Been in a few times while hopping around downtown on some weekend nights. I think this place has been more than one or two bars since it opened. Thompson's looks like it might have things figured out. It's nice inside, dim, (yes!) and well laid out. It's obviously geared for the mature crowd, either in age or behavior. I usually wind up in here by myself, and just plop down at one of the bar seats. The service is great, staff is nice, and the crowd is low key and mostly normal. Never seen anyone here trying to be somebody. They have one of those "drink menus" that are still popular somehow, but I usually just go for the simple cocktails. I'm old school and boring like that. I like how they shove a glass of water in front of you when you sit down. Yes, the drinks are a little pricey, but here's the deal...it's one thing to pay (in this example) $9.50 for a call drink cocktail that is worthless, that will cause me to one and out a place. It's a completely other thing to pay that much and get a good, strong, well made drink out of it. That I can live with, and enjoy. The drinks are made good enough to get away with the prices. They have a huge selection of liquor, and I even noticed some decent port selections, along with some good wines. ...and the atmosphere, it's nice inside, furniture, layout. Even if there's a crowd, it's still quiet. You can't really hear much talking going on more than a few feet away from you. Good acoustics, or maybe back to the whole "there are mostly adults here, the shot drinking goobers are somewhere else" crowd. Either way, it's nice. They do got that "speakeasy" gimmick thing going on tho...whatever. I knew this going in the first visit, knew about the whole password deal, but went in thinking I would check it out next visit. Once I went in, sat down, I found I really don't care. I like it up top with the rest of the unknowing, or uncaring, masses/trash/uncool kids...my kinda people. I can tellya, I'm usually the ugliest person in the joint, and that's good enough for me. They'll give you the password once you buy a drink anyway, and at some point I'll probably check it out, but honestly...I like it upstairs. read more

Cocktails were just okay. Came in just as they were opening and had to wait 15 mins after opening to be served. My friends cocktail was extremely tart and unbalanced. Then I saw them filling up their juice bottles with bright yellow pasteurized juice which explained the tart cocktails. Great spot for crafted cocktails. Two floors! Enough room for after work cocktail drinks and social crowd. First floor was very cute and little quiet. Look like the bookstore itself with a cozy seating area. Second floor was more for groups and had covered by the a bookshelf , making the entrance a speakeasy and hidden. Then, when someone else at the bar asked for a similar (but far superior) variant of what I ordered, I got the same! After ordering this drink, they recommended an even better twist on my favorite aspects of this drink and they were spot on. Been here a couple times!! First time was here on a quiet Sunday evening. They have awesome drink specials! Can't remember the prices, but I think it was $5/6 for Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Aviator and a couple of other drinks. Honestly we walked by and got a little confused because we only saw the books on the shelves. Definitely has that speakeasy vibe. The drinks on the menu look so intricate and detailed. Loved all their whiskey-based drinks!! Came back on a Friday evening and went to the basement (look for their secret password on Facebook). Was pretty cool down there! I wish all bars could serve a French 75 like Thompson's! We went here with friends on a Friday night for after dinner drinks, and actually had a much better time at the bar upstairs than the pharmacy downstairs because of bartenders and the laid back atmosphere. Downstairs was ridiculously packed, and honestly felt more like a club than a speakeasy bar. The drinks were good that we did try, but we noticed that the guys in our group were largely ignored each time they went up to the bar to order another round of drinks, so we decided to head upstairs and try our luck at the main bar up there. Upstairs was awesome. There was good music, and the same great drinks - but this time they were served by friendly bartenders who kept things entertaining. Watching them make drinks was super fun, and the laid back atmosphere made it way too easy to keep drinking French 75's all night long. This place just oozes cool and mystery. The man sitting by the bookshelf didn't ask us for a password but simply asked if we wanted to go to inside. Had I not known ahead of time that there was a secret bar behind the bookshelf, that question would have been a bit creepy. It was busy and took a while to get our drink orders in. We were able to find a table to sit at and talk all night. The drink I ordered was absolutely incredible and each person at our table ended up ordering one by the end of the night. What a beautiful bar, and such an amazing drink menu. I wish I would've had the opportunity to have enjoyed some of the delicious looking cocktails I was so excited about trying. Last night my friends and I decided to bring a party of seven to the Thompson to celebrate one of our friends birthdays. We chose this place based on some top shelf Bourbons specifically for the birthday boy. Upon walking in we were greeted by a lovely woman and then we approach the bar. The bar top was full with the exception of three stools. The bartender took the order of the people in front of us and as they left we slipped into the stools front and center. I watched him create two really cool looking cocktails for the people next to me. Then he proceeded to ask the man standing behind us what he would like to drink. As my friend and I look baffled at each other we decide it's no big deal what's one more drink. After completely overlooking us again he proceeds to take another man's order who is standing behind us. I looked directly at him and kindly ask him when he gets a chance can he please take care of us with a smile on my face as to not seem confrontational. His reply was that all of these people were here before us. My confusion is if they were here before us why are we sitting at the bar in line in front of them for over 10 mins. One over look, no big deal, three it's just a complete disrespect. I asked if I had done some thing to offend him as to why he was deciding not to serve us. After he gave a brush off excuse we decided to take our business elsewhere. We were already off to a bad start at what was supposed to be a super fun night. We are all in our 40s and love a good overpriced churched up cocktail and the guys in our group are definite bourbon snobs... In my head all I hear is Julia Roberts saying "huge mistake, huge" wish things would have worked out better. I found this little gem nestled on Houston Street. I went there because it shares my namesake It's a very cool bar/speakeasy serving delicious craft cocktails. I loved the vibe and atmosphere of the place. It was decorated in a vintage library style that was very intimate. I met some very nice people at the bar area. I really hate to give a one star review but it has to be done. I ordered the Dr. Jekyll. It literally was the worst drink I have ever had. Tasted like cough syrup and dish soap. I can handle the cough syrup part but not the dish soap part. So I tell the waiter that the drink tasted really bad and that i couldn't drink it. Thinking that he would take it off my tab or offer me something else but he didn't. He still charged me. Update: I'm going to mark this off as just a miscomunication. It was very busy in their defense. It took about thirty minutes to get a drink. Maybe that's why I was so bitter. They still need to take that drink off the menu. read more

The experience of entering through a bookcase was enough to get me excited about this bar! Once we got downstairs and settled in we were greeted by a kind bar tender. The staff are awesome and fun! The menu is overwhelming to say the least. I think it's a little silly to not tell the customer what type of liqour is in a drink and that's what turned me off of this place. I like the unique flavors in the cocktails and the names of them too, but in my opinion some people need to know what type of alcohol they are drinking! Especially for a 13-15$ cocktail! Very interesting place. Worth the visit if you want to feel you are back in the roaring 20's, I suspect (not that I would really know). It isn't big, that is the first thing to know. Small place for sure. It is set in an old historic building, just a few blocks down from all the main activity in Sundance Square. Somehow, the slightly set aside distance almost adds to the mystique of "a speakeasy." We were told ahead of time to look on the faceplace (Facebook) for the password. Otherwise, they will not acknowledge the existence of the lower area behind the bookshelf. We were greeted at the door with a rather large bouncer type. He stared at us. Adds to the effect. I simply said the password for that night, he nodded, and opened up this rather large impressive heavy bookshelf. Nothing else was said. Down the stairs we went. The bottom section is rather isolated and separate from the top. Can't hear noise from one to the other. It isn't large and is almost a bit odd, perhaps that was how it used to be in the days of prohibition (which this is intended to reflect). We ordered a drink and were lucky to find a table. The sitting areas were mostly partitioned with simple curtains, which added to the mystique in the vein of not being able to peer at all the patrons, lest you see someone who shouldn't be there. The lights were old style and the whole decor was tastefully done. Somehow, it felt old and almost out of touch with modern times, yet just fresh and modern enough to not feel dank. We stayed for about 20 minutes, finished our drinks, but my wife and I weren't sure what other reason we had to stay. It was fun, worth the visit, but the two of us weren't sure what else to do. I suppose we had just a touch of claustrophobia happening, although that isn't typical for us. It does feel closed in and well protected. Up the stairs we go, and when we got to the top, it is closed and not exactly clear how to exit. Interesting effect. I pulled open the back of the stair case and it doesn't budge. Locked. Hmmm... I did the only thing that seemed obvious, which was to push a red button, and in a few moments, the big bouncer dude opens the door and out we went. Added to the atmosphere for sure. Not sure I liked that or not, but it lent a touch of authenticity. Recommended if the idea of a tiny simple speakeasy calls your name. read more

Visiting Fort Worth from L.A. to attend a conference. Walked down to Thompson's for a drink - visually very cool. Once inside, never greeted..had to walk up to the bar for service. I was in Fort Worth but sure felt like an L.A. hipster bar. Menu ridiculous - 1 full page of rules listing acceptable/unacceptable behavior and drink ingredients don't list spirits. Prices were reasonable. Bartender was pretentious and rude. Drink was not to my liking - might have chosen a more desirable one had I known the ingredients. Finished my 1 drink and left. Came in over to Thompson's after the symphony for a few cocktails. Upon entrance a fellow who was not exactly polite told us to get in line for the speakeasy, but we just wanted to sit at the street level bar. Not a good beginning for this clientele. The bartenders were all very friendly and knowledgeable. We had an old fashioned and a gin cocktail. Both were perfect. We stayed for a few more. While perched at the bar having a conversation with my company, on two different occasions someone reached through our faces while we were talking to fetch their drink from the bar. In a cocktail bar like this, the bartenders should sort of direct the people ordering at the bar around the people sitting at the bar. I found this to be quite annoying and circa college bar behavior. Not my jam at all. But for the uninviting entrance fellow and the rude customers reach at the bar, I would have rated this establishment a 5. However, I will be back to check it out again. read more

Alright, what can I say, it's difficult not to love this cozy speak easy bar! Cozy, secretive, and great lighting and atmosphere really make this place a desirable place to check out... and then you get a drink, and you'll find no reason to leave! They have a wonderful drink selection, and their drinks are not just standard drinks you'll find at every other bar... they're well crafted to perfection, and the bar staff really does well to present the drinks perfectly for you! This was a fun little place to find with some friends last night! The ambience was so fun, and I loved the decorations in the secret basement. The drinks were more reasonably priced than I expected too. I had the mule and honestly didn't like it that much, because the ginger beer was far too spicy for my liking. However, the second drink I had (I don't know what it was called, because the bartender made me something based off my description of what I like) was pretty good. I love this bar! Kendall S brought us here for a nightcap on my recent trip to Fort Worth and I really enjoyed the ambiance + the drink menu. Plus the history of how it used to be an old bookstore won me over like nothing else. It feels like a lot of love went into creating the space - the lighting is just right, warm and cozy; the furniture is vintage and comfortable, set up perfectly for small groups to have intimate conversations over cocktails; and the drink menu is substantial to say the least. I went with a basic French 75 and it was delightful. We were in and out after just one drink, but if I were a local I could see myself spending many more hours at Thompson's, sampling the menu, and enjoying the company of friends. read more

I know this place is brand spanking new, but I love it. Finally a new bar that won't appeal to the college crowd :) I love the concept. There's a great corner entrance to the upstairs bar. You walk in and it's cozy. Comfy chairs littered everywhere, exposed brick, great decor and of course the bar. Separate (or accessed by elevator) is the downstairs bar. Enter the basement bar through the 8th street entrance. You'll see the caduceus sign and the blue light brightening the stairway to the door if 'the doctor is in'. Dress appropriately. I can see this easily being a after work spot. They serve some really delicious craft cocktails here, BUT they have a killer wine selection. Over 52 bottles to choose from and 20 offerings by the glass. Grab a book and relax on the ground level or head to the basement for a bit more fun. Either way I think this place will be a huge hit and I hope they find a good following! read more

What a let down! This place is really cool and even though my last (and perhaps final) experience was a poor one, I do want to call out Conrad and give him the credit he deserves for bring a first-class bartender. In town on business and had a large group. Started with dinner at Grace (always fantastic) and then caught a little live jazz at Scat (another great spot). Wanted a proper night cap on the way back to the hotel, so I took the crew to Thompson's. I had been here the night before and several times in the past while visiting Fort Worth on business. The concept is a high-end bar with craft cocktails and an "Adult" atmosphere. A good place to take people on business if you want to avoid house music and kids drinking shots. It has a Speakeasy in the basement and that's where I always go to have my drink. I walk right through the front door and then open the bookcase that shrouds the entrance to the basement bar and enjoy my $15 cocktail.....until LAST NIGHT! Imagine taking a group of business associates out for an evening on the town, having an epic dinner, some great music and then wanting to put that "cherry on top of the cake" only to be turned away by the door man because you didn't know the password??? What a failure to properly train your people. While I certainly respect the "exclusivity" that they are trying to attain with this concept, you must teach your people discretion. Six 40-something year old people in suits and evening dresses are NOT the people you want to turn away from your establishment. I had built this place up as a great spot and was really disappointed to be turned away (and frankly embarrassed in front of my associates) because we are from a generation that does not participate actively on Social Media. Patterson House in Nashville, Apothecary in Jackson, PDT in New York. ...all have the Speakeasy vibe going, but would NEVER turn away a party of 6 people. It was 1:15a.m.????? Nobody was even there??? Now there are 6 people who frequently do business and entertain in Fort Worth that will NEVER return to this place! I feel badly for the Owner, because I cannot imagine that this is what he or she intended when they created this concept. The objective here is to make people feel special....not humiliate them at the end of thier otherwise flawless evening. I hope the Hipsters can generate enough income to keep your place open? I come here 5-6 times a year on business with a very large organization and I will not be patronizing this place anymore. I will make sure that my associates don't either. A real shame.... read more

Great place for a more professional and grown up clientele, they have done a great job of remodelling and the secret passage idea works very well and does a great job of separating the bar but yet giving them a unique connection. The drinks are awesome the "grapes of wrath" is incredible and the staff is great they do very well when things arent too crazy and they can pay attention but when the rush hits things slow down and thier craft suffers as they try to keep up. How ever i do not hold the staff accounable for that, they were definitely understaffed on the street level bar last night ..... I think management has underestimated just how popular thier place would be so they are in the throws of adjusting to some nice growing pains. I had been really wanted to check out thompson's for a while, but the few times I went to go they were closed. So on a rainy Wednesday night I decided to walk on over for a night cap! I will say the decor and ambience was perfect! The cocktail specialist came over and sat next to me explaining the menu and etc. I opted for a gin gimlet, I'm still on a gin kick! I really do enjoy this bar. It is more on the high end so you will be spending $12 a drink but I love watching the bartenders make them. It is art. Just beautiful to watch. I've been here a few times and I never have any problems. I like fact that the menu describes the flavor of the drink and not what's in it just so people try things out of their comfort zone.
