This was my first salon experience. I've never had someone else wash my hair before. I've never had my hair tied up in that towel wrap thing that women put on after a shower. I've never felt pretty before (still haven't). So clearly, my hair has never been as pampered as when Effie washed, conditioned, and carefully cut and styled it herself. As I'm sure you can imagine, I've been going to barbers my entire life, because I've never had enough hair to really worry about how it gets cut. The funny thing about hair though is that it grows. Since I haven't had it cut in seven months (about six months longer than I usually go), now my hair's all long, and I figured if I'm gonna have long hair, I needed someone who knows what they're doing. Well, Effie knows what she's doing for sure. She is very clearly skilled and knowledgable; I've never seen someone systematically attack my head in such a practiced way. She had a plan, whereas most barbers I've been to just have clippers. That said, she did seem to sort of ignore what I asked her to do, and just cut my hair how she thought it should look. I'm not that upset because she made it look good, but I kind of wanted...what I wanted. A new year means a fresh start! And that starts with a fresh cut! Plus, the last time I had a haircut was over the summer of 2022.... so just to let you know... my hair is likely damaged and needs a trim/cut..asap! I decided to come to Hare studio since I passed by the location when I went out to get dinner. I peeked in and saw it was clean and spacious. I noted down the salon's name and decided to do some research. I was very impressed with their work and photos. So! I decided to give it a shot and made an appointment for a simple haircut with Effie. I went in about 20 minutes early during my appt date since it's right by my workplace (so I went over during my lunch...I gave up food for a haircut... unheard of!!! but glad I did...read on haha). I had to wait a bit since I was early and Effie was busy with another client. But it was fine. I was eventually assisted with hanging my coat and into a smock thing for my haircut. I was offered water as I was settling down into the chair, so that was really nice and honestly it's the small simple things you know? Anyways, then Effie came over to me and asked what I wanted to do. I informed Effie of what I wanted, which was just a few inches off and layers. I was then directed to get my hair washed first. The assistant was very gentle with my hair wash and felt very comfortable as he did what needed to be done. Even combing my knotted hair he was gentle and didn't tug really my hair, so I was thankful for that. (Back to the chair and haircut started) I informed Effie that my last haircut was over the summer so my hair was long overdue for a cut. I again told her what I wanted and Effie took it and went above and beyond. I'll be honest, I thought it was just a haircut, nothing too complicated. It'll be real quick. It did take longer than I expected only because Effie was very detailed. She layered my hair in such a fashion that my underneath color (that's currently like a blonde color rn) showed up more. So it seems like I've dyed it but it was just layered!!! I did not think about the color under just...haircut ...layers...done! AGAIN! I did not expect to love my haircut so much cause I thought just simple layering and all that. Super impressed with Effie's work. Also, Effie was very friendly and I was comfortable enough to ask her about her thoughts on my hair condition and how far I can go with dying my hair... If I plan to (which I do in a few months. ) I showed some photos of what I had in mind and she gave me her thoughts. ALSO! Effie's language skills! I heard her speak Canto, mando, and (obv) English during my one visit. (Yes, I understood them all too). Talk about catering to the client's language! Like around LES, you expect either one of the other but Effie seems fluent in all. So lang. is not an issue (one of my fears sometimes, I don't believe my Chinese is that strong. The salon and staff are all very nice but I wouldn't recommend going here for fantasy colors. I went to have them bleach (double processing) about a year's worth of grown out hair so I could do pastels colors all over. The bleaching was uneven leaving thick rings that weren't light enough to take on fantasy colors dye and caused a lot more breakage than I'm used to. I had to pay to have the dye job corrected at another salon a couple weeks later. They seem great for other kinds of services but don't think lightening for fantasy colors is their specialty. read more

The absolute best. I've been going to Hare Studio regularly since May 2021, when I decided to bleach and dye my naturally black hair into a cool ash blonde color. I get tons of compliments on my hair. It goes without saying that Effie is extremely talented at creating beautiful, even color. When I first bleached and dyed my hair, Effie walked me through the exact shade of blonde I wanted, and applied the bleach and toner in a way that created beautiful consistent color throughout. Not an uneven patch in sight! I now go in every few weeks for a root touch-up, and Effie always makes sure the color looks incredibly seamless. She really put a lot of care into the process and I found myself falling asleep quite a few times. Emily made sure that my roots were bleached evenly all throughout. I have long hair that's been pretty damaged due to bleaching and dying it a lot so her advice really helped me out. I came here for a rose gold ombré/balayage. I've grown to become nervous anytime someone does my hair because in the past I've had bad hair experiences. Emily did my hair and first off, she spent probably 30 minutes carefully discussing what I wanted to do with my hair. Effie took me from dark brunette to a pastel silver color and did an incredible job, as well as giving me a haircut! See pictures for the transformation! I've gone to Hare Studio twice now, and both during the pandemic. I wanted to go somewhere walking distance so I didn't have to take the train, and I'm so happy I found Effie! Her salon is behind Vivi's bubble tea, so just walk straight in and past it. I like the earliest appt slots, so Vivi's is usually still dark when I arrive. The first time I came, I was overdue for my balayage and Effie explained everything she was going to do that day. She even shows hair color samples and gives recommendations, which is very helpful for someone who's very indecisive! She had to fully rebleach my hair to achieve the right color, and I was happy with how it turned out! There was one other client that came in during my appointment slot, but understandable because coloring hair can take mad long. We kept our masks on the entire time, and she recommends you to bring a disposable one since the dye can stain it. The second time I came was for a tone and haircut. Again, very pleased with the outcome! I usually don't spend this much on haircuts, but the previous place I went to kinda messed up my layers, so I was willing to spend more to fix it. I'm floored at how great my color by Emily turned out. I wanted ashy blonde-platinum balayage but also had prior hair adventures (see before photo). I had super dead ends with various toners in the past, and she used different bleach formulations to make sure my hair lightened evenly and as much as possible --without damage. The color and blending from roots to end was obviously tough (took 7+ hrs) but the end result was worth it. Emily listened to what I wanted in terms of color, and asked questions along the way regarding what I wanted for face framing, how I wear my hair, etc for color placement. The salon is super clean and COVID compliant. You can tell all the staff take a lot of pride in their work. Emily is a true artist!! I've been thinking about doing something creative with my hair for the longest time but never put my thoughts to action. As my birthday is coming up (it's also pride month!) This is my second time going to Emily. I first went to her in January to dye my hair for the first time in my life. I voiced my opinions to Emily that I wanted something lowkey (but fun) yet low maintenance, so we went with cool-toned deep purple peekaboo that fades into blue. I also told her that I have very fine hair and might be afraid of the bleach being too strong on my hair. She took all my concerns into consideration and delivered exactly what I wanted. Over the next few months, the fading was a fun journey and I got to experience purple, blue, and a bit of green. My hair never once felt dry/damaged and still felt very healthy! I went back to her recently to change up the colors for the spring and summer. I told her that I wanted to go dark pink that fades into pale pink. She told me there might be a chance that my current blue won't lift well, and pink might not be possible unless we do a very vibrant magenta, but it all depends on the bleaching session. I first found out about Effie's magic through a friend, who had gorgeous long ombre hair. No split ends and no fake hair. Just beautiful, long, perfectly trimmed hair. I had been trying to find a hair stylist for a while and had experienced some pretty awful cuts. When I first met Effie, my hair was awful, like really awful. Misshapen, uneven sides. Effie was nice but not worth cutting your hair here. I just had a simple cut for shorter hair and the result came out ugly . The cost was $100 and 15% tips . This is super expensive and I did not wash my hair just a simple cut. Definitely a total rip off. I think this place is only good for dying hair. I recommended going to other places like in Chinatown or Brooklyn and a cut will just cost less than $30 and I'm able to only give $2-$5 tip. read more

Got my hair done yesterday with Effie and it was probably the best hair salon experience I've ever had in NYC. I've been a loyal customer at unfade studio also on the LES for over 3 yrs. I felt like every time I left I wasn't entirely satisfied at that studio even though they are so pricey. I kept going back because I was comfortable and scared to go somewhere else where they would mess up my hair more. After my last experience with them, they messed up my hair but then also made me feel like I should be grateful that they scheduled another hair appointment with me free of charge to fix what they had done to my hair. I thank Emily for doing my hair as I am not a typical client which will be explained below. I do not think the salon is familiar with Asian Indian hair texture. I give Hare studio a three for several reasons. My scalp is burned and still hurts and I got my hair done on 10/30/2022. My hair may not be fried but my scalp is. I did not get the vibrant blue I wanted. It is way more darker then expected. I also wish I was disclosed this hair dye is Demi permanent and not semi. It was too late for me to back out when I found this out. You pay a lot of money to have Demi permanent hair and not semi. I also received a hair cut of layers which were not the layers I wanted and I had a picture for reference. Some things that were well about Hare salon. I was not rushed out. I was offered water. It was very clean. I was offered good aftercare instructions. The salon is familiar with color dye that is demi permanent. The reason for Demi dye is due to the clientele they serve. She did take the undertones out of my hair. Emily has experience. I was not a typical client as i dyed my Virgin black hair a midnight blue from store bought box dye. I did not bleach it. I really, really wanted to like this place. I moved to to the area a while ago and had been trying to find a good place to get my very long and wavy/curly hair cut that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I read the online reviews and they seemed overwhelmingly glowing, so I booked an appointment at Hare Studio. I had an appointment with Effie, who was very nice and extremely cool - everyone at the salon had incredible style. I told her I wanted basically a trim (my hair is cut...or was...at a slight angle, longer in the front, which worked best for my wavy/curly hair). She suggested a FEW face framing layers, which I declined to at first, but then she suggested again, and so I agreed to it, because I figured, hey, she's the stylist, maybe she has the right idea. This was my mistake. The hair looked good when Effie dried it straight, but I noticed that it wasn't as angled as before. I attributed it to the fact that I don't straighten my hair really ever, and maybe that's how it looked straight. But everyone with curly hair knows that the real test is when you wash it. Well, I just did. And it's awful. The cut is almost the opposite - longer in the back than the front - and therefore gives my hair the "triangle" look that it didn't have with the original cut, which I wanted to KEEP. I'm upset and disappointed that she didn't follow my requests and instead worked as though my hair was thin and straight instead of thick and wavy/curly. Also: on the website and on all their social media accounts, it says that customers have to be masked. One customer came in about 30 minutes after my appointment started and she did not wear a mask at all, and no one said anything. Meanwhile, I'm sweating in my mask as my hair is being blow-dried.
