We have eaten at the Thorpedo for 30+ years. Early on, it was a treat to eat breakfast or late night burgers. We loved their home made pies. When the restaurant ownership changed, the dining room cleanliness went "south." The floors are filthy. A year ago, we asked the waitress why aren't the floors clean? She said the owner said not to clean them until closing time. We went back two weeks ago for breakfast and almost walked out seeing that the floors were littered with food, napkins and too much crud. It made us question the sanitation of the kitchen and food. We will not eat there again. read more

Stopped in on our usual trip between Minneapolis and Wausau... Stopped here as a kid but usually pass it by because we don't "have time" for a real meal. This is the classic old American truck stop. A little bigger than most diners with a much larger menu and breakfast all day long. The service was good and fast. Even though they were busy our food came out in minutes. The food was good, not great. The noodles in the chicken noodle soup were like mom used to make, but the rest of the soup was bland. I don't understand how this restaurant has such a good rating. My boyfriend and I stopped here while driving across country. He got a salad and I got a turkey club. His salad was wilted iceberg lettuce with a few green olives, onions, and what seemed like really old feta. He asked for oil and vinegar for dressing, and we were surprised when what was delivered was what I can only assume was watered down vegetable oil and white win vinegar. Totally inedible. My sandwich, while large, was so unbelievably dry. I took one bite and I couldn't eat anymore. I ended up only eating my soup, which tasted like canned campbell's soup, and some french fries, which tasted like frozen bagged fries. Both of us ended up throwing away most of our food. We have stopped there twice while passing through. Food is pretty good and the service is great. Breakfast is decent, wholesome and reasonable priced. Food - Pancakes are great here. Breakfast burrito is outstanding. Have only had breakfast here so I can't speak for other meals but if breakfast is any indication, the rest should be good. This place is GREAT - it's everything you would expect from a small town restaurant that cares about their customers, and wants them to come back - instead of going to the McDonalds which is 500 feet away. I stopped there on 3 occasions this past summer on road trips. One time for breakfast, and twice for lunch. I ordered off the special board all 3 times. Excellent fried chicken - beef barley soup, excellent meat loaf, mashed potatoes and cream of potato soup. Home made mashed potatoes with a few lumps - just the way they should be. Don't forget to save room for the pie - many varieties - all made in house - the ones I had - apple - lemon and cherry - were just great. I enjoy the the look of the restaurant. The Service is nice and it is filled with great people, very homey. What I do not enjoy however is the food. Do not bother with their omelets! My sister and I bought omelets which look very appealing on the menu. Who would ever think Thorp, Wisconsin, would have one of the best breakfast restaurants in the state? What a fantastic find! If you are on your way to Door County, the Thorpedo is a must (1/2 hour east of Chippewa Falls). Huge breakfast for two, milk and coffee was less than $23.00. It has some good food and desserts. But the downfall is the small parking lot. You seat yourself. Sometimes the tables are still sticky from the people before you. Not to mention the service is slow. read more

My wife and I met our Daughter-In-Law here to switch vehicles. We had the fish fry which was good but not great as other reviewers have posted. My D-In-Law had waffles and eggs and she was very happy with them. Service was average as we needed to ask for extra water after the initial "check up" to ask about our food. It was a friendly place to dine. Quantity and price were very good. I decided to have the bread pudding. It was both very good and a disappointment. The flavor for the most part was delicious. However, about every 3rd or 4th bite there was a strange flavor. It turns out that a caraway bread must have been used as an ingredient in the pudding. This turned a great dessert into a "failure." I have never experienced bread pudding that utilized caraway (possibly caraway rye?) in the recipe. read more

If you are looking for a clean, reasonably priced place to stop for a nice meal...this is the place! We were lucky enough to find this little gem on a recent road trip. It was perfect for our needs...quick, but not a greasy fast food chain.
