Cannot say enough good things about Derek and Thomas Landscapes. We have been customers for a decade, but I was prompted to write this due to his above-and-beyond recently by saving my boxwoods. If you have them, you know how long they take to mature and ours is a LONG hedge because we're on a corner. It would have been devastating (and expensive) to lose them, but Derek noticed a blight we never would have noticed or known about, treated them as part of his regular yard service, and they are healthy now, and amazing. (He also helped our crepe myrtle avoid that bark scale that was going around the city's crepe myrtles last year!) His crew is efficient, thorough, and kind. I LOVE the way my yard looks when they've finished. He also put in our back patio years ago, and created a pretty "sitting wall" on one side of it to define the space. Love, love, love. read more

I have never left a review of any type in my life. I'm writing this one because my experience with Derek has been beyond horrible, and I would not want anyone else to go through what I've gone through. We first approached Derek b/c an acquaintance had him landscape their backyard, and we liked the results and wanted something similar. When we met him, it was clear that he is an extremely talented gardener and a highly creative landscape designer. His prices were high (and he quoted some materials costs that were obvious lies), but we were excited about his vision and agreed to move forward. We give him a deposit of 1/3 the budgeted cost and were expecting to start in several weeks. Three months went buy. After a month of silence, he gave us a story about a toothache. And then Covid. Etc etc. We'd go weeks without hearing from him, and eventually I thought we'd just be out the deposit (In hindsight, that would been preferable). But then he resurfaced, we had a great conversation and put some detail behind our plan, and agreed to move forward. We got part of the project done. He put in an flagstone patio that was uneven. He planted a bunch of plants, none of which were on our agreed upon plant list. Fortunately I work from home, so I was able to run out and stop his crew from making the most egregious mistakes, like concreting in fencing posts in the wrong location. We made our second payment, against my better judgement, with the understanding that he'd fix some of these issues. We tried to finish the project, but after he ignored our last email and set of text messages, we just thought he'd dropped us. But then the invoices started showing up. Invoices for work he never did. When we tried to communicate with him about this, his line was that if we wanted anything additional it would be "extra." And then the emails, each one nastier and more threatening than the last. No matter how calmly or rationally we attempt to communicate with Derek, his responses are always mean, insulting, and threatening. If you own a home in DC, chances are you've had some crummy experiences with a contractor. (And hopefully some good ones - we definitely have!) Derek is next level awful. I would recommend that everyone stay away from him. If you do end up working with him, you should definitely do what others have recommended and get everything documented in writing, in detail. I pray your experience isn't as awful as ours has been. read more

If you want a weeks-long runaround where a contractor asks you to do work so they don't have to, then this is the company for you. We never even made it a quote since they simply stopped responding despite attempt to connect via email, their portal, and text. Based on their reviews, this seems to be common with this company. warning ! i paid for 14 trees they all died he did replace them once. however they refussed to adreess what was killing them ( sitting water everytime time it rained)-(everytime) i paid him $24,000.00 for my landscapining ! they never pitched the water to the sewer on my property. no water ever touched the sewer rediculious! i now i paid $15,200.oo to fix there problem! however the contractor that re did the lawn now to pitch correct wanted $8800.00 more for trees which is to much for my buget now! stay away from d thomas landscaping! warning!!! read more

Seeing the design and maintenance Thomas landscapes performs on my neighbor's yard convinced me to get in touch with an estimate for our space. Derek was very responsive at first and we set up a day to meet. Emails to confirm the time and date went unanswered and, not surprisingly there was no meeting. Derek went above and beyond for us in Capitol Hill! Our project included a new brick patio with new drainage, moving an existing iron fence, and installing a new wood fence closer to our property line. Not only did Derek provide detailed plans and answer every question, but he was entirely transparent about the timeline (it shifted a few times due to some stretches of bad weather), and provided brilliant options to help us bring the project closer to our budget, which was completed on-time and as-expected. His crew was professional, tidy, and did the job right the first time. Most importantly for us, Derek offered to meet with our neighbors and provide a walkthrough of the project, helping us diplomatically navigate some tricky conversations about the new fence installation near the property line. I had called them last spring (2019) to give me a price for maintaining my lawn prior to my deployment. They came over to my property, looked at my yard and said they would get back to me on a price and contract for maintaining my lawn. They never got back to me so I had called them numerous times to follow up. All my calls were ignored. Furthermore I can never reach a person when I call the number. It was good that I found another company to take care of my lawn while I was out of the country on military deployment. read more

Pro: the laborers at Thomas Landscapes can do good work. Cons: management and the business side of this company are bad. The first review of Thomas Landscapes should have been a warning sign. Promises of calls will go unmet. Polite follow-up emails will be met with hostility. Sub-contractors will not articulate the scope of work. Good receipts and invoices are not automatic. And dealing with management leaves you wishing you picked a different company. read more

Derek and his crew are always doing amazing jobs. I could say that I'm a busy person and I like to see the front of my house in a good shape but I don't have time to cut the grass and stuff. So I'm sure the quality of landscaping and knowledge of flora is top-notch. But The billing is so sloppy that I cannot recommend unless you are happy to pay random bills that appear, just knowing that you have a nice garden. If you demand that bills tightly correspond to events in your yard, go elsewhere. My experience was a copy of the other reviewer's, Alycin's, experience. Horrific business communication, tardiness, unreliability, and overall unprofessional behavior. Simple questions regarding project completion will be responded to with harsh, emotional messages. The fact that the owner was more than 30 minutes late for our first consultation without a call, text or email until I repeated tried to get in touch to see if we were still meeting, should have been the first warning sign. Late to the majority of appointments following without notice. They will not proactively update you on the project unless you ask. And ask. And ask. Get everything in writing (or just don't hire them), because if you rely on their word you will not be met with results. Work is good, if you can handle the pain of doing business with them for much longer than anticipated, and are willing to risk your project not getting done if you ask "when will this be done?". Should have listened to my neighbors warning regarding their lack of communication and execution skills. Will be posting a flier to our community to red flag them. read more

I highly recommend staying away from Derek at Thomas Landscapes. As President of my small condominium association, I invited Derek over to provide an estimate on landscaping and leaf removal services. When Derek came over, I asked him to provide me a written, itemized cost estimate so that our condo association could decide what services were vital and which were not. As a new condo association, we did not have much money in reserves yet. Derek did not provide me with an itemized cost estimate and I had to continually go back to him and request additional information, which he did not provide. Since it was October and we needed leaf removal, I secured his ad hoc leaf removal service which he billed me for at the end of the month. Today I received a bill from Thomas Landscapes saying the condo association owes him additional money for leaf removal services performed in November! I emailed him and asked him to clarify the bill, but he insisted he never provided leaf removal services in October and provided me two dates when he provided the service in November. I checked all my email correspondence with him and I had no email contact with him in November. I called to speak with him about this and he was so rude that he told me to find another landscaping company. I would steer clear of this guy! read more
