    Where the shower bar connects
    Kyle M.

This was our second time at the Thompson and we left a little bit disappointed. As I said in my first review, the hotel is gorgeous and such a unique romantic setting. We have stayed here twice for a quick getaway and the staff was fantastic. We were greeted with a bottle of champagne in our room for our anniversary, great attention to detail. However, in both stays we have had maintenance issues that were both dangerous. On the first stay, the closet door came off and almost hit my wife. We reported it to maintenance but it was not fixed during our brief stay. On this trip, a large metal bar which provides structural integrity to the glass shower came loose and fell a few inches from hitting my 2 year old in the head. We were lucky that neither of these situations resulted in injury, but there is definitely some maintenance that needs to be addressed.

The hotel itself is beautiful. The overall service was average, though the valet team was excellent. My room was also missing the security lock, which was concerning. Overall, compared to other hotels I've stayed at, the experience felt fairly average.

Fun place for a staycation if you want upscale vibes- one huge perk is having the moons daughter rooftop bar with a great view of the city. Also got to use the pool- it was honestly quite crowded, and they need more shade/seats other than the cabanas that take up most of the space and cost hundreds to rent out but we still had several drinks and had fun with the DJ playing. They have a cute coffee bar that made really tasty and strong lattes even though it took a long time, but I was in no rush. The bathrooms were very nice, and I love how good everything smelled- they have lotion from DSD Durga that I REALLY wish I could have took home with me lol. This is not a hotel for last minute booking or families, I think it is the perfect spot when you are willing to splurge on a treat yourself weekend or with a partner/friends! In a great spot near restaurants and night life.

This was our first time visiting The Thompson. We decided to spend New Year's weekend and let me say our beloved La Cantera may be downgraded. The room was so beautifully designed, modern and hip!! Purposely didn't put pictures so you could be surprised like we were. And the bathroom The very best part, they allow doggies!! It's 100% pet friendly. So we were VERY happy. But the one complaint is this and I know I'm not the only one to mention, but no designated dog potty area. It was kinda strange. We walked along the river which wasn't bad at all. As matter fact, there's a walkway jetting down to the river from the hotel very convenient. We will definitely be returning.

Definitely recommend this hotel! It's not far from the Riverwalk. It's about a 10 minute walk. Staff was amazing every time we encountered them no matter what. They loved asking if you are enjoying your stay and recommending things to do within the hotel! There was plenty to do. The roof top bar was amazing even on a foggy night. I think valet is the only option for parking however not completely sure. Breakfast options were nice. Steak wasn't as seasoned as I would have liked but wasn't completely disappointed. Definitely recommend this hotel when you want to get away but still have things to do.

I am very glad I didn't go by the review ranking here on my beloved Yelp, since I may have raised my eyebrows and been a tad concerned. Another rating site provided a 5 star rating from 874 reviews, however in reality I didn't check either before booking my trip. If I were to give this a one sentence review, it would be, Is there a valium lick in the employee lounge? We were having a local staycation, if you would and just wanted to get out of Austin for a few days and the Thompson looked sleek, modern and new. They had a couple of restaurants on site, access to the Riverwalk and a spa. Seemed for us a logical choice. From our first contact with the Valet's, there was happiness. We came up to checkin desk, more happiness. Bell hop bringing our bag to our room, happiness and information x 2. In fact, every friggin person in the hotel is happy and accomodating. In this world of conflict and negativity, it was a bit uncomfortable at first, but then you just roll with it. Hence my thought there is that lick in the employee lounge. However, we felt these folks genuinely enjoyed what they were doing and made us feel at home. Upon entry, you are greeted by a massive face sculpture on your left. It resembled what I probably felt like the next morning. There is art all through the hotel as if you were in a gallery. This theme extended to your room. We were staying in a skyline view suite on the 11th floor. It was well appointed with a bar, fridge living/sitting room and a humongous bathtub and shower. The view outside was captivating for me as I woke up early to stare outside wondering if my head was stll actually attached to my neck from the prior evening's debauchery. There were black out curtains and pocket doors which seperated the bedroom from the living room. The bed was very comfortable and A/C worked well to keep us cool. There are two huge TV's which use a streaming system for all you personal streaming apps from your phone. So, if you personally subscribe to streaming apps, make sure you have them downloaded to your phone with log in and passwords. Quite handy, after I figured it out. It was easy, but as an older dude, it took a a couple attempts before I got it right. There are also bluetooth radios which you can link to your Spotify or what have you apps. The property has a pool area which we checked out, little to hot for us, but cool cabana's and a pool side bar. A spa, which we didn't take advantage of, a roof top bar and restaurant on the bottom floor. I will review those seperately. We did get room service breakfast both mornings which is provided by Landrace. One item, you won't go hungry with these portions and you definitely get value from the price point. There is a complimentary coffee bar in the lobby as well as a nespresso machine in your room. They also have a pretty environmentally sensitive water system which provides you with your own water bottle and refill stations on each floor. Grab a tangerine while you are at it. On check in, we worked with a lad originally from Liverpool and we had some great banter regarding footy teams and on check out, a lovely lady helped me with getting a print out and waiving our early departure fee due to an unexpected issue needing us to get home a day earlier than planned and booked. Unfortunately I do not recall their names. Mando our bell hop was a plethora of information and extremely helpful. Other stand-outs in the way of service was Diego the bar keep in Landrace and the cute little bitty student teacher gal, whose name I don't believe I asked for. A big shout out to Rem in the kitchen and upstairs in Moon Daughters, Johnny on the spot mixed a great drink and Ariel was as attentive as you could wish for a server to be. What a great experience and we will definitely be back to stay again.

Airika y Ebed the finest poolside barkeeps in San Antonio!! Cheers!!

The beds and pillows were so comfy, we slept for almost 12 hours our first night... The foods, buffet style, were good, with many options. It was still AMAZING and left me wishing that I could stay longer! My King Room was huge and ultra clean and comfortable! Taking a break from work, I headed to the pool deck, which was small but sufficient and had comfortable chairs to sun in. I remembered an amazing redfish dish from Ostra, enjoyed so many years ago... I really wanted to eat at Ostra again this visit, because I saw redfish on the menu and wondered if it was really as good as my memory of it. I was initially bummed that Ostra was closed for a private event during my stay, BUT my disappointment quickly turned to excitement when I saw the same dish offered on the room service menu. YES!! It was as good if not better than my memory of it! Finally and importantly, the individuals working in valet, front desk, and room service were so service driven and friendly! In the lobby for checkin today, I had an instant headache because the fragrance was so strong. At that point they informed us that there is some additional fee per day on top of the already pricey room, a fee that they never disclosed before today. We continued upstairs, and I could hardly breathe in the elevator it was so scented. When we got to the room it was also heavily fragranced. I tried to call the front desk, and the phone in the room didn't work reliably. Our call dropped several times. They offered box fans for us to air out the room. However, when we opened the windows, a blast of cigarette smoke wafted into the room because it is directly above their designated smoking area. We asked the front desk for help, and they said not to worry, hardly anyone smokes in that area. Meanwhile we watched several people out there smoking almost constantly. They offered no other accommodation or help. Not worth it. Very uncomfortable and upset because this will ruin our vacation. Edit: 1 to 3 stars. The manager eventually heard our concerns, responding to a secondary issue with cigar smoke in our room after leaving windows open - their recommendation- to air out the room. They found us a different accommodation and made it more than fair and comfortable. Why not 4 stars? Because it took the entire first day to be resolved.
