I've had Zao at many locations, never disappointed. I will add, it's great when you're stuck in the hospital as well. Had family pick this up so I could avoid eating hospital food for the 5th straight day. I love a chicken rice bowl with yellow curry, extra curry. The employees nailed it as usual! Very underwhelming! I don't understand the good ratings. The ladies were friendly and none of this is their fault, but holy hell, let me explain the problem here. It's like a watered down pan-Asian version of Chipotle, basically. If you like Chipotle, then fine, but i didn't like this. First off, the portions for steak was less than what Chipotle gives ya. I don't don't even think they give you a full ladle of steak. Then it's sits atop a bed of noodles that takes up the bowl. Seeing as though I was about to buy a cheap imitation of Chipotle, I opted to add a side of $2.50 yakisoba. Was it yakisoba? No. It was a tiny bowl of soba noodles with a few slices of cabbage and sauce, that was it. How you gonna call that yakisoba? I was quite underwhelmed to pay $21 for this. The dining room wasn't bad, it was clean, and such. I just don't understand people liking this place. But you do you. I won't revisit. Even if someone suggests, I'll immediately thumbs down and if they insist, I'll go to damn Chipotle across the parking lot in protest. read more

Whenever I feel like eating something fresh and healthy ZAO comes to mind. I judge a place on how good their food taste to-go and ZAO never disappoints. I already have my favorite dishes here but everything I've tried taste yummy! The salad and the tacos are my favorite, the salad has a romaine and nappa cabbage base then you get to pick a protein (chicken,steak,meatballs, and tofu) and other veggies plus dressing. I always pick both dressings, chili lemongrass and sesame ginger vinaigrette. I can never decide on just one, besides they both taste amazing when mixed. My other favorite at ZAO are the tacos with tofu as my protein and topped with chili aoli sauce. If you haven't already tried Zao your missing out. I can't wait till next time. read more

Almost entirely gluten free and delicious. They are very stingy with their topping quantities -probably because they want the up charges to add more. Clean fresh and decent price points, great if you factor in nearly all gluten free ... I crave this place often. read more

Came here on a Saturday afternoon and there was one other person in here. First thoughts were that the place looks neat and clean. They had two people behind the counter that were very helpful and respectful. Since it was my first time here, I didn't really know the tastes. I was really curious about the meatballs and what they tasted like so the man behind the counter gave me a sample without any hesitation. I ordered the bowl with brown rice, carrots, a full order of chicken and meatballs, cilantro, topped off with their yellow curry. Such a good bowl! The flavors were awesome. I couldn't finish the bowl because they put tons of rice. That's the only reason I docked them one star- too much rice. Rice is a filler that most places pile on because it's cheap, so it looks like your getting tons of food. Next time, I'll ask for light rice. Overall, good food, clean tables and chairs, spacious, respectful and helpful staff. I'll come back for sure. read more

One of the best Asian bowls I've ever had. During an extended stay away from home at the hotel across the street for the worst reason possible (my brother was critically ill), this food dead my soul healthy but comforting food. Service was good the man and women were very attentive they even asked if we wanted to try the meat, without me telling them it was our first time. We were on our way to a show and needed some quick eats--and that's one thing that I always look forward to about Zao. These folks can sling together a meal really quickly and you'll be eating it up in no time. I'd never been to this location before, and it showed in my wandering the parking lot looking for it. You can't really see it from State Street if you're passing by in front of the development, so I drove the whole length of it before I realized that the storefront actually faces south and it's right there on the south and of the strip mall, just wrapped around that last corner. I've been to a couple of other locations and I usually get the salad, and it's dependable, but I was feeling a changeup coming so I went with the rice bowl. The woman behind the counter was the most no-nonsense kind I've encountered. She was all business, and she got down to business getting me my rice bowl with her short questions. I think the chicken was fine, the veggies were mostly okay, but there was something in the bowl (corn, maybe?) that was just really throwing the whole thing off, and it was mixed all in. It was somewhat crunchy, but not with a crispness. It was the kind of crunch that felt like almost-cooked rice, or corn that was halfway to popcorn. I kept picking it out of my teeth and soldiered on, but it was a downer on what would have been a perfectly serviceable meal. We were zippy fast in and out, and that's a real positive. The place is nice enough, and since we were a little later in the evening, it was quiet. Oh zao, how you disappoint me so. I love going to zao's for their rice bowls cause it's quick, healthy and delicious. I've been to zao so many time in the downtown area and loved every bit of it. Came here on a Sunday evening to grab dinner for take out. Everything seem normal. The staff was friendly and I ordered the usual. Which was a rice bowl, with beef and veggie along with curry sauce and zao's style. Took the food home, smelling fantastic while driving home. When I got home, I sat down really happy ready to enjoy my food. First bite into my mouth I've almost broken my jaw. The brown rice was so hard and under cook. Basically I was eating raw rice the entire time. I'm not sure if anyone taught people in this branch on how to make rice, but this way was definitely not it. I'm a Zao regular, but typically in a different location. Perhaps the other location set high standards, and this one now leaves me disappointed. 3/4 times I've had a negative experience. The first two times, my online order was incorrect. Completely different base and sauce. This last time, the chicken was so rough you could barely bite into it. Everything tasted as if it had been sitting out for days. I couldn't finish my bowl because it was so gross. I'll continue to go to my regular Zao and avoid this one at all costs. read more

I love Zao! The food is always really good and tasty! But this last visit made me give it 3 stars. I wanted a bowl but I wanted to substitute the rice for veggies instead. So I asked the girl if I could do that, so no rice and substitute the veggies. She said yes. So I assumed that would work. But then she gave me like 1/3 cup of broccoli so I asked for a little more, and then she put on a tiny bit of corn and I ask for a little more. Because again I was substituting the veggies for the rice. But I had asked if that was ok and she said yes. So then I go to pay and they charge me extra for the veggies??? I was so confused! Why didn't she tell me that at the beginning? She should have communicated that with me. It didn't make sense to charge me extra for veggies when it's substituting the rice. Anyway it left a bad taste in my mouth :( read more

Color me pleasantly surprised. I went with my friend who works pretty close to it and he had nothing but good things to say about it. Like others have said, it really is different! It's a solid fusion of Asian and Western food styles and for being a local chain, I was really surprised on how fresh everything tasted. I got the Zao Tacos with steak with everything on it. Super awesome and great tasting, the only thing I'll do next time is put less slaw on it as it does mask the flavors a little bit. All the drinks there are organic and free trade which is something really cool that you usually wouldn't think about when getting a soda from the fountain. The menu is misleading. It says choose between rice or noodles, but neglects to indicate that it is $.99 more for the noodles. Their drinks are also pricey. The portions are good. The chicken was dry. The tofu was okay. I wish there were more choices for sides. It is also ridiculous that they charge an extra dollar if you want more sauce.
