I explained my hair story to her about how I cut my hair once and regretted it a little before loving it and told her I wanted it shorter but she kept it the same length but just thinned my hair at the bottom. While the end product was pretty, I wish she had cut it shorter like I had requested. She was very generous in giving me a free curl and my friend a free curl as well and provided complimentary water. Overall, I definitely recommend coming here for the price and experience! I've been there twice now and am so pleased these Yelp reviews compelled me to make my first appointment in September. The COVID protocol is excellent: you put your mask in a baggie and put on a sterilized mask they give you. Then your temperature is taken. Only 2 customers in the salon at once. I had a great shampoo with a bit of a massage, and then got the perfect haircut for me. I have super thin, fine straight hair that grows SUPER fast. V annoying. Patty (I think that's her name?) looked at the picture I brought and gave me a version of it perfectly suited to my hair. It's a long bob and it's on POINT. I paid $40 plus $10 tip and $5 for the shampoo tip. Super reasonable for a wash/cut/style in NYC--and we all want to keep family businesses going nowadays. Highly recommend. read more

I was over due for a hair cut and saw good reviews of this salon on Yelp so I decided to pop by last week to take a look. Patty and Sharon were welcoming and helpful in the impromptu short consult I had and I was able book an appointment for today. Patty cut my hair and could not be more lovely. She was gentle, informative and just kind. She was generous with her time and knew what cut would work best for my fine hair. I had a great experience and am happy with the cut which gave my hair more body. This is a low key salon with quality results. They are taking careful precautions due to covid such a temperature check when you get in, limiting the number of customers in the salon to one or two at a time and disinfecting after each customer. They are doing appointments only at this time, so go in or call ahead to make one. Overall I definitely recommend this salon and I will be back again for my next cut. read more

WINNER! I am so shocked to find a low key yet perfect place. I am gender non-binary (which doesn't really matter -- it's just that salons gender us, right? one price for men, another for women). Normally, I go to a barber to get the fade and precision on my sides, and higher end salon for my top and back. PATTY DOES BOTH! And the price is right. She also is amazing and fun, speaks English/Mandarin/Malaysian so we could fully communicate -- and what a great convo we had!! Hair is the style you want on your head, not what's below your waist. As a visitor to New York, I was hoping to find a place where I could comfortably experiment with bold color - by which I mean blue. I had a vague notion that balayage was the technique I wanted, and a colleague recommended that I visit Patty, who does his hair. One of the best recommendations I've ever had! Patty understood my hair. She understood its texture (very, very soft and fine on top; tending to curl on the bottom) and how to cut it for volume and also convinced me that foiling would be the better technique to get the effect I wanted. She and Sharon both worked on me, and they did an amazing job and made it not only pleasant but FUN. The results are fabulous. Four people stopped me in the streets yesterday to compliment my hair. On top of this the price was incredibly reasonable, and she gave me tips on maintaining the color, including where to find the product at reasonable prices. I have no doubt that this is going to be one of the highlights of my trip, and I will try to share pictures, even though they don't really do the blue justice. Stopped in this shop for the first time yesterday afternoon for a haircut. I didn't have an appt, but Patty graciously squeezed me in. She looked at my hair and immediately diagnosed me with the following: "you airdry, and sleep with your hair down." 100% accurate. I immediately trusted her to cut my locks. She is the sweetest lady! She gave me face framing layers and a U shape in the back to add volume. I am very satisfied with the outcome. She sent me on my way with a quick curl service free of charge. To top it off, I tried to tip her more than customary, for her exceptional service. She refused this and said "I can't! It's too much!" I was astounded - never came across this in the service industry. She ended up giving back part of my tip and said "it's because I want you to come back again!" I will most certainly be back. Patty is so great! It was hard to schedule an appointment, but maybe it would be easier to call Patty's personal number than the one I called (the one listed on Yelp.) Her number is shown on one of the photos on Yelp. I've had two cuts with Patty and they were both great. Her sister Sharon is a lovely lady, and though I haven't had a cut with her, she was so welcoming and accommodating to my sister and I, who came with me. I got one of my best haircuts at this place. I came in requiring a clean-up of some really bad layers a previous hair stylist at a different place in the state I live (San Francisco, CA) had done. But Patty fixed my hair in a jiffy and gave me some wonderful tips to manage my dry, frizzy hair. She was nice and caring throughout, really quick (30 mins max) and truly listened. I live in a different state but I'm going to make sure to come to Third Prince Salon whenever I'm in NYC and plan my haircut timing accordingly. I brought my mom with me for a haircut and a wash + blow out today and both of us couldn't be happier! I wasn't due for a cut but figured I'd accompany my mom who is visiting from out of town by getting a blow out for moral support. Patty was lovely to chat with and I really appreciated that she was so positive. A lot of hair dressers will tell you stuff like your previous hair color job or cut job sucked, or try to upsell you on a treatment you don't need, but Patty didn't do any of that. She was genuine and skilled at her craft and made the experience so pleasant! Sharon also gave me a wonderful wash/scalp massage which they call "not really a head massage" - but they were being modest; it was fantastic. Can't wait to go back! read more

Honestly probably the best haircut I've ever had. I came in with just a length in mind, and asked Patty to help me figure out what would look best with my face structure. She explained to me my hair type and how she was planning on cutting it so that it wouldn't stick out weirdly. Amazing hair wash with a bit of a massage, and I had a lovely conversation with her. She explained different ways I could style my resulting haircut, and even demonstrated some waves and added volume with wax. She said her goal was to make my natural hair look beautiful, and to make a long lasting haircut. Just wanted to update that 3 years later, still 5/5 stars here-- I'd give more if I could. Patty is still the best hairdresser I've ever had and the only person I'll go to for cuts. When I lived out of state I'd wait until I could drive 300 miles to NYC to come see her specifically. Before her, I went to a number of mid-to-high end "modern" shops, Korean salons, established queer hairstylists-- I've found many stylists will project who they think you are onto you, which is hard when a bad haircut will leave me feeling dysphoric for months. But Patty always asks in detail what I'm looking for, produces results that actually look like the pictures, and checks in with me throughout the process what she's doing based on my specific hair texture/patterns and why. She moves with thought, non-judgement, and care that I am frankly impressed anyone can sustain in general let alone at a job, but that's because both she and her sister are genuinely kind, generous people inside and out. Patty goes above and beyond what I would dare hope for at most salons. I try to leave sizable tips because I am guaranteed results here that are questionable at shops where I've paid 4x the price, and encourage anyone who can to do so as well! read more

Patty was super nice which is why I've put off writing this review... I got my hair cut there in July. I wanted a chin-length cut with the hair going in toward my face and showed her a pic of myself after a good haircut I liked. She said the stylist who cut that wasn't good because they made my hair flip out, and she said she would make it go in. Fine, she did--with a hair curler. After I washed my hair and let it air dry, it looked awful. Everything was going out in random directions. It even looked uneven just because it was sticking out so randomly. My hair is not difficult and has never looked like that before (other than maybe when I let my friend practice cutting hair on me in middle school). The haircut in the pic I showed wasn't perfectly swooping in all the time, but it was like that most of the time and way neater than what Patty gave me. I can let a bad haircut go, but to add injury to insult, the bra that I wore on that day STILL has bits of cut hair stuck in it. Even though I've washed it every 1-2 weeks since July! It's really irritating to my skin, and I don't know how to fix it other than gradually plucking out the hairs with a tweezer as more and more emerge with each wash cycle. The prices are cheap, and I feel bad about this review because Patty was genuinely very nice, but I'm never going here again. I'd much rather spend $120 or whatever on a haircut than go through this again. read more

I made an appointment and was in and out in less than an hour, and that included a very relaxing shampoo, dry (she prefers to dry cut), thorough haircut, final blow dry and flat iron. I just had my first cut with Patty and I wished this was a 10 star rating system because that's what she deserves. She was as sweet as everyone says she was, very personable and chatted as if we knew each for years even though this was the first time meeting her. She took such care cutting my hair and gave so much tips on how to take care of it and styling it. She was very skilled and cleaned up the mess that my last stylist made, I'm in love with the new cut. When I asked her how much I owed her she told me let's just make it $30 with everything.....I'm like what?!! No way!! So I insisted on giving her $40 for the great cut, but she wouldnt hear of it and insisted giving me back my change...I even tried to fight her (like only the Chinese do) but she won. Oh on top of that, she said I can come back anytime to get my side burns cut, if I didn't know how to, free of charge....WHAT?! I LOVE Patty and will definitely making her my go to stylist. read more
