We found the Wayside via Yelp and made reservations via OpenTable for 6 having no idea what to expect in early May. It's the off season here so the Inn was very quiet when we arrived except for the beautiful, rushing river behind it. Outside it's clear that the inn is being fixed up and at 198 years old, what doesn't? So we went in... Sarah is the owner/manager of the Inn for the last 18 months. She has extensive experience working for major hotel chains and it shows. The bar is stocked with national, regional and local beers and there was an adequate choice of wine and liquor. Our bartender, Mariah was knowledge, friendly and willing to create new drinks for us! An espresso stout and marshmallow vodka shot tasted like a long evening latte. She's knowledgeable of local food, hiking and other things to do in the area. The atmosphere is charming and Sarah has preserved much of the previous owner's photos of happy golf groups. The dining room is large but only about 15 tables have a view of the river and the old bridge. If you're going to come out, I would suggest asking to reserve one of them. Dinner was both delicious and entertaining. The salmon was perfectly cooked and there are ample vegetarian choices on the menu including poblano tacos made on handmade cauliflower tortillas. The Mac and cheese (which is not a burger) was very tasty as well. Bottom line: enjoy this woman-owned charmer and help the local economy too! You won't be disappointed. read more

The ambiance was great, especially outside by the river. Eating dinner listening to the water run, couldn't have asked for a better evening. Regarding the food. We (three of us) each got a drink. An old fashioned, the Penelope, and raspberry Mojito. The old fashioned was not good, tasted like straight alcohol. The raspberry mojito was really good and well balanced, but towards the end we noticed a piece of wrapper at the bottom of the glass. The Penelope was actually really good. The Brussel sprouts and the clam chowder was really good. The fish and chips was very bland. The steak and the burger were both really good. Overall it was an okay experience, not sure if we'd be back. But it's a really nice place with a nice spot to sit outside. read more

Came here to have dinner at this restaurant located in an inn. I recommend making a reservation even if they are not busy. Hostess/front desk personnel didn't seem too friendly. The dining room has a beautiful view of their backyard and stream. There was live music when we went. Food was decent and filling. read more

The room was already reasonably priced but add in the breakfast being included (which was lovely as well; nice view of the bridge & the food was good) -- probably a $15-20 value per person, & it being foliage season... very impressed. My brothers and I stayed at an air bnb up the street, saw this place and had great reviews. Stopped in for dinner and was delighted with the scenery. The staff was friendly and prompt with their service. The downfall was the food. My brothers ordered the chicken with tots, ravioli (with some kind of mushroom pattie) and I ordered the fish and chips. The brother that had the chicken found a hair, my other brother that had ordered the ravioli said the mushroom pattie tasted like it went bad and was covered in oil and my simple fish and chips was so under cooked it was oozing batter. My advice for the owner is to stick to a simpler menu or find a new chef. You have such a beautiful location and a great staff it was a shame the food didn't match. read more

Stayed here over school break. The room was very clean and warm. The view of the river from our balcony was absolutely amazing. We didn't even realize the room came with feee breakfast. The breakfast was delicious and made fresh for you (not your run of the mill breakfast buffet). Would have given it 5 stars but the internet kept going in and out, the furniture could use some updating, and the room needs better privacy curtains on the back door. As a local I cannot speak to the accommodations. If, however, they are anything like the dining experience it it excellent. Wayside has become our goto local place for almost everything. Sarah has done a wonderful job revamping the establishment and has brought in new talent in the kitchen. Josh is amazing. We've had dinner in both the dining room and bar areas as well as Sunday brunch many times at this point. The specials are amazing. The NY strip the other night came out a perfect rare and were matched well with the asparagus. The burger is always excellent and if taco mac and cheese is on the menu, it is a must have! I am so mad at myself for forgetting to write a review on this quaint and beautiful Inn. My husband and I stayed for New Years after skiing down the road during the day. We were greeted by the owner who was extremely friendly, we celebrated New Years in the bar downstairs with Champagne and Music with a good sized group, and even were served a homecooked breakfast next to the river in the am. I have told everyone about this hidden gem and how great our stay was. The price is extremely reasonable, the staff is great, it's clean, and right down the road from some incredible places, mountains, and sites. Highly recommended. We are looking forward to visiting in a couple of weeks to catch the end of foliage season. read more

We were delighted with our Easter Brunch at the Wayside Inn. We had never visited, and tried it on a whim. WOW! I mean, *WOW!* First of all, my mouth is watering as I type thinking about their cinnamon roll pancakes and the California Eggs Benedict. Everybody in our family had something different and everybody was delighted. My mimosa and my husband's bloody Mary were also delicious. Second of all, they had a surprise Easter Egg hunt awaiting us! What sweet attention to detail. Third of all, the view from the dining room is both peaceful and beautiful, right on the river. The new owner is very nice she introduced her self while seating us . My filet was a good size and cooked perfectly my daughters chicken parmesan was fantastic as was my husbands pulled pork sandwich. The menu has something for everyone and is very reasonable priced . So I found this Inn on Bedandbreakfast.com. I have to tell you this is a motel not a BnB. It has also not been updated in a long long time. That said they owner is really friendly and accommodating. I just didn't want someone to book this place thinking it's a traditional BnB like I did. It shouldn't be on that site. read more

A really nice restaurant in the middle of (sort of) nowhere? A really good restaurant attached to a small roadside motel? Well, yes, and we were as delighted as surprised to discover it, thanks to a recommendation from our nearby inn-keeper. Actually when we asked about mid-week dinner choices in this area, it came down to Bretton Woods (nice but expensive) and Wayside. We're awfully glad we opted for the latter. There's a small but very diverse menu, and everything we ordered we liked (thank you executive chef Joshua Beemer). The pimento dip ($7) was tasty with a teeny bit of zip to it, the chicken pot pie soup was original and sensational ($5) to the palate, the fish 'n chips ($13) crunchy good, the beef fillet with mashed potatoes and asparagus (22) so flavorful. Add in special cranberry margaritas and we were a very happy group. The restaurant has views of a fast-flowing creek, a pleasant, old-fashioned atmosphere and a friendly, young wait staff. All good stuff. Please consider this a recommendation. read more

This is placed in an awesome location along the river. The new owner Sarah is outstanding and very accommodating. Was an easy relaxing stay. While the rooms are dated, they are very clean. I am sure Sarah will continue to make improvements to further escalate this hotel to outstanding! I loved sitting on my balcony overlooking the river. We stayed here at the end of a long trip for 3 nights and had a terrific time. It is an older building, but well taken care of, has a river behind and the breakfast and dinner were both EXCELLENT. Looking at other reviews, I would just remind everyone to NOT judge the book by the cover. I was really impressed by each of the staff, our waitress was lovely and the food was very, very good. Not just compared to what is around - but very good for any vacation spot. They are continuing renovations but, though old in appearance, it is clearly well-loved and I think was a gem of a find. Lovely old White Mountains inn being modernized and rejuvenated with care to maintain its authenticity. In the main building the rooms are comfortable and cozy, each decorated individually. An overnight stay comes with a full breakfast. The restaurant has amazing food carefully prepared and delicious! There is a nice variety on the menu with a couple specials offered each night. We stayed there earlier this month and it was a wonderful weekend. The owner is Sarah, a young woman with plenty of hospitality experience who has brought this inn back to life. Our room was terrific with a view (and sound) of the river. The grounds are beautiful. Great location to experience New Hampshire with hiking and golf nearby. The restaurant was a real surprise - absolutely outstanding. A very high end meal. This chef would be a hit in any major city. Hats off to Sarah for getting it right! We'll be back. read more

The facility is owner-operated. It's on the banks of the Amonusuc River. We stayed in the Annex, with a balcony overlooking the River. Clean, comfortable room with a mini fridge couch and table. Just had the best family dinner here! We're a tough crowd--my dad is vegan, my kids are a handful (and one is a very picky eater), and both my husband and myself are restaurant industry veterans. Everyone left very happy! We all loved our food (veggie burger, meat burger, salmon, Mac and cheese, chicken tenders) and I was blown away by the lamb. It was a really generous portion (so uncommon with lamb!) and falling-off-the-bone tender. The staff were all extremely kind and beyond understanding with our boisterous, travel-hyped kids. The owner, Sarah, has done a really amazing job with the whole inn. We're only in town for a few days but will definitely be back! read more

One medallion was undercooked, the other was just "off"... We didn't actually complain... The waitress just was concerned... We didn't ask for the dish to be credited or replaced, but we also didn't ask the owner/chef to come out and berate us. Poor form! The Wayside Inn was recently sold to new ownership, and we went there for dinner last night. The menu is fantastic, reasonably priced, and Chef Josh rocks with his culinary skills. The new owner, Sarah Levy, is a bright new star in Bethlehem, and we are so thankful she is at the helm of this iconic location. Cannot speak for the rooms, only passed through and had dinner. This place was musty and dated and ugly! The food was OK, we had burgers which were cooked right and tasted great. Our drinks were a different story... Manhattan with no whiskey? No thanks! Tasted like cherries and Vermouth. They need a new bartender and some more servers! Nobody who worked there seemed happy to be there. The location is cute with a river view...and some updating to the restaurant (NEW CARPET) would really help. May try this place again next year and will update review. read more

This business is running a classic bait-and-switch scam, whereby it lures customers with photos of a quaint New England inn, only to provide them with horrible accommodations in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BUILDING upon arrival. To clarify, the inn that is featured in the photos (or at least the exterior facade of the inn) does exist. However, upon arrival, we were given a room in "The Annex," which is a completely separate building to the left of the inn. While climbing up the steps to our third-floor room, we noticed enormous spiderwebs that spanned several doorways, which was not a good sign. Immediately upon opening the door to the room, we were overwhelmed by a horrible, musty smell that likely came from the maroon carpet that looked as though it was installed in the 1970s. We had to open the door to the balcony (on a warm August day) in an attempt to mitigate the smell. There was an extremely thick layer of dust over all of the furniture, including the bed frame, which suggested that the room had not been dusted in months. The comforters on the beds were so yellow and dingy that we started checking for bed bugs before we put any of our belongings on the beds. We ended up putting all of our belongings on top of a table and wearing shoes at all times when we were in the room because we did not want anything to touch the floor. We were supposed to eat dinner in the Inn's dining room, but we were so repulsed by the state of our room that we cancelled our reservation. The very thought of eating there made us nauseous. If we could have found a room anywhere else, we would have left, but unfortunately all of the surrounding hotels were booked. DO NOT STAY HERE. Your money will be much better spent at one of the charming bed and breakfasts in Bethlehem, Whitefield, or North Conway. read more
