Unfortunately I didn't have the best experience here. The place itself is very nice, great location, clean and great decor, which is why it's a 2 star review. We decided to eat there as it was a very busy day, this place had many empty tables and we were hungry and in a hurry, which I said before we were seated. I wholeheartedly agree with the reviews about the slow service, meh coffee and expensive prices. I found the servers inefficient and slow. Despite it being more than half empty, I had to ask for the coffee twice before they served it, the waitstaff was talking among themselves instead of waiting on the few patrons they had. I noticed that none of the tables had their meals. The main courses took very long to come out, the food was nice, but very expensive and in the end we were late because of the slow service. We had just arrived in Dublin and had a bit of an issue with our hotel, so we were ready to eat and didn't really care where. We walked along Bachelor's Walk and popped in to see if there was seating. They were a place that took reservations so we were lucky a table was available until a certain time - a bit of pressure but we we starving and knew we'd eat fast. The food was a little pricer than we'd have liked but the place was pretty classy and trendy so it was expected. I got ribs with a sweet bacon sauce and potatoes. The ribs were excellent and cooked well, and I wanted a lot more of the sauce just because it was so tasty. The potatoes were giant slices of purple potatoes which I don't care for - they're a little too starchy and have a strong farm flavour, but if they had been smaller sliced and/or fried, I could have still stomached them. Unfortunately, giant undercooked sliced of a tuber that I don't care for anyway are going to be left on my plate no matter how hungry I am. My mother's "fries" were also sliced way too big and were, as a result, under-fried. For a restaurant in Ireland, their potato game needs a lot of work. Overall, a very expensive but tasty dinner. However, this was more a place a local could take a date to than somewhere I'd put on my Dublin tourist recommendation list. read more

The service & food at Woollen Mills was great! We came with no reservations for breakfast and were seated right away. My only complaint is up the same alley as what has been posted on here by some others: bitter coffee and the service charge being added on the check. My wife and I ate here while we were visiting Dublin. I found the service to be very good. For what it's worth, we're from Los Angeles where wait staff = "aspiring actors." At the Woollen Mills I found the accents to be authentic and not simply "practice." And the wait staff were genuinely friendly. The food was also very good. Contrary to other reviewers, I found the menu to be clear, and I'm not a foodie. We ordered the Jerusalem artichoke hummus w/ roasted potatoes. It was fantastic. I ordered the ham hock. It was salty pork, which was exactly what I wanted. It came with black pudding and a fried egg. It would have benefited from either another egg or less 'hock,' but that's just me picking nits. My wife ordered the vegetarian "burger" which was impossible to eat as a sandwich, but which was otherwise alright. I would recommend against ordering it. The flavor was good, but it needed more chilies (remember, we're from LA), and the fact that it couldn't be eaten as a sandwich took a bit of its charm away. Basically, it needed a bit of vinegar, some fresh cilantro, the idea of roasted cumin, and more heat. But the base is there. The wine and beer menu was succinct but completely adequate for a restaurant of this type. I look highly on any restaurant with a limited wine menu that offers Alsatian Rieslings. read more

Was in the other day with the other half we shared the gambas for a starter which was delicious, if a little small to share. For mains I went with venison and he had the beef ribs, I found the venison itself to be great but I was slightly baffled at pairing the mash with the poached peach. We drank a lovely round Cote des Rhones with the meal which we both enjoyed. Service was the highlight of the meal, however, we had a gas young waiter from down the country (Wicklow I think) who was both helpful and entertaining, I'd nearly go back just because he (and the rest of the staff) were so lovely. The Woolen Mills was an excellent ending to a weekend in Dublin! The service was very friendly and sat us right away. The wine and drink list are extensive, and for those who prefer non-alcoholic drinks they have fancy homemade sodas that are delicious. I ordered the poached haddock that came with a bubble and squeak cake and a poached egg- one of the best seafood dishes I have ever eaten! Other choices at the table were the Mac and cheese and the fries with garlic aioli- also delicious. For dessert we got the bowl of ice cream- three different flavors, all super yummy! Love the room and the location. Was lucky enough to score the best seat in the house (I think), the back corner near the window, so was looking forward to a nice meal. But the food was really disappointing. Lots of corners cut and just not carefully prepared. First off, the mussels: They looked great, but tasted blah, not very fresh, maybe had been frozen. The sauce was milky, with not enough white wine, butter, or seasoning. It had slices of raw garlic floating in it. What good is that? Usually I look forward to dunking my bread in sauce, but not this time. The toasted bread slice that came with the mussels was nice, but it was spread with mayonnaise, which was a little strange. The side salad was swimming in a fairly tasteless eggy lemon dressing, which completely smothered the greens and yellow beets, and the whole point of eating a salad. We also got the chili, which is supposedly made with wild boar, and topped with avocado, sour cream, and cheddar. I doubt it was really boar, because it was pulverized into tiny bits, and the chili was lacking any real taste or richness. The "avocado" was the kind of woeful, tasteless "guacamole" that comes in tubes. I had to scrape it off, and I *love* avocados. Would have been nice to have ripe avocado slices instead. The cornbread was a dense, tasteless, inedible slab. I have tasted a lot of really good cornbread, and this wasn't it. The side of chips were fine and hearty, but oversalted. Basically, everything looked good, and the menu sounded great, but nothing tasted very good. As a final note, like I said, I *love* the decor, and I think it sets a great tone for casual but classy dining. But in the part of the room where we were sitting, they have industrial shelves set up with their dry good stores on them, so facing them is like eating dinner in the stock room. For instance, it didn't help when I realized there was mayo spread on the bread, and then I looked up and saw a huge plastic tub of Hellmann's mayo staring back at me. I know most restaurants use commercially-prepared ingredients instead of homemade, but it would be better to stick that stuff in the back. read more

Great place. Very good food made with high quality produce. They can squeeze a walk-in for lunch, but better to make reservations. Even though I live in Dublin for good few years now, I was recommended this place for best coffee in town by my work colleague, so decided to give it a go. I was very patient and waited around 5 minutes for the attention of the lady behind the counter as I was in great mood and it's the weekend. Cakes looked amazing. None of the cakes had prices displayed though just the names. I ordered tea, flat white, fruit scone just butter no jam and coffee and walnut cake. The lady's first words was :" There will be a delay in serving"- I said that's fine, no problem. Then the lady said: " Payment after when I serve you" which I found to be strange and I should have knew by then what's going to happen. The delay wasn't even that big, at least we didn't feel it, but we sat not even 1 m from the counter so the lady didn't nearly have to leave the counter to serve us. The coffee was the worst I ever had in my life- so bitter that I'd say the coffee machine wasn't cleaned for a week at least. Cake was super sweet - I'd say 500 kcal in that- pure sugar. And the best part- my fiancé went to pay- €15 for all that! ( including tea for €3!!! And my cake was €4.95!!!!!!) I would have never ordered it if I knew the price. The reason why the lady didn't want to take payment when I ordered is because if I had a receipt I could clearly see how long it took her to make it and is to wait -15 min! Also €1.40 service charge!!!!!! The counter wasn't even 100 cm from us! Just wow! Never again. Rip off and the waiter couldn't even remember who was having what. Avoid !!!!! I love how original this place is, and the staff are spot on. So friendly and sharp. The only reason I don't come here all the time is because of the price, it's a bit expensive. So it's more of a place I'd go to for a special occasion. However...I've now discovered they have a new lunch menu option as well as the full menu on offer, and this is really well priced. Pretty disappointed with my experience last night. We were seated upstairs and in a bad draft. A combination of cold air-con and a door open to a fire exit. They were unable to find a different table for us and couldn't turn down the air-con until the other diners were finished. I had to keep my coat and scarf on for an hour - I am not normally a cold person. I have Coeliac disease so I don't go out to eat that often, however I had mentioned the issue when booking so I figured there was something on the menu I could eat. I asked my server if there was a particular dish suitable for me when we were ordering. He told me I couldn't eat pasta - yes that is true. He didn't seem to know about the other things so he ran down to check with the kitchen. I appreciated the trouble and I know it can be a hassle when someone has a difficulty with the food. The chef said there were three dishes that I needed to stay away from so I ordered the pork which was supposed to be fine. It arrived with four large bread croutons around the lettuce and mushy pork. I didn't have the energy to send it back but I was unable to eat the croutons or the lettuce it had been touching. I regret not sending it back. I know a kitchen can't cater to every request but it should be easy to tell me which dishes are gluten free. The waiter was fine but looked very rushed off his feet. The man at the front of house was extremely nice and helpful. He was walking by and saw that we were cold (still in coats indoors) and attended to the air-con. It warmed up after an hour. The venue itself is fine. I like the decor and the toilets downstairs. The main room downstairs seems to have a good atmosphere. I did not like where we were sitting (upstairs beyond the balcony) and I don't understand why it was so cold for so long. The food is very ordinary. Apart from the crouton problem the pork was a bland mush. The samphire salad was ok. The broccoli was terrible. I won't bother returning. read more

Food is excellent - as an individual diner, the first question, more than 15 minutes after being seated, "are you good?" did not set a good tone. I requested to order and a clean glass. Later I ended up requesting a serving of bread from another server and ordering my dessert from the host. My husband and I were delighted to nab a table for dinner on the roof terrace one night. The mussel and leek pate was not fantastic, but it wasn't terrible. The pumpkin and butter bean salad, and the couscous salad were very good. Service was very hands off; we had to grab a random server in order to get our bill since our server was intent on ignoring us. read more
