In all my travels I have never had a bartender (server) as good as Miguel. I learned here that while in Montana ask and everyone is so nice and does their best to accommodate you. Miguel custom made me a beverage (since I was tired of usual beverage), prime rib was one of the best I have had. I strongly recommend this place. Paid $150 to eat our dinner out of a box. Went to dinner at The Windmill last night. Even though it was the holidays, they were greatly understaffed. We waited 2 hours to get entrees, but had to have them boxed up because we would have missed our plans. Not to mention our waitress was wearing a mickey mouse t-shirt. Went here for a valentines dinner with my wife. Big mistake. Upon arriving and telling the hostess we had a reservation, we were told "you are early would you like to wait in the bar or in the lobby". We were six minutes early, it took them 20 minutes to seat us. Strike 1. The room that we were seated in was so cold neither my wife or I could take our heavy winter coats off. After ordering the appetizer the food was plated wrong and we had to wait an additional 10 minutes to receive our properly ordered food (without eating utensils). Salad (I have had better at fast food chains). On a good note the steaks we ordered were expertly cooked, and delicious. For this reason alone I will give them 2 stars. Well it disappoints. Server was very nice and attentive, atmosphere similar to a bar and was clean and comfortable. The food though was just not good. We had 3 appetizers on our table, a soup, a salad and three entrees. I'd say they start with decent ingredients and ruin the dishes with awful sauces. Sugar and sriracha appear to be the favorite add of the chef but it's heavy handed and ruins the dishes. Lots of unflavored goo on dishes for presentation leaves seemingly decent ingredients in a sea of tasteless hell. The rest so obviously comes from Sysco single servings. Great location, lots of booze, maybe better to stay a bar and save the food service dollars. read more

We came for happy hour and dinner. Told my out of town guests the patio was fab. It had rained and tables were wet. We asked a young man who seemed to have the job of walking around tapping his legs. We asked him if the patio was closed. He looked out the window and mumbled something and walked away. There were 4 of these employees. We sat in the bar for happy hour, we were late, and wanted to get in on happy hour. We had to flag a waitress die. We asked her if the patio was opened. She said it had rained, duh! Best place for a special night out. Price is high but worth every penny. Service is astounding, had server named Shirley. Attentive and kind, fast but not obnoxious. The steak was perfect, and my date's fish was divine. Beautiful high ceiling, but it's still intimate. Love the atmosphere because it's open and you aren't trying to talk over other guests' conversations, etc. Have a drink by the firepit outside. I have been going to the Windmill my whole life...mostly for special occasions. I always order the ribs and prawns. I do miss the dark, cramped old location with its one-of-a-kind womens' restroom where you had to cross through one stall to get into the other. (Yes..it was odd.) The new location is beautiful, but has caused the prices to rise significantly. That just means I don't get there as often, but when I get my rib & prawn craving I'm there. They also have a very convenient take-out option where they'll bring the food out to your car. read more

Took my wife here for Mother's Day and it was one of the worst dinners I have had in a long time, the New York strip had more fat on it that it had meat and it was tasteless, my wife had the prawns they should of been called medium shrimp. The ice tea had no taste. The Mac and cheese my kids had was the highlight of the meal. And the 3 young lady's working the front desk where not train well and we're very rude. After problems on our last two visits, we hadn't been back to The Windmill in quite some time. One was food that tastes freezer burned and one was a drink that smelled and tasted like a cleaning product. We decided to try again last night. I ordered the baseball sirloin medium. The wait time was somewhat slow but tolerable. My salad arrives and there is an ant crawling on it. Probably should have gotten up then. When the entrees arrive for the four of us, my steak was very, very well done. The server takes it back and about 5 min later comes and says they are making a new one. Meanwhile, the other 3 start eating. One of the other diners ordered stuffed chicken. It was extremely dry with an inedible hard part on the bottom. The Chicken Marsala was supposed to be in a sauce, but it was swimming in a thin soupy broth. The other diners decide to eat their meals and are almost done, and still no steak. The server says it will be about 5 more minutes. The other diners finish and no steak. I call a server over and say forget about the steak. There is no use now. She then brings someone over, a manager? They bring the steak in a go box, take it off the bill and give me a gift card for another visit. Unfortunately, this will probably be 3 strikes and you're out. read more

Everything was great, except for the food. It was one of those times when you anticipate a nice dinner, but eventually regret not buying the ingredients and making the dinner yourself. To be fair, we visited the place during the holiday season, so maybe their regular chef was out on vacations, who knows. My family and I went to The Windmill to celebrate a special occasion expecting great things based upon recommendations from friends. We were sorely disappointed, however. Atmosphere One thing the Windmill has going for it is the atmosphere. Tall ceilings with large, wooden rafters, a grey stone fireplace, and an outdoor patio with fire contribute to a pleasant atmosphere. Service We arrived to the restaurant around 7:20. Our waitress did not come by to take our drink order until about 20 minutes later. Then, the drinks took about 10 minutes to arrive. Ok, a bit slow at first, but it will pick up, right? No. We ordered our meal when our drinks arrived and it didn't make it to the table until 8:50 - an hour and a half after we arrived. Our waitress later apologized for the slow service, claiming that we arrived when they were absolutely "slammed", which was hard to believe given the fact that the place was never more than half full the whole night. Food Bottom line: not worth the wait. The rack of ribs was enjoyable, save for the plastic platter on which it was served (not exactly what you expect for a $26 plate). My wife rated the sauteed prawns she ordered about a 5 out of 10. Like many American establishments these days, however, the lack of quality was compensated by an abundance of quantity. So if that's your thing, enjoy. Overall, a very unsatisfying experience. If you're looking for a nice night out in Billings, go to Walkers Grill downtown. You'll pay less, the atmosphere is better, and the food is far superior. read more

Wish this was my first horrible experience at the Windmill. Unfortunately it is my third. It's my fault for going back but my wife loves cream brûlée. Most dining in experiences are usually very good. But the pickup orders are a nightmare! I think they need a new manager. Julie is horrible! She is behind the bar washing glasses while her staff is sitting around. We were supposed to pick up our order at 5:40. My wife waited until 6:00 and then was told that they have it to the wrong person. I called and spoke to julie and she said the gave it to the wrong customer and they were very mad as well and were on the other line. She said our order would be ready in twenty minutes. I got there at 6:30 and waited for 40 minutes while they got it together. I left at 7:10. It still want ready. I hope hope whoever owns the windmill can resolve the problem with her. What a mistake. Jake's is as good as it gets in DC, NY, and other pretentious big towns I visit. Back to the Windmill. They served a great piece of cardboard I could have had in at the Pilot Truck Stop or other. I got the NY STRIP. My husband and I were in Billings doing some shopping. We decided to have lunch at the Windmill. Upon walking through the doors, the place was very clean, open, with a nice atmosphere. The hostess greeted us enthusiastically with a great smile. Once seated, we were quickly greeted by our friendly server. We both ordered the pot roast that was so wonderfully tender and very, very flavorful! Carrots were with the pot roast served on awesomely tasty mashed potatoes! We ate every bit of our lunch. I would've licked the bowl had I been at home! We had a great experience customer service - wise and ambiance-wise and were quite pleased with our food choice!
