Here's a very long overdue review for a great doctor. So here's a cool story for you.. A 22 year old goes swimming in a lake, gets weird bumps on her face, panics, goes to a doctor and doc says she must have some kind of bacteria, uses prescribed medicine and still looks horrible, freaks out because she can't be seen walking around like this forever, finds a dermatologist through yelp and makes a same day appointment with a really sweet lady on the phone, meets up with Dr. Urban and doc says, "Looks like you might have chickenpox..." Well. Shit. What kind of 22 year old gets chickenpox? But anyhoo- doc prescribes the right medicine and it all goes away smoothly, as smoothly as chickenpox can go away I mean (and by smoothly I mean that it sucked a lot) andddd Dr. Urban even calls to check up on me a couple days later. THANK YOU SO MUCH DOCTOR!! You saved my face. Dr. Urban is a very gentle and caring doctor! I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a dermatologist! I just recently started to go to Dr. Urban and I think he's a great Doctor. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I like how the appointments are short and to the point. It says a lot about his experience as a dermatologist. He doesn't waste your time! That's probably why he has more time available than most other derms! Also, I find that he is very knowledgeable about the things he suggests and prescribes. If you spend the time to ask him questions he'll answers very confidently - I love that! He's a very nice and calm doctor. He makes you feel comfortable. In fact, last time I saw him he remembered the little tid bits I had mentioned about myself the time before, which blew me away because I'm 29 and I don't even have a memory that good. Just goes to show how personable he is. Finally, his assistant is very nice too. I think she answered my calls after hours once -which I would never expect! She answered my questions every time I called and was never rude or short. One last thing - his office is filled with samples! I saw Dr. Urban for the first time a month ago for some dryness on my skin. He diagnosed it right away as eczema. He prescribed a hydrating cream and a steroid and it cleared up in a couple days. He also gave me a coupon for the prescription and free samples. He is also very friendly. I was a little nervous that I was able to get an appointment so quickly but he was great. The receptionist was very pleasant as well. If I have any other skin issues, I'll be sure to go back to Dr. Urban. read more

Dr. Urban is wonderful, very knowledgeable but I just tried to make an appointment and the phone number is no longer valid so I drove by the office and it's gone. I'm thinking Dr. Urban retired but I'm so shocked that he did not send out a letter to his patients to let them know. Now I'm stuck looking for a new dermatologist. I've been seeing Dr. Urban now for about a year and a half. A few years ago I started breaking out with adult acne on my cheeks. I never had that problem as a teenager so it was a little strange to me when I started breaking out. I tried a bunch of facial cleaning products, over the counter stuff but nothing could ever really get rid of it. It got pretty bad and annoying so I decided to scout around for a dermatologist. I had one before, but she wasn't quite as good and I constantly felt like she was just giving me the usual topical creams, retinoid stuff that didn't work for me, but she didn't care to listen and all she wanted was for me to constantly come back every 2 weeks to milk my insurance. Read some reviews and did some research and I narrowed it down to Dr. Urban and one other doc. The other doc was completely full and wasn't accepting new patients, so I gave Dr. Urban a shot. When I first met Dr. Urban, he told me that it would take time to get the results I wanted and I wouldn't see an improvement immediately. I'd have to be diligent in using the products he prescribed. I told him my only stipulation was that he not put me on accutane unless it was the only way I could get rid of the acne. Accutane was my super super last resort. I started noticing improvements by about 6 months. A year and a half later, I have no more new acne, the scars are fading away gradually, I've been weened off some of the medications and my skin is looking 100x better than it did before I saw Dr. Urban.. and he did it w/o the use of accutane. Yeah his office is small, yeah it's outdated, yeah the visits don't take more than 10 mins, but his exam rooms are clean and he gets the job done and that's all I care about. I'm able to schedule appointments with him when it works best for me and he sees me in a timely manner. I never have billing issues, scheduling issues, or anything! read more

I do not agree with the previous reviews. After reading the previous yelp reviews, I decided to go to Dr. Urban since most other dermatologists are booked for the whole month. I show him my problem and he looks at it.... for literally 3 minutes! He didn't inspect it or touch it or anything. He just prescribed me ointment. Then he said, "Okay, good luck. Hope you feel better," and walked out. He didn't ask me if I had any additional questions or anything...there wasn't a patient waiting for him outside to leave so abruptly either. He tried booking me the next day for another appt...most docs will wait a few days after medication. He was just trying to make money off me. What a scam artist. I went to another dermatologist a few days later since the ointment he prescribed didn't work. The dermatologist I went to a few days later was able to diagnose my problem correctly on the first visit. Avoid him. Go to a dermatologist that will diagnose your problem correctly. A good doctor will explain things thoroughly, answer your questions, and give you the time you deserve. I got none of the above from Dr. Urban. read more

I was calling around to look for a dermatologist because everyone seems to be booked until october, and Dr. Yeh wasn't even taking patients ): but it took several rings for them to answer. Then when the receptionist finally answers, she's totally talking to someone else and I'm waiting on the phone like uh... okay, is this some answering machine? what's going on? and she answers with a totally snobby attitude," HELLO?" (talk about rude!) & then I tell her I'm having skin allergies and that my doctor recommended me to see a dermatologist because it was skin related and she talks to me like I'm stupid "like uhh.. have you checked with a allergist? .. you should go look at the phone book or something." Just talking to her was enough, that gave me the impression that their customer service couldn't of been any better than hers. So I got off the phone & continued my searching, good riddance to this place. read more

I went to Dr. Urban when I broke out in some nasty, horrible rash and thought I had a necrotic skin-eating disease and thought I was going to die horribly (OK, some hyperbole here, but it WAS nasty business). I made an appointment with Dr. Urban, and he looked at me for about 10 seconds and told me I had encountered Poison Oak. He explained how it affected people and wrote me a few prescriptions. I followed up with him a week later and things were looking MUCH better. The initial appointment was maybe 15 minutes, and the second one couldn't have been more than 10. In both cases, the wait was less than five minutes. It's really nice to not spend an hour and a half at a doctor's office! I appreciate that Dr. Urban has been in practice for awhile; he has the experience to know what he's dealing with and he stays current with new drugs and technologies used in his field. I also like that he takes the time to listen to his patients and at no time did I feel rushed. He treated me like a person, not just another body going through a revolving door. As others have said, the office waiting area is small, and there is just one receptionist, but she's really nice. I've had to reschedule appointments a few times and she is very accommodating and has always been really pleasant about it. read more

I visited Dr. Urban despite the 1 negative feedback. It seemed to me that the negative feedback was based on a billing issue rather than a medical issue. So I took the chance. Dr. Urban seems to be an old fashion doctor. Although his office is small and out-dated (yes - they still have the typewriter!) , they were able to fit me in immediately. His demeanor was friendly, he examined my issue and he prescribed the least invasive treatment stating that we could do other things if this first approach did not work. It was an efficient appointment - not a lot of time spent waiting, not a lot of idle chatter. He answered all my questions, gave me the prescriptions and I was on my way. I don't yet know if the prescription will work but I would recommend him to others - especially those who prefer the traditional no-nonsense approach to medicine. read more

I have bacterial skin infections from trying some cosmetics at sophera & I am/was freaking out. He diagnosed really quickly but that's because he knew what was wrong with my skin right when I told him what happened. He prescribed me ointment/cream that automatically helped reducing the redness and then as soon as I came back, he wasn't satisfied with the result and described me a stronger medicine and ointment. He was kind enough to ask me if I had insurance to cover the price and he also gave me a coupon that was pretty useful. the receptionist lady was also super nice to give me a few tips and samples :) nice and professional people. they pick up the phone right when I called when other dermatologists in town either didn't take patients over the holiday or they just won't pick up the phone. Dr. Urban was providing me with treatment for other skin problems when he noticed a small lesion on my back. He suggested the lesion be biopsied and referred to Stanford for analysis. He was concerned the lesion was the beginning of a rare cancerous skin disease, cutaneous lymphoma. A local cancer specialist looked at the lesion and did not believe it was lymphoma but rather a noncancerous condition. The initial microscopic evaluation of the biopsy also failed to diagnose lymphoma. Dr. Urban was not satisfied. He continued to monitor the condition and several months later suggested a another biopsy and reevaluation at Stanford. This time the condition had progressed enough to be properly diagnosed as skin lymphoma. I under went extensive radiation treatment at Stanford and the condition was cured. Essentially without Dr. Urban's diligence my condition may have degenerated into full-blown lymphoma. Instead, I am a cancer survivor. I thank Dr. Urban for his skill and experience. As long as he is practicing he will be my family's dermatologist. read more

Thankfully, I told the receptionist that I currently had a prescription for biologicals, which she was nice enough (and honest enough) to say that Dr. Urban does not prescribe these as a blanket policy (not sure why). I have been going to Dr. Urban for years. He's a great guy and a old time Doc. He likes to use cheap home remedy type of treatments meant to save you money. He even gives you the coupons for (over the counter) stuff that you can get at the local Drug Store. I have gone to him with some weird stuff and was always amazed that all I really needed was tube of zinc oxide or a small sample of clobex cream that he has in the office. You can take as much samples as you want if your that cheap and don't want to go shopping. As for the Typewriter, Have you ever known of a typewriter not booting up or losing it's memory? Dr. Urban at one time had a much larger office near the San Jose Medical Center and closed it when the center closed. Down sizing, bad economy... you get the picture. Dr. Urban is a great guy, he likes to talk to his patients about all sorts of stuff. LC you are correct it takes him about 3 mins to diagnose because he has been a Doctor doing this for 40 plus years. Usually he will take a look prescribe and ask if there is anything else you want looked at.... if not he will usually engage in some sort of common current event that is going on in the news. He is a nice guy with a good practice. By the way LC his receptionist / Medical Assistant, She is nice as they come and has been with him for over 20 years dealing with dick's like LC. LC take your business elsewhere so the rest of us can be happy with Dr. Urban. LC you need a life or to get laid!? read more

I read the yelp reviews before I went to see this dr and they were pretty good, so I thought I'd make an apt with him for my son. I understand he has many years of experience, so with that being said, you would think he would have seen many children over the course of his practice. However, he didn't seem like he knew how to deal with a child at all. I noticed he seemed rather annoyed actually. He did not put my son at ease, which most dr's do when they have a child as a patient. We won't be returning for our follow up visit. read more

Dr Urban is a very smart and kind old school Dr. Helped me take care of some blemishes quickly and has lovely bedside manner.

Dr Urban is a good doctor and really nice man. He is to the point, but also very personable. During the several visits that I have had with him he is very open to answering any questions I have about treatment, etc and even adjusted the medication for my acne when I asked about other options, etc. I appreciate his sincerity, and his willingness to answer questions and address concerns. His office is a bit old fashioned, and they only take check or cash which can be a hassle, but I have never had any problems there. The receptionist is very friendly and accommodating as well. I read the reviews and just met Dr. Urban to look at my freckles - lots of them! My husband is a patient and really likes him. He is an old fashioned, experienced, no nonsense type of MD. His office is frugal, but his receptionist was very pleasant. He seems to me, to be the type of Doctor that will listen to relevant info you share. During our conversation, he immediately checked on something online during our discussion and said he would do more checking. He didn't prescribe but he acted immediately on some freckles on our first visit. Choosing your MD is like choosing a desert - its all about what you like. If there aren't enough 'likes', then choose something else! I think he is a good MD. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Urban for years - have recommended him to my parents and now they go, as well. We all really like him. He is kind, calm and brief but thorough. His assistant is great, as well. Even though I only go in once every 6-12 months for check-ups, she always remembers me and is friendly and helpful. He has also seen my husband and our entire family truly likes him. My insurance changed at one point and I couldn't see him for a few years but now am able to go back. Very happy about that! To be quite honest he seems very confused and does not change his diagnosis once it has been made, even if there is evidence that the skin condition may be something else. Also he is a little harsh when it comes to "breaking the news," he made me very worried about my skin conditon and led me to believe it was much more serious than it was. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Urban's for a number of years and never ever had a problem with him or his front office. Both are as professional and caring has can be found anywhere within the healthcare system. My original contact with Dr. Urban was during my first year at San Jose State University and his office, at that time, was very close to the now closed San Jose Hospital. As a working student, I didn't have much in the way of money so he didn't charge me anything for my first two visits, diagnosis and one followup visit for what turned out to be a lifelong chronic eczema on my hands. Over the years Dr. Urban has always been willing to see me on short notice and office visits have always been easy and quick to make. Actual office diagnosis has been short, professional and very informative ...his approach to the practice of Dermatology is "Old School" in the sense that his primary concern is the helpful and professional treatment of the patient. If your coming to his office for "biological" remedies that may or may not be legitimate, then you've come to the wrong office. If your coming for help and the latest up to date and professional, traditional medical, remedies then you've come to the right place. Snake oil and attitude will not be found at this office anytime. read more
