We all live in the yellow submarine... I can't seem to get that song out of my head... We stopped at the yellow submarine for lunch out of convenience. The restaurant is clean, basic, and just okay. We ordered different sando's, but pretty much all had the same take away, feeling after being served, and trying to eat them. My steak and cheese was just OK. I found the sandwich to be very underwhelming, and lackluster at best. The one thing that the sandwich had going for it is the price point. It was reasonably priced, especially by San Francisco standards. The produce on the sandwich was lighter than expected, but it also just did not have that fresh taste to it. The meat should've had some sort of flavor and it didn't. The sandwich roll just wasn't good. I wanted that fresh pillowy experience, and instead it was bland and overly firm. Was it stale? Well the good thing is I have always liked their steak and cheese sandwiches , their's is probably one of the best I'm pretty sure this is a family run business. I don't remember ever having their fries before but they were flat like chips, inconsistent thickness , they were not crisp at all and very greasy. They Other thing that was a little alarming was the cleanliness of their front window and their sign out front above the restaurant can make your mind start to wander toward what care is taken to clean the restaurant. My go to spot for huge subs! I've tried pretty much all of the different combinations and flavors of sandwiches. The sandwich that I typically stick with is their Italian combo. They pack it with a ton of meat and it's normally made very evenly so you get a good amount of ingredients in every bite. All of their sandwiches are made on the soft roll and it goes great with all the different combinations. You can also order their housemate chips, but I typically just go with bagged chips. The service there is amazing. I think it's run by just a small family. They are always super kind and polite and always giving you a smile when making your sandwich. This place has been around forever and owned by the same family since 1975. Great service, very friendly definitely feels like a neighborhood spot. I had a turkey sandwich with the "fries" which are circular fried potatoes but not very crispy and stuck together. The condiments are limited and so are the ingredients. Yellow Submarine is a mom and pop sandwich shop that has been around since the late 1980s. The guy and lady are very kind people who love to stir up conversation while waiting for your meal. The place is kind of cramped but do offer a sit down if you want to dine in but I didn't see any restrooms if you need one. The other reviews mentioned that this place serves very generous portions and to be honest they didn't lie. I got a regular steak and cheese that seemed enough for two people if you are just moderately hungry. I also got their fresh cut potato chips which were not as crispy as I would have liked but I didn't have much room for the chips anyway after eating that entire sandwich. I do miss getting my teriyaki steak and cheese at another sandwich shop like this one on Ocean Ave that closed its business over a decade ago but I enjoyed the sandwich here as well. 3.7 stars for me. read more

They have every classic sub option under the sun, plus a few veggie options. I wanted a classic Italian sub, and this did not disappoint -- the perfect combo of salty cured meats, melty provolone, toppings including pickles, mustard... YUM. The medium is as big as my head, the large... like a whole newborn baby. My bestie got a classic turkey, my boyfriend got the pepper steak (he's been here many times before) and they were both pleased. This is a family run shop. I can only assume matriarch/grandmother of the family was (wo)manning the grill & add that special nonna love into each creation. Service with a smile, and a sincere "have a good day" when you walk out the door. Yellow Submarine was okay. The best part by far was the bread since they use a really tasty roll that stands out. We ordered a pastrami sandwich and the hand cut potatoes. The sandwich was big but didn't have much pastrami in it which was a letdown. The potatoes were just alright and not crispy, probably because they sat in the bag too long. I asked for the bread to be cored but I don't think they did it. Service was straightforward and quick with no frills. The dining area is pretty small so I wouldn't recommend it for big groups. Ordered a large Turkey avocado sandwich with the works, and boy was this thing large! We knew they were known for their big subs, but I wasn't expecting it to be the size of small baby! Prices are also pretty damn good for what you get, we got a large sandwich and two bags of chips - plenty of food for two very hungry people, and possibly enough for 3 if your appetite isn't so big. All of this came out to under $25 - not many places in the city two people can eat and end up full for under $25. Sandwich took a little while to come out, but it was fresh and warm, and seemed to have been made with love. While I did really enjoy the sandwich, I felt like it could've used just a tad more flavor. I think next time I come I'll try a different meat option and see how it fares. read more
