Everything about this company is 100% customer service. Nevic came out took his time explaining everything, getting a quote and answered a few more questions. The Crew was A+. We reviewed the work to be done. Their clean-up of debris etc. far exceeded other larger commercial companies we've used in the past. We reviewed the work completed they answered some questions and passed on some tree wisdoms for care moving forward. Most professional company I met yet. The crew is their own, not just a subbed-out contractor. read more

They just completed a job on my neighbors property. I can't comment on that. I can comment on them parking in front of my house, walking through garden beds, killing small succulents, and then denying they did anything. I watched them through the window of my house. If you hire them make sure they park somewhere other than in front of your house or they'll make a mess of your property. read more

I own lots of rentals so I've dealt with literally dozens of contractors over 30 years, and I've never met a bigger jerk than Nevic. He's extremely slow, rarely returns messages, and argued with me repeatedly about the terms (contrary to what we agreed to in writing). It took him months to do the work, and he complained about it all the way through. You want one person to evaluate what needs to be done, and someone ELSE to do it. If you rely on a contractor to do both they could suggest work you don't need, or omit important work so they can give you a lower bid than their competitors. That's why you have an inspection when you buy a house, and the inspector can't get hired by you to fix any problems s/he finds. It's also why when buying a used car, you get a private mechanic to check it out. Once a car dealership bragged about their gazillion-point inspection but the mechanic I hired found multiple problems. So I wanted one arborist to write up a spec of the work and another arborist to do it. I called Nevic to hire him for the spec, but he criticized my approach, stopping just short of calling it stupid. He said I could trust any of the good arborists in town, so the spec/work separation was unnecessary. He said he'd take the spec job for $500, but repeatedly emphasized how wrong I was to go that route, and how he was doing me "a big fat favor" by taking the job. He insisted I get bids only from his list of arborists whom he said would do a good job, and said I had to tell them that separating the spec and the work was my idea, not his, since he was so embarrassed by it. Once he checked the trees, I texted, "I forgot to ask, did you expect to be able to send the spec report today?" He replied with one word: "Nope." I later got the report, solicited bids, hired an arborist, they did the work, then Nevic went by to check it. He called and told me that they missed several things. This was proof that I was right to separate the spec from the work, and that I couldn't trust Nevic that any arborist he recommended would do the work w/no problems, but of course he didn't admit to this. Anyway, Nevic was to contact the arborist to go over the deficiencies. 4/11/21: I texted asking for the status. He replied that he thought they'd fixed the problems and he'd go check. Over 3 months later, I'm still waiting on that check. 4/30: I texted asking if he'd been able to check the work yet. No reply. 5/11: I texted again. He replied "Planning to go buy there today." He didn't. 5/21: I texted, asking, "Any news?" No reply. 6/18: I texted, saying that the arborist is eager to get paid (since that requires Nevic's sign-off), and asked about the the reinspection. He replied, "I never saw the proposal they gave you so I have no idea about the root coller [sic] work." (1)) Nevic didn't say whether he'd actually re-inspected, and given that he didn't say, it seems he didn't. (2) I pointed out by text, Nevic's job was to see if the work matched his spec, not the other arbortist's bid. Nevic's reply: "What you need to look at is what they actually submitted to you on their letterhead." As I replied, of *course* they submitted their quote on their letterhead, and in any event, it's irrelevant, since Nevic's job was to evaluate the work to his own spec. No reply. 7/1: I texted, asking if he approved the work? No reply. 7/5: I texted, asking again. His response: "You are on my very busy list of people to check in on. Have you asked [the arborist] if they did [the work]?" I replied, "They said they did, just waiting for your sign-off." He replied, "Okay, I'll try tomorrow. This is the last time I'm going to do this sort of thing." Then crickets. 7/14: I texted asking when he could inspect. Two days later he replied, "Late next week...You should really just pay those guys, they have done what they were supposed to do." I replied, "If you know that they did the work according to your spec, then that would mean that you already inspected again, so did you? If you didn't, then how do you know that the work complies with the spec?" Again, crickets. 7/28: He texted me, "On my way over now." Later he called but I missed his call, so I texted my apologies and said I'm available, or text is fine. No reply. 7/29: I texted that I'm eager to hear the results of the inspection. 8/2: He called & said that the root work wasn't done properly. This of course contradicts that they'd "done what they were supposed to do." I pointed out that the bad work was precisely why I wanted a third party to check it, of course he ignored that. Then he said "I'm sorry..." and I perked up, thinking he was about to actually apologize for dropping the ball on communication and followup so repeatedly, as I hadn't thought that apologizing was in his vocabulary. Instead, he said, "I'm sorry [that other company] didn't do the work properly." On our final call, he again trotted out "I don't know what was on the other arborist's bid." (groan) read more

Disclosure: this company did not service my house for trees but..... They saved my cat and that's all that matters. A dog scared my car up, this very tall straight tree (50 +). Fire department came by, couldn't do anything. Called 14 other tree places, they couldn't do anything. 4.5 hrs went by as poor Willie screamed and howled at the top of a giant tree, unable to get down.... They might be Monkeys to the rescue. I live next door to a tree that Nevik "fixed" by putting some sort of crazy sling on it in 2011. He totally hoodwink the owners into letting him "save the tree" instead of removing it, like they asked. One year later, half of it broke off and ruined the roof of my brand new studio. This morning, another giant chunk of that same #$&@! tree fell on my garage roof. I couldn't despise that arrogant jerk more. Do not use this business or you'll likely regret it. read more

These guys were not a great fit for my tree care needs. I wanted the branches of my trees trimmed back to why some more light in the backyard. I was told that would be pointless because the branches would just grow back. Although true, by that logic, I ought not mow the lawn either. Perhaps this "needless" tree trimming is detrimental to the health of the tree long term but it seems to be a standard enough practice as no other tree trimming company I called had any objections. I felt that these guys veered a too much on the side of "what's good for a tree fifty years from now" and too little on the side of "what is a person who works for their money willing to pay for today". I was told to keep my oak tree roots constantly wet if I'm worried about changes in root swelling. While true, this isn't a practical idea as it's literally illegal to run my sprinklers more than once a week, and it's costly. I think what he meant to say is "you probably shouldn't worry about the changes in swelling". I was charged for the consultation which I found more funny than useful. I asked tonhave the limbs trimmed back to give more light to my back yard and landscaping. Instead, he recommended I rip up all my landscaping to give the trunks of my trees room to breath because 50 years from now it would make the trees happier. That's cool and all, but my trees have been growing just fine for the first 12 years of their lives. Personally, I'd rather have trees that are just fine and a lawn for 50 years than tree that are elated 50 years from now and no lawn or landscaping in the meantime. I went to Capitol Tree Trimming and they were much more practical, and focused on the needs of the human who lives amongst the trees and bears the wallet. They did a very nice job. Both my trees and landscaping are doing just fine thus far. I might recommend They Might Be Monkeys to folks who have bigger yards and lots of big trees like an orchard or a park. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE trees, and I'm willing to pay to keep them healthy. I just think that it maybe makes more sense to get the highly technical focus of There Might Be Monkeys on a property with multiple large trees where perhaps the owner could enjoy the benefits more fully. They weren't a good fit for my small yard. read more

They blocked my driveway and I asked them politely to pull up so I could get out. They pulled up a couple feet, still partially blocking my driveway even though they had at least 20 feet of room they could've used. They unloaded all their equipment in my yard even though they were working next door. And left a mess in the street. Just passive aggressive arrogance. read more

They iphone map of their address is a residential home that does seem to have anyone living there, the address on their invoice is mail only and they do not want anyone to drop the check off, there phone is always busy because I think there is only 1 office lady, and of course you can contact them by email. They charge 3% processing fee for credit card or any sort of online payment, every other service company I have worked with on this site has it as a part of their price. The service it self was mediocre and their price is definitely at the high side. Probably not going to use them again. read more

I really wanted to like this place because of the name, but it didn't work out. I was apprehensive because they charge $85 just to come out. Most other tree companies don't charge for an estimate. But I was willing to take a chance. I called and spoke to Larissa and scheduled an appointment two weeks out. She didn't know if her arborist would make it or not and said she would call to let me know if he would be there and confirm the appointment. She never called. So I emailed her a few days later asking if the guy could in fact make it that Saturday @ 11am. She emailed back and said yes. I asked her to have her arborist call me when he was was on the way so I could make sure I was there and ready. Unfortunately, it rained that weekend. Nothing too bad, but scattered showers that went from a drizzle to a light and steady rain. 10:45 rolls around and I haven't heard from anyone, so I'm wondering if the guy is still coming. I call, but no one answers so I leave a message. A few minutes later the guy calls me back and says he can't work in the rain. He literally said he would be willing to go hiking, but couldn't come out to my property. Can't see something or other. Here's my question to TMBM. Is this tree dead? Yes or No? If Yes, how much will it cost to cut it down? Pretty simple and plus I just waited 2 weeks for this appointment. So the guy says Larissa will call me back the next day and reschedule the appointment. It's been 2 weeks and no one has called me back. Business must be great. If they would have showed up I'd have loved to use them for the 75-100 trees, most of which are 20ft +, on my property. Especially because they're name is cool and I was a fan of They Might Be Giants in high school. Oh well, on to the next tree company. read more

Today Nevic called since he could come over early! He introduced himself and gave me a biz card. He's polite, answered my questions and gave me some answers about what's "wrong" with my evergreen trees. I planted trees that weren't the best choice for Texas but I was desperate when a highway was going in behind my house, I needed fast growing evergreens. Nevic gave me some good choices for evergreens for privacy (and for Texas). I have yet to have the any work done since we are still in the estimate stage. I will add more if they do the work. The following is more a review of a couple reviews I read.... As for a couple of the reviews I saw from just a couple people..... Why shouldn't they charge for their time (to come out to look at the trees)? Do you work for free? I don't. Not to mention, Nevic went to school for what he does and you should pay for his advise/expertise, he paid for the education......... They credit back eval fees when work is done anyway. Or would you rather he drive around wasting his time, giving quotes to people that think they know better for the trees and don't take an experts advice. And yes, I want to know what to do for the trees for long term health. Isn't that why you plant trees around your house so they will improve your property, provide privacy and beauty to your surroundings? That's why I did it, I want my investment to live,plus I'm kinda attached to my trees.If you want to chop up your trees to suite what you think looks good, best wishes to you and your trees, mostly the tress.. go ahead, lop off some limbs so your stupid grass can grow. read more

I have several large live oaks and a smattering of smaller trees. I knew that my trees needed to be trimmed, so I interviewed several arborists. None of them were as thorough in reviewing all of the trees on my property as Nevic. Most simply looked at my yard and essentially said "Yup, your trees need trimming, here's the price". Nevic, the owner, went over each tree with me in a very thorough manner. We discussed what trimming was necessary tree by tree. Nevic also recommended clearing the soil away from the base of most of my trees as the root collar was covered, possibly leading to the bark rotting and early demise of the tree. When the crew arrived to do the work, the foreman introduced himself and the rest of the crew to me. Prior to starting work the foreman and I reviewed each tree and verified that the work to be done was what I had agreed to with Nevic.When the live oaks were trimmed, each cut was sprayed with paint to prevent oak wilt. The crew was courteous, hard working and left the yard very clean. Excellent job, good people. read more

I have had them out twice , once to prune the overgrown and improperly maintained trees we inherited when we bought our house (from the owner of another well known tree service) and again to remove a dying tree. Nevic knows his stuff and his crews go above and beyond in every way. They did an amazing job and left the yard looking as good as when they got here. Your trees, especially during a historic drought, are not the place to try and go cheap. When you consider what a fully grown, healthy tree is worth to your home value it makes sense to pay for the best and this company is worth every penny. read more

We had a 5-person crew from They Might Be Monkeys at our place for the day. They did great work. I was very impressed. The job was a little tricky because a tree needed come out that had grown into the fence over decades and was leaning over our shed. No problem for They Might Be Monkeys. They also reduced the crowns on three larger trees by 20 - 25% each. Somehow they did this without disturbing our landscaping. They pruned several trees that we planted; Nevic (the 2011Arborist of the year in TX) personally pruned the more challenging of these. He also had his crew remove some dead branches on our neighbor's tree that extended over our yard, which was not part of the original scope of work but needed to be done. While I've had other tree work done that cost less, I would rather pay more to have tree work done properly and safely. read more

Had a great experience with They Might Be Monkeys. I had a suspect tree in my front yard I was worried was dead. Larissa made it very easy to schedule an appointment asap, and forwarded my photos of the tree to have the arborists take a look at it before coming out. Nevic arrived on schedule, and spent ample time not only examining the one tree, but all others on my property, explaining species, care, and what services (and was very specific with detail) he would recommend, whether it was them that did the services, or another company. He's very knowledgeable, answered all questions I had about trees and their care, and made recommendations about the different kinds of trees I could plant which would work well with my current setup. All in all, i'd say the consult fee ($85) was worth having someone with the experience come out to make a good judgement on what actions needed to be taken. I was also told the consult fee can be applied toward their services, should you choose to hire them. They put the health of your trees first, rather than selling you more service. I admired them for saving birds nests and suggesting that I just let the tree rot for the benefit of the birds. I have consulted with Nevic for tree trimming as well as for pre-construction advice. I have also used their team for trimming and uncovering the root-ball. The prices have been reasonable, with good, clear estimates and promptly. They send out a team large enough to do all of the work in one day. They clean up after themselves. read more

Oh my! What a great job they did. Wonderful crew! They were professional, polite and not scary looking. They took appropriate safety measures for both themselves and our property. We had a very large Oak tree that died and several other issues that they took care of. They also helped us with steps to make sure the rest of our trees stayed healthy. I have five trees in my yard that needed trimming. Chris came out and listened to my concerns, figured out what needed to be done, and made a couple of good suggestions. The estimate was pretty high, but I thought first-class was worth it. Chris and crew showed up right on time and got to work, and took a little longer than they'd estimated, but they honored their original estimate. Because TMBM worked on my property before, I asked them to send their representative over to give me a quote on some work I required. As he and I walked around and discussed my wishes, I found him contrary and vague about how the work would be done. I then found him ill informed (he claimed that Juniperus, aka "cedar," is not a water-intensive or very thirsty plant genus). He then suggested that we could establish a maintenance contract of sorts, which, by that time, was the farthest thing from my mind. When I received a quote from his office for the original work I requested, it higher than anticipated. I will not hire TMBM. read more

I highly recommend They Might be Monkeys and plan to continue to use them on an annual basis. I live on a 3+ acre property that is covered in trees, both native and large container grown that we had installed a few years ago. I hired them to do "everything" that needed to be done, and given the scope of the project they had a full 5-man crew out here for 8 full days. That amount of time and work certainly leaves a lot of room for me to have some kind of minor complaint, but I can honestly say that it was worth every dollar and the job was done perfectly. Nevic, the owner, as well as all of the guys out here working were friendly, hard working, and kept the yard clean at the end of each day. I gained a new respect for arborists...once the work was done their skill was apparent. They used an air spade to clear the dirt off of trees that had been planted too deep, cut off girdling roots that existed in many of our container-planted trees, and it was obvious that part of their skill was not in cutting off limbs, but knowing which ones to cut and which ones not to cut. Whether one of our native groves of trees or our more formal areas, there wasn't one cut that didn't make sense to me. I was concerned prior to using them that the trees may become overcut or too bare, but that isn't the case at all. They look better than ever and still look natural and full. One of my best friends is a great arborist in Dallas and he recommended Nevic and They Might be Monkeys as the best guys in Austin, which is the primary reason I tried them out versus someone else. I just texted him prior to writing this review about what a great job they did and to thank him for the recommendation. My friend texted back, "Glad to hear it. There are a lot of hacks out there. We clean their messes up quite a bit. People who use them [the hacks] learn the hard way, cost themselves more money in the long run and set themselves back years in the development of their trees." In short, if you're going to spend the money on an arborist, don't try to save money and end up hiring a hack! They Might be Monkeys easily gets an A+ for my job. read more

They Might Be Monkeys is a bit on the unusual side. Not weird, but not your run-of-the-mill Tree Care service either. These guys are professional, on-time and really entertaining to watch. This guy Nevic runs the outfit and on our first meeting I was struck by his knowledge and scincerity. I wanted him to pick off all the ball moss in the few trees I had left standing since our last ice storm here in town over the winter. He told me it wasn't necessary and that I'd just be paying for work I didn't need. Wow. I'm not used to that type of honesty. He told me when the best times to prune were. It wasn't the right time at that point, but he did remove some dead wood that could have fallen on me or my family. Really cool. If you need tree work done check these guys out for sure. read more

And indeed they are. At least, I am quite sure that Nevic is easily as familiar with the requirements of healthy trees as another species that might live in them! I was hesitant to pay the consultant fee, but did I ever get my money's worth. Not only did Nevic diagnose my tree's leaf drop causes, he told me in detail the steps to follow to ensure its complete recovery. Then, we walked my property, and he gave me tips about how to better care for my other trees, as well as advice to deal with problems caused by neighbors' trees which overhang my property. I followed his recommendations, and within one week, my sick tree stopped dying and began putting on new dark green leaves. I used another tree company two years ago, paid them $300 for shoddy work, so I really appreciated that Nevic was willing to help me save money by doing the work myself. The name alone should make you hire these guys! Highly recommended. This crew of men pruned my multiple mature trees and dozens of shrubs all in a days time and left me with a huge pile of mulch I happily applied later. They did so much more than I expected--the price was very fair considering the huge amount of work they did. One of the men actually set up some statuary I had lying in a garden bed, without being asked and totally outside of his realm of responsibility. I do so appreciate people going out of their way to please. Very professional crew, on time, professional correct cuts, and inexpensive for the work performed. My yard looks great! However, he made a point of examining ALL our trees and making recommendations for each, and he even included some light pruning along the way. Nevic clearly knows his trees and offered us a lot of sound advice. We did pay a small consulting fee up front but to my mind it was well worth it! And at no time did we feel that Nevic was trying to sell his services - he was the consummate professional and I highly recommend him. read more

They knew where I was located and make some excuse up as to why they couldn't come out to help me as well as wanted to up charge me an traveling fee. Do not use this company even as a reference.
