A friend of mine had a chicken sandwich and said it was the best chicken sandwich he has ever had - might have to give that a try on my next visit!! The Winchester is the one of the great additions to Wealthy St. in recent years. A yuppie stronghold, it's lead by an innovative owner Paul, the Daniel Boone of Grand Rapids gentrification. The chef creates five star cuisine at a three star price. Can't lose with the menu, though my beloved naan club has vanished. Great cocktails and beer selection. Staff is, as expected these new age gastropubs, adequate but lacks true brit service. The decor and atmosphere welcomes romantic dates and work groups alike. The relief that you won't have to worry about getting seated next to screaming children is also nice, this place has established itself as pro-babysitter. Their New Years Eve party is so fun you'd think it was a private party for you. Only a few things to protest. I wish the menu had braille because it is SO DARK while most of the patrons are still eating. I love the ambiance but at least have some candles, you can see people basking in cell phone lighting while attempting to read the drink list. Also they don't take reservations and sometimes it's too busy to even wait for a table. None of these factors are enough to stain a top rating. read more

Affordable heavenly seasonal local creations make the Winchester a go to when we visit GR. I'm happily content just looking at the garden they used from across the street sipping on a sangria. My better half wanted to try the 1/2 pig head, yeah, not on my tabletop please! So then we thought we would restaraunt hop trying little appetizers and visiting different places in East Town, by the time we finished, there wasn't room for round two! We started with the cheddar ale fondue which was a welsh rarebit with Bell's amber, fresh baked pretzel bread that was total amazingness! Then ordered a grilled cheese that was roasted butternut squash, goat cheese whip and pickled jalapenos on field & fire sourdough, yes indeed, the best grilled cheese I've ever had. French fries were done to perfection and lightly salted, making them perfect to sop up the rest of the fondue! I tried the Napa Valley Ca' Momi wine and it was everything it needed to be coming from California. Service was attentive, our server was knowledgeable, and everything came out in a timely fashion on a sunny Saturday afternoon sitting on the lanai al fresco style. Stopped here for lunch. I found the restaurant to be attractive with indoor or outdoor seating. There were high top tables, booths and small two person tables. The menu offered a range of many foods. I ordered the Cauliflower Salad, a Mediterranean influenced salad and the Pierogi's, a small dish with two pierogis and red cabbage. I enjoyed the food. A must try is the Bloody Mary, so delicious. Other dishes at the table were the Gyro served with kettle chips, Pear salad and the Turkey Sandwich. All equally delicious. As part of my Chicken & Waffle Tour of GR, The Winchester was next on my list. After being highly recommended to me by a coworker, we decided to aim for brunch on a Sunday as soon as they opened. I love that they offer parking right next to the restaurant! After being so excited I didn't have to parallel park, I got out my car to be greeted by their amazing 90s hip hop playlist. What an awesome way to greet your customers - loved the vibe. Their menu has a lot of options that I have to go back to try (poutine with cheese curds sound delicious). My coworkers enjoyed their Mimosa bar, and you definitely get a good amount of champagne for what you pay for. Their Chicken & Waffles come with a fried egg and an interesting twist of sausage gravy. That combined with the perfect breading of the chicken breast and the soft waffles and syrup and you cannot go wrong ordering this southern-inspired dish. I do not typically leave reviews, but my group's experience warrants this review. The waitress took our IDs for 30 minutes and accused us of them being fake. After she realized they were real, we did not get a single apology. Instead she was incredibly rude the entire dinner. I think she thought that being rude was quirky and funny but it was not. We were nothing but respectful, but she would make comments about how we were annoying (because we were reasonably frustrated about the fake ID accusation) and she even told one of my friends to shut the f*** up when the friend didn't know about a TV character that the waitress knew about.... Our Waitress LEAH C, was truly one of the most unfriendly and spiteful people I have encountered in the service industry. I would never call someone out by name. But last night was different...after continuing to be extremely rude and unfriendly to our table, We reluctantly placed a food order. My friend who is a vegetarian ordered a Vegie Patty. When our food came out our server for whatever reason plopped down a bunch of soggy burgers in the middle of the table and left without saying anything. Us being confused not knowing what is what, we got up and asked the host if he could send our server over so we could identify what is what. After our server comes over and we ask her this same question, her reply is "honestly im Sure they are all beef Pattie's, I don't know what is what"... So why In the world would you ever bring out a beef patty, knowing that it's beef and still try and serve it to someone that just told u they were Vegetarian. Having been a server and bartender, this is not acceptable! Had my friend been a Celiac, or allergic to anything I fear our next stop would have been the Hospital. This is NOT ok, In any way shape or form. Our server knowingly tried to serve my friend a beef patty, and ran away as our food was set down to probably hide the fact! Wow...we looked so forward to this place, only to be let down by the worst service I have experienced in the last 10 years of dining. The food is worth 4 stars. Don't get me wrong it was very good. We were seated promptly and courteously, and it went downhill from there. The waitress didn't come by for over 10 minutes. I am assuming it was the manager, eventually brought us water and took our drink orders after about 7 minutes. After the waitress made her appearance, somebody brought our drinks by. She eventually came bay and we were able to order. Starters came out, brought by some snark from somewhere. Delivered to the middle of the table, without a word and disappeared. But wait, how are we to eat them??? Zero plates or silverware. Waitress, nowhere to be found. I finally found 5 plates and sets of silverware and we could begin. The meal arrived a short time later, delivered by the same "friendly" delivery girl. Waitress finally made it around about 1/2way through the meal to check on us. By this time, we were out of drinks and water. She walked away. I got her attention and we got our refills. I asked her to tell the bartender to go a little lighter on the sweet vermouth for my Manhattan. Came back just the same. Ugh. Anyhow finished eating and left, but it was so disappointing. The vibe and look of this place is really cool. I like the open industrial look. The ramen was ok and had a lot of vegetables which is good but needs more noodles. The flavor is spot on though. I ordered the olive burger which was so good. It's pretty impossible to eat it with your hands but I managed with a fork and knife. Go support this local spot!! They are doing everything they can do be open during the current shutdown and they are doing an amazing job. They have 3 igloos and a 'truck' available to reserve in advance for an hourly rate. They also have a heated patio that is first come first serve. The service is great and they are taking all protocols necessary for COVID. We got the burger deal yesterday- $13 burger basket with any beer/cider on the menu. It was really good and fresh. I would definitely get the deal again. Plenty of food and at a great price. They also have warm Christmas lights up around the patio and the igloos are all light up and they have lit wreaths hanging up around the patio as well. It's a very cute place and a relaxing warm vibe. I was wearing a light winter coat and a winter hat and I was comfortable- not too hot and not too cold. The Winchester absolutely won me over with their Veggie burgers man. I am definitely not a vegetarian, but I do like good food. I remember the first time I went to their Monday night burger specials night, my burger was good, but my girlfriend's veggie burger blew my mind with the flavor and texture. This has happened every time I went back for the last 4 weeks. Their veggie burgers are so good!! Also, everything else I've had on the menu so far has just impressed the heck out of me. I've gotten to know the staff since I've come in so many times and they are all super friendly. 2. Butternut squash ravioli is to die for! I can't express it enough. It can be an appetizer or a meal. But if you get it as an appetizer, don't share it because it's really good. ***UPDATE: their menu has changed and they no longer offer the ravioli. This breaks my heart and I hope they bring it back. In the meantime, they have plenty of other great appitizer offerings to choose from, like the Culiflower head. 3. Great wines- I usually get a glass of Kung Fu girl when I'm in. Because - HYYYY-YAH! - I am a kick azz girl like that. 4. Wonderful local beer selection 5. They have dedicated vegan, vegetarian dishes on their rotating menu 6. They can alter dishes to meet your dietary needs without losing the flavor 7. I've come on 3 different years on New Year's Eve dinner and they have always done a magnificent NYE menus 8. I have been to the Winchester before and knew it had more of a bar scene to it than other places but thought Sunday brunch would be safe for a family environment. I was wrong. The music was 90's ganster wrap, Biggie, Dre, etc. I heard more Mother F@#$@ and N%$@% than I cared for at the time. This will keep me from coming back. The food was ok and I won't let the ambience ruin this portion of the review. My wife share the grilled cheese with my daughter and it was great, they only let me have one bite. I ordered the sloppy kelly or something like that but they were out. I opted for the french onion soup that was a salt bomb and seemed like it was microwaved? I would steer clear. I also had the spinich salad that was pretty good and I would order again. Just the right amount of dressing as well as crispy bacon, and radishes. The food was in all pretty ok, service was good, but the lack of respect for the customers in the music choice will keep us away for sure. read more

We recently tried the Winchester on a Saturday. All four of us had eaten there before on several occasions, and all had different experiences. We came for the Bloody Mary bar, which we sadly found to be out of nearly every "fixin" -- olives, celery, cheese were all out, and not replenished in the hour + that we were there. Our server came to our table, and was helpful in making a selection. Three of us got the French Dip ($8.5) and the other got the Mushroom & Beef Gnocchi (also $8.5, I believe). We received our food quickly, but realized we did not have silverware. One person in our group asked for silverware, and our server brought *one* set, not even checking to see if anyone else had utensils. Three of us never were given utensils or napkins. Another in our group then asked for water. Again, our server brought a carafe of water with one glass, and only enough water in the carafe for one glass-full. Another person at our table requested water, and he too got a separate carafe with only enough for one glass. Service aside, reviews of the food were mixed all around. By far, the worst was the gnocchi. It was greasy lumps of pasta, with shredded beef, overcooked, mushy and oily shreds of bell pepper with overcooked spinach in some sort of aus-jus style sauce. There was not a single mushroom in the "Beef and Mushroom Gnocchi". It was pretty clear the beef on the gnocchi was the same used in the French Dip sandwhich. Overall it was bland, mushy, greasy and an odd assortment of ingredients that resulted in a texture-less dish. For $8.5, I was pretty pleased with the French Dip. The beef was very rich and tender, though it was shredded instead of sliced. I prefer a rare sliced beef, but the variation was interesting and not objectionable. The bread chosen for the sandwich was a very soft french roll. The bread almost seemed a bit under-baked, and while it readily absorbed the au-jus, it seemed to be on the verge of disintegrating before dipping, even. A slightly crustier, heartier roll would have held up better and provided some needed variation in texture. The roll and beef tended to dissolve into one (delicious) glob. The beef was topped with a swiss cheese/horseradish sauce which I loved, though others thought the swiss and horseradish flavor was not coming through. I did not agree, and found it to be a nice touch, while not overpowering the rich beef flavor. The carmelized onions were well done, and added just the right amount of onion flavor to the sandwich. Overall, I enjoyed my food. My companions were slightly more harsh, and I will agree that the gnocchi was borderline disgusting -- coming from someone that loves gnocchi. The service definitely receives an "F", however. For the money, The Winchester not a bad deal at all, and the atmosphere is nice, albeit a bit noisy. If the service issues can be addressed and the food made a little more consistent, it will be a great "go-to" restaurant. As of right now though, I hesitate to recommend it give such mixed experiences over the past few years. read more

We had a really quick lunch here - would have loved to stay longer but unfortunately we weren't very hungry. (Darn you, large breakfast!) I had the fish tacos, which were good, and the fish was fresh. I would have liked it if the fish was a bit more flavorful and cooked just a tad less though. The salsa, guacamole, pickled radishes, and queso blanco in the tacos were fantastic and very fresh. Oh! The corn tortillas were very good too. The grilled scallion on the side looked appetizing but was impossible to eat. The grilled jalapeno also looked really good, but one bite and my eyes were tearing up. I guess it was a particularly hot jalapeno... or maybe I'm just a spicy food wimp. The black bean mash was really smoky and tasty but just a tad too salty. Unfortunately, I had saved it for last (the boyfriend made fun of me for it... "dessert??"). It would have perked up the not-so-flavorful fish. The boyfriend had the Korean BBQ pork sliders, which looked really good... from what I could tell, they looked like bulgogi (but made with pork shoulder instead of beef), kimchi, and perfectly buttered brioche buns. I didn't try the sliders, other than a piece of the bun to counteract the effects of the grilled jalapeno. This is why I can say that the bun was perfectly buttered, haha. To drink, I had a ginger peach cider (Vander Mill, Spring Lake, MI, 7% ABV) that was perfect for the sweltering July afternoon... refreshing, a little bit of ginger, kinda girly but not too sweet, buzz-inducing. Bonus: it was on draft! The boyfriend got Bell's Two Hearted on draft. The atmosphere was very chill, with some fun tunes playing in the background. Lots of people were enjoying the afternoon on the patio too, despite the 90+ degree weather. There was also a Sunday mimosa and bloody mary bar that I kind of regretted not taking advantage of (until I tasted my ginger peach cider! ahh!). Fresh dishes made with care, great beers on draft, nice atmosphere... I will be back the next time I'm in Grand Rapids! Hopefully the polenta fries will still be on the menu because they sound tasty. Honestly I have had some great food at The Winchester in the past but the last two times I went there it has been bad. So bad that I needed to write this review. Last time I went there a few weeks ago I got a burger. I asked for it to be medium and it was really rare, I ate it but didn't really enjoy the raw meat. Today I went there (hoping my last experience was a fluke) and ordered another burger (because I LOVE burgers) and I asked for it again to be medium. This time I received a severly burnt burger. Very, very disappointing. Especially since the burger is $11!!!! I then proceeded to pick off the burnt burger. The server came back, asked me how it was and I said well they burnt my burger and she insisted on taking it back. The server then brought me the second burnt burger set it down, left and never came back to see how it was. Needless to say I can't afford to drop $11 on food that is not good. I love this place. It's a great place to meet with friends to have dinner and drinks. They are always changing their menu so there are always new things to try. They also always have a good assortment of beer on tap. However, every time I visit, I have to get the Boulder Pork Green Chili. It is amazing (and pretty spicy). But one of my favorite aspects on The Winchester is the outdoor patio during the summer. It can be hard to find somewhere to have a meal outside in Grand Rapids, and The Winchester is my favorite place to do just that. I happen to be back in Grand Rapids, MI on my biannual business trip. As always, when I travel, I look for unique places to eat. Of course, with few connections to Grand Rapids, I turned to my trusted friend Yelp for a recommendation. At the top of the list was The Winchester. After reading people's reviews about the place, thanks JD H., and consulting with someone else from my office with whom I am traveling , we decided to take the plunge. It was a short drive from our hotel to the restaurant, despite my excitement of trying a "gastropub" for the first time, I was understandably worried about the potential of zombies that would be wandering outside of the Winchester. However my fears were allayed as we pulled up because it was not the same Winchester. There was ample street parking when we arrived, though the place seemed to be pretty busy. From the outside the Winchester did not seem like much, but once I entered it felt like we had been transported to another place. Dark wood, tall tables, big bar, and lots of light made this us feel at home and cozy. We were told to seat ourselves and found a quiet place in the back. Within moments, of sitting, our waitress Renee came by and took our drink orders. We explained we were on business and would need checks split, she did not hesitate as she told us that it was not a problem. In fact, she offered a variety of options of check splitting for us. After she brought our drinks we made our orders. Since everything looked so good, we decided to try a variety of the appetizers. We ordered edamame, sweet potato pierogies, Cuban carnitas, goat cheese fondue, Thai shrimp. The food was phenomenal and was well presented. Additionally, the price for each was very reasonable. I did forget to mention, they had a full bar and their beer and wine menu was decent with a lot of great options. Our waitress recommended the Moose Drool brown ale, now that I have had it, I would recommend it as well. It was much like a Newcastle, a good beer, but it was fuller tasting with a hint of caramel. I was extremely impressed by The Winchester, it really is the first gastro pub in Grand Rapids. The Green Well might make that claim, but its just a nice place to eat with a good beer selection. The Winchester captures the essence of a good pub, the chat is upbeat, the music is present without being deafening and rare for anywhere that offers food in Grand Rapids, its busiest time is not 6.30pm. One of our favorite restaurants in Grand Rapids after living here for four years. Their kimchi nachos are the bomb, as is their olive burger. Service is always prompt. Good beverage selection and nice outdoor patio for summer dining. read more

I liked the fact that you can sit outside, and our burgers were pretty good, but the service was surly and slow - I get slow, which is pretty common in the GR, but surly - no way. I never meet a surly server here. The outdoor area is great, and it's a nice relaxed atmosphere. The clientele will likely be more and more scantily clad as the summer approaches. The beer selection is good, and we brought our dog, so it was nice to be able to tie him up outside with us. read more
