I am a native Dallasite and I'm ashamed to say that I only recently had my first holiday buffet experience at the Zodiac Room, but it certainly will not be my last! I always LOVE a visit to the og Neiman's downtown and never turn down lunch there, but the holiday buffet is something special. The buffet features a deceptively simple-looking selection of salads and holiday mains. Literally, all of the salads are sooo good! I could have made a meal out of those and the consomme starter. But I had to make room for the main entrées and sides: roast beef, ham, turkey, mac&cheese, dressing...all the goodies! Dessert is served on a cutesy 3-tiered tray with the famous NM chocolate chip cookie! The only negatives were it took us quite a while to be seated and our waiter went MIA for a bit because they were soo busy. Still, nothing that would keep me from adding an NM lunch to my holiday activities going forward! One last thing: I don't think there's a dress code but you should look nice. I was picking up an online order from Neiman Marcus and decided to go upstairs and have lunch at this historic restaurant/store. As soon as I stepped off the elevator on the 6th floor I was greeted warmly by the receptionist. I didn't have a reservation but within 15 minutes she was walking me to my seat. From my server to the beautiful young lady who was bringing out the bread and butter, the service was warm and inviting. She brought me the most amazing chicken broth in a small espresso cup, I secretly wanted to ask for a whole bowl of that broth it was so delicious. I ordered the Ceasar salad, chowder and truffle fries. Very delicious. The receptionist even came over to ask how my service was going and to let me know about their holiday buffet. There is literally a paid garage right across the street for parking...I was there from 12pm-2pm and my parking ticket was $7. If you are shopping within Neiman you can get complimentary valet service, which is right at the front door. Overall, this place is a vibe. Grab your mom and sisters, your girlfriends or even your spouse and go eat here. I'll definitely be back. read more

We chose the Zodiac Room hoping to taste some of the past charm that came with the bankrupted Neiman Marcus downtown building. Reservations are a must, though the younger dining crowd in jeans and Crocs didn't fit against the backdrop of taste and style. This is the consummate white tablecloth/old world experience. First came the complimentary warm chicken broth with a scrumptious puff biscuit served with strawberry butter. The recommended salmon tacos were spot on. My lunch partner had the half soup/half sandwich, also delicious. Too full for dessert though it was tempting. Flawless execution by an iconic downtown landmark. We came on a Saturday to avoid the downtown rush and hope to make it back before it's gone. It seems this place only serves lunch. read more

What can I say? It's the Zodiac Room. Everything that was served was exceptional. The cup of bone broth served with a popover is just amazing. Our table shared a seafood salad and it tasted like it came straight from the ocean. I had the Shrimp & Pea Risotto for my main entree and not a bit was left on my dish after I was finished. A lovely ladies afternoon. It was nice to have the restaurant so quiet as my mom has a tough time hearing so there was her little ambient noise which makes a big difference to her. Outstanding Holiday Buffet! I will make this a new holiday tradition! My friend and I had a reservation weeks in advance. We were seated shortly after checking in and we were a bit early. All staff members were very friendly and on top of everything. I was impressed with the food. It was a unique buffet. Once we were seated we were given popovers and a small type of sipping soup that was wonderful. The buffet has a salad table and then a hot foods table. Each table is a variety of unexpected items in my opinion. Everything was delicious, well prepared and presented well. I was too full to even get all the things I wanted or to go back for seconds. The ambiance was perfect. I only photographed the desserts as you can see and those were an excellent surprise. We had also Ordered cocktails and they were perfection. A splendid restaurant with a wide variety of choices for good value! Loved the complimentary pre-course consommé with fresh popover and strawberry butter! The crab melt with salad was delicious. The salad had a lovely light vinaigrette dressing. Our group also enjoyed the lobster roll and the antipasto Bistro Salad. There was good drink options and we had lovely margaritas with lunch. Our waiter was helpful with our choices and charming to speak with. He gave us other helpful recommendations for dinner! I was served a $20 BURNED bacon cheeseburger, oh yum! Food Review: POPOVER CROISSANT with fruit (strawberry) butter and au jus or beef broth - very soft, flakey croissant, paired well with the fruit butter or you can opt to dip it in the au jus or beef broth. - the Waiter just sit the cup of liquid down without informing if it is dip for bread or expresso to drink, ‍ let alone confirming what the liquid. ZODIAC BURGER - thick beef patty, with cheddar cheese, onions, tomato, garlic. aioli and bacon. the bacon was BURNED to a crisp, it ruined the taste of the entire burger. -what Chef doesn't know how to fry bacon? Seriously! Fries - thin crispy fries, fried to a golden brown. great taste but only because the taste resembles that of McDonalds fries. BROTHERS BOND COCKTAIL- very refreshing whisky punch, with an awesome balance of liquor and mixer Overall, everything was pretty good. However, the 2 stars is due to the BURNED bacon. You get superb service in peaceful surroundings so you can eat a scrumptious meal before or after shopping. I've eaten at Zodiac too many times to remember. My friends and I have been celebrating the start of the holidays here for the last 7 years. We looks forward to their holiday brunch as soon as December begins. A elegant buffet filled with fresh and crisp salads, smoked salmon, dips, prime rib, seasonal treats and so much more. This brunch has been the highlight of our life for so many years- I mean my mouth is just watering thinking of their chicken consume and the popovers, divine- Sadly this year was the pits, every year my tastebuds tingle for something specific, this year I couldn't wait to get my hands on the potato latkes, but what makes them so divine- the sour cream sauce and the apple preserves- this year- they changed them to crispy potatoes- huge letdown. Their were quite a few little A changes- no onion dip for the salmon. A few other things that I've forgotten but even the restaurants wasn't as jazzy for the holidays as it has been. The restaurant itself is always decorated nicely and offers small and large group seating options - but it's recommended to make reservations in advance. Located on the 6th floor of the Neiman Marcus on Main Street, the Zodiac seems to have a lot of old school about. The downtown department store with escalators and elevators, clothing on each floor is really near extinction. Was I in a time warp, maybe, but it is not always better in the present than the past. The dining room is split in half, with tables and booths located on both halves. We were greeted at 11:30 by a courteous hostess and immediately seated at at table. The menu was dropped off, in addition, a QR code listing the specials is on the menu's front corner They also have a box showcasing the "old" Neiman Marcus favorites. Now you might say with all the previous comments, why 5 stars? Well service, food and surpassed my initial expectations. The menu was interesting to say the least, nothing new wave or trending. It was the "touches" the impressed me. The charcuterie board, popover French dip and chicken paillarwere all very good. The server, Heather, I think is her name was terrific. (only been there a few months, used to own her own restaurant). Friendly, timely, and really made us feel welcome. She has a wonderful personality and gave us a lot of fun areas in the city to explore. The zodiac room extras made it a very worthwhile experience. First surprise was the spiced ice tea, cinnamon, orange, infused black tea woke me up perfectly. We also had chicken broth with popovers & strawberry butter. Work lunches are inherently difficult because everyone seems to be on a different diet. You also want a place that's memorable. The Zodiac fits the bill. This review focuses on this experience. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Take the elevator to the 6th floor. What's great about the Zodiac Room is that it is located in the original Neiman Marcus. A true department store with a different departments on each floor, during the holidays Neiman Marcus is beautifully decorated with trees, ornaments, and plenty of festive enhancements. As you exit onto the 6th floor, you'll see the bar for the Zodiac Room and the hostess stand. It's has a feel of classic history. Expect to dine next to Dallas's elite and ladies who lunch. 1 Star. Service - The service is great. Once you're seated a server will bring out the famous Neiman Marcus popovers with strawberry butter. The staff is very attentive and will help you with every request. We had an excellent experience with no issues whatsoever. 1 Star. Food - They have a regular lunch menu, but this review focuses on the holiday lunch buffet. It's a fantastic spread, filled with staples such as prime rib, lamb, turkey, & chicken. But if you're a fan of side dishes like me, you'll find a bounty that will keep your tummy happy well until dinner. My favorite (and my kid's favorite) was their triple mac & cheese. It's topped with bread crumbs that add an extra layer of texture to the creamy cheese. The sweet potatoes, caprese salad, and dressing/stuffing were also items I came back for seconds. You'll also get a plate full of mini bite size desserts. Expect to see favorites like pecan pie, crème brule, and cake pops. It's an excellent spread that is on par or even better than the Four Season's holiday buffet. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. I've visited the holiday on two separate occasions and I can easily see a return visit in the future. It only comes once a year and we had to make our reservations a month in advance, but it was a great family experience that is worth repeating. 1 Star. My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts): 1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm. 1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five-star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point. 2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it's really all about the food. 1 Star - Will I come back? - If I know for a fact I'll return, I'll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return. Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. Do NOT come here if you have a food allergy or severe intolerance. The kitchen staff (including the chef) are dangerously incompetent. I called in advance to ask what oil they use (I am severely soy intolerant) and was told it was an 80/20 canola/EVOO blend and that most their salad dressings used EVOO. When I came in person, it was a buffet, so I asked which foods I could eat. I was told they actually use an 80/20 SOY and EVOO blend and they marinate their meats in it. Wow. Good thing I double checked. Then, they didn't offer to make me anything I could eat and instead made a list of foods that were allegedly "ok" for me to eat. Once I finally got the list, I immediately saw several foods on there that I knew had mayonnaise in them (which almost always had soybean oil). I mentioned this, and they CONFIRMED those foods HAD SOY IN THEM. I then saw that the chef idiotically listed some salads as "ok" and some salad dressings as not ok, so it wasn't even clear what she meant by saying the salad was ok. It turned out that the salad she had listed as ok had a dressing she hadn't listed AT ALL but that used soybean oil. I wound up not being able to eat anything, after being embarrassed by having multiple people interrupt me (during a work lunch event) to pretend they were trying to accommodate me when in fact they were working on giving me food poisoning. They even sent someone to escort me to the buffet - just to ultimately confirm that they had given me the wrong information AGAIN. I would've rather they just told me off the bat that their food was all unsafe and they're incompetent and couldn't possibly make me any food I could eat. What they actually did was incredibly upsetting and scary. It makes me afraid to go to almost any restaurant now. It's insane that they pretend to be a nice restaurant and charge a lot of money. read more

My intern class and I went over to The Zodiac as a celebratory farewell lunch, as a few of us were leaving a week early. We realized from the beginning that the restaurant was really fancy, but the overall experience was ok at best. I ordered a burger because I wasn't really feeling anything else they had on the menu. The burger itself was pretty good, but the fries were meh. Definitely a bit overpriced for what it was. The service was very prompt, but it felt like the staff looked down on us a bit because we asked for separate checks. I understand the struggle of separate checks, especially because we did have a big group, but our server was a bit standoffish about it. Was that really necessary??? We did end up getting our separate checks, but the server's attitude did put me off a little bit. Would recommend going if you want to spend $20 minimum on ok food, there are so many other places downtown that are much more worthwhile going to. read more

Great place for lunch to impress a client, friend, or family. This is a real hole in the wall in the sense that many people work in downtown Dallas for a decade and don't know about it. You get started with some amazing consomme and popovers. It seems people have lost the art of making good popovers but the Zodiac Room brings it back. Paired with strawberry butter - so good. The service is good, especially when you are nice and engage them politely and treat them like humans. Extra popovers just start flowing with smiles :) Just because you eat at a really "pompous" (as an earlier review cited) or pretentious place - does not mean you have to act that way. The food is great. The salmon is amazing. I definitely recommend some salmon and lobster bisque if it is available. The price is not cheap, but I always look at value. To be honest, I would put their plates up against trendier, "fancier" places that charge twice as much or more. Their salmon, or even their burgers, easily plate and taste better than $50 plates. You can get out less than $20 a person if you get burgers. It would be a memorable meal. Spend $26 per plate and get something amazing. Oh, and at the end, don't forget the NM cookies. Lunch after an early movie proved to be a delectable experience at the Zodiac! We were seated immediately upon arrival and our waiter provided a great preview of the menu with wonderful tips as to where to start. Of course we started with the consommé and pop over bread w/ strawberry butter. My wonderful friend had the salmon tacos: Blackened salmon fillet, cilantro, jalapeños, avocado, fresh salsa and corn tortillas with a lime-cabbage salad. Fantastic! I had the Citrus salad- a bed of rosemary and arugula accompanied with mixed citrus sliced of grapefruit and orange, olives, fennel, marcona, almonds, citrus dressing and avocado with Gulf grilled shrimp. I happen to be from the Caribbean and tend to steer towards citrus-filled salads. To my surprise, our wonderful waiter had visited an island in my home country and understood my choice for my meal. What are the odds that you are from a far away land and your waiter knows precisely what you should eat! The salad was amazing and the shrimp with grapefruit, orange and avocado was zesty. The tacos were delicious as my friend pointed out. I had to try the coffee martini and of course, we had strawberry cake. The Zodiac Room is a stylish venue for exceptional cocktails and decent, if not exceptional, food. The service: bustling, quick, and pleasant, though our waiter had some trouble hearing or listening to us. We are vegetarians, and explicitly told him we did not want the complimentary chicken broth, but he brought the consomme regardless. He asked if my boyfriend wanted meat on his grain bowl, he said no, and our meal came out with salmon on it. We couldn't tell whether they brought it out again after remaking it or just took the salmon off and called it good. Cocktails: Tasty! The blackberry bramble was sublime, and the orange lavender sparkle was a lovely non-alcoholic alternative. Complimentary popover and strawberry butter: delightful! Avocado toast: All of its components worked together very well- particularly the lemon- but it needed something extra to push it into the next level. Toagrashi, or something smoky. Grain bowl: My boyfriend thought it tasted good, but lacked seasoning. "It would have tasted better if I had added some meat like they wanted me to," he said. We were pleased, though, to see a non-meat sunflower based chorizo in a non-vegan restaurant. Stone fruit salad: Good, but not very memorable. Tea selection: Very nice! Jardin Bleu was lovely. Desserts: We got two: the coconut cream tart and the eight-layer espresso chocolate cake. If you get the cake, make sure you share it between at least two people. It was rich, sophisticated, and just a lot of very heavy, and tasty, cake. The coconut cream tart was lovely- lots of fresh fruit. Still good if not better than ever. 15 years since I've been here, when I lived across the street and use to pop over for lunch or dinner. Just had lunch and service was exceptional, from the host seating me to my server and wait staff team. I had the lobster salad , not to excited about the tarragon dressing but still delicious. I should just ask for bleu cheese dressing and be done with it. My favorite part is still the complimentary chicken broth and popover with strawberry butter.
