When I contacted THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE CAKE, I did so solely on the basis of the beautiful work I had seen on Instagram. You see, I live in Los Angeles, CA and have never visited this location or even tasted a piece of cake. Therefore, my reference was the excellent work displayed on the website, flavor profiles and Instagram posts. I pre-paid my order in full and did a phone consultation to discuss what i wanted for my 50th birthday celebration. My birthday is this upcoming September and I have been planning it since March, a family celebration in the NYC area. Due to a series of unfortunate events surrounding the venue I have chosen, and a situation that has escalated beyond my control, my venue has notified me that they are cancelling my party. As one can imagine the impact something like this can have, is tremendous. Not only am I not able to find another venue to accommodate my party, with this late notice and with the same budget, my family and I have already spent thousands in airline tickets to travel (hotels and car rentals have been cancelled). I am able to provide supporting documentation from Air B&B, the venue company I was using, and why they have cancelled my 3 day weekend event. it's very difficult to re-book all of this, given the logistics involved and location I had chosen close to an airport. How does this apply to this company? They have a strict no-refund policy and force you into keeping a credit with their store for a future date or forfeit your entire purchase amount if not cancelled on time. I have cancelled on-time, but I will not be using such credit nor am I interested in having any other random products shipped to me on a "just because" occasion; yet this is what I am forced into. As someone who has worked in the customer service industry for over 25 years, I find myself having to make executive decisions, having to be compassionate and flexible on a case by case basis, and trusting a client's given situation. Nothing is so black and white, especially if you OWN the company and are in the decision making process. I also understand that one exception made, can open up a can of worms for other clientele, expecting the same. However, these are risks one takes in good business practices and building relations. I went on "blind faith", with no reference from family or friends and placed this order, trusting the job was delivered. I also paid it full because I trusted the company for my venue was secure. The same good faith should be used in this situation, where it is a problem with no resolution and not anything I can control. I've emailed Laury and requested that my $385.00 be used towards a charitable contribution for the hurting people in Venezuela, raising food banks throughout the city. The response I received, is a very well executed, professional, and rehearsed, canned apology. Every vendor I was working with has understood my situation and requested I send them the documents and details I've been sent. My caterer for example, has already worked with me for months, choosing a menu and creating my event. They have obviously consulted with me and DONE work and a non-refundable deposit is completely understandable and reasonable. But what work has anyone done, besides a phone consultation, for a cake due September 15th at 12:00P? I live in Los Angeles but work for a New York based organization that serves the world. My clients constantly ask me for suggestions on many things, as I too handle events. I will make sure I continue to offer my unbiased expertise and experiences. But when it comes to choosing a confectioner, I will also share this very bad experience, that's left a very bad taste in my mouth. This company gets 1 star because YELP requires a rating. Otherwise, I'd give ZERO stars for a company, whose product I have never used and refuses to see and appreciate extenuating circumstances. read more

The order was placed online- the first step was to complete their online inquiry form and then there were a few emails back and forth but the response time was very fast and I was so relieved that I didn't have to go do it in-person (an hour away from where I live). I ended up needing the order hours before the initial pick-up time and they were able to accommodate that as well. Our guests loved the cake (best cake my sister has ever had!) and the cupcakes. I've placed two orders with There Should Always Be Cake; one which consisted of a cake smash cake, and a 1st-birthday cake order that included three cakes. I cannot say enough amazing things about these ladies and how dedicated they are to meeting and exceeding every expectation imaginable for their clients. My orders were in no way simple...I'm in no way simple, LOL! We worked together for months to get it right, and I emailed them so many times with different questions, thoughts, ideas and I changed my mind about 80 times during the process! Each and every time, they were quickly responsive, super accommodating and beyond helpful. It was an experience where I sensed their excitement about my project to be as equally eager as I was, in wanting to see it come to life! Dominican bakeries themselves are tricky. As a Dominican-American person myself, I often find that more often than not, you can find a delicious Dominican cake in NYC but usually they will lack in the artistry/creative/visual department. And, if they are beautiful, they lack in the flavor department. So, usually, you'll end up sacrificing the Dominican cake for a standard beautiful American fondant cake (if what you're interested is in visuals) and you risk sacrificing taste and flavor. This is exactly what happened to me a year ago, before I learned about There Should Always Be Cake; at the time when my friends were planning my baby shower. I told them I wanted a beautiful cake, and they got me a cake from a very well know bakeshop in Brooklyn that has heavy social presence, and a go-to for many celebrities, but that cake was so dry and disgusting in flavor. Not to mention that the artistic work of the cake itself was in no way as clean and detailed either. It simply left so much more to be desired. The cakes from There Should Always Be Cake are FRESH, insanely moist, not overpowering or too sweet, and rich in flavor. Everyone who tasted our cakes, even the most discriminating Dominicans in my family, were impressed! Lastly, tastes aside - I have never in my life see how meticulously detailed, clean, creative, precise and beautiful a cake can be! These girls literally turn their sugar, flour and eggs into edible works of art! I ordered two cakes back in March for me and my daughter's birthdays. My daughters cake was beautiful although much smaller than I thought. It was delicious. However their customer SUCKS. THEYRE VERY STANDOFFISH AND SEEM TO ONLY BE NICE TO LATINO PEOPLE. A week later, I went back for my cake and it was sliding, the cashier yells, pick up the cake! She did not come around and open the door for me, which would've been the RIGHT thing to do. Lastly, I DM'd them on Instagram about uber eats because a lot of people were saying they couldn't find them. Finally after a few days, I got a half way decent response. Fast forward to now 8 months later, I placed an order of cupcakes for my boyfriend because he LOVES them. I go to their Instagram and it doesn't pop up. They've blocked me for asking simple questions. Had I known this, i would not have given them my money. I don't recommend these people, and will be reporting them. To anyone considering this cake shop I want to share my story on Yelp because this is where I found the shop orginally: I had a horrible experience with this place. I placed an order for a custom cake and paid entire balance a month before the event. Receptionist says everything is all set just come in after 1pm to pick up the cake.The day of, I call to let them know I'm on my way. They say they don't have a cake order under my name and the call mysteriously gets disconnected. I call back, the owner asks me to describe the cake. She then says I apologize but we don't have your cake, a receptionist they hired messed up all these orders and they fired her.( if you had a receptionist that messed up orders shouldn't you double check all your orders to make sure you fixed what she messed up?) Anyhow, my order was amongst those, she said we can make a cake for you but it won't be the flavors you ordered. I requested a full refund she said absolutely! and said she can make a vanilla cake instead and that it'll be ready in 25 minutes. 2 hours later she has the cake ready and says she will not give me a refund because she finished the cake regardless of the mistakes they made and if I want a full refund and I quote "I will cancel your order and you can go elsewhere for a cake." After having agreed to give me the refund having me wait 2 hours instead of 25 minutes on top of the cake mishap the attitude this "business owner" had was absolutely unacceptable. After I questioned her about the original offer she said okay I can give you a credit of $50 to come back another time. That was another slap in the face to think I would ever come back. After i said I will never order there again she said fine I will give you back the $50 for the flavor change as if it was that simple they completely lost my order threw it together that day and called it a flavor change. Five minutes later I get a call from the receptionist that the owner said she fired calling to apologize for the mistake. And lastly, when we're driving back we realize they did not secure the buttercream cake in the box so when we get home one side is completely ruined. Ordered for the first time after seeing The whole insta worthy cake pics! So the pros. Their cakes live sup to the hype of being just as beautiful in person as in pictures. Not only beautiful but cake flavor and filling it self was soooo yummy. So for the cons, it was extremely difficult working with them, the process was like pulling teeth ordering with them. First we were told that the design can be done then were told it can't be done because materials need to be ordered. (Just to change buttercream color and add specific colors to cake in what ever form they can offer) Then we're told it's "what ever color flowers we have is what your going to get". Not only with the design even with the cake filling was the same fight. And this is their ready to purchase to cakes that they have advertised and we inquired about 2 weeks in advance. Also another down fall was the drip that the used for the cake. It has an absolutely horrible taste. It seems like they added too much shortening to thin out the chocolate before doing the drip. So all you taste is shortening and it leaves back a waxy type residue in your month. Not pleasant at all! So would I re order... yes under the condition that their custom service is a bit more pleasant the next time I try to reach out and I won't be asking for a drip on my cake again! read more

I ordered the Dominican cake variety cupcakes and tropical macarons via Uber eats. Everything arrived promptly and looked beautiful, I was really excited to share these baked goods at a dinner party. Unfortunately, I found myself disappointed when I/we tasted everything. Some of the cupcakes had a "refrigerator" aftertaste, and the frosting was not Dominican cake frosting and tasted too much like butter (not enough sugar). Most people were unable to finish the frosting. The macarons were very pretty, but we had no idea what the supposed different flavors were. I hope to try this bakery again so that it can change my mind and review. I want to like them, they're very good at producing attractive baked goods, but flavor is more important to me. read more
