I like this place BUT I always leave with a slight nagging feeling... So let me start by the things that put me off - and make this more of 3.7 stars review: - The coffee isn't good. I'm sorry, but it just isn't, and that's a big let down not only if you're finishing a meal with it but especially when you go there for some (delicious) cake and want a nice hot drink to go with it. - I think everything is overpriced. - The dishes are a bit all over the place, and that extends even to the salads. I love that they have a lot of different ingredients, some that you don't commonly see being served in most places, but just because you have them it doesn't mean you need to use them all at once. However, this place is good. Even though it gets quite full at times there's always someone there to find you - or not - a table without making you wait around too long. Service is nice and friendly, even if a bit sparse at times. The space is lovely, and it's maybe its most attractive feature. First you have the beautiful renovated façade, with its cast-iron frames and pillars. The ground floor consists of an open plan facing the kitchen area, plus a small deli to the side where you can find their yummy cakes. There's also some tables outside on occasion. Upstairs there's more room, including a beautiful airy terrace that's perfect on a warm sunny day. The whole place feels cozy and calm, the décor is simple, hinting at a rustic feel. Even the bathrooms in the basement level look good! The food is nice, between a lighter lunch menu that includes salads, the deli pastries and sambos, and a dinner menu, they certainly have a diverse offer throughout the day. The dinner menu has plenty of fish courses, but also good vegetarian options, both of which make me so happy to eat here. The drinks list is also good and they went to the trouble of finding nice pairings, particularly for the desserts. Safe bet for a casual but nice meal, anytime of the day, even if a little bit dear for what it is. read more

Our favorite place to go for breakfast or just coffee and a pastry. The people here were helpful, even letting us put our two bags up by a pillar out of the way. We were one of the first in the place for breakfast after arriving early in the a.m. on our flight from NYC. This is a lovely place with comfortable seating. We had cappuccino, with the full breakfast and the poached egg breakfast. Both were filling. Everything was cooked just right. Went here for brunch last sunday and we were seated on the upstairs terrace - which was really quite lovely overlooking the liffey. The beardy waiter was efficient and friendly. The location probably explains the ridiculous prices. Almost all dishes on the brunch menu were well over 15 €. The burger costs 18€?!? A bowl of cockles and mussels 23 €! These are prices you normally would expect to pay for dinner. Even though there were about 20 brunch options (quite original options too, it has to be said), none of them were particular healthy. Me, trying to be good, ordered the poached eggs with artichoke hummus and pitta bread. It came with 2 aubergine fritters. Tasty enough, but worth the €16,50? ...Me thinks not!!! The previous day I had a similar brunch elsewhere for nearly a tenner less which tasted just as nice. The coffee wasn't great...quite bitter. This restaurant is a must see when coming to Dublin. We sat on the rooftop overlooking the river and had a lovely evening. I started with the avocado hummus and would recommend it in a heartbeat. Lovely warm ambience with an open kitchen and rustic wooden tables with comfy cushions... I could easily while away a good amount of time here. Service was efficient and friendly although the waiter had to run to and fro from the kitchen to enquire about gluten free options for my coeliac friend. The food menu was split into Fish, Meat, Vegetables with a menu dedicated to the old Gruel restaurant. Personally I found the last menu most interesting and I ordered the turkey and sage schnitzel which was lovely and hearty. To be honest, I was slightly wary of black sole tongues and ox tongue fritters on the other menus! Other dishes selected by my companions included the roast chicken, the bacon rubs (GAW-JUS!) and the pork shoulder which all went down very well. Desserts included chocolate and orange cheesecake, coffee walnut cake and Jaffa cake + Ferrero Rocher ice cream. They tasted as good as they sound but I'll recommend to share as they are quite rich and come in generous servings. It came to about €75 per couple for our group of 6 for 6 main meals, a couple of sides, 3 bottles of wine and 4 desserts. Totally annoyed by the service in here. It just ruined the whole experience. All these new hip places don't know how to act around diners. It's like they know they will get the crowed so who cares. They gave us a table upstairs tucked away. When the waitress was near (I had to take advantage as who knows when she would be back up) and had taken another order I shouted 3 times for attention and she walked off. Another diner got her attention and she said I will be with you in a few minutes. That's all she had to say instead of ignoring me. And I was loud! Anyway they brought the food which was lovely. French toast and my boyfriend got the fry. He didn't get toast so he had to go downstairs to ask for the toast. 10 mins he waited for toast until I got up to go ask for it. I asked the waitress and she said oh here it is as it sat on her tray while she stacked glasses. So, it was between Christmas and New Year that sleepy twixmas period perfect for long relaxed lunches. The type of thing I couldn't think of a better place for than the Woollen Mills. I have to say they had me at hello. It's been a long time since I've come across a menu so good, varied, and interesting as what's on offer here. Really appreciated the Nod to Gruel, that got me feeling very nostalgic! I had a pulled pork bun and salad - simply it was delicious! My friend went for the Venison tagine which again was delicious, a glass of local liberties beer and some wine made for an excellent lunch. Service was friendly and efficient and despite the restaurant being packed everyone seemed to be in-sync and absolutely on top of all their customers. Lovely lively place for food, excellent for larger groups because they offer big tables. The indoors are a bit too noisy and crowded, and there could be more space in-between tables. Waiters are great, helpful and very friendly, and they seem to know the menu really well and will enjoy explaining details of the sandwiches ("sambos") and soups. I ordered me the "Hummous" sandwich, which comes with artichoke hummous, pickled peppers, char-grilled broccoli and beets on jalapeno cornbread. Last time I checked, people go to restaurants for food, not for attitude from some waitress who can't even get my order right (and gives me a problem when I tell her kindly that she messed up). The service here is ABYSMAL. It's a beautiful restaurant and the food is quite good but if I wanted attitude I'd go right home to my mother and get a good dose. :) Not a fan. read more

The mac and cheese was good- but the salad on the side was a bit awkward. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing! I've never had one this good! The cake was just perfect consistency and slightly warm- not too sweet- the ice cream and caramel they use are perfect. I'd definitely recommend it! I must say I'm a sucker for coffee shops with a nice decor. The wooden mills is one of them. If you like vintage/ hipster/industrial places, you'll simply love it. Now to the REALLY important stuff: FOOD!! They have a very nice selection of sandwiches and cakes, if you're looking for a more substantial meal, head to the restaurant area on the right. We ended up going here twice in one day, but completely by happenstance. Booked a 9:30 AM reservation for breakfast via OpenTable, but didn't seem necessary as there was plenty of space at that hour. We were seated and though our drink order was taken right away, we had to flag down a second waiter because the first/host had a miscommunication and they were never put in. I was rather impressed by their coffee/tea selection, ordering a sort of DYI Black Chai. Both the Peanut Butter French Toast and the Ha' Penny Fry Up (pictured) were sizable and delicious. After a long flight we finally made it to Dublin! We headed straight to our apartment to drop off our luggage and then grab a bite to eat. We found this restaurant right next door. I love the decor of the restaurant. Our waiter was friendly and took our order right away. We all ended up ordering the soup and sandwich deal for under €10. I ordered the turkey sandwich with the soup of the day, broccoli soup. The sandwich consisted of turkey, cheese, chipotle mayo, and guacamole. I asked for no pickled gherkins and mayo on the side, but the waiter said that all the sandwiches are pre-made so they cannot be customized. He was able to take out the gherkins but this was still a downside. The sandwich was ok but I wouldn't order it again. Soup was also just ok. For dessert we had the chocolate cake. When I asked the waiter how big a slice was he said he would get us a large slice so we could all share (it was 6 of us). This was really nice of him to do. And the cake was delicious! read more

So, I liked this place a lot. The service was excellent - someone greeted me immediately when I went inside the door and offered me numerous seating options - (outside on the terrace downstairs, outside on the terrace upstairs, inside next to the big windows upstairs so you feel like you're outside, inside downstairs so you're snug and warm, etc). I selected the inside upstairs option, and it's such a nice place to sit. There are big windows all around the walls, looking down over Liffey St and the Ha'penny Bridge. The menu is a tad confusing. It's not outlined like a standard menu; it's split into vege, meat and fish, then you pick what you want to eat based on the price - the pricier it is, the more likely it is to be a big plate; the cheaper, the smaller it'll be (or this is how it was explained to me by the waiter). Kind of an odd way of doing it. I got a vege burger and wedges with hummus. Both were beautifully presented and nice. Not amazing, but yeah they were nice. If you are looking for a place to do some work from, they have lots of plugs, and they don't really bother you, though they don't have their own wifi, they have Bitbuzz which I find to be a bit irritating, but each to their own. I didn't have room for desert this time, but the cakes and pastries looked amazing, so I'll definitely be going for a crack of them next. read more

Having been a fan of The Woollen Mills as a fabric shop before renovation I was eager to check it out, so I decided to meet a friend for lunch here. The place looks fantastic, an the sight of the baked goods just draws you in! However I won't be returning for lunch here any time soon and here is why... From start to finish I found the service terrible. I waited a long time to get seated even though there were 4 staff members looking at me as I stood at the entrance. When we got seated I ordered from the lunch menu which i found very overpriced (vegetarian burger for €11) which came with no side salad or anything. The burger was large and tasty but the actual patty had a very strong floury taste. My friend ordered a coffee and scone, which at first she was told u can't really order that to sit up here but seeing as your friend is getting food it's ok. I was really unimpressed with this, especially seeing as how pricey your menu is, nothing should be said to someone who may be seeking a cheaper option or isn't that hungry. I mean does it mean unless you order from the lunch menu your not worthy of a table on there terrace floor? Are you able to sit downstairs or outside or for that type of order are you only allowed take away? This is a weekday lunch people what's with all the rules?? Speaking of this coffee and scone...... They never came! We reminded the staff and then the scone came but no coffee. We then reminded the staff a further 2 times but the coffee still never came! After this, we felt asking again would be a waste of time, I had long finished my burger an we were both now craving some java so we decided to leave and get coffee elsewhere. We walked downstairs to get the cheque where we got a clear distinction that we were burdening the waitress because nobody had brought our cheque an she had to manually look up our table. On top of all of this you get a 10% service charge automatically added to your bill for the pleasure!! Now do not get me wrong. I'm more than happy to tip, I usually try to always tip 15% but I am a strong believer in having the choice about it. Especially when I've already paid for an expensive meal. Automatically charging me 10% for bad service is shameful. So I recommend if you want to try out this restaurant get take away, I'm almost positive that selecting a goodie from there take away counter an sitting out of bachelors walk will be a more enjoyable and affordable experience. 1 star for there truly awesome looking bakery section 1 star for the design and layout of the restaurant. The terrace is beautiful and cosy with outdoor heating. **The 5 star breakdown** -1 for expense and value for money -2 for bad service and automatic service charge on a lunch menu. read more

The Woollen Mills is one of those restaurants that after one visit I know I'm going to be coming back to it again and again. The food is delicious between myself and my better half we got the beef burger and sweet potato veggie burger. We shared one bowl of chips which was plenty! The chips come in a big portion and plenty to share between 2 particularly as the burger itself was so huge. I also tried their home made pumpkin, orange and peach lemonade which was very tasty. My burger(beef) was amazing, The menu is decent and give a fair bit on choice, I love the way everything is worded on it! It reads like an erotic novel for food, every thing sounds delicious on it. The staff are very welcoming, friendly and tentative. Our waitress came over to our table two or three times and I noticed her drifting to each table checking up everyone which was really good to see. The kitchen is open so you can look in and watch and listen to the chefs work and cook the food which I love. And there is a upstairs where you can look out a glass wall over the river liffy which I am going to make a point of sitting beside next time I go there. read more

Let me start off by saying AMAZING service. It was really great. I went here with a friend for lunch and they were quite busy, we were seated quickly and got our menus. I ordered a burger, GF of course and I was told that it would come with a bun, after waiting for more almost half an hour the food finally arrives and it has no bun, just a piece of meat, some bacon, cheese and a tomato, it was very delicious no doubt but not quite a meal, the fries were decent but my favorite bit was the strawberry/basil soda they make themselves, it was amazing. Dessert was also good, Chocolate orange cheesecake and my friend had a berry tart and both were really good. Now everything in this place looked amazing but it just needed that extra something. I might go back and try it again sometime. read more

This would be one of those places I want to give 3.75 stars. I was wandering slowly for once in my quest for a spot of lunch and chose here, having walked past it a thousand times. The greeting was good and I got a nice table outside on the street to watch the passers-by. On checking the menu I got a bit of a shock, it was far more expensive than I had anticipated. Luckily there were a few cheaper options and a soup and sambo that sounded pretty good. Strangely though, the sandwiches are all pre-made, so I had to scrape the cheddar out of my Turkey ciabatta with a knife. For a tenner, I thought it was a bit offputting. All that said, when I got to eating my soup&sambo, it was absolutely delish. Perfect amounts of fillings and guac/mayo. The cheese was unmelted so easy to scrape off, and the soup (parrot & carsnip) was very tasty. Service was good, and they add on a service charge which I'm fine with-- made me feel a bit generous when I added to the tip. Nice experience overall! read more

Super cool little cafe located right near the north side of Happeny bridge. Love the decor inside. All of their amazing cakes and pastries are all baked in house each morning. I went for a cinnamon bun with pistachios and a latte. The spin on the cinnamon bun ended up being a treat and I really loved the atmosphere inside the cafe. Based on my own experience and that of other reviewers I found the service here to be lacking. My friend and I came here for a catch up over coffee and cake. The hostess at the door barely mustered polite civility in seating us. We were seated at the benches to the left of the main entrance - the benches were horribly cramped together I felt like I was in an old convent - I had to climb over the other diners on the way to the bathroom as there was no space between benches to even fit one leg, unbelievably impractical and unwelcoming way to get more bums in seats! After 3 attempts at catching a waitresses attention I was able to order a hot chocolate, which at €4 was expensive and unremarkable. My friend had some sort of sticky banana cake, offputting in its claggy sweetness. Her coffee also tasted burnt. The only virtue of this place is its location beside the picturesque Ha'Penny Bridge, but I don't think I'll be making a return here in the near future. The toilets were contemporary, clean and modern, my favourite part of my visit - just before I left! Nothing special about this place, despite its own notions. read more

Husband and I stopped here as part of a food tour and we're so glad we did! He tried the mussels and I had the butternut squash bhaji- it was so interesting to find a restaurant with such a wide range of cuisines available. The bhaji was one of the best vegetarian entrees I've had in a while, served with mango chutney, sautéed spinach, a poached egg and sheep's milk yogurt.
