My friend wanted to try this place. It's different so I said sure! It's okay. Parking is horrible, only a few spaces up front and a lot around the corner to use. It has serious ambiance with a courtyard and garage type eating area. There is a small bar room and another enclosed dining space. I use the term dining however know that it is limited. The bar seats are not comfortable. I had the pretzels with spicy mustard which were warm and delicious. They also have pizzas (which they call flatbreads) and meatless options. People next to us enjoyed their pie. The draw was the distillery for sure. It has specialty cocktails with homemade juices. They make and sell a pecan whisky and will feature beer in the near future. It's a nice place to bring a date as you will not get tipsy as the drinks were not strong. Or if you just want the ambiance that it gives and a drink and a snack. They do events with catering the bartender said and that seemed like a good place for a party. Rent out the whole place or a large area. Plenty of seating, smoking area, variety of drinks and places to sit. read more

Food & Drinks are always good here however the customer service just isn't there. The last 2 times I visited I was disappointed. I follow on socials and saw a new holiday cocktails and wanted to try. Sadly, I couldn't even get sat as the hostess was too busy. Made me wait 5 min before even acknowledging me as I stood face to face with her at the stand. She said she had to finish something before seating us. Restaurant side is completely empty... wait 10 min.. my husband asks again.. still won't seat is. Then an argument between server and hostess about who ordered what, where they are sitting.. just mass confusion as I'm just standing there for over 10 min. I thought wow.. how unprofessional...we ended up leaving. Last time we came several months back.. our server also seemed annoyed and was not friendly. Good food & drinks are important but if you don't have good customer service with all these extra fees and inflated prices, it's not worth it. read more

Thornton Distillery needs to stick to what they know...distilling. Sunday Brunch leaves much to be desired. Very limited brunch menu and no choice of fresh fruits or teas. We arrived at 1pm and didn't get food until 2pm... then all eight entrees were COLD! The chicken & waffles were flavorless and the Bootlegger burrito was bland. The other 6-8 people at other tables appeared to have waited as well. Service was mediocre at best. Dining area is more of an afterthought since the pool table and arcade games are right on top of the tables. Maybe the drinks are better but I won't be going back to try any of them. read more

This place has the worst customer service ever! Thornton Distillery lost a great tipping customer over an incident that took place in the restroom that is supposed to be private. My wife has Crohn's disease and stage one pancreatic cancer and has to use the restroom frequently. She was approached by an employee and asked us to leave because she vomited in the restroom. Been coming here since it was "the Well"! Great ambience. It has the charm and distinctiveness of an old time speak-easy and the cocktails are magical. Sadly, we were disappointed in this place. Our expectation was to be educated on their liquors and had hoped to see a craft drink list. The bartender told us about the syrups, but didn't explain what could be made with them. When we asked about a drink menu, the bartender handed it to us saying it was from an old bartender--they are making changes. As a fall back we ordered a Bloody Mary. $14 for a bottle mix, lime and an olive. Robbery. When we asked about the history of the building the bartender told us to read about it on the website. The building has potential, but will take some money. It's a mish mash of tables and didn't appear to be too clean. Wasn't a place for us and we won't be back. read more

My wife and I have been to over 50 distilleries at this point, and so we were excited to stumble across this one, which uses Artesian spring water. Their vodka is actually interesting, the gin great for cocktails, and we look forward to the release of their single malt. The cocktail program at the bar is great, with 10 different variations on an Old Fashioned on offer (although I recommend the Gold Rush Old Fashioned myself). My wife and I were both happy with the food on offer - I had the Bourbon BBQ Burger and she had the Barbacoa Tacos. If you have the chance, stop on by, and if you're free on a Saturday, pay for the distillery tour. read more

We just had a 40th birthday party for my cousin over this past weekend. The place exceeded expectations! Not only was it easy to work with Andrea and Parian (the event coordinators) but the staff was excellent as well! From walking in, the downstairs bartender stopped what he was doing, to walk me to the party room, while also grabbing another bartender to take care of any guests who were already sitting. For our party, Miguel was the bartender and he was was a blast!! Will definitely come again just to hang out as well as use this location for another party we need. Food - it could be better. I understand brunch is a new edition so they are working out the kinks. My two cents - for the chicken and waffles- maybe not serve hot wings for the chicken. I think chicken tenders or a chicken breast would pair well for this dish. My husband's chicken sausage were literally served uncooked! That a big no - no and should be a less common mistake. The food should definitely have been checked before plating! My daughter had an omelet that was under seasoned. My meal was actually pretty tasty. I had the SENATOR BIELFELDT'S FRIED EGG SANDWICH with bacon and potatoes. My husband also had bottomless mimosas I thought were overpriced @ $30.00. We usually pay about $20-$25 for bottomless mimosas but ok- it is what it is. I didn't get them because I was not able to choose my flavor of juice. I prefer pineapple over orange so I just had coffee and my daughter ordered a pineapple mimosa priced @10.00 so it really didn't matter if my husband had bottomless, it kind of evens out because he had three - so maybe not do bottomless if it's ultimately the same price:( Service- it was ok. Not great but I understand they were a bit short staffed. My two cents- upon asking the waitress what was a good option on the menu? Her response was she hadn't tried anything so she wasn't aware of any favorites nor have she tried anything. This type of response doesn't sit well with me because the waitress should be able to make suggestions to guest. "I haven't tried or I don't know" are not acceptable answers in this industry. Ambiance- this was the best thing here. It's a very old building that has lots of history. Adam did an amazing tour and offered a rich experience on the history and culture. The tour of the distillery was really great! I wish them much success and hope this restaurant thrives because we certainly need restaurants that give a feeling of being in Chicago without having to actually travel to Chicago (and pay for parking). To sum it up- I'd say they get 2.5 stars (but I can't select the half so I just gave 3) because there is definitely room for much improvement. I'm really looking for an experience when I go out to a sit down restaurant which starts with being greeted through receiving the check. I checked this place out last night for the first time with a couple friends and we had a an absolutely fantastic experience. To get inside we had to walk through this beautiful outdoor courtyard full of tables similar to one you might find on your deck or patio at home. Once inside we were immediately greeted by the bartender, who, along with the person I assumed to be the owner, was very friendly and helpful over the course of the night. While they obviously renovated and updated the bar area they were still able to maintain the historical integrity of the room while also achieving a very welcoming and cozy atmosphere. Sadly, we didn't have time to take a tour, but that is definitely on the list for next time. Concerning the drinks, I had a Needed Proof and a Secret Chord. I also sampled a couple of my friends' drinks which included a straight pour of the Pecan Whiskey and the Sweet Forgiveness. All of these went down very smooth. They were all very well balanced and not at all too sweet, which is something I always worry about with mixed drinks like these. As soon as it becomes available, I will be purchasing a bottle of the Pecan Whiskey. Very impressive. Finally, the food. Between the 3 of us we ordered a Cheese Board, a Margherita Flatbread, and a Mushroom Flatbread. The Cheese Board was pretty standard, but enjoyable. A good mix of different cheeses, fruits, and jams available to be eaten with crackers. The Mushroom Flatbread is what blew me away, though. The giardiniera and mushrooms mixed well together for a light heat that went great with my drink. Between the 3 of us we spent about $100 total before tip. We left full and happy and are looking forward to coming back ASAP. read more

We had a tour and a tasting, as well as lunch. The tour was fascinating, listening to all of the history and seeing some of the old relics found during the updating of the building. It was easy to see the passion in Andrew as he told us about the building! All of their own liquor is used in the drinks, and everyone in our group (15-20 of us) enjoyed their beverages. Went here for the first time, and can't wait to return! The venue itself is so cool, the decor and atmosphere only add to the vibe. THE BARTENDER'S PLAYLIST IS SO FREAKING AWESOME!! It gave me electronic speakeasy vibes, and people were up dancing. The bartender was super knowledgeable and recommended great drinks, I've never seen such carefully crafted cocktails. The tour was amazing! Andrew one of the founders was so engaging and entertaining as he walked us through the history of the building and the surrounding area. Who knew that Thornton had such a rich history? We stayed for drinks and food after the tour, the food was great, the service was meh! It was only one waitress and she had to divide her time between the bar area and the dining area so she was stretched thin. Overall a great experience and I will definitely go back. read more

I had no idea at his place existed but saw someone recommend it on Facebook recently. The photos on Yelp looked cool and we were in Lansing so we thought we'd check it out! First off, the building is super cool. The courtyard would be awesome to sit out on on a nice summer night (we stopped by on a cold rainy one haha). The bar is really neat and the whole space is very cool, exposed brick, old wood, minimalist decor. I started with the Strawberry whiskey drink and it was great, I'm not a huge whiskey person so I was a bit apprehensive but it was really good. My husband had the Old Fashioned which he liked too. We ordered the mushroom flatbread which is more like a Neapolitan pizza, really good! Has a little kick to it too. I probably could have eaten another one, nom nom nom. We started chatting with John, the owner at the bar and he gave us a tour of the well which was super cool. It's the only natural spring in the area and feeds into Lake Superior (I think that is rightI was drinking whiskey after all) John was super nice and I loved hearing the history of the place. He has a lot of experience and some cool plans for this place so I can't wait to see how it goes! For my second drink I had a vodka drink that tasted like a shortbread cookie (but not too sweet) it was awesome! I can't wait to come back for the craft show they are hosting later in the year. What an awesome find! This place has so much history and such an incredible atmosphere. I stopped by yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The bartender made amazing cocktails and the stories from the other guests had me riveted. The bar is really cool and ceiling was removed, so looking up you will see the upper floor. They don't have food yet, but understand it's coming. The only downside might be parking. If this place gets busy, I'm not sure where you would park. They may have it figured out, so probably should ask. Highly recommend the Manhattan- it's a slight variation for the original, but just fantastic. You absolutely must go!!!! read more
