This comes from a Texas boy. This was good BBQ. Damn good BBQ. After a 3 hour ride on the train from Durango to Silverton, the wife announced she had a surprise from me. She had apparently seen an episode of DDD where Guy visited this humble establishment. I wish I had been there when he was there. We only had about 20 minutes due to the train being late. We dashed in, ordered the brisket, pulled pork, and sausage platter. Sides? Coleslaw and mashed taters. As I said, really good BBQ. The coleslaw was a little dry. Very good BBQ! I am very familiar with TX barbecue, as I have extended family there and eat BBQ there often, and this has nothing to envy Texas Barbecue. So I disagree with the previous reviews. I ordered the Small plate of Brisket and Mashed Potatoes. The meat was moist, smoky, flavorful and tender. The sauce a bit spicy and tangy but not overwhelming. The portion was a good value as well. The lady at the counter was very helpful answering questions regarding our order and was very friendly (not always the case in this area). So were the young teenagers who brought the food to the table and bussed it. They had social distancing in place for dine-in service and some outdoor seating. We found that it was strange that we could not find opening hours for them anywhere online. We ate around 6pm and were still sitting at our table at 7pm. We wondered if their opening and closing hours are gaged by foot traffic? It's unclear. As a side note: The town of Silverton as a whole, did try to offer some patio seating to diners to accommodate COVID regulations, but I felt like they could have done a little better job with the set up. Hopefully they maintain the outdoor eating idea even post-pandemic improving on logistics. Hopefully they will forgo ugly traffic barriers of all shapes, colors and size for something a little more appealing and they may want to sweep the dining area a bit to remove the ever present gravel :) read more

It's good to make friends on a road trip. Someone insisted that I should go to Silverton and eat at Thee Pits Again. I love BBQ. What can I say. So while I was road-tripping in Ouray, I headed to Silverton and looked for a pink structure in town. Yup, just like the dude told me. You can't miss the place. It was late in the afternoon. They sold out of the brisket. I settled for the ribs. I can't believe how much food they gave me for a little bite. And the food disappeared quickly. The ribs were falling off the bone. I'm from Texas but I understand that other places have brisket too. I have to add my personal preferences, but the brisket and the meal was great and a a great value, more especially for the area. I've worked on my brisket smoking skills for many years. I would be happy with any cook that came out like the brisket here. The meat was standalone good and I mean it needed no sauce to be good without. The hot sauce I later tried was perfect, as it hit with some heat, then quickly retreated for a smoother finish. There was no smoke ring and I like a little hickory flavor in my brisket. The rub was indiscernible to the point I am not sure they used a rub. I only use salt and pepper like I picked up from Aaron Franklin, so I don't use anything heavy. The rub need not be the primary flavor in brisket. I don't care for sweet cornbread, but this only had a little hint of sweet and that went away. It was awesome! I like cole slaw a little creamier, but this was on point! I'd eat it any day with any BBQ. The potato salad didn't blow my hair back, but it wasn't bad. The fella that delivered our order was neither friendly nor unfriendly, but professional. The food arrived shortly after we were seated. The only negative review I saw was a gimme. "I should have known not to order vegetarian food at a bbq joint..." Right! Next time exercise better judgment. I read the first line about ordering vegetarian bbq and I knew that was a poor decision. I don't go into my garden looking for a steak, but then I listen to that little voice that keeps me from making similar mistakes. I guess my only criticism is they have vegetarian food items on the menu. Then again, that is more a business decision issue than a food item issue. Finally, with this covid-19 scare, there is limited seating. I saw a party of 2 in front of us taking up a table for 8. There were smaller tables open and there were a few couples at large tables as well. Good manners aren't common, but you should try to practice them anyway. We stopped in here on our way back to our cabin because it just smelled so good. Half of main street smelled like good bbq. I had no idea Guy Fieri had been there with DDD and Food Network until we were in the place. The lady behind the counter wasn't particularly friendly or helpful and the place seemed like it needed some basic maintenance but the food was fantastic! The pulled pork sandwiches were great! They didn't put enough BBQ sauce on the sandwiches for our tastes so I'm glad we checked before we left and were able to load up as it's so flavorful it really makes the sandwich shine. Silverton is a tiny town between two ski towns. It's a place people go to explore the outdoors or to ride their OHV's. Or to ride one of the only remaining steam locomotives in the USA. The town is only alive maybe 4-6 months of the year. The original was on that Diners Drive In's and Dives Show. We wanted bbq and it's the only option in the small town. It is very small and very crowded. There's a host/food runner. He talks for everyone to hear him and tells about the food, the show, and how to order. He runs the food and busses the tables too. We got our food pretty quickly. The ribs were good. They fell off the bone which was very good. The brisket was ok but dry. It was no 'Franklin's BBQ'. The potato salad and cole slaw were fresh and homemade and amazing. The baked potato was egh and came with a tiny teaspoon of sour cream. The baked beans were nothing special either. The cornbread seemed like it had potential but was dry and not warm. We ordered a deep fried Twinkie. It's got a funnel cake batter and is served with a scoop of ice cream and whipped cream. It was amazing! I'd give this place a 3.5 to be more specific. read more

If you are a foodie and/or a Diners Drive-ins and Dives fan, then this is a must try! Even if you don't happen to find yourself in the small, adorable, Western-like town of Silverton, you should probably still make the trip up the mountain if you are in the vicinity. We have been eating here once a year for almost as long as you have been at this location. We keep returning because the bbq is good, the service is excellent, and the view breathtaking. They could retitle their vegan "sloppy joe" to make it sound more appetizing--right now it's listed on their menu as "textured protein." Blagh! LOL. If you take the train ride from Silverton to here, you'll quickly realize that there really isn't much to do 9,200 feet above sea level. That being said, you'll probably be hungry and this is the best place to eat lunch at. I had the pulled pork and slaw sandwich and it was very tasty. Unlike many other bbq joints, Three Pitt's Again offers smaller servings for those who are not in the mood to bust a gut. I opted for the light meal option which comes with one meat (I HIGHLY suggest the pulled pork - as originally recommended to me by the employee at the counter - some of the best I've ever had), along with one side (standard fixins available like bbq beans, coleslaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, etc.) and a slice of cornbread with butter (the only thing I was missing was a drizzle of honey!). Considering that this is a restaurant featured on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" and the fact that my family and I are smoked meat snobs, I had high expectations for this local eatery, and was GREATLY disappointed. 1. The staff is not very friendly. They acted inconvenienced, and were very snappy when asked questions about the menu. 2. The brisket was so tough, it tasted like it had been sitting out for days, and then reheated in the microwave. I had to drench it in BBQ sauce just to get it down the hatch. 3. Ribs were average. (I've had better at Texas Roadhouse for a lot less.) 4. Since I absolutely love cornbread, we ordered three. Be prepared to drink a gallon of water with their cornbread; it was as dry as the Sahara with no flavor. 5. Baked beans and potato salad were the only items really delicious, but not worth it for the price. I ate at Thee Pitts Again twice during a weekend in Silverton. I liked it. I thought something in error, which I wanted to mention. I looked at credible sources, and it turns out to be true: your taste buds likely function differently at high altitude. The reason I was curious is I thought, gee, the food here is bland and dry. But I wondered if it might have to do with the location, specifically being 9318 feet above sea level -- especially since I live in New York City, which is not notably high. So I poked around, and, sure enough, this has been established through scientific research, and studies have been replicated. It's not the restaurant, and it's not me. It's being that high. You can add seasoning. Or you can acclimatize. I had pulled pork both times. It came on a tray. I like places such as this, with that informality. I also had mashed potatoes. Those are different, rustic. They aren't bad; they're just not pureed until smooth. The onion rings were great, homemade. They will kill you of course. I also had mac and cheese, a kid's option on the menu. The guy at the counter was commendably honest, that this was just a Kraft box. The service in general was thoughtful and kind. Adjusting for altitude, I want to commend the restaurant. I tried to assess everything else I consumed on the trip. It had the same issue. It was just all less flavorful than expected.
