I went to Thisbowl around 5 pm tonight. There was a massive line going outside the storefront. I bought the OG bowl with salmon when I got to the front. At first glance, it seems as if this place was popular for takeout. There were not a lot of people dining in. I am not sure if I've been charged more for my bowl, but my bowl was $1 more than the listed price on the menu. No biggie, it still tastes pretty good. Here's my complaint. There was only one choice of protein but there was only around 3 pieces??? Most of the bowl consisted of seaweed salad and rice. I'm happy that This Bowl has officially come to the States. Overall, I'm a fan of the location - the space is big and welcoming and has a very clean aesthetic. The staff was helpful in navigating the space. Plus the menu wasn't too big so it made it easy to order plus reassures that the food is super fresh to eat from. I've been to the Soho location twice now. They're busy but moves pretty quickly. The Sunday lunch crowd is definitely bigger than the Saturday crowd. The staff is friendly and efficient. Unfortunately, I do not understand the hype about this place. My overpriced salmon bowl was lacking in flavor and creativity. The store wasn't even that busy, but I don't think they had a good system down in terms of people picking up their order because they gave me the wrong order which I only noticed once I realized some of my customizations were missing. The staff was very nice and attentive and immediately fixed my order, but The portion of salmon on my first order was double the portion on the order that I received when it was corrected. So I don't know if the wrong order I got simply had a double portion. I was very disappointed when I got my small skimpy piece of salmon. The ambience of the place was lovely. I did have to wait a bit to actually get a seat to eat at Butt because I was waiting for my corrected order. I ended up getting a seat. I was really amazed by the freshness of the ingredients and how the fish did not taste fishy despite not having a marinade. The balance of flavors and textures was excellent: the sweet beets, the tangy red onions, creamy avocado, silky fish, earthy brown rice, and the freshness of the kale! The crispy toppings really elevated it too with both crunch and umami punches. The meal was super filling, satisfying, and felt really clean. ThisBowl is like a boujee Sweetgreen. I can't even believe those words are leaving my lips, but here we are. I wanted something clean and healthy after a mediocre workout, and had been recommended this place by a few trusted sources. During my initial experience in August here, it was a fast casual layout with minimal seating and an open kitchen concept as you can kind of see them making the bowls. Personally, this does not rate as my favorite option but it is definitely a good alternative. Fresh ingredients, price is a little higher, inside interior is interesting but not the cleanliness. They definitely get high traffic so the tables/benches are not the cleanest. In Australia, fishbowl is like their chipotle in terms of location availability. I would say quality of ingredients is better. Pricing is comparable but obviously a lot better given the strong US dollar to AUS dollar. Seating is not always readily available or really there but there is so much open public spaces/parks to eat. I do not think you can go wrong with what protein or toppings you want. Imo you don't have to drizzle a lot otherwise the spicy tanginess will be too overpowering. I chose half brown rice and half mixed leaves as the base. The salad bowl was very filling and I could split it into two meals. The portion, generous toppings and quality justify the steep price even though I still found it quite expensive for salad ( ~$18 per bowl). Funny story: they forgot my miso salmon lol I was shocked to find no protein in my bowl (and it wasn't even peak hour). They do give free glasses of water and no restroom (this may be a no brainer to a New Yorker, but being a tourist I thought I might as well note this.)
