I was scheduled to arrive in Chicago with a truck full of boxes and furniture and needed to move into a second floor walk-up. I had located Woods and Sons Moving Services online and hoped they could help me in getting my belongings safely into my new place. Suffice it to say my expectations were exceeded. Vance's communication pre-move was reliable (he called when he said he would) and the move itself was seamless. He and his team arrived as promised (early, in fact) and ready to go. The movers were neat, courteous and friendly, and they not only helped with the logistics of managing the move, but they also made quick, efficient work of it. A rule of thumb regarding moving that I often share with friends and family is that they shouldn't be surprised if at least one item breaks during the move. Well, Woods and Sons Movers shot that theory down as everything arrived intact, nothing was broken and items were carefully placed. Finally, Vance made sure that the moving truck was empty and left clean, leaving one less thing I needed to be concerned with when returning the truck. Vance is a life-saver! I had scheduled a move with Aaron Bros. movers and they cancelled on me the SAME DAY(my lease was ending the next day)! I'm so lucky I called Vance when that happened. He immediately answered and told me he could be there in a few hours. I was not physically there but he kept in touch and texted me photos to show the empty space. He took all my belongings to a storage facility. He even threw out trash, went through every drawer/cabinet and made sure there wasn't a single item left. I cannot recommend him highly enough!! I moved from Edgewater to Logan Square in Chicago, and as a single woman it was so nice to have someone like Vance in my corner. Vance, the owner, sounds like a nice enough guy. I wouldn't know if he's any good as a mover though. I verified my booking with him midway through the week and he told me he had put me down for the week prior. Simple mistake - no harm done. He then called me the day of, 30 mins before arrival time, to tell me that half of his guys didn't show up and that the truck was broken down. He apologized and stated that he "dreaded making the call". He then said he'd make some calls to see what he can do - which I assume he did. He finally called me back to tell me that "things happen", and to get on Craigslist and find a new mover. I did not hear from him after that. read more

I have used them a couple of times (3). The first move was great and only took 5 hours total to move from Uptown to Downtown. They were ghetto, so it was a bit embarrassing but they got the job done. During the second move, they snap a chord to my surround sound. The reason I knew they did it was right before they arrived, I was on the phone with Best Buy who was going to install my tv and system so I looked to make sure I had all parts and it was fine. He was also short staffed and had 1 person to help him. Vance is older, so he stood at the top of the stairs while the 1 helper moved everything. It took 9 hours from Downtown to Lincoln Park. Vance had given me a quote and he only takes cash so I pulled out a little extra, just in case. That was not enough for what should have taken 4 hours like last time but instead was 9 hours. I was supposed to drop off the rest a few days later but I fell down a flight of stairs and was bed ridden. Vance said we could "split" the cost of my sound bar which was $80 so I had the person taking care of me leave $40 outside which he picked up. Also, during the second move, his employee asked for my number and said he doesn't have a lot of friends so I gave him my number to be nice. Third move. Since I had fallen down the stairs and was going to have surgery, I asked if Vance could move my bed from upstairs to downstairs. He said it's a 2 hour minimum of $200. It took them 45 minutes which is fine. However, he said if I could find cheaper to call someone else from Craigslist. I asked the guy who had worked for him if he could do it. He said he would do it for $100. Shortly after I agreed, I thought I really should be giving Vance the money so I said no. He texted me all morning saying he was coming to my house no matter what. He started calling obsessively as well. He even took photos of my front door when he arrived. I called Vance and was honest. Vance called this guy and the guy never called me again and Vance moved my bed. After he moved my bed, I sent a text asking where the extension chord was. He called and said he used his own. Ok, fine. I couldn't walk upstairs to see where it was. I called Vance for my next move and he said I'm on a "do not move" list that his employees created. He is the owner as well so this does not make sense. He said my text asking where the extension chord was the last time, was accusing him of stealing. I explained I had no way to go upstairs and check. I wasn't accusing him. He said by leaving the $40 outside for him in an envelope was treating him like a dog and I should have come to the door. How? I COULD NOT WALK. He said the chord he went half on was never broken (yet you agreed to go half?). And he said I went behind his back to try and hire his employees. I explained that I was trying to be nice and when I realized how that could look to him, I gave him my business and shut that down. I would never intentionally be rude or disrespectful to anyone. He moved me after that because I thought he understood that. So, now it's a week or two since we talked about this move. He told me to rent a truck which I have. And now he said to go on Craigslist and get 2 movers. I have no control over how long he takes to move or if he or his workers break something. I did have control over giving my number out which I apologized for. However, why are you hiring hoodlums? He told me "that guy is not one to mess with. I wouldn't fight him." The same one who was sending me pictures of my house, while outside of my house when I asked him not to come. Also, don't you dare say Vance or his workers did anything wrong. It's ALWAYS the customers fault. If you're moving to a classy area, respectful area, and one that you do not want to be embarrassed in, don't use them. They cuss and spit and talk crazy to people. I learned that when I moved downtown, however, they're cheap. If you don't want things broken, don't use them. If you don't want known felons moving your stuff, knowing your apartment set up and what you have, don't use him. If you want a reliable company, do not use them. I'm sure half of the workers put those good reviews in. Please beware. If you have to go cheap and can handle the rest, use them. I needed to go cheap but I see the headache it has cost me. I only have 1 star at all so that I could post the review. Otherwise, they would have received 0 stars. Update: As soon as I posted this review, Vance called me yelling and telling me to take it down and that his staff called him. He said I tried to cheat him which I did not. I don't believe someone who tries to cheat someone would openly review their own actions in the scenario as I did. I only told my truth so take it for what it's worth to you as a customer. Even better news is, I got a call that I got the apartment I actually wanted so I'm moving back downtown and I've secured movers to move this week instead of Feb. This was my first experience with hiring movers. I had so much anxiety going into the process I panicked leading up to my move out date. Not only was I able to find a Black owned moving company, the service they gave was as if I had hired my relatives to move my things. In addition to being reasonably priced, they were on time and handled my belongings with the utmost care. They were also very communicative, respectful and efficient. They were really careful not to scratch up my old or new walls, and they even set up my bed frame for me before they left. As a Black woman who lives alone, this level of service means a whole lot. Nice people friendly over all, BUT a few things I was original quoted for 2 hours, that did not happen! Fine things happen, it ended up taking 5 hours. It appeared that the movers were moving rather slowly. There was no apology or acknowledgement of the how long they were taking. At the end the mover which I think was the owners tells the other mover " yea she left us no tip" that's was highly unprofessional, and I did it was just a small amount. Which I only did because of how long they were taking, 5 hours to move out of a 1 bedroom and initially you said 2 hours. Guys you have to do better with quotes and figuring these things out! Terrible. Just terrible. Use another more reputable company if you know what's good for you. This is your intuition speaking! I had a 2-part move. Hired these guys after reading all of the glowing reviews here on Yelp. What a NIGHTMARE my move turned out to be. The 1st part of my move was from one location to a storage facility. Vance and his worker showed up on time (in fact, they were early, which was nice). They came in and moved quickly to get my items onto the truck. When it came to my bed, Vance suggested that it be dismantled for ease of transport. Since the bed is so easy to assemble, I did not mind, so I said ok. Vance dismantled the bed himself; I watched him as I was moving about here and there in the apt. They moved the rest of my items onto the truck and even offered to give me a lift to the destination, which I obliged. On the way to the destination Vance had to stop for gas. He asked that I pay the cashier $20 of the fee he was charging (I thought this was pretty unprofessional, frankly, but whatever). I paid the cashier and we were back on our way. We get to the destination and the guys quickly unload my items and get them situated in the storage unit. We go our separate ways - the plan being for them to perform part 2 of the move the following weekend. I was so happy with the speed with which they worked that I left a $50 tip and a glowing review here on Yelp. My granny always told me: "never count your chickens before they hatch," and that was precisely what I was doing in leaving a big tip and glowing review on Yelp before ever seeing the move through to completion. Fast fw to pt 2 of the move. Oh what a difference a day makes. I text Vance a few days later to lock in the date and time for pt 2. He seemed a little shifty about his availability. He claimed that he was booked up, but that he could possibly do it later in the afternoon that coming Saturday, if no other moving company could. He suggested I call around to find someone else. I looked and eventually found someone else. The new moving company seemed a little shaky, but it was my only option. I booked them. Later the next day Vance calls and says that he had a cancellation and can complete pt 2 of my move after all. I book with Vance and cancel with the other company. Day of the move, pt 2. Vance is already there ready to roll. I let them in and they commence loading up. They got everything onto the truck just as quickly as the last time. We all load up into the truck and head off for the final destination. We get to there (a 3rd floor apt) and discover that there is a bed that needs to be moved to the basement. Vance and his worker move the bed without complaint, which was super sweet of them. The worker gets my bed into the apt and commences assembling the bed. They finish up and the worker jets. This time I left a $65 tip, bc again, everything seems fine from appearances, and they moved quickly. We say our ta-ta's. Fast fw to later that afternoon. I get back and unpack; I am POOPED. I sat down on my bed and it sunk in immediately and slid across the floor a little. Wait, what? This is a BRAND NEW bed I purchased in October; how in TF is it sunken in? It was perfectly fine prior to the move. Now I'm afraid (bc it's a platform bed) that the wooden slats holding the mattress might give in. I lift the mattress off the bed. I discover immediately that the bed was SLAPPED together in the most haphazard way. There were screws popping out (SOME WEREN'T EVEN SCREWED IN, JUST PLACED ATOP THE HOLE); the slats that were screwed in were laid crookedly, the metal hardware for the headboard was now bent out of shape, and there were unsightly tears in the fabric. I'm pissed. I commence the task of unscrewing the slats so that I can lay them correctly. THAT'S WHEN I DISCOVERED MY BED WAS NOT BEING SUPPORTED BY THE SUPPORT LEGS THAT GO WITH IT!!! I text Vance. He calls me. I tell him what has happened and he says "oh, I never EVER saw any support legs with that bed." Wait, I beg your pardon? Mind you, it was VANCE who dismantled the bed at the first location; I watched him with my own 2 eyes! Nooooowww it's all starting to make sense-that must be why he wanted me to find another moving company; he probably figured- if another moving company moved me and setup my bed, I'd probably think it was them that lost the support legs and not Vance and his team. SMFH. He then starts saying he'll look into it with his worker and call me back. He gets back claiming the worker has no idea either. That Monday he calls me while I'm at work with some sob story. I'm now frustrated and annoyed af, and I make that clear. He begins YELLING and hung up in my face. WTF?! He subsequently agrees to order them online and bring them to my job later in the week. An entire week sleeping on the couch. Get home and guess what? The screws are the wrong size. I ended up contacting the manuf. and paying for 6 new legs + expedited shipping. WHAT A NIGHTMARE. This moving service certainly did the job that was expected! Our situation: my girlfriend needed to move in a hurry (same day) so I was tasked with helping to find a mover that was comparable in price to the Dolly app. I called a few movers and their services were all out of her range. I contacted Vance and he called back immediately and took the job, although he had initially given his workers the day off. He was not able to make the original appointment, but he made up for it by keeping me posted via text before his arrival (his delay was acceptable because we called him at the last minute). He arrived and went right to work. Moving is his business, so he came in and told us what he needed to do and set right about doing it. He assured us that the move could be done within the budget and the time frame. We hoped they would only take the larger heavier items, but them came in and took everything, even the loose bags in the kitchen. He even reminded me twice to not help, the guys can handle it! They unloaded with the slightest of breaks, and Mr. Woods was present the whole time. This company is a great option for anyone looking for a quick move, and he is dependable. I would definitely contact him again, and refer him often. My only criticism is his smoking, I have a personal preference that workers/vendors don't smoke around customers. I don't hold it against him at all since its a personal preference, but I did want to mention it. NOTE: Mr. Woods does this on the side, and cares about his workers, so he may not accept an extremely large move or anything that involves 3+ floors up or down. I usually do not give a feedback or ratings, but I really need to thank Vance and his crew for the pleasant experience. I would give ten stars if I could. I moved a studio from a place near University of Chicago to 5300 W 47th Place (near Mid-way airport), a Upack relocube site. So based on my experience, I would recommend Woods and Sons for small size (studio- 2 beds) local moving. I scheduled a time to move a month ago, and went back to China. Vance called me to confirm the time during my trip but I was not able to pick up the phone. Thank god he did not cancel the appointment. On the day of moving, Vance and his crew arrived 5 minutes earlier. He knows about my apartment so well (has moved several times before), and he greets every staff in the building. That made my moving so easy. Then he confirmed with me what stuff and furniture needed to be moved and they started right away. The cleaned my apartments in 5 rounds. The part I got mostly moved was that, when we reached the site, I found all my furniture was protected so well on the truck. Vance and his crew put some effort to fit every piece into stable places. Also, when Vance tried to place the boxes and furniture in the Relocube, he was trying to find the most stable places for everything so that boxes and furniture will not wobble in the inter-state move. It was pretty last minute booking to be honest, but he did such a great job accommodating our needs. First off let me say the day we moved was HOT AS HELL!!!! Vance, the owner himself was on site; his friendliness & realness was completely refreshing during the moving experience. The guys he had with him, (sorry, I forget their names) were very patient with our last minute changes and very gentle & cautious with all of our things, both fragile & non-fragile. Wanted to make sure my good experience was reflected on Yelp, and it appears that the good experiences are nearly unanimous. Very fast, very efficient, very careful. Easy to schedule and friendly. Appears to be black-owned, which is nice. I called the week before, and they were able to schedule me on the day I wanted. Minimum service is two movers for two hours at $210, plus tip. They were twenty minutes early, which was fine, but I'd have felt bad had I not been in my apartment. Cash-only is irritating, but the manager let the last $10 slide when I only withdrew ten twenties from the ATM. That's very good business. I'm very satisfied. read more

I was impressed with this company from the first call. The owner answered the phone, spoke to me with expertise and went out of his way to make my move (which was minimal but complicated and urgent) work out in a way that fit my situation. They showed up promptly, hustled like crazy and didn't balk when the building management gave them a hard time because I (my fault) hadn't reserved an elevator. They worked extra fast to appease the building management and got my things out safely and into a storage ujit in two hours flat. The price was very fair. I've been burned by movers in the past. They showed up late, they brought more people than negotiated at a higher charge, they added extra fees and simply made shit up. I type this as I am currently left STRANDED because of this terrible company. DO NOT HIRE THEM OR THEY WILL LEAVE YOU STRANDED ON MOVE DAY TOO. Long before my move, I told Vance (the owner) exactly what I had. On the day of the move, he shows up 2 hours late. Then, comes into my apartment and says he can't do the move because I have the largest two bedroom apartment he's ever seen. It's a 1,200 sq ft apartment! Then he tells me he can't do it because his truck is too small. He came unprepared with a tiny truck. Frantic, I ask him what he means and he tells me (the customer) to call someone else to do the job. I'm like no YOU call and figure this out! Long story short, he could not find anyone. At that point, it's late in the day and I was not happy. I told Vance he was unprofessional and he needed to fix this. Vance responded by making a scene in the parking lot, yells at me and became very aggressive. I live in a nice area. We don't get like that around here so I told him not talk to me like that. I am not going to allow a grown man to talk to me like that and it's troubling that a man and "business owner" would even go there. Any women looking for a moving company should not move forward with this company due to Vance's lack of respect in communication with women. I was looking for mover's at the last minute but I knew that I wasn't willing to compromise on service so I simply googled 'Best movers in Hyde Park'. I had a very bad experience with last moving company, so I wasn't going to compromise on quality. After speaking with Vance and scheduling with him, even when there was a rain delay, he was kind, professional and engaging. They arrived 15 min early and handled everything like pros (they even helped me take out trash and throw out older furniture from my previous apartment, which was a 3 story walk-up!). Even when we arrived at my new apartment complex and the freight elevators were not working, they took the furniture up the stairs until it was fixed an hour later.
