So glad my wife and I visited the Journeyman for the first time and had a great experience. We sat outside and enjoyed a whiskey flight, smoked old fashion, loaded potato fritters, bourbon blackened chicken pasta and the sausage & pepperoni detroit style pizza. All our food was excellent and very flavourful. The old factory building with the rustic wood floors and exposed brick provides great ambience. 1) tried to go because we needed a spot to charge our EV, but they only have Tesla chargers. 2) second try: I'm no expert, but thought my Rye whiskey on the rocks was superb 3) bar service was Ok, could have been better. Table service was very good 4) Food was ok, I wouldn't go out of my way for the food. My cheeseburger/fries were good, not great. 5) Bathrooms were not unsanitary, but needed attention - trash cans overflowing, towels on the floor 6) The place is cool, an old factory, not fancy, you could hear your fellow diners speak, but they sneak a mandatory 1% heritage preservation charge on your bill. You are a successful business and your building is an expense, I found this petty. I have heard good things about this place for a long time but found the overall experience underwhelming. read more

A hidden gem with history, charm, and seriously good spirits. This was my 4th or 5th visit, and it just keeps getting better. The distillery is tucked inside a beautifully restored buggy whip and women's corset factory--how's that for character? The space is not only unique but also a fantastic spot for drinks, tastings, and good company. I've done the full tour and tasting, and I always recommend starting with a flight to really appreciate the range. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to make recommendations or answer questions. You can tell they love what they do. I usually grab a bottle of the OCG, but this time I went for the Cherry Ol' Fashioned--and wow. Perfectly balanced, served with proper large-format ice cubes (yes, that matters), and just the right amount of cherry goodness. Prices are very reasonable, whether you're sipping at the bar or taking a bottle home. If you're anywhere nearby--or even just passing through--this place is absolutely worth the detour. Walked in on a Saturday afternoon, stood at the hostess stand for 9 minutes. The head hostess NEVER looked up from her ipad. I finally asked another employee can he take my name? He said no but walked over to the hostess who still didn't look up from her iPad. After 3 minutes she gave another hostess 2 menus and 2 sets of silverware. We sat down and after 6 minutes I asked a busboy for a waitress. He gave us 2 waters but still no waitress. Four more minutes and the food runner came by our table with a hot pretzel in her hand and asked if we had it ? I said no we have not had a waitress and my water glass was chipped. She brought me a new glass but still no waitress. Six minutes later the manager came over and took our order one cocktail and 2 meals. The food came after 5 minutes but still no cocktail. We were almost done eating and the lady manager came by our table and noticed no cocktail. She went back in and got it. She did comp the drink. The blt salad was mostly lettuce. We paid and left. Located in a refurbished Featurebone and Corsets factory from the 1800s,this place is huge. We browsed thru their gift shop area and did a tasting flight for lunch. Prices for the flights are very reasonable and the bottles for purchase are good compared to other local distilleries. They offer 5 different flights including the Rye,Vodka and Gin they made in collaboration with the Field Museum in Chicago. I did the Cask Strength flight for only 10.00. Their Ryes were very good. They offer a huge craft cocktail menu as well as hand crafted beers. A really neat place to visit when in Michigan. read more

We arrived on a very busy Friday night. It was hard to decide which door was the main door and we had to follow a rope to the front reception But they were kind and handled the crowd well! Despite the busy night we were seated relatively quickly. The main room is pretty loud on a Friday, but luckily they sat us in a back bar room that was more quiet. The food and service were both good... but let's be honest... we were there for the cocktails! And they did not disappoint. Went to dinner with a work group. Cool setup in the distillery with a little shop on your way in/out for merch and alcohol to take home. Everyone enjoyed the apps, entrees and drinks they ordered! Got off to a slow start with the waiter and we all ended up with our coats back on because it was pretty chilly inside, but doubt those details ring true normally. read more

This is a tough one. We have been here a few times. The good part: The place is super cool with an old rustic look. There are plenty of seats to accommodate everyone. Drinks are ok. The food is pretty good. The price is a little high on drinks. Now the bad part: The service. I don't know why it is always so bad. I can take bad service once maybe even twice, but to get bad service every time, that's unacceptable. Here's the kicker. The Valpo Journeyman is the same way when it comes to service. We have been there a few times and it's horrible. This makes me think it's a reflection of management. Something isn't right, and they need to figure that part out. If they do, I might come back. A must if in area! On a Sunday early afternoon, there was a 45 minute plus wait, so we opted to sit an the bar and was seated within 5 minutes. Located in an 1800 Featherbone and Corsets Factory. There were several empty tables, so not sure what was going on. However, the service at the bar was excellent. I tried the Purple Rain and appreciated our bartender telling me to get my camera ready. I was not expecting the drink to change color, but it did. The mixture of flavors, worked so well together. My husband had a cherry old fashioned a barrel aged old fashioned. The drinks are worth stopping in. For food we had the Journeyman Pizza with bourbon crust. It was Detroit style pizza , but was nothing special. They offer tours and there is a putting green! They sell their whiskey and bourbon , along with other merchandise. When in Michigan , we will definately return. read more

It was raining big time on our way to South Haven so the botanical garden we planned was a no go. We came upon Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks MI. What a great find! We a private tour with Ed learning the history and tasting 14, yes 14, pours. Ed was very thorough on the history and what we were drinking. I love the history of the building and Journeyman. We came away with a few bottles and had a couple drinks at the bar. My husband had a straight bourbon and I had a frozen concoction called the OCG apple cider, a white whiskey drink with apple juice and spices blended and frozen. Amazing!! Their restaurant is large and look like it had a really good menu, but we didn't eat there since we had already eaten lunch. Next time. I've been on the Bourbon Trail three years in a row, and this year will be number four. I felt like I was on the Bourbon Trail. For you Midwesterners, no need to drive to Kentucky. Check out this distillery in Michigan. You won't be sorry. I had a great time!! read more

We arrived at 11am on a Saturday morning, and I was concerned about showing up so early to a brewery. There was a line, so I guess great minds think alike! By the time we left the building was bursting at the seams! Even if you are not into breweries the building and it's history is still worth a visit. The building was an 1800 Featherbone and Corsets Factory, and the owners have done a lovely restoration. The menu is eclectic and interesting, and the are so many creative cocktails. I had a drink made with fig rye, and one was not enough. If you need to by any gifts for the holidays or other occasions there is a lovely gift shop. read more

Well, the food and drinks were good. Ambience great. ....but the service sucked. Our waitress was completely discombobulated. Distracted. Took forever to get drinks. Meals took a very long time and when it finally came, one out of two meals was nowhere to be found. Like not even ordered. Was a total mess. The people next to us took at least 30 minutes to get drinks and their food never came. They finally had to leave because their show at Acorn next door was starting. One would think that this place has been around long enough to understand how to run a restaurant. The poor service was just plain bizarre. The manager tried to make it ok and comped a meal and a drink but it was such an extraordinarily screwed up experience that the couple of bucks they took off fell short. I noticed that other people seem to have service issues based on reviews. Idk guys. Get it together. Whoever is in charge needs to find a new job because they are clearly incompetent. read more

Unfortunately this was an incredibly disappointing and underwhelming experience. We visited the bar for a tasting before our dinner reservation at the Staymaker (in the same building). The waitress was curt and seemed very put off and annoyed when we asked to do a tasting. I didn't think it was possible, but once she found out we weren't sitting at the bar for food we well, she became more distant and seemed to write us off. We had never visited and wanted to get a good taste of Journeyman so we each did a flight. Thankfully, the boards did come with descriptions, because once they were dropped off, we weren't checked in on at all. We had questions on the proof and wanted to try a couple more but after being rudely dismissed and ignored, we paid our bill and went to our dinner reservation hoping for a better experience (it was not). The distillery has a large restaurant where you can order food and order tastings of their whiskey. The staff are nice. Fried Brussels Sprouts: very yummy. Good flavour and texture. A bit greasy. Hand-cut Season Fries: first batch was over cooked and dry. The staff refried a new batch and it tasted much better. Not the best fries. Detroit Meets Italy Pizza: Detroit style pizza. The pizza had fresh ingredients with a crispy cheesey crust. However, the flavour is a bit bland. Wish that there was more pesto across the pizza. Old Fashioned Wings: flavour was great and the chicken was very juicy. This dish seems like a Monday special. read more

Cool vibe. Friendly, excellent service. Conveniently next door to the Acorn theater. Food was good except for the mustard. We had the pretzel appetizer which came with cheese sauce and mustard sauce. I love mustard, but the mustard was almost solid--full of so many seeds that it was crunchy. It was also pretty strongly horseradishy. My husband had the angus burger with bacon topped mustard potato salad. The burger was good, but the potato salad had an overpowering spicy mustard flavor. I had the turkey club. The turkey club was delicious, and the fries that came with it were really good. Overall it was a pleasant experience except for the potato salad. I think it would have been great if they had used a more subtle mustard and less of it. read more

Of course we had to check out Journeyman! We arrived at opening and there were already people turned out. At first we thought we were perhaps a little over ambitious but I am here to tell you this place fills up fast in no time. This was the first stop on our visit so we were pacing ourselves, my wife had the fig old fashioned and I had a white whiskey mule with jalapeno heat; and we split the brussels. The service was extremely friendly, accommodating, and more than happy to help out a couple of first timers. The place is massive, with plenty of areas to sit and explore. There is a putting green out back for the kiddos, daily tours offered, a gift shop, etc. There is also an elevator for those that need it, rest rooms up and down. The building is full of examples of upcycling, from the wood used from the old barn, the original factory floors, to the piece of flooring that you will receive your bill on. Fun fact, the building used to be the factory that made buggy whips and revolutionized corsets by using turkey bones instead of whale bones. The original owner was also a staunch prohibitionist so he is probably spinning in his grave lol. read more

This place is decidedly mediocre. We arrived and they were fairly empty. My friend ordered pizza and I got some kind of veggie sandwich. After waiting a long time and watching our food sweat it out under the heat lamps my friend's pizza was served. The server said, "your food is burned." Well obviously it was burned as it sat under the heat lamp for 15minutes while the staff had disappeared somewhere in the back. So there I am sitting watching my friend eat her pizza when the bartender finally emerges from wherever and goes, "so how's it going?" Uhm I don't know dude I have no food and my friend is almost done with her pizza, seems pretty obvious how it is going. I reply, "well I have no food so not great." I mean duh. Finally my veggie sandwich comes out. It's mediocre and has like sabra hummus on it with veggies from like subway. Not to mention my salad sat under the heat lamp for 20+ minutes and was wilted and sad with a film over the ranch. I would never come back here. The service is inept and the food is not great. The ambiance is cool however they will charge you some kind of historical fee for that so watch your bill. read more

I attended a wedding here many years ago and remember it fondly. We also visited on a vacation during Covid and thought it was great. But this visit? Not so good. Service was strange. Head of house didn't acknowledge us for a good 5 minutes as we stood at the stand waiting. Then our server was similarly disinterested in us. She brought our drinks to 3 other tables before ours and seemed flustered when my kids ordered for themselves. Food was such a letdown. I love garlic, so I figured the pizza feat garlic would be such a hit but it was soooooo overdone. I feel like they put on 3x the amount they should have. Kids' meals were weird. The Mac & cheese sauce was straight up water at the bottom of the dish and the fries were overcooked. Everything was just such a miss, which was sad because it has not been like that in the past! First time here and we really liked our experience-- from pre dinner drinks on the putting green to a nice dinner. Buy your putting passes at the front, grab your putter, and head out back. There's a silo bar and handy cup holders at every tee box. The putting green is legit too-- long and shot putts and lots of undulations. Fun and challenging! Dinner was great-- the open, lively dining room is energizing and the menu choices are great. We really enjoyed our food -- pasta, burger, Nashville hot chicken, and Detroit style pizza-- yum! We've been going to Journeyman for years as locals here in town. It's one of our favorite places to enjoy and brings friends visiting. We've had Father's Day for five years with three other families and our kids and look forward to continuing the tradition. We've gotten to know the wait staff and bartenders through the years, who work really hard with a smile. Oh, yeah. The food is great. The whiskey's are superb. We always bring home a bottle or two to enjoy. We hope the current hostess acquires more table manners given our experience with her this last Father's Day. It'd be nice too if the owners took the time to respond when feedback is given when dining experiences are surprisingly. negatively affected by their hostess. It was so chaotic for the weekend. But our server was as friendly and attentive. They don't have a lot of vegetarian food. I got the vegan grinder which was OK - really oily and messy and kind of blah in flavor. The pizzas were really good though. They have some apps and then a one pasta dish. I bought some mustard because it was so good. The putt-putt was kinda meh. It's cute but it's just one giant green with putting holes so a bit crowded and chaotic out back. What a wonderful nod to the historic significance of this building, combined with tasty food, and creative drinks. The signature cocktails were enjoyed by several members of my party. Surprisingly, the offerings for non-alcoholic beverages were also complex and tasty - a huge boon for the non-imbibers. The food was enjoyable, the Detroit pizza was an outstanding win on the menu. The prices are also a very good value for what you get. This past visit, my husband and I got two flights (the whiskey and the specialty), the Detroit pizza, and the pretzel. I am not exaggerating when I say that pretzel was one of the best I've ever had. And the pizza was great! I'm a bourbon gal myself, and their Featherbone is top notch. We came by here with our group of 18 as we wanted to come to a local distillery. We were out in Sawyer for our group festivities and I couldn't help but notice the Yelp reviews on this place & it did not disappoint. They were able to accomodate our group and most of us tried their delicious drinks. I even purchased one of their liquors to take home!
