This happened the other day. My friend just turned 21 and has a vertical driver's license from Louisiana. We go and they are scanning IDs with someone's personal phone. My ID is fine since I just got a new one from Utah. The lady at the front couldn't understand hers? So they bring us in and have someone else check it. Then they tell us to leave. I asked if there was any reason and they said 'because we said so'. So we go back to my friends that were trying to get some tacos at the food truck in front of their place and the new bouncer told us to "Beat it." We are all 21 or older and were not causing a scene. We are never coming back to Johnnies and I will not recommend this bar to anyone. Couldn't even be polite or give a reason when I asked him what we did wrong, if anything. If you have a Utah ID, you're fine. If not, you're not welcome here. read more

This place deserves way more than just a three star rating! Came into town for a work trip and decided to get some drinks with my new friends as I quickly found out most places closed early or stopped serving booze. I hoped on yelp and quickly found this place an uber ride and boom we were there. I saw the doorman he checked our ids and we had zero issues and inside we went. I went straight to the bar and was greeted by both bartenders who were both awesome. You guys even had my favorite rum Kraken on hand so props to you! We got some drinks and chatted in the room for a bit before heading into the main pool/concert area. I noticed there was a projector with a nintendo switch hooked up and had mario and smash brothers. Holy shit that's awesome!!! Played a few rounds and then started looking around at other patrons of the night. Noticed there was two men playing pool aggressively and before I knew it one of them got a sweet mortal kombat upper cut to the face after trying to grab on his girlfriend. I locked eyes with sub zero just gave him a little smile and drank some more rum n coke. I felt right at home like it was a one of my favorite dive bars back home in AZ. I'd heard good things about this place, but I wouldn't know first hand, and not for a lack of trying. I attempted to visit around 11:30 on December 9th. The dude at the door had an attitude and seemed all too pleased to reject my U.S. Government military ID. I reminded him and the nearby security officer that a military ID is a valid means of identification and that a driver license is not required to verify one's age. They clearly didn't care. It would seem Johnny's on Second doesn't serve veterans. read more

One star and I didn't even get inside. The security took my REAL ID!!!! I waited in line with friends ages 22-25 to get out IDs checked to head inside. I had the bouncer my ID and he takes a second longer to look at it. Which is not uncommon in Utah considering it is a vertical Nevada license that I've had since I turned 16 and doesn't not expire till next year. The bouncer then tucks my ID in his pocket and proceeds to treat me like a criminal. Telling me my REAL ID is fake I need to call dispatch! I'm of course starting to cry and panic, I have recently moved here and am changing my license and my registration over. How could my real ID be questioned? It took everyone in my group coming back out to tell him it's my real ID for him to even think about giving it back. Once he did there was not even an apology. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!! read more

This place was a bar within walking distance of my hotel that offered karaoke and beer. I was sold. I met a couple of friends there for some drinks and entertainment. Drinks were cheap and beer was cold. We stood at a bar top infront of the stage. We had a front row seat to the singers it was great. I would hang out here if I lived in this town for sure. The diviest of dive bars, Johnny's is famous for one thing, and one thing alone. Dirt cheap drinks. If you're looking for swankier ambiance then Bar-X is a few doors down, but be prepared to pay 5x as much per cocktail. The crowd was a mishmash of young and old people, tattooed freaks and guys in suits just off work. There was poker going on and a pool table that was popular. There was plenty of seating and loud music playing from what I believe was a jukebox. I felt comfortable walking in off the street and kicking back with some friends. 3.5 stars. It's dirty, divey and it smells like my old high school gym locker room. The upside is the staff kicks major butt, the drinks are cheap and the people are cool. There are a lot of pool tables, live music/DJ's and some basic food choices for eats. Or you can have food delivered or bring some in. I used to go here quite often just for cheap beers, but that has come to an end as of the last weekend. It is a pretty trashy bar to begin with, and things were only offset by how cheap their drinks were. Last weekend I ordered a new beer on the poster board by reading exactly what it said (Belgian white with guava from upslope brewery) and this trashy bartender gave me a stein glass of bluemoon instead. Knowing it was a wrong drink, I asked him if the drink I got was Belgian white with guava. He responded, "I don't know. I think so?" in a slightly annoyed tone and just walked away. Well, whatever, it was a busy weekend night so I decided to ignore it. 20 minutes later I went back to order my second beer and the same bartender came at me. I told him, "I think you gave me bluemoon last time. Can I... " "So?" He cuts me midway and stares at me. I still proceeded to ask him, "Can I get that (pointing at the poster) Belgian white with guava this time?" And this idiot flips out. "Dude you fucking piss me off. I am not taking your order" and just walks away again. Little annoyed by then, I said "What the fuck did I do wrong?" and simply decided to leave the bar. I believe his action was intentional. They have less than 10 beers on tap and even a chimpanzee would memorize all 10 by their names. Don't go to this garbage hole unless you wanna mingle with sticky scumbags. read more

Now that Beer Bar is up, just come here for the pool tables. That should be Johnny's slogan, "Beer Bar's Pool Tables" Liquor up next door. Music is too loud to talk here anyway. Bartenders are kind of dicks unless you're 20.5 and flash the boobies for attention (annoying first time drinkers down from UofU are plentiful. Police you want easy targets? Check this place out). What happened to change the review: Girl cut in in line and ordered birthday shots for her friends. (Line was all the way to the back) Bartender tolerated it, filled her huge order. 2 of her friends then decided to order something else too Both got orders in, credit card and all before the 4 of us in line who were verbally letting our dissatisfaction known. I'm pretty intolerant of Bartenders that give attention to some "Instagram chick" who's celebrating getting her fake ID instead the regular crowd who have be coming here for for nearly a decade (check the date on my previous review to see how long I've been here). YOU WATCHED HER CUT IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY! ENFORCE "BAR LAW" AND SHUT HER DOWN! Plus the shuffleboard table is long gone. This place is done. I've been to this bar many times. The prices are great and the atmosphere is fun. The bouncers are another story. I have presented my ca id to the bouncer on multiple ocassiins and they proceeded to scrape their fingers across it and fold it in half to the point of it almost breaking. If I had a fake that was vertical and a picture that looked like I was 15 I would be the biggest idiot in town. Within a two week period I have been harassed for nothing by the same bouncer. I paid for all of my drinks and was playing pool when the same bar bouncer hit my phone out of my hand and when I confronted him about it he tried to forcibly remove me from the bar. After I left the bar, the same bouncer informed my friends that I was not welcome back at the bar because I was harassing girls waiting to enter the bar. That did not occur. Johnny's on Second is your quintessential dive bar. You can get cheap booze and somewhat delightful conversation from the regulars, but I usually bring my own friends. It is centrally located to downtown Salt Lake City and near many other bars in case it is not your style. The full bar is fairly cheap and they even serve some food. They have the $4 shot and beer that you can upgrade the pint to a stein for another $1. Go for it and get the upgrade. The bathrooms are to be avoided and the felt is often missing on the pool tables, but there is something charming about this bar. I will often start here on a night out just to get it out of the way. They have street parking and outdoor seating. So get out of work early and swing by Johnny's to get the $4 beer and a shot before dinner with the significant other or the work party. read more

The people you meet are far more interesting and entertaining than at clubs where you're just grinding on people or at hipster bars (such as the one next door to Johnny's) where there is a practiced air of cool aloofness. We made so many new best friends. They were random and weird, and I hope to God I didn't give out my phone number or address in a fit of drunken recklessness, but what a night. I have one beer can in my backpack from who the hell knows when. I show up at jhonnys and the bouncer firmly places his hand on my friends chest then asks me to open and clear my backpack. He finds the beer can which is clearly much better and more expensive than any beer served at Jhonnys. Johnny's has five pool tables, shuffleboard, free wifi, live music, and busy patio. This place also has a Dj playing on friday nights. Johnny's is also home of the $4 buck for a shot and a beer combo. Grab one of those and you can be set for the rest of the night. Johnny's serves tallboys for $3 bucks (Budweiser, Bud-light and coors light) and wells go for $3.25 here. If are downtown for business or pleasure, I recommend coming here for a beer. Pay no attention to the pool sharks, smelly bathrooms or older regulars. Remember one thing, you come here for the cheap booze and chill atmosphere. read more

Will you find hand crafted cocktails or a huge selection of awesome beers like it's neighbors? Not even close, but you can get a shot and a bud light for $4 if that's what you're into. Johnny's is weird. It used to be one of those Pool Hall Junkies franchises that catered, unsurprisingly, to the billiards crowd. Now there's only two tables left, and with those tables have stayed some of the less desirable patrons from the old days. I'm not sure exactly what it is about the crowd at Johnny's that puts me off, but every time I walk through the door, I feel like I'm instantly being sized up by most of the crowd. I'm always worried about getting into a fight for no reason, and I haven't been in a fistfight since before I could drive. Drinks are moderately priced, and weeknights seating is usually available. But the staff all have relatively short tempers and if things start filling up, expect to wait at least 15 minutes in line for your libations. If you have to end up here, it won't be the worst night of your life. But with so many similar bars nearby, I have a hard time suggesting to anyone that they swing through Johnny's on Second of their own volition. read more

I went to Johnny's this past week for their free poker night. The place reminds me of one of my favorite bars back in Scottsdale so the connection was immediate. The place is split into two ajoining rooms. The front room has pool tables and several TV screens, including a large projection screen. The back room includes several booths and the bar. They have modestly priced drinks and some pizza that is apparently pretty delish. Though it's a smokey bar and a total dive, it's a great place. I'll definitely be going back to Johnny's. read more

Weird/sad experience. There was definitely sexism going on. The men would get their drinks first even though I was in line first. I paid to use the jukebox and it kept getting turned off so I didn't get to hear my music. Get a better system or ordering , and asked your bartenders to be kind. read more

There are no happy hours in Salt Lake, or in Utah for that matter...but this is the closest thing to it. $4 shot and a beer all the time: great deal since the beer choices include Shock Top. The shot is a thin "whiskey"- only choice. But it draws the true lovers of drinks so we were surrounded by good happy vibes.
