It pains me to write this, because the ladies are sweet, but today, a month after my haircut at Third Prince Salon, I went to a different salon to get a balayage, and my stylist thought my hair looked like it had BREAKAGE at first. So when I went to Third Prince 3 weeks ago, I asked for my hair to be thinned and given layers. We had a fun time, and Patty gave me her opinions on how my hair should look and what she thought of my hair color (she insisted she likes it now, but I still wanted to dye it lighter). At the end, she only charged me $40 for wash + haircut + blow dry styling. Honestly, when I left, I was satisfied, so if you don't know much about hair, and you only look at yourself from the front, you'll probably be okay with the results too (see photo of my day of). However, the more experienced stylist at the salon I went to today said that my hair wasn't thinned evenly. That's why the ends were too thin, making my hair seem damaged, and the crown of the head was still thick. The uneven density made it hard to dye my hair well. read more

Props to Patty for being mega efficient! I was in and out in 30 minutes without feeling super rushed. I arrived at 1:57 for my 2pm appointment and I was seated immediately. Patty went to work on cutting my hair, giving me advice on what would best suit my face and hair style. She didn't have to wet my hair which I was surprised by. Then, she washed my hair and gave a great scalp massage (always my favorite part of getting my hair cut). Afterwards, she blow dried my hair and made some finishing cuts to even everything out and styled my hair by giving it loose curls. This was my first time at the salon and by far my best salon experience ever. I love Patty's energy. She was welcoming and fun but very professional and had a expert eye. Price is very reasonable. I called to make an appointment and luckily she was able to fit me in the day of. I have very long, wavy hair that was up to my butt and I wanted to chop it off to donate. I was worried Patty would not be familiar with the procedure so I called ahead to ask and was assured that she was familiar with the process. I showed her a few inspo pics and left it to her on what length bob would fit best with my face shape. She asked me detailed questions such as whether I would like to be able to tie it up still or not at all and after some discussion we decided on the length which would end up being the shortest I've ever gotten. She thoroughly analyzed my head and hair to recommend the cut and dye color that would work best for me. She was also friendly, informative and encouraging as I watched her absolutely TRANSFORM my hair. The entire process (cut, dye, wash and blow dry) took just under 2 hours. I was extremely past due for a hair cut and searched Yelp for a salon that is open during COVID-19 era with good reviews. My hair was long past my shoulders, messy and very annoying causing agitation especially in the summer's excessive dangerous heat and high humidity. Third Prince Salon appeared at the top of my search and the business info does not state "by appointments only," but it is strongly recommended. I walked-in without an appointment at 3:45 pm on a December 2020 Thursday early evening and waited patiently to be serviced after proper COVID-19 protocols (temperate checks, hand sanitizing, and COVID-19 survey questions). This is a very small salon with very limited seats and is cash only. Despite the business address is Grand Street the actual entrance is located on Baxter Street which awry one's orientation to locating the entrance. Patty, the licensed hair stylist took her time and focused attention on my problematic hair. She is very skilled and experienced with hair as my hair is very unusual. I had a very specific length in mind modeled after an English actress and shown her photos results as I got exactly that same length! Reasonably priced for $40.00 with Patty's focused attention, time, and careful effort to style my hair I was compelled to give a generous tip but she forthright refused. Patty made many positive suggestions to make my hair more fabulous of celebrity status during the entire time cutting and styling my hair which were very noted as many past hair stylists suggested similar ideas: highlights, hair bob style, and including coloring. I had layered many times in the past. I also had childish bangs or a fringe to fall my scalp's front hairline and covered my eyes. With due respect, I am traditionist conservative and prefer my hair to be natural "as is," but never say never as the future is unknown. I was gazed in awe at the large amount of hair removed when looking at the floor - yes, that is all my hair. The end result I am truly enamored with my hair length. Patty, the hair stylist is the most determined person for an impeccable hair style achieved as per the client's wishes. My hair cut experience was an exquisite exercise of style and design! Sharon, the hair washer is friendly. Both are fluent in Cantonese and English skills (at long last someone is fluent in both Cantonese and English, hooray!) Everything I have to say has already been said, but gonna say it anyway. Best haircut experience I've ever had by far, incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and I'd give more than 5 stars if I could. They'll make you feel like you're being pampered at a high-end salon for a fraction of the price. I thought I was getting special treatment, but based on the reviews here, the two owners manage to make EVERYONE feel that way - truly talented at both the technical and social aspects of a great hair salon experience! I always try to go to Asian-owned salons, and after moving to NYC somewhat recently, my friend recommended Third Prince. I walked in on a weekday after lunchtime, and Patty greeted me like an old friend and sat me right down (I think I got lucky because someone walked in later and was turned away for not having an appointment). She started by asking what I wanted, and I gave her a pretty basic description with my limited hair vocabulary. Patty took a look at my hair and immediately recognized that it was naturally wavy and thick unlike the straight hair of most East Asians (something a lot of other Asian places fail to realize because they wash my hair right away), and started giving me some great suggestions on care and styles that fit my face. Some of those care tips I had already figured out on my own through years of trial-and-error, but the way she knew them right off the top of her head speaks to her expertise. At other fancy places, you'd have to pay $100+ alone for a "hair consultation" like that. We came to a decision together, a great balance of feeling heard but also getting expert feedback. Patty opted to do my hair wash at the end so she could work with my natural hair texture, and she worked quickly but very carefully, checking in with me to make sure she didn't go shorter than I wanted. The hair wash was like a warm and soothing head massage that is absolutely worth the extra $10. At the end, Patty blow dried my hair and even threw in a hair curling to get my hair wavy so I could see how it would look naturally - I felt like I was being prepped for some special event, not just getting a mundane haircut! I never felt rushed and got so much personal attention, and when I tried to give a nice tip, Patty tried to refuse it a couple times before eventually giving in to my compliments. My son and I had a very short window for a haircut when visiting NYC, and Patty was able to take us as walk-ins. I am typically lowkey so when Patty took a look at my hair and knew exactly what is needed, it made me very happy. I didn't have to spend time explaining anything; she knew right away what to do to make it more voluminous and adding movement. Moreover, the cut framed my face shape. I've been coming here for 3 years now. I was hesitant when i first came because i had been going to my previous salon for yrs before they closed down & had traumatic hair experiences at other salons. I want to emphasize that my review is only about the end product of the service, NOT of the service providers. Patty was very kind and welcoming throughout my entire visit, however, I was not happy with the haircut I received and wanted to provide information for other potential customers with wavy hair. I would NOT recommend this salon for any type of textured hair. Based on the other reviews, it seems Patty is great for straight hair but I did NOT like what she did to my textured hair. TL;DR I had most of my thick, wavy, mid-back hair chopped off with thinning shears and now I hardly have any hair and my curl clumps do not form anymore. I'm absolutely devastated; prior to this haircut I had so much hair that I struggled to get it to stay in a bun or claw clip, and now I barely have enough hair to put into a bun at all. I have wavy 2a Asian hair. This was one of the first things I tried communicating when I first sat down, and I think this is where the misunderstanding/miscommunication between me and Patty began. I also explicitly requested to maintain my length as much as possible with the understanding that I'd lose at least an inch or so just given the nature of haircuts. Patty seemed to immediately understand what I was trying to explain but I should've seen the red flags when Patty said that I shouldn't use the products I normally do (curl cream, mousse, and gel) which anyone familiar with wavy/curly hair knows are normal products to use to define hair texture. I asked for face-framing pieces and long layers, which Patty agreed to. However, in the end she cut my hair how she wanted as opposed to listening to my wishes. I've had my hair thinned out in the past, but I did not ask to have it thinned this time, ONLY layers. I've never had so much hair thinned out in one haircut in my life. When Patty was done with the thinning shears, there was an absolutely massive pile of my hair on the ground. Anyone experienced with textured hair knows that you are not supposed to use thinning shears on waves or curls (again, only layers). I was in so much shock that I could only sit there and grin through the rest of the cut since I figured it would be better to have my whole head thinned as opposed to just half. After she was done thinning out 90% of my hair, Patty then told me I should not put product in my hair, that diffusing was not necessary and that I can just blow dry my roots and let my ends air-dry, and to just put it in a braid for my waves to come out. This was the last glaring sign that she was not familiar with textured hair. Again, I want to emphasize that this review is not about Patty's attitude or demeanor, she was very kind and bubbly the entire time. I just wish she had listened to my wishes and the photo I showed her of my hair texture which is different from typical straight Asian hair. I give 2 stars instead of 1 for her kindness, but if I were just rating the haircut I would give it a 0 or a 1 star because I think this is the worst my hair has looked in a very long time. At the beginning of my cut, Patty told me that whoever cut my hair last did a bad job. I respectfully disagree, I strayed from my previous salon to this one because of the cheaper prices and bad reviews, but a cheaper price is not worth a terrible haircut when I have to spend a year growing my hair out just to get to where it was before this cut. Lesson learned, please check that the salon you're trying out is experienced with textured hair! I do not believe Third Prince Salon is appropriate for textured hair. If you are coming to this salon with any sort of texture at all, I caution you to be VERY VERY EXPLICIT with what you're looking for, or to just go to another salon altogether that's more experienced with textured hair. I'm very devastated that I will have to spend the next year or so with my hair in claw clips as I wait for my hair to grow out. I am left with so little hair that when I put my hair into a ponytail, it looks like I barely have any hair at all. read more

Also, she's the only one who I know can do a dry cut properly. Run, don't walk to Patty! My hair went all the way down to my butt. It was heavy, flat, prone to tangling, and a little feral looking. I feel bad that I'm the first to leave a not 5 star review but it's just my experience honestly speaking. I came in here without an appointment unfortunately on a busy day so with 3 clients ahead of me and 2 with appointments for coloring, I ended up waiting 2 hours. Patty was really apologetic about it which I appreciated. I highly recommend coming here knowing exactly how you like your hair to be. Sorry but it might have been my fault that I said I just wanted a cut without specifying how much I wanted cut. So from a U shaped cut to a V shaped cut. And a complimentary impromptu lesson on how to use the straightener, I walked out of there with the same haircut Jennifer Aniston had when she was on "Friends". I think it is a really great place to get a trim though and the price is great too compared to other hair salons I've been to. Patty was very nice and really tried to make conversation. I explained my hair story to her about how I cut my hair once and regretted it a little before loving it and told her I wanted it shorter but she kept it the same length but just thinned my hair at the bottom. While the end product was pretty, I wish she had cut it shorter like I had requested. I've been there twice now and am so pleased these Yelp reviews compelled me to make my first appointment in September. The COVID protocol is excellent: you put your mask in a baggie and put on a sterilized mask they give you. Then your temperature is taken. Only 2 customers in the salon at once. I had a great shampoo with a bit of a massage, and then got the perfect haircut for me. I have super thin, fine straight hair that grows SUPER fast. V annoying. Patty (I think that's her name?) looked at the picture I brought and gave me a version of it perfectly suited to my hair. It's a long bob and it's on POINT. I paid $40 plus $10 tip and $5 for the shampoo tip. Super reasonable for a wash/cut/style in NYC--and we all want to keep family businesses going nowadays. Highly recommend. read more
