I can't quite figure out how this place doesn't have more stars! We've visited Serious in Ft. Collins and have been thinking about it ever since! We shared big plate and tried every meat. I highly recommend the pulled pork and brisket. Their Mac and cheese is to die for! You can't go wrong with their Texas Taco with pulled pork and cheesy potatoes. The guy cutting the meat was very direct but decent. Not a single smile in the establishment. We ordered our food and went to check out and the cashier not once greeted us, she spoke softly enough I didn't know what she was saying. I go to pay and see a charge of bbq sauce we didn't order ($10) I tell Emma or Emily or whatever her name was and she added a fountain drink. I then told her no, you're adding a sauce we don't have. She removed both and told me the price and not once did she try to apologize or smile. Gonna take a lot of convincing to return. I like happy workers. read more

Good thing is it was Thursday nite leg nite which was the only item served that was WARM. We had the $35 sampler player ther looked great but was cool or barely look warm. Look warm bbq means tuff and a lot of chewing. The ribs looked great but were terrible. Great little bbq spot after hitting the slopes in Durango! We tried the brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and sausage along with a pulled pork baked potato. Fall off the bone ribs were fantastic and top tier bbq. Brisket was moist but I wanted more of a bark flavor to it. The sausage passed the snap test and was juicy and delicious. As for the loaded potato, it was good and stacked to the top with pulled pork, but better with the bbq sauce and pickles. Would recommend pairing with the sweet tea! They had "wings" advertised on their sign outside. We stopped went in and ordered some only to be very disappointed in some mediocre drumsticks. False advertising. Never wanted to go back again. Of the two locations in Durango, this is our favorite. It's right above the river and we would stop when we were rafting as well as when we are just around town. The barbecue is good and decent for the area. Staff is helpful and some are friendly and some do the minimum. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Most of the time, we sit outside where we can look down on the river. The price is slightly more than average for barbecue. The sauces have good flavor and the meat is generally tender and moist. Bottom Line: Just ok barbecue but the restaurant has some good views of the Animas River and there is a miniature golf course out back. We went to Serious Texas BBQ having seen it documented in a YouTube video. The counter where you order feels a bit sterile but there are some nice views of the Animas River from the back of the restaurant. My husband had the brisket sandwich and to try something new I ordered the Texas tacos (brisket, potatoes, onions & jalapeños). We both thought the brisket was dry and although I do like a vinegar based sauce, I didn't feel like Serious Texas BBQ's sauce added enough to improve upon either the moisture level or flavor. I will say that the Texas taco was huge. I ordered two not knowing how big they were but one was certainly enough. The second one would have been good for breakfast with a poached egg on top. There is also a miniature golf course out back which I thought was a pretty cool concept. But by the time we arrived to Serious Texas BBQ it was a bit dark and to damp to play. It is a difficult thing writing Yelp reviews; there are so many things that go into an experience of a restaurant or a county fair, or a roadside attraction, or a retail establishment. There is the community expectation of honesty, juxtaposed with the emotional potion of not wanting to hurt a business owners feelings or profits. Over the years of writing reviews, I've come to realize that all of this is valid. Each of these things, combined with so many other components of fact, truth, and opinion, all blend together for a brief few moments, somewhere near where my life path intersects with these business' life cycles. All that as prologue for my review of this serious Texas barbecue place. Pulling into Durango after putting 8000 miles on my truck during a cross-country road trip to Key West and back from Southern California was, unto itself, full of emotion. Our plan was to stay at a hotel in town for one night, and then head to Mesa Verde for two nights of camping before heading home. Durango is an interesting town, but the particular place where our hotel was located was pretty devoid of any businesses or restaurants. A dilapidated and closed shopping mall was next-door, and with a 26 foot trailer on our truck, I did not much feel like driving around the narrow streets of downtown Durango. Yelp showed us that we were about a half mile walk from this barbecue joint, so we got shoes on the kids, and started our little hike. Lucky for us, we followed a beautiful path along the river, and found our way here. When we entered, the delightful smell of smoky barbecue meat filled our senses, and everyone's hunger increased by an order of magnitude. When we walked up to the order counter and took a look at the menu, everything looked delicious. Prices were reasonable, and everything was pretty much made and ready to go, waiting for us in the steam trays and heated containers. Here's the honesty part: there were lots of flies buzzing around the kitchen. It seems, they too are attracted to the smell of delicious cooked meats. I don't know if it's the easy-going nature of my family, the extreme hunger we were all experiencing, or the more mellow expectations that accompany being on vacation, but a quick scan of the kitchen area showed all the food was covered, a mental rationalization that if we were outside at a barbecue pit I would not have thought twice about those same flies buzzing around, and hearing my grandpa joke "don't worry, if a fly lands on your food, it doesn't eat much"... we ordered up our dinner. I got a double sampler on a tray, a chicken sandwich for the bride, and a couple of sides of mac & cheese and coleslaw. We decided to enjoy our dinner outside, and the patio over the river is nothing short of breathtaking. Definitely warm weather, but very beautiful, and peaceful. Those same little bugs were flying around keeping our arms busy, but it really wasn't a big deal. Big old bottles of barbecue sauce on every table, all the napkins you needed, and bottomless fountain drinks with help-yourself refills made it a great, laid back experience. We truly enjoyed our dinner here, and walked back to our hotel along that same river path with full tummies. I have no idea when I will be back in Durango, but when it happens, two things will occur: I'm going to do some flyfishing for one of those big local brown trout, and I'm going to visit this barbecue place again. Literally the worse BBQ place I have ever been to. The sausage was great and the turkey was juicy but that's about it. The pulled pork was mid but the one that did it for me was the ribs and brisket. I have had well done steak juicer than the ribs and brisket. You have use half of their watery bbq sauce to relief your mouth from drought. My jaw could chew through tree barks now that I've had a good workout from the ribs. The juiciest part of the brisket was the fat. The rest of the brisket felt like eating high grit sand paper. It's my fault for eating Texas BBQ in Colorado. Like the other guy, I'd give it 0 stars if I could. read more

When we walked in, all 3 of the people behind the counter just kind of stood there until one of them said they could help us whenever we were ready. The boy at the counter was taking our order, but then stopped to talk to someone at the end of the transaction and then came back to us to ask if we wanted drinks, it was super weird. The beef brisket didn't have a smoke ring at all, the pulled pork was dry as a bone and the only bbq sauce option is definitely not anything you'd find in a Texas restaurant. Amazingly reasonable prices for great BBQ. My wife had the sausage (too spicy for her taste) but loved the peach cobbler. I had a very good smoked turkey and some incredible pinto beans (cooked with chunks of brisket and jalapeño). Very tasty pecan pie. A winner!!!!! read more

My husband and I are from the south and somewhat BBQ snobs so please keep that in mind. I had mini brisket tacos with slaw and side of cheesy potatoes. My husband had half rack of ribs and same side. Serve your self drinks tea, soft drinks and beer/margaritas. The food wasn't hot enough. The potatoes tasted like they had been sitting for some time. Taste was good but barely warm. Same for meat. Slightly warm but good lean meat. BBQ sauces on tables to spice it up as much as you want. As a note: we came in at 6:30 and they were closing at 7:30 so I will cut them some slack there. Eh, this Texan was not impressed. The sauces are super watery and vinegary. There was only 2 to choose from and neither were good. I got the brisket sandwich and cheesy potatoes...Hubs got the 1/2 lb turkey. Hubs turkey was good, he did not like the sauce either. My brisket was probably 60% fat. I choked down 1/2 the sandwich and brought the rest home to the dog. The staff was friendly. The tea was good, but they need to be taught what Texas Sweet Tea is...because this is not it. No need to cut it 1/2 & 1/2 with the unsweet. The atmosphere is almost identical to 'Rudy's' in Texas, but the food is not up to par. read more

While not a native Texan, I did live in Texas for 7 years. This place nailed their meats! Turkey was flavorful and moist and the pulled pork sandwich was delicious. Cheezy potatoes is the best side as the coleslaw lacked flavor. Sausage has a good kick of spice. You order at the counter and service was fast. The place had a nice very casual ambiance but was hot as it appears they do not have AC or it was broke? Not sure all I know is it was quite warm inside. I ordered a half rack of pork ribs, they were the worst ribs I've ever had in my life, dry and so overcooked, I am amazed they would sell such terrible pork ribs. My grand daughter had a quarter pound of pulled pork and she was not able to finish it due to the dryness and lack of flavor. I will NEVER EAT at this establishment again. My husband and I love BBQ, and while passing through Durango, we were looking for a quick bite. A friend recommended Serious Texas BBQ and I'm so glad they did! We ordered a pound of brisket and ended up getting two meals each out of it. Super affordable and ABSOLUTELY delicious. The meat was tender, flavorful, and honestly some of the best brisket I've had. The BBQ sauce wasn't bad, just a bit watery for my taste, so I'd probably skip it next time. The staff was also very friendly and helpful, which made the whole experience even better.
