This is one of two places that take reservations downtown and was near the festival we were attending at Riverside Park. We arrived approximately 15 minutes before our reservations and were seated immediately in the sparsely filled restaurant. Their air conditioning was refreshing after a long day in the sun. Their menu has a Louisiana flair, so I ordered the chicken-and-sausage gumbo and had their étouffée as my main course. The dishes are very similar in content, except that the étouffée included crawfish and shrimp and came with two pieces of bread. Both were very good, but we're a little light on the Cajun spices. I enjoyed a soft parade pint of beer from their vast craft beer and wine menu. Others in my party of five enjoyed their salad with a protein pizza and a cheeseburger. They have low-top, high-top, booth, and bar seating, along with outdoor patio seating. Full bar. The interior has a knotty wood finish with a somewhat industrial feel. The building used to hold Civil War barracks. Clean restrooms. Excellent service. Pricey. Parking can be difficult. They have posted 3% surcharge fee that references fast-rising expenses. I have now been here several times... and love the patio for the dog-friendly atmosphere, the lunch specials are wonderful, and the service kind. The main issue I have at this point is that they change 3% for a "service fee". It doesn't go to the server, no. It goes to the business because food prices are high? That's just hard to swallow... I really don't mind you charging me a credit card service fee, because I know those eat into the business bottom line. But if I pay cash, and the price of the food is already pretty high... and then you want to change me another 3%, just because? I just find that a little ridiculous. read more

Today was my first visit here and its such a cute place. I we had quite a large group and they served our group promptly and efficiently. I was torn by the salmon sandwich and chicken and waffles, but I went with the sandwich. Now that they've introduced brunch I do appreciate this place a little more! I wasn't as impressed with their dinner menu but I had also been here right when they opened a while back. Their brunch was great! Nice drinks, nice options for sweet and savory dishes plus their regular menu was also available. This place offers both outside and inside dinning. Located in an old remodeled "downtown building". They offer a full bar with plenty of seating and several TVs around the bar. They also have a large amount of dining room seating as well. It is very clean and very well kept and decorated. The staff is nice however the culture seems to be very less than ambitious. Our food arrived in a timely fashion and as ordered. Our waitress made sure we had what we needed but didn't see her again for 20 minutes or so. The food was excellent! The food is pretty delicious and flavorful (highly recommend trying the Louisiana shrimp and the Brussels are some of the best I've had.) I do not recommend Thompson and Co. for special event reservations. I reserved a table for 7 a few months in advance for a meal following a college graduation today. I called the day before to ask about adding one more person to my reservation and I was told the restaurant was "booked beyond belief". I said ok, no problem! Just thought I would check. Well, we arrived for our reservation to find there were 2 additional open chairs at the table they had set up for us, in addition to several open tables scattered throughout the restaurant. I guess they didn't want the extra business. The next problem we had was the drink menu. We were given a drink menu with several different specials of the day. Three guests in my group excitedly ordered the brunch Bloody Marys-the fancy type with all of the extra toppings. The server came out with three standard Bloody Marys without any explanation. When I asked, she told me the special Bloody Marys "aren't available for the graduation reservations". I have never heard of such a thing! I didn't want to make a scene though, so we quietly accepted the drinks. Finally, Thompson and Co. has a delicious brunch food menu, which we were not provided with at the table when we sat down, and we were there during their advertised brunch hours. Well, guess what!? Graduation reservations can't have the brunch menu according to the server. What a joke! We will not be going back and I don't recommend this restaurant for a special occasion. If the manager or the website does not tell you this upon booking, then I feel they are falsely advertising their menu and you can have a much better meal going somewhere else, especially if you're looking for brunch. read more

I want to love Thompson & Co, but every time I go something is just "off". They have a "secret" vegetarian/vegan menu that I've never received without asking. Always off putting, as if you don't know about it why would you ask. The vegan pizza is pretty good, but that is really the only vegan option. I typically sit at the bar and the service ALWAYS starts off good and then goes downhill. Four out of five times I've had to track someone down for the bill or another drink. If you're a meat eater and not in a rush, it's a cool place to stop, but otherwise it's a great stop for drinks (personally prefer MASH, though, nextdoor, but their hours are weird). read more

They have excellent fried chicken. I normally don't order chicken at a restaurant because we can make that at home, but this is my go-to here. We always start with skillet cornbread, which is scrumptious! Their macaroni and cheese is some of the best I've ever had. It's super cheesy, and in a good way! I restrained myself from stealing my daughter's leftovers the next day. My daughter enjoyed the chicken and sausage gumbo, even with the bit of kick it has. My mother-in-law ordered a salmon sandwich because she didn't want a large meal. She raved about how perfectly cooked it was and the seasoning being just right. I admit to being disappointed in the bramble I got today because it was absolutely nothing like the blackberry bramble I got a year ago, but it tasted ok. I wouldn't order it again unless I knew I was getting the version I got last time, pictured below. It is very loud in here when it's busy, so if that bothers you, go early or sit outside in warmer months. Outdoor seating is out front on what I guess you'd call their porch. I really enjoyed this place. We went in on a Friday night and were seated right away in a booth. We had 3 appetizers: the crab dip (which everyone at my table enjoyed. Maybe I didn't give it a real try but it was just ok to me). The Brussels sprouts were good; Cooked well and seasoned well. Also whatever that shrimp appetizer is... TRY IT! 10/10 Minus one star because the couple we were with had some issues with the cocktails they were trying to order. My tip is to just order something straight or something off the menu. Other than that, the food is great!! My husband loves the fried chicken. It's off the bone. I had the shrimp étouffée. Another 10/10. I would definitely recommend giving them a try. read more

We chose this restaurant today since all of us crave for some southern food, stopped by here today for dinner and was totally not impressed. You have to cook a good gumbo for a southern restaurant, the gumbo had rice that was hard in the middle (topical for rice that was under cooked) and the soup tastes like it's straight out of a can. Beer is also over priced. $5 beer goes for $7.50 here. Only good thing is the building is nice and the location is good. I gave it a 3 star because that how the food tastes like. Fun concept infused with Southern classics like shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, skillet cornbread, etouffee, etc as well as your standard bar fare like pizzas, sandwiches, salads. We walked in on a Sunday around 1pm and were immediately seated. We could order from their regular menu or Sunday brunch menu. I got a Bloody Mary off the brunch cocktail list, and the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich with mixed greens. My husband got their Pimento Bacon Burger with fries. All were tasty! The Bloody Mary was unique, topped with candied bacon, blackened shrimp, andouille sausage, pickles, cheese, an olive and a Cajun spice rim. Wow! All the garnishes were great, the shrimp and sausage especially fantastic. The drink itself was ok - a little watery and could have had more kick. The Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich was good! Not very hot at all in my opinion. The chicken is pounded thin and had a nice crisp. Loved the pickles and slaw. The bun was good too, but very buttery/oily (so much so that a little grease was pooling on my plate) and I ended up taking the bun off halfway through. The side of greens was simple but did the trick. Also tried a bite of my husband's burger and it was good too! Seemed like a nice place to go for a super casual weekend meal AND also a nice spot for after church or an event. There were people there in sweatshirts as well as jackets and ties. Overall just a welcoming and approachable environment. Located in Ypsilanti's historic depot town, in apparently an old civil war era building! The restaurant business since the Post War era, is either all about current trends, or unique themes that are popular at the moment when they were conceived and built. Now, if you could hop into a time machine and go back to America during the "War Between The States" in the 1860s, you would find the food much different from what you're used to today. However, you don't need a time machine, but a modern conveyance like an automobile, bicycle or a transit bus will do nicely to transport you to Ypsilanti's historic Depot Town. Built in 1861, the Thompson Building has a long history in the Ypsilanti community, that was almost destroyed by a multi-alarm fire in 2009. The community rallied to save what remained of the 10,000 square ft. building that once housed Civil War troops from the Michigan 14th, and including the first Michigan Colored Infantry division. In fact, part of the building was once occupied by the Ypsilanti Volunteer Fire Department in the 1870s - 1890s. Sadly, as time progressed in the late 20th Century, the venerable building fell into disrepair, and had been allowed to badly deteriorate since it's closure in 1950. I decided to meet my long-time Kevin here for dinner around two weeks ago at this establishment. I had read the reviews and decided to give this restaurant a try. I mean anyplace that serves cornbread can't be all bad, can they? When you walk in the front door, you immediately feel the history come to life at Thompson & Co. It's like stepping back into time. The décor is really nice and clean. The best part is that you really get a feel for what life must have been like in Depot Town in the 1860s, as the menu entrées really reflect this vibe very nicely. I decided to order "Pan-Seared Salmon" with "Loaded Redskin Mash" and "Mac and Cheese." We started off with some tasty cornbread. Then I was a little skeptical at first when the meal was served with the sides in tin cups, but it actually tasted very delicious. Likewise, the salmon was nicely cooked and flavorful. The service was first-was first rate and Julie did an excellent job taking care of Kevin and I. She was there to take our orders, refill our drinks, and when Kevin who ordered a "Brisket Pizza" told her that once it cooled down it was too dry. The manager came over and talked with us, and everything was great after that. So if you want to try a dinning experience with some great craft cocktails, beer and wine, then you will love this place. read more

I like Thompson & Co. They are a bit on the pricier side but they've been pretty consistent. They have the biggest booths I've ever seen. My only suggestion would be making them cushioned. That would make them much more enjoyable. I feel like they have some unique dishes that you may be hesitant to try but are happy you did in the end. This visit, I had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. It definitely packs a punch. It's a nice size and seasoned really well. The fries that come with it are a very plentiful portion. My dining mate had the Cajun pasta and really enjoyed it too! I honestly don't think I've had a bad meal here so if you're in the area, it's definitely worth checking out. read more

Definitely want to go back and try out more of the menu. Kind of noisy inside but cool. For killer cocktails, hit up MASH next door. It's open inside of Thompson and Co but you can't order directly from MASH inside the restaurant. After having cocktails at MASH, ordering more cocktails when we were eating from the restaurant bar was kind of disappointing. Just different which I think is the point, so we stick with beer and after dinner walked back over to MASH for another cocktail. read more

We went during happy hour (I think it's from 4-6pm), sat in their deck in the nice weather for a quick drink and had some apps! During happy hour, it's $2 off wine and beer and $4 off the apps which they call Rations. The brussel sprouts were sweet (description does mention jalapeño honey- it's not hot/spicy at all, just sweet) which I don't prefer (I don't care for sweet veggies). Everyone seemed to enjoy the seafood spinach dip which comes with slices of bread. The cornbread that people raved about in past reviews was only so-so in my opinion but the super spicy jalapeño sauce (it comes on the side) helped. The service was very pleasant and overall good. I've heard great things about Thompson & Co- we will have to try some main dishes next time!! Then I had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. My boyfriend had the Dagwood sandwich with fries and added smoked mozzarella. Everything was so fresh and tasted amazing. We had the seasonal cherry limeade alcoholic drink, we loved and would definitely order again. Our first experience was a five star experience! We were so pleased we visited again the following week. This second experience was very lackluster. The service was just okay, the food was not fresh or quit as flavorful as the first visit. It was busy the second visit so maybe they're making big batches of food and having it siWe ordered all the same food as the first visit. The second visit brought the stars down...I would give 3.5 stars if I could. I would go again because of how good I know the food can be. TLDR: If you're celiac, take this place off your list. Took a very long time for our server to come. Then took a very long time for water to arrive. Ordered the brisket sandwich, and substituted gluten free bun. Subbed mashed potatoes for fries, since the fries aren't gluten free (plus they were out of fries, who runs out of fries?). Food came quickly, but they brought mine to the wrong table and had to remake it. This place has been open for at least a year, but in a half-full restaurant, the servers were running around like it was crazy busy. Their server sections were spread throughout the restaurant and on the patio. Totally inefficient arrangement. Food came (again) but took a ridiculously long time. The mashed potatoes weren't bad. The brisket sandwich was basically an inch-thick hunk of brisket. It was like eating a steak sandwich or something. It wasn't bad tasting, but weird to have to muscle through each bite of a brisket sandwich. Bill comes, and surprise! The upcharge for a gluten free bun was $1.50, and the upcharge for switching to mashed potatoes from fries (even though I said it was for an allergy and they were OUT of fries) was $3.75. Neither of these upcharges were on the menu, nor mentioned by the server when ordering. The prices at Thompson & Co (in Ypsilanti) are already as high as Ann Arbor restaurants. If you're eating gluten free, prepare to pay even more. After paying, I told the manager that they should consider not upcharging for allergies. She looked at me confused and said, "Heard."
