I would recommend... but I would also say to consider a few things if you're funny about your furniture, flooring and health being protected (especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic). I'll start with the good points... then mention the areas of concern/ areas for improvement. They are friendly & fast! They moved me from a 3 story townhome to a 3rd floor apartment (with an elevator) in about 6.5 hours. Including travel time. I have an oversize sectional that initially the crew didn't think they could get into my apartment. Thanks to the crew's critical thinking and strategic maneuvering... they were able to get my oversized sectional in. The crew was very polite - asked were items should be placed while unloading. They even took my boxes from previous deliveries that were left in my apartment out to the dumpster for me. Having said all that, I still had some concerns and disappointments. Before my move, they send someone to your home to do a visual inspection and then write up a quote. My quote included that my furniture would be shrink wrapped (for a fee based). That did not happen on the day of my move - not because I was unwilling to pay. I asked why and was told my furniture would be wrapped with a furniture blanket once in the Truck. Based on some scratches and chipped paint on some of my furniture ... it makes me wonder if my furniture was even wrapped in the truck? Although my sectional was oversized, paint did rub off on the fabric which they did there best to dust off. In prior moves, my furniture was wrapped prior to even being moved from my home to the moving truck. But, with this move I never saw my furniture protected. Another disappointment was that during my quote I was told that the crew would lay down runners to protect my carpet. This never happened. In fact the runners I purchased (for my own use) were removed by the movers, as they said it was in the way. Which is very possible. But, you'd think that if the runner was in the way everyone would have worn booties over their shoes to protect my newly installed carpet. This was not the case either. Finally, during my in person inspection/quote I asked about the crew wearing masks. I mentioned that I read previous reviews were people spoke about the moving crew refusing to wear masks. He told me flat out - the crew does not wear masks. It's difficult for them to breath while moving. Ok, fine. I'm not going to challenge that. I've never had to exert myself like that while wearing a mask.... so I took their word on it. I was also told that if it would be a problem, they could refer me to someone else. Knowing that I couldn't risk pushing my move out to a later date I went with them. I did tell the Rep from Thompson Movers that I would be in my car while they moved me out and I would stay out of their way while they moved me in. He said that's what most people do and if they need me they would text me or call me from their cell phone. And if they had to speak to me in person they would put a mask on. That sounded doable. But, it didn't happen that way. From the moment the movers arrived (prior to exerting themselves) to the very end - they never wore a mask. Not even when speaking with me. There was no 6 feet of distance - ever. I assumed that whatever was discussed during the initial inspection/ quote would have been communicated to my moving crew. Guess not. From the moment the crew arrived I was asked to come inside the house to give them a tour. Again - this did not cause for exerting oneself, and this did cause for speaking inside of a home & no mask was worn by the crew. Once arriving to the new location, again I understand that while moving they don't wear a mask. But, what happens when while unloading and moving items one of the movers sneezes within 2 feet of you??? We're living in the time of COVID-19. You can't sneeze within 2 feet of people without a mask on!! I know it wasn't done intentionally. But it was done. Once again, I was attempting to keep my distance while hanging clothes up in my walk in closet. Here comes one of the movers needing to move an item in the walk-in closet and there goes the sneeze. SMH. I would still recommend them to others... I would just tell them my experience and tell them to wrap their furniture themselves in the event the movers don't do it... as well as to laydown cardboard or something on their floors in the event the movers don't and to tell the movers up front to call or text you if they need to contact you during the move vs speaking to you face to face if they are not going to wear a mask while speaking to you. It's understandable if they don't want to wear one while moving. But, while in your presence to communicate with you they really should per CDC Guidelines. read more

Moving can be a real hassle, but these guys really made it hassle-free. Please note that an estimate isn't the set price. It seems as though someone is complaining because the final total wasn't the same price as the estimate. They even tell you it's by the hour and other factors. If you're telling them you have less things thinking you're going to get it cheaper, you're cheating yourself and being a jerk for leaving a bad review. More stuff = more packing = more time = more money. Be honest with yourself and the company. John DeMaso did the estimate and was very thorough, and answered every question I had about the moving process. The movers were super friendly, prompt, and really hard working -- they really hustled their butts off! It wasn't like they were trying to milk the clock so I'd have to pay more. I didn't have any damaged items, and they packed things very well. I really do think their price is worth it because they're so meticulous. As you can read, I have nothing but good things to say... If there were ten stars available I would rate Thompson Movers TWENTY! I initially got three estimates, all from local movers who were recommended by friends. One mover refused to come to our home to give an estimate and just quoted an hourly rate. Another recommended mover was very professional but there was a cost discrepancy of almost one thousand dollars compared to Thompson Movers so that made our decision obvious. We had to change our moving date several times due to our buyer's financial issues. Each time I called, I was greeted by Patrick who was very cordial and understanding. He even called a couple weeks before our scheduled date to inquire if there were any further changes because their schedule was getting very crowded. We certainly appreciated his concern. We moved in two phases and each time the four young men worked nonstop with obvious team effort. They were very professional, courteous and friendly. They made sure everything was in the proper place before they left-- not one item was damaged. In addition, they completed each move ahead of the estimated time which resulted in a cost reduction....very impressive. These guys were recommended by my real estate agent, they were terrific. The estimate was spot on, no "gotcha's" or additional charges after reviewing what we had to move. We moved out of Illinois (who isn't?) three states away. Two semi trailer trucks moved the contents of a 3400 square foot house to a 3100 square foot house, all arrived on time, nothing broken, nothing missing. The movers were professional, efficient, and delivered on everything they said they would do. They even moved my two motorcycles which arrived in perfect shape. (Several of the movers owned motorcycles themselves, so they knew what they were doing) Note that the movers load your stuff and then are the same movers that go to the new location and unload your stuff. They don't use locals to unload as some moving companies do, which can provide mixed results. Pat even helped source moving boxes for us while we were still packing. If I move again, they'll be the first call I make. I can't recommend them enough. read more

The man with whom I spoke on the phone was very personable and seemingly knowledgeable. I was moving a few pieces of my mother's furniture to her assisted living apartment. We agreed a large truck and team were unnecessary. Two men and a smaller truck was all that was necessary. The first problem was that the men came not wearing masks since this was early February Covid was a large concern and vaccines were not readily available. I quickly grabbed two masks and asked that they put them on. "We don't wear masks when we move." I had postponed moving my 93 year old mother to an assisted living facility for a year because of Covid. I had kept her environment free of Covid since the beginning of the Pandemic now two movers are telling me they're not wearing masks. They gave me an ultimatum either move without masks or reschedule with a team that would wear them. I responded that I would be rescheduling. They walked out. I called the office. The two movers came back in and said they would wear the masks. The moving proceeded. I had told them which pieces of furniture were being moved. They loaded the truck and when the were almost finished my daughter and I pulled my car by the truck so they could follow me to the residence. Instead of following me they go in opposite direction. I thought they were using a different exit from the subdivision. I was at the assisted living residence for nearly a half hour before they arrived. Was that my punishment for the masks? They unloaded the furniture and I was having it placed appropriately. The last piece, the loveseat, had not yet been removed. The manager of the facility shouted out the door asking where the loveseat was. They didn't bring it! By this time I was so disgusted, I had my husband and brother bring it over. I thought I was getting a reputable moving company with Thompson. It was a small move, a short distance. Can you imagine a whole house move cross country? My children did a better job moving the remaining furniture out of the house than Thompson's did with the few pieces they brought. Never again. read more

I see a lot of good reviews on here for this place and I am sure most people get a good experience from here after paying a pretty penny or perhaps not, maybe my girlfriend was just discriminated against. Well anyway, the story goes like this. My girlfriend was looking to hire some movers to move a few furniture items. To be exact they were a couch (not a reclining couch or anything real big and heavy), a queen size bed, a twin size bed, a dresser (and no, not a momoth sized dresser), and maybe some boxes out of her three bedroom apartment. The bottom line is this was to be a small job that would take 2 maybe 3 hours at most, but more than likely just two hours. The deal is supposed to be $115 for 2 movers and a truck included, which is what my girlfriend wanted. There was absolutely no need for anymore than 2 movers for this simple job; however, the guy named John over at Thompson was telling her she needed 5 freakin movers! Are you kidding me!? Her stairs are not brutal and she lives on the second floor and she only needed a few items moved and if that did not take long she would have had some other items moved as long as it was $300 or under total, but this freakin guy said 5 movers right off the bat at $195 an hour! He did offer to come out to check on her place before moving day and give an estimate based upon what he saw, which was very nice of them to do. We figured he would come out and see for himself that this is an easy job for movers. When John arrived he was a little arrogant and walked about in her apartment like he owned the place. He plopped right down on her couch without asking her even though her purse and other items where right there, he almost sat on her stuff and said nothing. He then fired off a horrifyingly rediculous estimate of $475.00 for the job! He then said part of the reason they cost is their reputation blah blah blah! But on the estimate sheet he wrote $457, which I have attached. I blanked out her personal info, but as you can see the job was from Chicago Ridge to Oak Lawn which was a two mile job. And you can see from the second page I took, he did write down that small list of items she wanted moved. So how the hell did this joker come up with $457!? LOL! What a joke! It is clear to me he was trying to take advantage of a single mother. This is apparent by the way his mannerisms in her apartment were and the lack of respect and overcharging her and he did not even explain all the charges. The problem is HE is one that declared 5 movers were needed not her. HE declared that 3 hours were needed, not her. Most other moving companies let the customer decide how many movers or hours. He never, ever explained why 5 damn movers were needed! I bet if I was actually present at this time things would have been a little different. I have no evidence of that but it seems apparent that, that is what happened, take advantage of the single woman, just like a sleezy car salesman. Whether he was trying to take advantage of her or not, the rate was still appalling and his lack of explanations was rediculous! She ended up turning down the service, and hired a company that charged $255 for 3 movers. And no, the one she hired was not a low rate B.S. company, they were friendly people and worked with her. Not only that, no other estimates she got come over close to $400 even! The highest she was quoted was $302.00 for about 5 other places. I am sure most people have good experiences here, but we did not, and I want to put the word out to watch these guys and do not fall for their crap. Maybe it was just John that is full of it, whatever, I do not care an attempt at ripping us off was made and I am not happy! I wish I could have moved this stuff myself but I needed one other person but no one was available, so we counted on movers and did not expect to nearly be ripped! She even told John I was going to be moving the majority of the stuff myself, she mainly just needed the two person items moved, and he still fires off $475, or $457, whatever, either rate is crap! ******************UPDATE********************** So our moving day came on April 4th and we used the moving service we selected besides these jokers. They had originally quoted us $255. Well we decided since I had to unload my apartment and we did not want my girlfriend to be overburdened, we decided to have them move extra boxes and furniture which was more than twice what we told John at Thompson we had to move. The total ended up being $340.00 after all taxes etc..... As you can see with even more work then we told John, this other company still charged way less than John's crazy quote. I think I have proven that John tried to rip my girlfriend off, and I do not take that lightly. I would not recommend this Thompson movers to anyone.
