A solid bar near Astor Place. I loved the ambiance here, as we easily spent 3 hours catching up with friends and sampling through various cocktails. The cocktails are delicious - not too strong or watered-down. I tried the Gin N' Roses, which was beautiful with rose petals, and the Wren Old Fashioned, which was on the sweeter side with the cherry liqueur, but I still enjoyed it. I also tried my boyfriend's hot apple cider and the hot toddy, which were too sweet for me but he liked it! For nibbles, we split the calamari, artichoke and goat cheese dip, and the churros. I thought that the snacks were just ok. The calamari was flat and failed to retain its crispiness. The artichoke and goat cheese dip were one-note and too heavy. The churros were too crispy and saccharine sweet with the caramel sauce. It does get quite loud in here, so be prepared to lean in close or shout throughout the night or just pretend that you can hear what the other party is saying. Between the noise level and the so-so snacks, I debated giving three stars. But service was superb and the ambiance really lovely, that I would return and try other snacks instead. read more

Previewing the menu and seeing some delicious french toast was on the menu, my body was ready for Saturday brunch at The Wren! We made it over and luckily found a seat immediately on a Saturday around 11:45AM. The waitress gave us some menus on a mini wooden board, which just added to the rustic vibe The Wren was going for. Dim lighting, wooden furniture, and scented soy candles gave a welcoming but refined feel around the restaurant. The waitress came back around 5 minutes later, and I ordered my French toast. About 20 minutes later, she returned with all of our food. The French toast wasn't what I expected. Rather than brioche bread, it looked more like constructed pieces of Granny Smith apples and fluffy bread/cake. Easily cut with a fork, the french toast melted into a cloud of cinnamon and apple! Although tasty on its own, it paired extremely well with the plentiful amount of cream cheese frosting placed on the side. Although very delicious, the french toast was dense. I found it difficult to finish the whole serving, and tasting the same flavor over and over again turned monotonous. It was more enjoyable with the several savory bites of their sriracha sausage sandwich! What a wonderful place to have brunch! I would recommend The Wren to anyone in the area! read more

A classic on the Bowery. Casual and atmospheric for brunch or dinner, more of a party scene late night (especially downstairs). It feels like going out somewhere cool, without the pretention. The menu is nicely edited: it's manageable and not overwhelming, but you still feel like you have choices. The cocktails are the draw and rotate on a somewhat regular basis. They have an air of effortless cool. Unique and delicious but not stuffy. Current favorite is the Wren-quila which is a take on a spicy margarita made with grenadine and pink peppercorns. I'd describe the food as nicer-than-a-bar but more-relaxed-than-a-restaurant. Burgers and fries are popular but on my most recent trip the kale and artichoke dip disappeared so fast, we had to order a second. The shishito peppers have a seasoning on them that makes them stand out from what you're used to at every restaurant in town. Speed of service is suffering dramatically during COVID, but we need to make some allowances for our restaurants who are suffering. I am not a fan of fig but the actual greens, Feta cheese were very good and not overpowering the greens. The Prosciutto was rather salty. Note: Boisterously loud! Very hipster. I had to scream loudly to speak with my friend-- not conducive for conversation as it is inaudible. The Wren does have an extensive cocktail selection, but no Pimms despite of an English bar. The service was bad, and my $13 hot spiced apple cider cocktail was so gross to the point I had two sips and left it at the bar. My friend said her jalapeño-infused cocktail wasn't good either but she forced herself to guzzle it down because...no alcohol left behind. Look, no business is perfect so maybe it was just a weird night here. We were looking for a brunch place in the area that was relatively quiet for good conversation. The Wren fit the bill and on top of that they served great food. We had the breakfast BLT and the sausage sandwich along with some drinks. The sausage, egg and cheese at a food cart near my office was flawless, but this sausage sandwich is perfection. The fried egg was fluffy - how did they do that!!? The bun - I believe a brioche - upgraded the standard NYC bread roll. The margarita was on the sweet side, but there was a spirit balance so it went down smoothly enough to order a second. It is a fairly small spot, with a painted sign and a sort of rustic interior. It seems a bit more West Village than East Village, a bit more English/Irish pub than dudes chugging beers and high-fiving. The bartenders quickly went from guest to guest, knocking out drink orders. Came here on Sunday around 11pm for brunch, it was not packed at all. The front of the restaurant is a bar set up, spacious with bar tops and TV. Towards the back is for table seating, and it has like the old barn feel. We ordered a pitcher of white sangria, avocado toast, BLT and trout salad. I had the trout salad, and to be honest, I never order salad for brunch, and I was surprised on how filling and how tasty it was. The trout was a bit salty with refreshing salad dressing. My friends had the avocado toast and BLT, they both said it was very good. The white sangria is $35 and can fill one full cup and one half cup per person. Which was enough for us. We hosted welcome drinks at The Wren before a family wedding. Elizabeth walked us through every detail ahead of time so that by the night of the event, we were nothing but excited. We live out of town and hadn't seen the space in person and were so pleased. Very attractive with seating for guests, a convenient food station, and dedicated restrooms. I popped in for a midday lunch with a friend so it was quite empty. The waiter (whose name escapes me) was nice and friendly. Between the two of us we ordered: Beer battered fish and chips Maple sausage sandwich a side of brussels sprouts to split Overall the food was good. I did enjoy the sandwich. My friend was not crazy over the battered fish and chips though. What we both were crazy for was the side of Brussels sprouts which really was the star at the table. The honey mustard drizzled over them with the thick cut applewood bacon pieces just bought the entire fish together. This is a must try! The cocktail list is innovative and I tried a bourbon based cocktail with honey and pear. I usually don't like cocktails with pear because most places use awful tasting artificial flavoring but this drink was very good. I'd definitely come back again and also to try their food. The Wren is a cool gastropub on the Bowery in lower Manhattan. The space it occupies has likely seen many businesses come and go and it has managed to take the space and turn it into a welcoming restaurant/bar. When i visited there was outdoor seating in front. Inside is a bar area with some additional seating for meals in the back. The interior looks almost like someone's kitchen and dining area. It has a very comfortable feel to it thanks to the wood, colors and lighting. During my visit I ordered the beef jerky and the pan roasted chicken (which included squash puree, brussel sprouts and pickled raisins). The beef jerky actually came out warm and the chile-lime spice on it was fantastic. It also had a great chew to it. Not too tough, not too dry. Just right. The chicken was delicious with a great smokey flavor. The sides were also great, particularly the sprouts. Service was fantastic. My waitress was super attentive and checked on me a few times during the meal. I sat outside thanks to the weather being just right and it was very comfortable. Bonus: if you like dogs you get a virtual parade as you eat. The Wren was a great place to have dinner and I recommend it highly for its comfortable feel, decor and delicious food! read more
