Very small winery that's in Lake county; little outside of the famous Napa valley area. This winery had a lot of award winning wines & the some of the better tasting wines compared to the others in the area. Fave wines that I had tasted here ($10 tasting fee but waived if you buy 2 bottles): 2016 pinot grigio (4 stars) Very light & refreshing pineapple notes 2016 sauvignon blanc (3.5 stars) Not as a smooth finish as the pinot but still refreshing with fruity & slight citrus notes. 2013 merlot (5 stars) Very unlike any merlot I had ever tasted. This tasted more like a cab, very rich cherry & plummy flavours. This went perfectly w/ dark chocolate that I had brought along. 2014 volcanic cabernet sauvignon reserve: 3 stars Very dark beery notes but wasn't didn't have a smooth finish as the merlot did. 2008 "fire" petite Syrah port: 5 stars One of the best ports that I have ever had; very plummy & cocoa notes. This was not syrupy at all; so refreshing because most ports have that gross syrup consistently to it. 2010 "Ice" late harvest wine: 4 stars Very light honey tasting w/ apricot notes but the finish wasn't as smooth as the "fire" port. read more

What a beautiful Tasting Room!! My boyfriend and I stopped here on our way through Lake County and were pleasantly surprised with the service and the amazing wines. Genice served us and she was great! She really made us feel welcome and showed us around their property. Not only are they a tasting room but they also have a few rooms you can rent out for a few days. We really enjoyed trying their wines and chatting with Genice. What a memorable experience! Came in here randomly on of my visits to Kelseyville and wow were we pleasantly surprised with a) the hospitality b) the quality of wine c) the awesome decor and layout of this B&B If I didnt have a place up in Kelseyville, I would be totally staying here and sipping on their amazing Volcania Cabernet. This was one of the very first winery stops during the 2019 Wine Adventure in Lake County. I was not wowed by this location but did enjoy listening to the winemaker's experience and expertise regarding the various pairings that were offered that weekend. The other staff were really pushy in regard to the wine club which I was not interested in, and did not appreciate their overbearing attitudes. I would make sure to try there Cabernet Sauvignon, heavily influenced by the volcanic soils of the sourced vineyard, smooth tannins forming and becoming as smooth as could be for their current 2013 vintage. My husband and I went to California in May and made a stop at Thorn Hill and we are so glad that we did! Amy and Jack (owners) greeted us warmly. They gave us a tour of the grounds and the villas (which are stunning). The location has a lovely view and the villas and tasting room have unique details and fine craftsmanship. My husband really enjoyed admiring the work and asking questions with Amy. Now, the wine, it's to die for! Their wine has so much body, flavor, and amazing aromas! We shared a glass of sparkling with Jack and Amy on their front porch of the tasting room and enjoyed the sunset! It was delightful! I'd highly suggest the red rock cab, it is a uniquely wonderful wine! If you head out to wine country, give Thorn Hill a visit! You will not regret it! read more

I highly recommend coming here. The Cabernet is simply amazing so is the Reisling. We walked out with three wines but we didn't want to leave. The location is charming and the woman pouring was fantastic and very informative. You can tell she knows a lot about the products. read more

Jack Frost was an exceptionable clerk. He was very knowledgeable on the locale, grapes, and wine. The winery is very conducive to socializing and can accommodate a larger party. Very nice simple grounds and winery building, but beautiful. I think the price point is right on for the area as well and free wine tasting. I bought a bottle of their port, wished I could afford the Cabernet as well, but I am a single mom and could not buy both. read more

The building is so pretty but they charge $10 per person for a wine tasting and require you to buy 2 bottles for the tasting fee to be waived. They also charge a separate fee ($7) to try the dessert wines. I was really disappointed with the selection. While some of their wine was great I thought they were charging a bit much compared to some other really great wineries in the area. read more

Genice is the PERFECT wine host. My husband and I wanted to try Thorn Hill again (after a too-colorful experience our first time right after this tasting room opened) and were treated to a wonderful tasting. The wine is actually made in Sonoma - something we didn't realize until we got home with our purchases - which explains the cool reception this winery has received from the other Lake County wineries. (And the reason for four stars instead of five.) While there is nothing at all wrong with making the wine in one county and selling it in another, the winery itself - the owners - should communicate in all their POS literature that they are a Sonoma winery making lots of great wine with Lake County fruit. Lake County is doing a bang up job of growing grapes and when Thorn Hill starts to brag about it in their Lake County tasting room they are going to find the locals a whole lot more supportive. That said, this winery is making a variety of tasty wines sourced from Sonoma, Napa and Lake Counties. Their sparkling wine is a rock star - absolutely ethereal and well-priced. Their Lake County (sourced) Merlot is a keeper. i shied away from the good-enough white wines with the "19.99" price tags. I vote with my dollars by not buying wine priced like that. My professional recommendation to this winery would be to work on the transparency of messaging. They have a nice tasting room, Genice is fabulous! and they have good, well-priced wines. Start bragging about the Lake County sourcing of some of the wines, drop the 99 cent none sense, and you'll get more visitors to your tasting room for Genice to host!! read more

Went out for a second time visit here in July and to stay in the guest rooms. They were clean, private, and the view was awesome. Jack and Amy have done a really nice job with their recent renovations and their employees are very friendly. This is a great place to spend the night and look at the stars. I have never seen skies so clear and it was nice to relax on the rocking chairs and star gaze. Their son, Jon, is very helpful and is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He makes you feel like a part of the family and is more than happy to answer any of the questions you have about the area or about the wine. I would definitely recommend spending a couple of nights here, because it is the nicest winery in area and you won't find better wine. read more

Definitely worth a visit. We tasted everything form their sparkling to their dessert wines. We enjoyed them all. We also enjoyed talking with Shannon who was pouring. She was very knowledgable about the region. I recommend adding this tasting room to your visit to Lake County. A much more intimate experience than the Napa Valley. Beautiful building! Don't care for the wine or the location (Clearlake is amazing, but this place is located on the highway far from the water). The staff was rather rude and seemed annoyed that we came in to taste wine. They mostly talked amongst themselves and we were the only customers in the place. read more

St. Helena, CA - My wife and I learned more in a couple hours with the owners of the Thorn Hill winery than on several other 'wine tours'. Jack and Amy (the owners) really took an active interest in getting to know us, sharing their incredible story, and providing some of the most wonderful Pinot, Zin, Chardonnay, and Sparkling Brut we've ever had. The tasting was extremely classy and laid back and Chris, our hostess, took great care of us.
