The waitress taking down names seemed dazed, related to how to manage. Someone older and more experienced saw us, came over, answered our question about the wait, and immediately sat us. We very much appreciated it. Our waitress was very kind and attentive, checking in on us very often. We ordered the crispy chicken sandwich, the strawberry walnut salad, and the half order of chicken. The salad was fresh and tasted really good. I liked the vinaigrette that was offered. I also really liked the chicken sandwich. It tasted great with the fries after a long day of exploring and hiking. I'd definitely come back. This is the highest rated restaurant in Silverton so we were excited to check it out during our Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad tour. First the good things. Although there was a group of 12 ahead of us, our wait was just 10 mins as they were pretty good about crowd management. The inside decor is super cool with taxidermy animals everywhere. We saw bobcat, mountain lion, mountain sheep, and all kinds of animals that you would expect to live in Colorado. There were super funny signs everywhere (my favorite was the oats one). The disappointment was the food portion size. I ordered a reuben sandwich for $19 which came with a very skinny portion of meat between two small pieces of toast. We barely got maybe 10 fries with it. For $19 I expected the portion size to be a little bigger. Their draft beer were on the smaller size at 12 oz instead of the standard 16oz. Come here to checkout the cool wall decorations and maybe get a drink but skip the food. If a real cowboy walked into this saloon, he would be pretty angry by the portion size and probably start a bar fight! read more

Handlebars Food & Saloon was one of the highlights of our time in Silverton! The restaurant was absolutely packed when we arrived, but we were seated surprisingly fast. From the moment we sat down, the service was impeccable. Multiple staff members checked on us throughout our meal, kept our drinks topped off, and made sure we had everything we needed. Even with how busy they were, we never felt overlooked. We ordered the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and the bacon cheeseburger with fries. I completely forgot to take pictures of our entrées because they looked so good, and before I knew it, there wasn't a single crumb left on either plate! Everything was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. Thankfully, I remembered to snap a picture of dessert before we devoured it!!!! A hot, fresh-baked brownie topped with ice cream that was nothing short of incredible. It was the perfect ending to an amazing meal. The atmosphere is fun and lively, the food is phenomenal, and the service is some of the best we've experienced. The best restaurant in town (for obvious reasons!). This establishment has been in business for ~50 years and has stayed successful for, again, obvious reasons. The staff are ridiculously helpful and attentive, environment is awesome! Walls are covered with things to look at, it's like a free museum! This place was disappointing. Their outside patio is great, shady and beautiful and the service was good. Their food however falls short. We ordered a burger, chicken fried steak and a kids burger. The service was quick and friendly, and the food came out fast. We started with the French onion soup, which was absolutely delicious--rich, flavorful, and definitely a must-try. I had the chicken pot pie, and it was fantastic. The puff pastry was soft and perfectly flaky, and the chicken filling was flavorful and cooked just right. My partner ordered the prime rib, which, unfortunately, was a bit tough and lacked seasoning--probably the only letdown of the meal. They brag about their pot pie but it's just "different" with a big piece of puffed patty on top. Largely cream of chicken vegetable soup mix in a bowl with a pastry on top (and yes, I realized that's largely what a chicken pot pie is however...) Fries were fine, salad had old lettuce and wasn't cold. About the only positive thing I can say is that the beer was wet. There's gotta be other places that have more savory food. I have to be perfectly honest here, we stopped in this restaurant because it was the first one we came upon because I had to use the restroom. (LOL) But.... my personal business aside, it didn't disappoint. We sat at the bar and chatted it up with the bartender. Nice young man, can't remember his name. Hubs instantly ordered the Elk burger and I had the tuna melt. Hubs was delighted with his burger. Nice, rare burger with pepper jack cheese. He didn't even put ketchup on it. My sandwich was ok. The cheese wasn't melted and the fries were a bit soggy, or should I say crisp. I give the restaurant 4 stars for the ambiance. We had a good experience here. I recommend if you are getting off the train, head straight here, as it gets full quickly. I originally wanted a pot pie and green chili soup, but the waitress advised that they are super similar, so I ordered a Rueben and the Green Chili Soup, as I really wanted the soup. However, when my food came out, I received a beef & veggie soup. The waitress said they ran out of the green chili soup I was bummed and would have ordered the pot pie and another side if given the opportunity, but alas. The soup was ok. The Rueben was good. Hubs got the chicken fried chicken dinner. He said his was very good. The decor is worth the visit and the staff are engaging. A previous customer mentioned issues with a service dog. I had my service dog with me and they were very accommodating. Perhaps the previous experience did prompt a change in attitude? The Rocky Mountain oysters were surprisingly good (it's hard to make them good!) I've eaten lots of Rocky Mountain oysters and these were up there with some of the best. We drove into this cute town and smelled amazing food. We found it was coming straight from "the mustache". The Rainbow Trout with mashed potatoes and gravy was delicious! My husband had the Ribeye and it was great! We both had one of the freshest salads ever with delicious homemade dressing! They have a full bar. We were seated right away but the place was packed - you literally felt like you are eating on top of one another, the tables are so close. We also sat in a heavily trafficked area on a corner by the bar that workers were constantly bumping into my chair. I'm socked I didn't end up with food or a drink in my lap. The decor was fun - but the tightness was more problematic. We ordered two kids meal items, a chef salad, and the prime rib French dip sandwich. The salad was the largest dish - the other three, for the price paid the portions are small. Unfortunately, the French Dip was highly not recommended. Three of us tried it and all agreed - the meat was so dry/overcooked, it wasn't edible. Service wasn't what I would say was quick, but the staff was friendly. We stopped here to get a bite to eat after taking the Silverton Durango train ride from Durango. The food is amazing. I had the handlebar burger and husband had the buffalo burger, they were both really delicious. The service was excellent by Rocky at the bar who also went out of her way to find me a Plug for my phone so I can get a little more battery life out of it to take more pictures on the train. In this tiny mining town so historic, it's tucked away in the San Juan Mountains so far from everything. Whereas you know you WILL NOT find a plush restaurant in this rugged railroad town, we definitely wanted some "decent" food to satisfy our hunger. Upon research, we saw that this restaurant had decent reviews left by others; it at least looked a bit promising. We knew we weren't dining in; it was a quick to-go so we could take it back to our nearby hotel room. Upon entering, a young man at the reception was friendly (let's start with this positive note!!) Once we had told him it would be a to-go, he said to just walk up to the bar and place our order there. The lady who was in charge of the bar was also friendly (another positive thing!) We definitely wanted a salad with something else. We picked the salad that has/had tomato stuffed with tuna, the soup of the day (creamy cheddar or something; a cup of it) and the potato skins. The wait time to get our food was decent where we waited no more than 20 minutes. Not bad.... Let's get into the Bad/Ugly, shall we (LOL)? Once back in our hotel room, we opened the container one at a time. We were pretty happy with the Potato Skins. People say you can't really go wrong with (any) potatoes. There were four large pieces of the potatoes in a large container. A good amount of melted cheese was on each piece. The amount of salt? Checked!! The soup was creamy with a good mount of cheese in it (very melty.) It sure wasn't impressive in any way but not bad either. When we finally opened the container of the salad, we could immediately tell that everything in it was OLD. The lettuce was mushy with some brown. The tuna salad was dry. When we dug into it to eat the tomato piece underneath the tuna, we could tell that they used a very old tomato to make the dish (the only way to eat the tomato was to dip it in the ranch dressing that came with the Potato Skins; good thing we didn't use it for the potatoes. Otherwise, we would have eaten it tasting the gross oldness of the tomato; I mean it was that bad.) The chopped-up carrot didn't taste fresh either. This was by far the worst salad we have ever had is the best way to describe how nasty the salad was. We ended up thanking the Potato Skins for being the only decent dish out of all three. We were saved by it is an understatement. We were in town for the beautiful Ice Lake for one night. Even if we are to come back for another hike in this area, we now know that we should skip this restaurant at all costs (unless we want the Potato Skins. But I highly doubt that.) read more

This is one of our favorite spots to stop at when visiting Silverton. We often visit during our SxS rides and walk to town for lunch. Staff members are always friendly and quick to fill any requests. Prices are reasonable given the portion sizes. Upstairs, it can get warm in the summer, but they have fans to help with circulation. There are lots of interesting wall art to look at and start conversations about. Local taps are limited, but there are some commercial options as well. We always bring our family and friends here because it's a nice atmosphere and many food options to choose from. read more

We have eaten here many times over the years and always thought it was such a cool spot--enough that we decided to bring our out-of-state family this time. Unfortunately, when we arrived with our service dog, we were denied entry. The woman outside seating guests was hands-down the rudest person I've ever encountered. She made our family stand out in the blazing sun, which is especially difficult for someone with a disability, and then told us we weren't allowed in the restaurant--at the bar--because "someone might trip over the service dog." Not only is that reasoning unacceptable, it's a blatant violation of ADA protections. I will be reporting this incident and making sure other locals and visitors are aware. As a long-time resident who has supported this place for years, this behavior is disgraceful. Owners and managers need to be aware of staff at the door who treat people with disabilities and their service animals with such hostility. I will not return, and I will be sharing this experience publicly to ensure others know how this establishment treats its guests. read more

Handlebars was one of the recommendations of our server on the narrow-gauge train from Durango. We were very glad we went there for lunch. The ambiance reminded us of what it must have been like in the early days of this mining town - very rustic, rough, and yet warm and fun. When we arrived, there was a bit of a line so we decided to grab two empty seats at the bar. The bartender/manager, Rocky, was great. She was a hard worker, but very friendly and helpful. The owner of the bar, Ken Boden, came over to greet us as well. He has owned the restaurant since it opened in 1989. Quite a character and we enjoyed talking with him. The food was excellent. We stopped here for lunch and cocktails. The ambience is fun and touristy but it's exactly what you want when you go to Silverton. The drinks were good and the food was amazing. The bartender took care of us and was super attentive. They were appear to close for the season which is sad for the winter tourist. I believe they close at the end of September and open back up in May. I'm glad we were able to stop by and grab a cocktail and a bite to eat. I got the Prime Rib French Dip which was delicious! There are only a few places for dinner in Silverton and this one had the most selection so we went for it. Host was a young guy who didn't say hello, welcome or smile. No biggie. Server was a very nice lady, pleasant and attentive. Asked which wine was most popular - Malbec. I always ask because I've had too many glasses of wine from bottles that have been open for several days. It tasted like it had been on the shelf of a few days, not fresh, but OK. One of us had chicken pot pie - "just OK" from someone who always thinks everything is great when it's just OK. I had the "highly recommended" grilled bacon, avocado and tomato sandwich. It was not good. Avocado must be frozen, tomato no taste and seemed to have one piece of bacon split between 2 very small sandwich halves. Cost = $16! The two side salads were good though as was the homemade blue cheese dressing. I ended up with a stomach ache - not sure from what. We won't return. Again, our server was very nice.
