They stayed friendly, attentive, and kept everything running smoothly. We ordered the one egg, potatoes, and biscuit combo, along with the pancake, potato, and bacon plate. Everything arrived hot and in a very reasonable amount of time. The potatoes were well-seasoned and full of flavor, and the biscuits tasted fresh and homemade. The pancake and bacon rounded out a delicious breakfast. The prices were very fair, the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and they also offer outdoor seating if you want to enjoy the mountain air. If you're visiting on the Durango & Silverton train, I recommend heading there promptly upon arrival, as the restaurants in town fill up quickly and long wait times can consume much of your limited time in Silverton. The café serves breakfast and lunch, opening at 7am, stop serving breakfast at 10:40 a.m. and closing at 2:30 p.m. During my visit, I ordered the Frito Pie, a dish featuring chili topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and Frito corn chips. While it was enjoyable, it lacked the level of spice I had expected from a Southwest Colorado specialty. My son ordered the Philly cheesesteak sandwich and described it as decent. For dessert, I was fortunate to get the last slice of apple pie available, although they had already run out of whipped cream. The interior has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, but seating is limited and there is no air conditioning. Since temperatures reached 82°F during our visit, we opted to sit outside. Service was average, but the food arrived quickly, which was appreciated. One of the biggest advantages of dining here was avoiding the long lines that had formed at other restaurants. If you want a homemade hamburger, this is your place! Literally a burger as if we made it ourselves - thick patty and seasoned to perfection. All veggies were fresh and we loved the side of pinto beans. Waitresses were extremely pleasant, friendly and attentive. We went because our friend who was with us, went here about 10 years ago who recommended it to a friend that went last month. Between the hamburger, Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich, & the BLT, they were all awesome tasting. This was a really cold and tedious start to the day. There was a pretty long wait on a Sunday morning at 8:45 but they won't let you put your name in or give you an estimate for how much longer it might be so we ended up just standing in the cold wondering if we should leave or not for awhile. They also kept asking the two of us and the couple behind us if we would mind sharing a table and seated a group of 4 behind us rather than just seating us at a 4 person table (I could see 2 people at a 4 person table through the door from where I was standing) which made the wait longer. Hidden treasure off the beaten path? (as the cover on the menu says). Or was it the only restaurant open in town? After canvassing the little town of Silverton, we're fairly certain it was the only place open, but a pleasant surprise at that! As soon as we stepped inside we could see it was pretty packed. It's a small place and there were maybe a total of 6 or more tables...one didn't have any chairs perhaps for social distancing. Lucky for us there was an open table by the front window. The menu items looked good but were minimal...kinda wished we had come for breakfast but oh well...maybe next time. I got a BLT and my hubby ordered a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. BLT was well...a BLT. My hubby loved his Philly Cheese Steak...said it was super flavorful. He dug the homemade curly fries...I ordered them as my side and he devoured them. I love me some fries but they were too soft and not crispy for my liking so I took a pass. Overall, it was a decent lunch. Service was great and our waitress was very friendly and professional. This is off-season for the town so it explains why many places were closed. Would love to come back to Kendall Mountain Cafe when things are kicking and the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Train is up and running again next month. Currently, there aren't many options for breakfast in Silverton, so we gave this place a whirl. It's a tiny dining area, but the vibe was relaxed and quiet. Easy to have a conversation with your table. There is outside seating on picnic tables too. Food was pretty good. The potato's had a nice spin. I got the burrito, but without a tortilla, which basically turned into an omelette. I wish the cheese was a bit better quality, but sometimes it's just like that in these small towns. Bottom Line: Super casual and friendly cafe quickly serving comforting food. My husband and I arrived in Silverton via the D&SNG railroad and seeing as how Kendall Mountain Cafe had the best Yelp reviews we made the trek to the end of town in the rain to visit Kendall Mountain Cafe. Breakfast is served until 11am and there are lots of tasty sounding breakfast options but we were there for lunch which had a more limited menu. Lunch options included some sandwiches, a burger, a Frito Pie special and perhaps a soup. I ordered a Reuben sandwich which isn't something I usually eat but I thoroughly enjoyed it! I think Kendall Mountain Cafe has converted me into someone who likes sauerkraut. Kendall Mountain cafe was a Silverton delight!! My family and I were beyond pleased with our entire meals we raved about it the rest of the trip! I ordered the Reuben and it was love at first bite, I wish I could go back to my very first taste because it was phenomenal. It was a masterpiece of a melty sandwich consisting of corned beef, rye bread, sauerkraut, Russian dressing, and Swiss cheese (all homemade). My parents ordered cheeseburgers and my mom was beyond impressed with the pickles! They were the size of half dollars and my mom couldn't believe it! It reminded my parents of the good-ol' days when burgers were made fresh to order. Fresh, homemade curly fries complimented every meal.
