I guess all these reviews hyped it up for me. Just wasn't impressed. Almost 10 minutes for the waitress to come by and get our drink order, then blamed the hostess for not telling her, but this is a 1 room restaurant so it's not like she couldn't see her table was sat. Then the cost for food came out to $10 per person with 2 adults and 2 kids, and the portions were good. Like I said, overall I wasn't impressed, but I can't really criticize food. We don't plan on returning because we can think of a couple other restaurants that we would rather spend our money at. read more

A true West Side classic. Absolutely delicious breakfast, skillets, lunch, and Polish plates. Often busy on the weekends, expect a 10 to 15 minute wait. Staff is extremely friendly and aims to make their guests experience the best possible. Restaurant is cozy and casual feeling. One star is way to much for this place. Our food was brought out by the waitress, my grandmothers toast was not brought out with her breakfast. We waited another 5 minutes for her toast after asking the waitress and manager. When the toast was finally brought out it was smushed and barley toasted. My mother ordered a burger, she finished putting all of the fixings on it and flipped it over to start eating when she noticed her bun was full of MOLD. The manager was polite and took care of the issues immediately. The waitress acted like it was an inconvenience to bring new toast. To TOP it all off the waitresses were openly talking about us loud enough for us to hear across the room. Absolutely awful. I will never come back. read more

This is a restaurant we frequent a lot and I guess you could say we were loyal customers. This morning we arrived at 9:30 am to have breakfast. We were hungry and I have to say the food was good. 50 minutes later as my hubby was finishing his last cup of coffee we were rudely asked to leave as people were waiting. Now I happen to think asking someone to leave in less than an hour is a but much on a Sunday when you're having breakfast. So, needless to say we will be going elsewhere. We went in for brunch on a Saturday and had a great experience! There was about a 20min wait, but we were able to order coffee while we waited which was awesome. The food was terrific and well priced and the service was great. Our waitress was very friendly, coffee and water were always refilled quickly, and the hostess (owner?) check on us to make sure everything was perfect. I would definitely go again! read more

When you mashup Cuban and Polish food you get the Westsider Cafe. A pleasant surprise in the land of chain restaurant, this breakfast-brunch place has a terrific Cubano sandwich made with tender pork tenderloin, ham and pickles on toasted bread. It is served with delicious black beans and rice on the side. The servers are also pretty amazing. In August we toured Michigan for ten days, from Kalamazoo to Marquette in the UP, and the best food we found on the road the whole time was at The Westsider Café in Grand Rapids. They actually make most of their menu items and components from scratch in house, and everything we had was DE-LISH-OUS! I wish The Westsider would consider opening an Oakland, California branch of their fine, fine damn restaurant so I could eat there at least once a week. This isn't the place to have a relaxing breakfast or lunch with a friend and have a decent conversion. When I paid the bill, I mentioned to the waitress that I felt pressured by the manager to leave as quickly as possible. I was told, "Well, yeah we try to have a high turnover." This is ok for your average breakfast. Food was hot and tasted good but if you're looking for an out of the box breakfast joint this isn't it. A kids breakfast is 4 dollars and doesn't include a drink (add another 1.50 for that) I had the #1 skillet and it is supposed to come with sausage gravy on top and while it was there, it was only lightly poured down the center. My husband had a burrito and it seemed to satisfy and was stuffed to the brim. Just average but that doesn't make it bad, just not what I was expecting. read more

It's nice to have it on the westside but the patrons are usually pretty obnoxious. The polish food is not exactly authentic but if you're looking for pancakes or some other breakfast food I'd go. I took my dad out to breakfast on a recent Friday morning, and was surprised to find the place PACKED at 8:30am. Our waitress was friendly, and the menu is pretty extensive if you like meat. There wasn't much for a vegan, but I adapted one of the skillets into potatoes with veggies. It wasn't nearly as good as the Veggie Hash at Real Food Cafe, but it was fine. My dad had something with potatoes, eggs, meat, and a Belgian Waffle. That waffle looked darn delish, I must say. The potatoes had a lot of oil on them, but he said everything was yummy. It wasn't cheap - I paid $11 for some vegetables and toast -- but I'd go back. read more

This place is still such a Trainwreck. 20 minutes waiting for food. No coffee refresher...no attention even if you stared at the waitresses. Food came out with ten minute gaps. So my first time exploring Grand Rapids to attend a state track meet landed my family and I in this small joint. We all managed to fit in a matter of time and ordered right away. Some of us got breakfast and some got lunch. I decided to get the turkey reuben and it was fantastic! Was unable to finish it since it was quite big. My mom got the classic reuben with no saurkraut but she was not as much pleased with it because the corned beef was pretty fatty so she only ate one half of it. My youngest brother got the peirogi platter and he was in heaven... Definitely not your store bought peirogi. My dad decided to get a light golabki dish and this was not a "lighter" version because this cabbage role was not only delicious but HUGE. My sister enjoyed her classic club sandwich and onion rings but lastly if you are wanting a breakfast that can feed a family of 4 you should get the #7 called... The Hungriest. Yes it's called that because they also serve a meal called hungry and hungrier. My other brother got this and he was some what pleased with it. Only things he was dissappointed in was the fatty ham and the runny eggs. He loved the waffle and sausage so it was all good. One last thing it you must be patient when coming here because a small kitchen can only serve so many at a time so service was kinda slow. I would come back! read more

OK, first it depends what you're looking for. It's more of a diner than a foodie place. Wait times are short because they are so efficient at moving tables. Service was fast and kitchen is fast (but kept flinging plates of toast off the warming shelf, onto the floor - twice while we were there). Zero ambiance - crowded, noisy, and extremely drafty. Food was tasty but not especially attractively plated. The Cuban skillet was swimming in a pool of liquid, and the sauerkraut in the Polish skillet was crazy sweet! Caught my eye when I read polish plates . Always down to try polish food . I got the pierogi plate and my husband got the kielbasa plate . Great portions a lot of food and for a great price. Sauerkraut was just a bit too much vinegar in it not to my liking but the kapusta was delicious pierogies were good but not as amazing as the authentic grandmas pierogies red bliss potatoes delicious.
