I love the IDEA of Thieps Eats: Rice on the bottom ... then comes the Asian-fusion meats, from Chinese classics like Teriyaki Chicken to Indian fare like Yellow Curry Chicken. They've got Beef Phó (a hot broth and noodle I can't wait to have on a cold WINTER day); the spicy and sweet General Thieps (obviously, their in-house concoction); Balls of Fury (spicy seasoned rice with a cheesy center, rolled in Panko and fried) and Curry Tofu in yellow coconut curry. I only scratched the menu's surface here. I went for the Orange Chicken. The fried balls of chicken had a nice crispiness to them. The rice was soft and flavorful. The pot stickers (I added to my order) had me longing for more. I eat a lot of Orange Chicken, so I know my stuff. IMHO, I don't think their sauce is orangey enough or sweet enough. Good. Just not "top shelf". The small looking cup is surprisingly filling. I look forward to filling another bowl with another Thieps Eats classic! read more

Would leave zero stars if I could. Ordered the beef pho, and could not eat more than one bite. The meatballs were grey, processed, rubbery, and metallic tasting. Honestly the most disgusting meat I have had in recent memory. The broth was incredibly dark and oily and had a flavor reminiscent of vinegar, not at all what you would expect from a pho broth. Also, the pho is advertised as coming with chives, and they just shook a few dried chives on top. And there were maybe 3 total bean sprouts thrown in as well. The fried pot stickers would have maybe been the saving grace but they were just plopped into the pho and got soggy. My colleagues got the general Thieps chicken which was edible, but hardly better. It is literally popcorn chicken that you could buy a bag of at Costco, with sticky overly sweet orange chicken sauce drizzled on top of it. And then all of that is plopped on a pile of soggy/wet/overcooked rice which takes up 90% of the container that you pay $7 for. I have never posted a yelp review and I've had a yelp account for years, but this food truck was so utterly disappointing I felt the need to review it. I am in no way a picky eater and certainly not someone to throw away an entire full bowl of food, especially after paying $9 for it, but it truly was inedible. I saw that a new food truck carrying Asian food in cup like bowls was going to be at a local roundup and decided to check it out. With all the food trucks popping up some are good, some are great, some are just bad, and some are somewhere in between. This one seems to be one of the ones between good and great. The menu is a little larger than your standard 5 or 6 item food truck menu. They've got curries, chickens, a cup full of pot stickers, and much more. I decided to do a jumbo yellow curry for $9. I paid the extra $2 to make it a combo which included 2 pot stickers and a drink. The food came out really, really fast. Way faster than you normally get from a food truck. This made me a little nervous, but everything was just as warm as ever. The chicken tasted great, perfectly cooked and juicy. I was really impressed with the rice. Usually in these types of rice/noodle bowls you get a huge junk of unflavored rice with little sauce on it. All levels of this rice were covered in a perfect amount of sauce, even deep down at the bottom. The pot stickers were good as well, with crispy edges to them. My only complaint here is that there wasn't any hot sauce as far as I was aware. A little sriacha would have made this perfect. The most impressive thing though was the size. In all my food trucking I have ALWAYS finished my meal. I can honestly say that I could not finish this one. I ate and ate and ate, but there was still more to go. This was a welcome first as I felt that I actually got a good value for my money. Usually with food trucks you have to go in knowing you're going to be paying $10+ for a decent meal that will just barely fill you up. Not here. What happened!? This food truck used to be so amazing and the food was to die for! They changed their chicken to popcorn chicken! Got rid of the Jumbo Size, and the rice tasted like 1-minute rice! Such a disappointing visit to the food truck today. Ordered the Teriyaki Bowl . . . Teriyaki sauce + Popcorn chicken was not a good combo. The only thing that is worth it is the Pot-stickers. The food was also delivered fast (like 3 minutes) but that's not hard to do when seriously all the food is microwave quality. RIP Thieps, this will be my last time visiting :( read more

I tried the chicken curry. It was bland and devoid of any depth of flavor. Seven dollars for a few pieces of chicken on some rice doesn't do it for me. If I bought a drink I would've been paying nine dollars for lunch and the value is not even close to being there. read more

As others have commented, a big cup of rice with little defrosted popcorn chicken balls and sauce drizzled over it. Not good at all. At least for the teriyaki chicken, they should use real, non-breaded, and non-frozen chicken. And my husband asked if they ever add vegetables and she said no one would buy that.... not true! If they had rice with half GOOD chicken and half veggies, that would definitely be a hit! Look at your reviews and take a hint! read more

Went to watch the speed skating finals at the Olympic Oval and decided to try out the food from Thiep Eats food truck. I ordered the Orange chicken and I was pretty disappointed, because I didn't receive an orange chicken bowl at all. Instead it was a bowl of popcorn chicken "a bowl of lies" with a lite drizzle of a sweet sauce and some sesame seeds on top. I had the Thieps Chicken, and I concur with the other reviews, it was just small pieces of friend chicken topped in some sweet sauce, placed on top of some rice. It was edible but not worth much, I wouldn't ever want to eat it again. My husband got the teriyaki chicken and that was even worse, chicken -sauce- rice, no veggeis at all. Pho was greasy bland broth, spongy from-frozen meatballs (?!), and some sort of rice noodle/fettuccine noodle hybrid.... maybe 5 bean sprouts, topped with chopped green onions. I already think it's crazy that food trucks are so expensive but all (hint of sarcasm here) that for $10 was a huge disappointment. I got a side of the pot stickers, they also seemed prepackaged from frozen and were dry. My husband got the General Thieps and his review "Definitely not my favorite." Thieps Eats is a food truck with good tasting food and a fun vibe. For the past two years, I have been hitting this truck up whenever it is in Salt Lake City for the Takoyaki and Balls of Fury. The portions are the best for the amount you are paying, while the service is professional and kind. I've eaten here once before and I thought the food was average. This past week I was working the Lantern Fest event out at the Utah Motorsports Campus. I was pretty pumped to see the food truck there and I figured I would give it another shot. What I heard the owner say to someone turned me away for ever. First off: He was yelling at a woman probably only three inches from her face. Show some respect buddy. Second: He started yelling at another man and went on to call him a "F*CKING FAGGOT." This man needs to be taught a lesson and I care about how a company represents themselves just as much as I care about the food. In my mind his food tastes like shit now. I will never eat here again and I will advise people to never eat here either. I won't ever forget the little show he put on when he was upset. This food truck was outside the courtyard Marriott. I found it by accident. The hot and spicy cheese balls were very good. Hey wanted a sweet and sour sauce on them and you could add your own. Pretty tasty. The tofu curry rice was also very good. I would have liked pineapple or celery or water heat its or something crunchy in it. But it was a good curry. Serving sizes are large. read more

I ordered the General Thiep bowl. It is basically deep fried chicken nuggets with super sweet semi-spicy sauce on top, over rice. No veggies, no garnishes. Just fried chicken and sauce. This reminds me of the "Americanized" Chinese food you can find at places like Panda Express. They need to spend more time on flavor (beyond sugar and heat) and less time on cute logos and buzzwords on their containers "nom nom nom." Not so nom, nom, nom. This is not CupBop friends. Not even close. The sticky rice was an embarrassment. It was not sweet, and the mango added to the uber-tartness because....they did not use STICKY rice. It was the same rice used in their regular dishes. No joke. Who calls something sticky rice without using sticky rice (glutinous) rice? It is very different because it has its own inherent sweetness. The grains look a little transparent if you've got the right stuff. No more Thieps Eats for me! read more

Not very good. I've eaten here a couple times, and the rice tastes very strange. Like they spilled soap in it or something. I thought it was just a fluke, but it tasted the same both times. The chicken was crispy, but it was just frozen chicken and the sauce wasn't very flavorful plus there wasn't much of it. I only got two pot stickers for 2 dollars. They were probably bought in a pack of frozen pot stickers and worth 25 cents each (if that). I'd only recommend this truck if you're really hungry and there's nothing else around. I've eaten at this truck twice now. If I had other options, this wouldn't be my first choice but the food was solidly OK, and a good price for a food truck. Serving sizes are plentiful. First I had the chicken curry. It was....ok. Not much heat (which I like in my curry) and it was just chicken, curry, and rice. Over all, I was disappointed, I like the one I make at home better and I'm FAR from a great cook. The orange chicken surprised me though. The breading had a great flavor, and was super crunchy but the chicken was still moist. The sauce was great, not to sweet. The egg rolls are good. Maybe a little over done, but not dry at all. And it was FAST. If you need something warm, filling, and in a hurry, this truck is a great choice. read more

The curry chicken is good - a little on the spicier side of curry, but not too hot, although the chunks of chicken were pretty large - too much so to eat without a knife. While the food looked very good, and actually tasted OK, both I and a coworker came down with a terrible case of diahreah all afternoon and evening. Thiep's Eats is one of the great staples in the SLC food culture. My first time eating here was about 3 years ago and it was out of this WORLD!!! The staff is super fast, they're very accommodating my questions about certain items. They give great suggestions too. The menu is an amazing lineup of traditional Asian style plates, all done well, with other modern twists (the "Happy Ending"). I absolutely love this place and can't wait to go back. There really isn't much to say about this food truck. The food was edible and the cooks were friendly. The reason I give it a 3 stars is because there really wasn't anything special about their menu. The menu is fairly small but offered ok food. I ordered the chicken curry bowl with 2 potstickers. I paid $10. The bowl was pretty big so I was happy about that. The curry bowl had a slight burnt taste to it but I kind of liked it. The potstickers were pretty good but nothing out of the ordinary. They also offered an orange chicken bowl and a teriyaki chicken bowl. When I go to food trucks, I expect to pay a little bit extra for the amount of food I get because of the uniqueness of the menu and the experience...this place didn't quite deliver. Absolutely the worst food I have eaten in awhile. The "orange" chicken was literally popcorn chicken with an eye droplet of sauce on top...barely covering any of the meat at all.
