We had the duck salad, and unfortunately the duck was way too chewy and could have been much more crispy. The cream cheese basil turkey sandwich lacked flavor and was dry, but I liked the concept. To start, we ordered the Crispy Calamari and Shrimp appetizer -- everyone enjoyed it. One person in our group had raved about the duck from a previous visit, calling it the best she'd ever had. Based on that, I ordered the duck salad, and she ordered the duck entrée from the fine dining menu. Unfortunately, the duck was disappointing -- it was chewy, and the skin was inedible. She agreed it was nothing like what she'd had before. On a positive note, my salad portion was tasty, and the champagne vanilla vinaigrette was delicious. My wife had the seafood special: scallops with risotto. I tried a bite -- they were very good. Others at our table ordered the Steak Frites and the Salmon Béarnaise, and both were satisfied. If my salad had come with salmon instead of the duck, this would have easily been a four-star experience. One thing to note: they add a mandatory 20% gratuity for parties of six or more (a bit of an oxymoron -- mandatory gratuity). The server was friendly but not quite attentive enough to justify that tip in my opinion -- but we paid it nonetheless. Overall, I'd recommend trying anything except the duck. First time at Murphys and was walking at downtown on a Sunday night. We loved the overall vibe of the place and the outdoor seating looked so welcoming. It was a cold night so we were glad that they had heating available although they only had three working heaters at that time. Wanted something light so an appetizer, burger, and drink was more than enough for me and my husband. Service was friendly but I guess they were a bit busy. Food arrived on time but we had to go inside to pay since they were taking a bit of time to go back in the outside dining area. Food was good, salmon rillettes was creamy and tasty, our burger was cooked perfectly as we liked it. The drink was nice and unique. Nice place, looks like a good breakfast place, too. read more

Epic customer service fail with my inedible Shrimp n' Grits plate. Another person at the table and I ordered this dish and neither of us could finish it. The plate was literally swimming in balsamic vinegar, which became overwhelming as we trudged through our meal. When the waitress came to pick up the plates, I asked her if she was ready for the bad news and informed her that although I wasn't going to use the word "horrible" (it honestly was), the plate was inedible. I stated the shrimp had been totally obliterated, and that the overuse of balsamic vinegar made the plate inedible. She didn't say that she was sorry and it wasn't her place too, but she did say she would inform the chef. There was no further contact from the restaurant management or the chef, our waitress simply dropped off the bill and told us to have a good day. The ambience is great. Waiter Arron was fantastic! Loved his easy going and friendly manner, which always make dining a great pleasure. Food was excellent for all my meat eating family. They were willing to go the extra mile and make me my vegetarian burger separately in an oven to avoid it touching beef or pork products on the grill. However, the burger is made with Parmesan cheese. If you are vegetarian because of health options , great place. Several options. Best Restaurant in a 50 mile range, hands down. You'll need a reservation to sit at the front dining area. There are two different bars as well. The food is great specially those blue cheese stuffed; smoked dates that are fantastic when paired with Pinot. 1st off, we love Murphys. It's such a cool little town with great people and history. We often make excuses to visit. This time the excuse was a ZZ Top/Night Ranger concert at Ironstone Vineyard. But I digress. We were steered to V by our hotel. What great advice. It's situated on a small alley off Main Street. It has inside and outside seating. Both were very nice. For our lunch we chose a Watermelon Caprese salad as an appetizer. The melon and heirloom tomatoes were delicious. It's a crazy blend of flavors. So good! For her main course, my wife chose a charred romaine salad. Besides charring the Romaine (crazy, right?) avocado, applewood bacon pieces, cherry tomatoes, Bleu cheese crumbles, truffle balsamic glaze and blue cheese dressing. What an unbelievable meal! I had the deep fried Brussels sprouts, with balsamic glaze. No, we aren't vegan or vegetarian. It's just it all sounded so good we had to try. And we're so glad we did! Wow, can't believe it's been over four years since I've been here. I definitely needed to up my review to four stars! It was a hot 94 degree day so I was thrilled to get a spot inside sitting at the bar. It took a while to get acknowledged and seated but it was the tail end of the lunch hour so understandable. They were featuring all kinds of blueberry cocktails so of course I had to try a blueberry mimosa. It was perfectly chilled and a nice twist from a traditional mimosa...the blueberry puree was . We were not super hungry so we shared the calamari and shrimp appetizer as well as the truffle fries. The calamari was very tasty but I really loved the shrimp. The dish also had blistered shishito peppers which I became obsessed with, so good! The truffle fries were cooked perfectly crisp and had lots of garlic. Servings were pretty generous as we couldn't even finish. Service was fantastic considering how busy it was but man, these ladies were running...taking orders, refilling waters, busing tables and hostessing. Having a busser would probably make a difference and help these hard working ladies quite a bit. Great stop overall and good food! read more

April is a big birthday month for us...we met my brother and his family in Murphys for lunch to celebrant our big days. I have many wonderful memories in this charming town over the years, as my family, and my daughter's family have cabins up the road. V Bistro is one of my current Favorites. Huge menu of artfully prepared dishes to suit every taste ....works perfectly for a group. I went for a salad, tailored to my dietary needs, and a spicy Ginger Beer. Yum. I think you need to know what to order here so perhaps ask the waiter what is most popular and order those dishes. We had the truffle Mac and cheese and the BBQ BLT. The max and cheese was excellent- done well. The BBQ BLT was not. Thank goodness I asked for the bbq sauce on the side because it was terrible. The rest of the ingredients were good but I am a traditionalist and think this should be served on toast not a bun. I want the star to be the bacon, tomato and lettuce. This combo adding onion rings, ranch dressing, cheese, and bbq was too much. I ended up peeling off the cheese and only eating one side of the bun as the bread was just too much. Onion ring were nice but all of those extra ingredients were a distraction. The passion martini was excellent. Service was just ok- everyone was working hard so I don't know if they are just short staffed or inefficient in their processes because we had to wait for a long time to get seated (tables were open), to place an order, to get our food, to get sugar for my ice tea and to get the check. Staff was friendly that is not an issue. Overall, I recommend you stick to simple dishes and you should get a good meal. Come if not in a rush. I want to clarify something very important. When someone loudly says in front of us, "I don't give an F what they think," that is not being "jovial." That is dismissive and hostile. To suggest otherwise feels like gaslighting and invalidates my experience. What makes this worse is that we did not say a word, we did not complain, and we did not engage anyone. Your waiters were fully aware of what was happening, so for you to defend it and dismiss my concern shows that you are out of touch with both your staff and your customers. I did not imagine what was said, and I don't appreciate having my concerns minimized. Based on both the incident and your response, I will not be returning to your restaurant, and I will share my experience with others. Respectfully, I am firm in this decision. read more

My daughter and I found this cute little town and decided in this restaurant to stop at. Glad we did. There was a line to get seated, but it went quickly. Our server was attentive and friendly. She had the truffle fries, which was a large portion. I had the black and blue salad, also a large portion. Both were delicious. We stated with drinks and then ordered a late lunch. I had a salad (which was huge) and my husband had the burger. Both were good. The pricing was on the high side but we were in downtown Murphy's so it was to be expected. The food quality was alright. I liked my salad more than my husband liked his burger. We've had the opportunity to come to V for the last 10+ years. I'm not sure if there is a better restaurant in Calaveras County. if you get the chance, take a seat at the bar for an amazing cocktail, and really good conversation with the staff. The burger and charred romaine salad are both incredible, as are their daily soups. If you're there for the brunch, the shrimp and grits are some of the best we've tasted. Visited recently during the 4th of July weekend and although it was very busy at lunch, we got seated quickly on the patio. Menu's had food and liquid stains. Table top was clean, but lacked utensils, which we had to request. Service was quick, friendly and attentive. Food was good, but represents a pricey and confusing mash up of American comfort and European Bistro. For example, Escargot on a lunch menu in Murphy's CA, seems like a stretch.
