This is one of those reviews I where I really wish you could give half points, The Woollen Mills would have definitely been a 3.5. I've been here twice, sometime last year and, more recently, last week. We had the rabbit ragu, which was really tasty (not the most generous portion size though), and the pork belly mac and cheese, which received good reports. The place itself is really nice - it has kind of an industrial feel to it, with nice lighting and an open kitchen (all good until some really potent fish dish was being prepared). The only thing I'm not overly impressed with are the prices. The starters are all around 12 euro and the mains range from around 17-25. The food was good, but in my opinion the quality doesn't quite match the price. Looking at the other reviews it appears I should go back and try some of their lunch options though! read more

I pass beside the woollen mills every single day and only stopped for coffee a couple of times. Today the weather is surprisengly sunny and I thought Why not try their lunch. I was welcomed and given a table ,as soon as, I stepped in. The place is really nice with wooden floor and walls and big windows overlooking the out door seating area from one side and the H'penny bridge from the other side. Any way, I ordered vegetarian soup which was very delicious, then I had Butternut squash bhaji with baby spinach, poached egg, mango marmalade & sheep's yoghurt and i would highly recommend it. And of course before I leave, I ordered a double maciatto ( good but not the best) and i took a glance on their cakes and macarons that look like come and eat me, but, I left it for next time. read more

Dinner was great. We sat outside on the front patio, and it was a bit cool but not bad. Good people watching along the river. The inside looked very cozy, and the bathrooms were very nice too. The desserts all looked great, but we opted for chocolate/peanut butter/Oreo, because obviously. I was shocked to find peanut butter anything, as well as Oreo anything, so to find them both together in one dessert seemed other worldly. The food. . . tries very hard. The menu was a little tough to decipher for the non-foodie folk. It was good, but it seemed to think it was better than it thought it was perhaps. I've been a few times now as the first time I went I had the ribs and haven't been able to stop thinking of their salty goodness since. I really like the vibe in the restaurant and the staff are really friendly, when you get them. I've been waiting ages in between each bit of contact with the staff which is such a pity as they are dreamboats once you get their attention. The food is delicious. Always a taste sensation whilst still allowing the ingredients to shine through. Sitting upstairs on the terrace is my fave, the only thing is the seats are the most uncomfortable thing you'll ever sit on. Try and save room for dessert, the Oreo and peanut butter cake is unreal. read more

Stopped in on a mission to find something sweet. I was hoping for a cupcake of some sort. They didn't have cupcakes but they had a frosted chocolate muffin that looked tasty so I got it to try. It was definitely no cupcake but it satisfied my sweet tooth. The frosting was right up my alley as it was not too sweet. It had an oreo type cookie on top and the plate was garnished with powdered sugar. It was definitely over priced at almost €5! Definitely not worth it! We were starved and tired traipsing around in the rain and saw this before we even checked the Yelp reviews, which confirmed our choice. We sat outside under the awning and the waiter said we could move if we felt rained on - which we did later on. It was towards the end of Sunday brunch but the wait staff was friendly. I ordered the spinach waffle sandwich WITH bacon (my waiter was clairvoyant and realized I wanted to defy this ova-veggie entree with bacon and so suggested it). My spouse got the butternut squash bhaji (fritter) plus we got a side of grilled peach salad and a roasted eggplant with lots of delicious stuff on top. We were blown away!!! Everything was very creatively combined, delicious, fresh and flavorful! We weren't expecting such a gastronomic experience!!! read more

My husband and I came here for breakfast on a weekday morning. He had the full Irish breakfast which was shared between the two of us since portions were generous. I had sesame-toasted aubergine wedges, which were very light and crispy on the outside and not oily at all. My husband had a cappuccino, which was very good, and my pot of rooibos chai was also excellent. We also got to watch the cooks lay out and prepare their lunch sandwiches right on the counter behind us. It was a very nice place for breakfast and I'm sure they do lunch and dinner equally as well. We were unable to get into The Winding Stair, the sister restaurant of The Whoollen Mills, and I was really disappointed. But... The staff at The Woollen Mills very graciously made space for us during the dinner rush. That alone, won points. However, our table of four had a fabulous dinner as well. My starter: Tin of Ortiz anchovies, too much Cuinneog Farmhouse butter, potato sourdough toast, shallots, capers & lemon. SOOOOO good. For dinner, I had Wild Irish Ard na Rí rabbit ragu, papardelle & Parmesan that was good. The pappardelle was fresh, but the rabbit was slightly dry. To be honest, I got a little bummed that I was eating rabbit about 1/4 of the way through, but that's my issue. I would go back again in an instant! read more

Glad I could get a reservation here on a Saturday at 7pm. I didn't call til 5pm. The food was very very good. The highlight for me was the pork belly with black pudding, sticky onions and mashed potatoes. The flavones worked well and the textures with the pork belly cracklings were fantastic. My wife's beef ribs were also very good as was the dessert sampler platter. read more

I ordered the Hake Smokies which was a creamy delight of smoked fish and tomato served in a small cup along with toast and a green salad. I also had a pear/carrot juice. Big on effort. We had hake cakes, the quinoa burger and an extra side of chips. Didn't finish any of it - as the serving sizes are generous. A for presentation, but that burger was impossible to eat with hands and the best thing about lunch was the chips. What makes this a 3 star as opposed to a 4 star was their service. We had 3 different people wait on us and all we seemed to do was wait. Wait for our order to be taken. Wait for our food. Wait for our waiter/waitress to check in and order another round of drinks, wait for the bill, and so forth. We ended up paying at the host stand and then ordering espressos directly from the cafe as that was faster. read more

Let me start by saying that I have never been compelled to write a review before, however after having brunch here I felt like I needed to. This isn't me writing a review for the sake of it, this is honestly an accurate description of the meal. The waffle sandwich had the texture of an old sponge that is due to be thrown out. Soggy, tasteless and drowning in congealed hollandaise sauce and wilted spinach. I can't stress enough how bad this dish was. To be fair the bhaji was nice, however so small that I was left hungrier than when I came in and resorted to picking through the waffle that my partner couldn't stomach. Coffee was nice. read more

Lunched here yesterday with my fiancé. I had the burger which was good actually but at €19 including fries it'd wanna be. Other half had a soup/sambo combo. Sandwich was huge & great value at €10. Service wasn't great to be honest. Only gets two stars purely on the fact that they automatically add a 10% service charge (for what exactly) onto the bill. This practice seems to be slowly creeping into more & more restaurants/cafes here & I totally disagree with it. It's not NYC!!! read more

There's something about the high ceilings and bright decor that makes The Woollen Mills an absolute pleasure to frequent...even when nursing a hangover and in pursuit of brunch. The menu offers a variety of breakfast options, ranging from a full irish, to buttermilk pancakes, to home-made yogurt and granola. I've never been a huge fan of the coffee at WM, but it does its job. The environment at WM makes it an enjoyable, relaxed, and highly comfortable place to have a leisurely brunch. It's location, right by the Ha'penny Bridge and the Liffey means you're right in the centre of town and can continue your plans for the day with ease. read more

We picked this new venue for my birthday last night and were very underwhelmed (this is only for the restaurant part, we haven't tried their pastries). The menu was confusing and incoherent but interesting. I picked the burger.... I always pick the burger. Beef cheek is supposed to be more tender but how would I know, it was a huge lump of tasteless overcooked beef. Then there was this inexplicable large and thick piece of bacon, equally tasteless, with bland melted cheese and the biggest slice of tomato I'd ever seen (it too, totally tasteless). There were this weird strips that I couldn't make out, I finally realised they were onions. The bun was lovely. The whole burger was extremely difficult to eat in bites, which I abhor. If you have to take it apart to eat it, it's NOT a burger. In short, it wasn't bad, it was just bland. And the very first time I couldn't finish a burger. My partner had the lamb ragu, and while he said everything was well cooked and tasty, the dish didn't come together as a whole at all and he would not have it a second time. We shared a plate of chips that were slightly above average. The place itself is confortable enough but unlucky for us our server was friends with the table next to us (he was very nice and we thought the service was spot on) so he stood and spoke to them a lot with his behind in my partner's face! I think I will give this place another try, perhaps it needs time to figure out what 'it' is. read more

Very cute place with a trendy atmosphere. The sleek industrial style interior compliments the modern menu that has a traditional Irish twang. The food was cooked to perfection and presented artfully to the table. The only issue was I asked for a coffee with milk and had to remind the waiter a few times about the milk. We just arrived Dublin after a long airport wait so it was a treat to be outside on the terrace. The service was fantastic, the food was great and it was a tasty dinner. Many of the reviewers griped about the prices; however, since our comparisons are from the States, the prices and local fare are in sync with our expectations. We had the anchovies, mozzarella dish, hake (fish and chips) and the fish of the day. I never eat bread and butter but since we were on vacation, I had both. Unbelievable! The combination of bread, butter, anchovies and capers was delicious. Surprisingly light and flavorful. Everything was fresh, distinctive and flavorful. The catch of the day was great. Great evening! Great views of the bridge. Terrace was wonderful - we were worried we wouldn't get service but our server was fabulous. Thank you! read more

A previous reviewer described this place as deliberately quirky which is pretty spot on. Came here for breakfast at about 10 on Saturday morning but the place was surprisingly empty given the Sales were in full swing around the corner. Anyway, the breakfast selection was ..... odd. I'm an eggs kind of breakfaster but no eggs could I find. In fact I could find very little I could even identify so I opted for the least peculiar item, a pork sausage meat and black pudding concoction with something called picalilly sauce on the side. Think of slices of beef Wellington filled with black meat and you get the picture. I still have no idea what picalilly is but it tasted suspiciously like plain old apple sauce to me. That said, it was all delicious although we could almost feel the arteries being hardened with every bite. Accompanying coffee was only ok. Plenty of 'quirky' tea options but only Americano coffee available which I thought was very bitter. All in all, a curate's egg experience. I perused the lunch menu on the way out. It was 'quirky' too but I will come back to sample it. One thing - they automatically add 10% service to the bill which is an odd, even 'quirky', thing to do in Dublin. read more

On first impressions. I'm impressed. Gorgeous bakery and takeaway coffee section downstairs. Restaurant spreads across two floors. We sat up stairs in the outdoors courtyard, the first time I visited. It was lunchtime so my friends ordered soup and sandwiches and a salad, I ordered from the main menu under the gruel menu. Their soup was served in big deep bowls, the sandwiches were packed and the salad was delicious looking and tasting as I couldn't help but help myself to a taster. I ordered the fried herring with brown bread. Mmmm Yum. On my second visit I ordered a slice from the humongous sausage roll in the takeaway bakery section - it came with apple sauce and I couldn't help but order coffee and a freshly baked scone - all were devoured at my desk in work. All were scrumptious. The last visit took me upstairs again but this time indoors to one of the rooms that looks out onto the quays and the ha'penny bridge - it's an airy, bright and minimalist room and my choice of dish was the beef cheek burger which came with no side, something I was surprised at when I ordered but glad of when it arrived at the table as it was a big one! Juicy, tasty and I actually had to cut it in half to eat it - I'm not the kinda gal to cut my burgers! Anyhoo over all the food is brilliant. The staff are friendly. Fabulous place. Buzzing all the time. Often has queues out the door, it's that popular! Upstairs is light and airy, with beautiful views of the Liffey and ha'penny bridge. Downstairs has a great atmosphere beside the kitchen. Food is unusual and always tasty. Fish and chips, burgers or their pumpkin salads - all equally delicious! Highly recommend. Nice looking place, a bit London, but ok we copy everything here. Service was weak. I asked for a coffee, waitress was too informal each time she came to the table (darling, sweetie, love, honey etc.) and she was younger than me, which just seemed odd. If I was buying apples on Moore street then that is okay, it is part of the old Dublin landscape and it is charming. I am far from a prude but it just seemed condescending and she clearly has damn all training. She never brought the coffee. I asked her colleague, who apologised and gave it on the house. It was ok coffee, went cold very fast, cup was too small. So many places are all about the look, the image and the scene, but they forget the fundamentals of good service and product. I also ordered two sides, a broccoli stems with satay sauce, which was good and samphire with pear and hazelnut. This was also interesting and good, if a bit salty. I know samphire is salty but it seemed as though it had been further seasoned. I want to like the place and I probably will give the full food menu another try though it looks very expensive. The wine list has interesting wines, well chosen, but sadly very expensive for what they are, the mark up is massive. There is no getting around that fact. Why? Oh and the 10% service charge is a bad joke. Give service, get tip. Not the other way around. read more

A perfect place for lunch, ticks all the boxes so gets all the stars! Been wanting to go for ages since I've heard a lot of good things and the menu was right up my street so finally went today for lunch. The restaurant is in a great location, right at ha'penny bridge and is a really nice bright, modern space with great views and people watching. Nice open style kitchen and you can see all the delicious looking salads, sandwiches and baked good laid out as soon as you walk in. The menu is exciting and innovative with all sorts of inventive options. Big vegetarian section on the menu too which is a big plus for me. I went for the salad plate which was a generous size and had three really tasty salads on it and came with a slice of lovely brown bread. Got a coffee and a couple of cakes to share for dessert too which were delicious. Had a difficult time deciding on which cakes to go for as they have loads on offer, all of which sounded so interesting and looked delicious! We went for the orange and pistachio polenta cake and the caramel slice which were both perfectly done. Will have to go back to try all the others! The coffee was especially good too. Everything came out really quickly, despite the place being packed and the staff were all extremely friendly, good humoured and attentive too! Definitely worthy of five stars! read more

Was looking forward to brunch here and the experience was nothing close to good. Welcoming staff member was the best we got, all else after that went down hill fast. Our waiter was the rudest waiter I have ever dealt with in all my life. He was rushing us with the order and didn't seem to have interest in answering any food questions we had to ask. I ordered the full Irish which was anything but tasty , it was so bland and disappointing. I further observed the waiter deal with other customers and he was just as rude and not very helpful. Be careful also folks, this place adds 10% service charge automatically , I told lady at till that I was not tipping because of awful service and she sort of rolled her eyes , I proceeeded to explain why but she didn't seem to care at all. Absolutely fabulous meal here recently. I had a huge bowl of cockles and mussels that came with a delicious side of chips and garlicky mustardy slathered toast. It was so so good, I wanted to lick the plate. It's a really cool restaurant, great for gazing out the window at all the passing foot traffic. The staff were professional but a good laugh too. My fellow diners were all as suitably impressed as I was. Would be quick to recommend to anyone visiting the city, it's only a quick hop from Temple Bar and it's many tourist traps and has really awesome *proper* Irish food. read more

I love the location and the history behind the building - if you check the "about section" of their website it will tell you that James Joyce worked there! Went for lunch with my fiance and the future in laws. Arrived just before one. Managed to get a table for the five of us for just over an hour without a reservation on a Saturday afternoon. Cosy long seats mixed with seats that wouldn't look out of place in a primary school. The menu is a bit odd. This is a place where you can choose from coddle to pulled pork to tandoori chicken to schnitzel to pork belly mac and cheese all served alongside cocktails and craft beer! I can't take away from the fact that the food is bloody good! I chose the tandoori chicken on sourdough. I ordered it with salad (€10.95) and I'm sure it would have been fab but I was so full after the sandwich I ended up leaving it behind. My fiancé chose the sweet potato and quinoa burger (€11). His little brother chose the tuna burger with sweet potato wedges (€20) - which he very kindly let me try! The pineapple, mango and avocado salsa was amazing and the chipotle mayo went really well with the sweet potato wedges. His parents made a poor choice as they went for the pork shoulder sandwich (Served with soup - €9.95) None of us realised when we placed the order that this wouldn't be out of place across the river in Bison Bar or Pitt Bros (Didn't try the pork though so can't actually tell you if it was anywhere near as good as either spot!) All told it was OK.. Not sure if I would go back but it is a good spot for lunch. read more

We had just arrived in Dublin and had a bit of an issue with our hotel, so we were ready to eat and didn't really care where. We walked along Bachelor's Walk and popped in to see if there was seating. They were a place that took reservations so we were lucky a table was available until a certain time - a bit of pressure but we we starving and knew we'd eat fast. The food was a little pricer than we'd have liked but the place was pretty classy and trendy so it was expected. I got ribs with a sweet bacon sauce and potatoes. The ribs were excellent and cooked well, and I wanted a lot more of the sauce just because it was so tasty. The potatoes were giant slices of purple potatoes which I don't care for - they're a little too starchy and have a strong farm flavour, but if they had been smaller sliced and/or fried, I could have still stomached them. Unfortunately, giant undercooked sliced of a tuber that I don't care for anyway are going to be left on my plate no matter how hungry I am. My mother's "fries" were also sliced way too big and were, as a result, under-fried. For a restaurant in Ireland, their potato game needs a lot of work. Overall, a very expensive but tasty dinner. However, this was more a place a local could take a date to than somewhere I'd put on my Dublin tourist recommendation list. read more
