I love the Wheelhouse! I've tried some of their house sandwiches and I tried the "build your own grilled cheese" option last night... Gruyere, caramelized onions and bacon on white bread. MELTY HEAVEN. The tots are surprisingly good, super crispy and herby - even better dipped in some garlic aioli. Also, THE MILKSHAKES. I never write Yelp reviews, but I felt compelled to with this joint. Two weeks ago, I ordered their "specialty," the mac and cheese. What I received was boxed shells and cheese, except somehow blander. I'm not exaggerating or trying to be cute, that's literally what I received. I was disgusted, and moreover, felt like I had been scammed out of $15. I didn't go in with high expectations, but I at least expected something competent, given the other reviews and write-ups I've read about this place. I don't know if they've had a drastic changeover in the last month or so, but trust the more recent negative reviews you read here and on Seamless. Ordered 2 morning wood sandwiches, fried brussels sprouts, tater tots, and the house dessert for delivery. Delivery time was quick (took 46 minutes, while their delivery estimate is 45-60 minutes to my place). One sandwich was missing, but I got a quick refund from Eat24 after chatting with them, and shared the one tiny sandwich with my wife. Not sure what Jennifer S from a 2/4/15 review ordered, but the sandwich we got was pretty much kid sized and I had to open it up to make sure there was any cheese in it, since I could not see any from the side. Pretty expensive for such a tiny sandwich, and I could barely taste any cheese. I was expecting there to be a decent amount of cheese since this place specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches. Cool little spot with a light bar, where beer and light wines are served. It's small but it's really organized and well kept, the servers are knowledgable and friendly of menu items and daily specials. I ordered a garden salad with grilled chicken. Just tried this place out today. Even though I had a tooth surgery yesterday, I was really craving for Mac & Cheese. This place is close by to our house, so we thought we would give it a try. And wow! Love the mac & cheese (coming from someone who is very very particular with their mac & cheese). They have great spinach chicken salad. I can't wait to recover from this tooth pain, to try their grill cheese sandwiches! I think we met the owner today, and he was really nice and friendly. Apparently they do movei nights, open mic nights, trivia nights every week. Sounds like fun! read more

When you can't figure out what you want to eat, Wheelhouse is a solid option for a classic grilled cheese & tomato soup. They have a bunch of custom grilled cheeses, or you can build your own (which is what I usually opt for). It's pretty hard to mess up grilled cheese, but I've never been disappointed with any of the sandwiches I've had here. They also serve drinks which makes for a casual, laid back environment. Tater tots are good. The only thing I wasn't wow-ed by was the mac & cheese -- would definitely skip it, as it was pretty bland and didn't add much to the meal. read more

It's been a while since I last wrote a review, but this place is worth the mention! My boyfriend and I went there for the first time for Trivia Night during the summer and we were impressed by how busy it was for a "grilled cheese" restaurant. We ordered the meatball marinara, Cubano, and tater tots coming in at around $35. Our order took about 25mins, but considering the small kitchen staff of two, packed house and deliveries, I'd say they do their best to accommodate everyone in such a busy environment. Our server (who doubled as the bartender) was very attentive to us and all the guests. We completely respect and appreciate that. The food was deliciously cooked! Definitely more than a grilled cheese sandwich shop. We were told by our server that they make their own meatballs and pork which is marinated and cooked for 6hrs- that's dedication and to my knowledge, no other restaurant in the neighborhood has come close to that! The sandwiches were just so thin, bare and lacking in meat. I'm happy to pay a premium for excellent food, but these two sandwiches and some basic tots were nearly $50, and left us both incredibly unsatisfied. Massive disappointment. read more

First off, I really, really wanted to give this place a better score. I don't often give negative reviews of restaurants. But, honestly the food was a little lacking. I started off with the cheese plate. I was awfully surprised when the cheese I had was warm and tasted like the kind of cheese you buy at the supermarket. The olives also tasted a bit suspect for my taste. Next came the Cajun Shrimp Po'Boy, and from what I saw on the menu, I was expecting a bar/restaurant that serves sandwiches as their main sell to be on it. The shrimp was absolutely awful. It tasted dry and to be honest I think the shells were on the shrimp still. The bread was a little too toasted. I left more than half of it in the plate. Let me say that my 4 star review is actually a 4.5 star review. I have to be clear about that. Just to start out, I'll let you know the only reasons that this place doesn't get the full 5 stars. One of the reasons is a tiny knock on their salad: there is not enough dressing, however that might be a good thing because it is a liiiiittle too vinegary. The next reason: it's so so so heavy. Honestly that last part isn't really a bad thing, it just happened to be a little much for me last night. Onto the GREAT stuff: The staff is wonderful. We had a super friendly waitress named Erin, attentive and very sweet. The beer is also awesome, very good pairings for all dat cheese. Onto the MAIN attraction... The Sandwich. Good lord, those sandwiches were big, gooey and almost too tasty. I definitely ate way faster than I normally do. My buddy and I had the Jerky Boy - sometimes it's hard to get the right kind of jerk rub on a sandwich. This. Was. Not. One. Of. Those. Times. The jerk chicken is delicious and paired with that pineapple and jalapeño chutney... Lordy! Oh and I'm almost forgetting the main attraction THAT CHEESE. Gruyere was the very best choice, it wasn't overpowering like a cheddar would have been... it was beautiful. A great, great sandwich. My boyfriend had the Brewben - so much meat! The corned beef was cooked so nicely. Now, I'm not a big fan of horseradish, but he is and he loved it. He actually ate it faster than I did. It was impressive. I live around the corner from Wheelhouse and nothing makes me happier than fantastic grilled cheese whenever I want. They are the ideal neighborhood spot. However, I probably would not have taken time to write a review if it hadn't been for the issues they have had with Yelp. I'm sure this review will get filtered out but I'd like to help replace any real 5 star reviews they lost. I have worked in the industry and this is not the first nor sadly the last restaurant I have heard of that have had mysterious issues after telling Yelp they couldn't afford to advertise with them. Restaurants can't ignore or leave Yelp when they're young because so many of us (and yes, I use it even though I think the system is rigged, I'm a hypocrite) use it as a directory these days. read more

Bomb ass food!!! Enough said on that.. But the service was horrible... The waitresses were not tolerable at all. Plus, we had ordered the bottomless mimosas.. And only got 3 for $17, waited for almost 20 mins for the 3rd cup. Though for 2 it would have been only $14.. Felt like they were trying to get over on us. But when we had asked if they were going to refill our bottomless. They stated its been an hour, though we waited like I said for about 20 mins before saying anything. Horrible service.. I've had quite a few items off the menu... -Morning Wood - Bacon, egg, cheddar on crusty wholewheat bread. DELICIOUS!! -Braised Short-Rib - caramelized onions, gruyere, and blackberry jam combo is AMAZING!! -Bacon-Cheddar Burger Melt - This sandwich was way too salty and greasy for me. -Pepperoni Pizza Melt - It tastes just like pizza. My roommate who loves pizza swears by it. -Outcast - The cod is A+. If you want a wildcard choice...this is it!! LOVE this sandwich! -Tomato Soup - Thick, hearty, and great to dip your grilled cheese sandwich in!! -Tater Tots - Exactly what you'd expect tater tots to taste like. -Crispy Fried Brussel Sprouts - GET THESE!!! You won't regret it! -Bananas Foster Milkshake - I mean, how could you go wrong? This place is ALMOST 5 stars, but it lost a star because they're sandwich size isn't always consistent, and because one time I received a sandwich that wasn't fully cooked; meaning the cheese wasn't melted and the bread wasn't toasted, and I had a similar experience once with the brussel sprouts; not crispy. I would have sent them back, but they were both on occasions when I got delivery. For such a good restaurant I'd hope that they start taking more concern over what leaves their kitchen. I really wanted to love this place but after my most recent order, I don't know how to feel. My first order I got the regular creamy mac and cheese and added garlic sautéed kale on top. The Mac and cheese was HUGE, heavy, creamy, salty carb and fat loaded perfection. The kale was perfect as well, wonderfully salty and garlicky. Some crunchy bits here and there to add to the texture. I was in heaven and totally wowed because that 1 order of mac was enough to make 3 filling servings for me. Along with that order I got the outcast sandwich. I didn't realize it would be a glorified grilled cheese (was called a "gourmet sandwich", listed seperately from the grilled cheeses) with fish, cheese and a couple pickles. It definitely wasn't worth the $15 for its size, not even as far as flavour goes. I was willing to overlook this not only because of how great the mac was but because something like a sandwich is of course likely to lose its charm sitting around during a delivery, despite the disappointing size. Cut to a recent Uber Eats order of just the mac and cheese. This time I added the balsamic mushrooms as well as the kale from last time. The kale and mushrooms are incredible but the mac.....oh no. Almost entirely flavourless but the added cheese on top saves it when I get a bite that includes a decent amount of it. It is creamy, cooked well, but tastes like creamy nothing. No salt whatsoever. I don't know what happened this time but I'm pretty disappointed. Glad the toppings are at least good. The mac is definitely worth trying but I'd say maybe steer clear from the plain or take the chance and be prepared to add a lot of salt. The more exciting macs seem like great options and I doubt they won't be delicious. I'm hoping that was just an off day because if the mac is always like it was my first time, I will be a steady customer just for that. read more

I ate here on Saturday afternoon. It is now Monday morning, and I'm still thinking about their roast beef melt sandwich, just not in a good way. Why? Because it burnt the everloving SH*T out of my mouth. It may have been the cut of beef used, or that it was sliced too thick, or not tenderized or slow-cooked long enough to make it easier to chew. Whatever the reason, this is one of those sandwiches where the first bite pulls out the entire inner contents of the sandwich with it, because your teeth can't properly tear through the meat. In my case, it left me with a burn mark the size of a quarter on the roof of my mouth, as I came into prolonged contact with hot cheese while awkwardly using a fork to wrestle the first bite free from the rest of the sandwich. I didn't notice the burn immediately, or I would have aborted the attempt while I still had healthy cheek cells (for lack of a better term). I spent the rest of the weekend wondering if eating an entire box of Captain Crunch cereal (without milk) would have even compared to the injury I sustained. Then I wondered when (if ever) the kitchen staff last tried to eat this sandwich. Tasting what you make is a great way to make it better, if not by improving the taste, by at least improving how it can be consumed more easily. Score the meat? Slice it thinner? Cook it longer? I'll leave that to the staff to decide. Besides this 'long-lasting' experience, I thought the place was really nice. But if you're considering the roast beef melt, either reconsider your options or ask for a knife to go with it. read more

Great staff: As soon as you enter the door, you're welcomed in. It might feel a bit insincere, but at least you're acknowledged when they're busy. So big points for trying! Location: Bushwick is changing rapidly and as a local native for over 23 years, it's great to see an awesome sandwich parlor on the previously mostly deserted Wilson Ave.. Food: The food was well prepared, and came promptly. My first time coming in, I ordered the Cubano "lunch special" and I'm sure, the portion has to do more with the "special" than anything else. But if it doesn't, I think the sandwiches are rather small. Furthermore, the prices on the menu for most sandwiches were pretty steep for Bushwick-Especially when compared to local deli's like Marinellos Gourmet (which IMO, is one of the best sandwich places nearby) . Prices for sandwiches at The Wheelhouse, range around $10-20 after taxes, but the quality is tasteful enough. I'll have to come back and try their other sandwiches. Their soups however, are amazing! I can see myself coming here often, just for the soup. Only thing I'd say, is to be careful if you're allergic to some ingredients. When I asked what the Soup of the Day was, the staff member didn't tell me what was in it. I had the chicken noodle soup and loved it!. But I was surprised by the cheese-still a nice touch. Prices: Again, this place is great, but the prices are a bit steep. Seeing as how I've came in, with a mentality of a native, I was surprised by the prices. Usually everything costs less, or at least it used to here in Bushwick (Still getting adjusted). I came in here looking for a low-budget meal and didn't realize what the card-minimum was. I came alone, so I was expecting to pay just for the one meal and leave. But w/ a $15 minimum, I ended up paying for 2 meals for myself. I'm actually more than a bit salty that I've lived in Bushwick for years and never eaten at The Wheelhouse, but I certainly plan on making up for lost time!!! I was looking for a bottomless brunch option and The Wheelhouse came up in a yelp search. I poked around on their website to confirm it, and while I didn't actually see anything about a bottomless brunch posted, I DID see a short-rib grilled cheese with blackberry jam and that immediately took precedence over everything else in my life. You can imagine my joy when we walked in from the pouring rain on Sunday to be greeted by cheerful smiles and a menu offering $15 for all you can drink mimosas! The best drink special AND the best grilled cheese at one place?! Be still my heart! We were curious to see how the mac and cheese held up against our current neighborhood favorite, and while it didn't beat our tried and true, it was still a DAMN GOOD runner up!! I had the short rib (obviously) which was amazing although next time I will get it on normal bread. The chiabatta bread was so thick! I mean, I wouldn't kick it out of bed or anything, but no harm in shaving off a couple calories that can be better spent on mimosas. One of my friends had the pepperoni pizza one, which I didn't try but looked delicious. I actually think the winner was our third order though... the classic grilled cheese with pulled pork added on. Ordered a Lavarone 1927, Creamy Mac and Cheese and New York Cheesecake. Food came pretty quickly (though I am only 10 mins away). Sandwich was pretty good with its buttery, crunchy bread and crisp salad. Mac and cheese was severely underwhelming. Lacked seasoning and texture-( it was supposed to have herbed breadcrumbs on top but didn't). Cheesecake was a fluffy, sugary mess with soupy whipped cream and amateur raspberry glaze. My dentist is gonna get rich from all my follow up visits after that dessert. Not really sure what part of New York this cheesecake was supposed to be from but they should have left it there.
