudged through our meal. When the waitress came to pick up the plates, I asked her if she was ready for the bad news and informed her that although I wasn't going to use the word "horrible" (it honestly was), the plate was inedible. I stated the shrimp had been totally obliterated, and that the overuse of balsamic vinegar made the plate inedible. She didn't say that she was sorry and it wasn't her place too, but she did say she would inform the chef. There was no further contact from the restaurant management or the chef, our waitress simply dropped off the bill and told us to have a good day. I think you need to know what to order here so perhaps ask the waiter what is most popular and order those dishes. We had the truffle Mac and cheese and the BBQ BLT. The max and cheese was excellent- done well. The BBQ BLT was not. Thank goodness I asked for the bbq sauce on the side because it was terrible. The rest of the ingredients were good but I am a traditionalist and think this should be served on toast not a bun. I want the star to be the bacon, tomato and lettuce. This combo adding onion rings, ranch dressing, cheese, and bbq was too much. I ended up peeling off the cheese and only eating one side of the bun as the bread was just too much. Onion ring were nice but all of those extra ingredients were a distraction. The passion martini was excellent. Service was just ok- everyone was working hard so I don't know if they are just short staffed or inefficient in their processes because we had to wait for a long time to get seated (tables were open), to place an order, to get our food, to get sugar for my ice tea and to get the check. I want to clarify something very important. When someone loudly says in front of us, "I don't give an F what they think," that is not being "jovial." That is dismissive and hostile. To suggest otherwise feels like gaslighting and invalidates my experience. What makes this worse is that we did not say a word, we did not complain, and we did not engage anyone. Your waiters were fully aware of what was happening, so for you to defend it and dismiss my concern shows that you are out of touch with both your staff and your customers. I did not imagine what was said, and I don't appreciate having my concerns minimized. We stated with drinks and then ordered a late lunch. I had a salad (which was huge) and my husband had the burger. Both were good. The pricing was on the high side but we were in downtown Murphy's so it was to be expected. The food quality was alright. I liked my salad more than my husband liked his burger. I'm not sure if there is a better restaurant in Calaveras County. if you get the chance, take a seat at the bar for an amazing cocktail, and really good conversation with the staff.
