Seriously when I say intimate, I mean every seat in this place guarantees a good view of the stage. I will be checking their website for shows as this was a very nice experience!

About a week before the show, I received and email that informed me of free parking at each show in their garage, which is almost unheard of when going to the theatre! We arrived about 30 minutes before the show started to see the theatre and it is beautiful! There could not be a bad seat in the whole place! We were in row G on the lower level and it was a great view!! The whole cast of the play was so fun and great at acting! I enjoyed the performance here just as much (if not more than) a show in the city at some of the larger theaters!! At the show, I was blown away by the set production, costumes, and most of all, the quality of the actors. Since then, our other daughter has also joined Showtime and we are 17 shows in! If you are looking for a place for your child to have experience with on stage productions, you can't go wrong with Ms Jackie. I think she truly supports her casts, and also has very high expectations for her shows- there is dedication and work involved to be a part of Showtime. Ms Jackie will support them every step of the way! As our girls have gotten older, they have also been able to have the experience of working backstage and in the booth, which gives them other skills and a real appreciation for what it takes to make a production happen. Not to start off a review by venting, but a little personal touch on why I'm so upset right now…read moremight go a long way in understanding why this is a one star review. I have personally been going through quite a bit lately that has led me to purposefully drag myself out of my apartment and channel my life frustrations into healthy activities and ventures. Between travel, trying to find a cat to adopt, and other every day oddities, I decided that I wanted to get back into an old hobby of mine: dancing. What could go wrong, right? I took ballet at a young age and was encouraged to stop, as I looked like a "flat piece of cardboard flapping in the breeze." When I got older, I dabbled in dance in high school, and went on to become a professional mascot for some years. Dancing isn't something that I find hard, and many routines, I am able to easily memorize, and have a lot of fun with. But, you know, I haven't learned an actual serious routine in human-form in nearly 7 years. Relevant. Today, I ventured to SoReal after being advised by Yelp that this would be a great place for "beginners" to come and "learn how to dance." Let me advise you: there was no learning HOW to dance, rather... after 10 minutes of the class, at least 10 eight-counts were shoved down my throat and I realized, I am being taught A dance. One must learn to dance before being taught an actual dance. So, you know, I took my cardboard-flapping body and left the studio mid-class. This wouldn't have happened if SoReal did a few items off the basic customer service checklist. First of all, when I arrived at 4:30 pm for a 5:00 pm class (early to ask questions, get info, etc.) the door was locked and a very bland young man answered the door. He let me in, and was not welcoming or cheerful or anything at all. I was obviously uneasy and frankly, a little shy, to be out doing something so bold after having spent the last few months hiding under a Calvin Klein comforter, downing margarita wine, while binge watching Grey's Anatomy. Despite my personal issues, kindness is a universal language that this man was obviously not fluent in. He did nothing to sell the studio or class to me, not phased whether I stayed or went. He did assure me that anyone attending this class would likely be their first class, and that you don't need any prior knowledge of dancing to attend. So, I went with it. There were about 10 people in my class, none of whom were very friendly. They stayed mostly to themselves during the warm up and stretching, which was fine by me. But the instructor was a very heavy-set young lady who seemed to be gasping for air after the set of stretches. Then, she played us a clip of the song we'd be learning the choreography to, and within seconds, she was shouting, "And then you do this! This! And this!" First of all, have you ever heard of an 8-count? Do you know how to break it down for us "beginners?" And when you picked on the little Asian guy in the class for adding his own style to a move, did you mean to insult him? I had all these questions streaming through my head as the instructor sped up the pace on a choreography that was FAR from beginner. We didn't practice with music through any of this. I finally gave up about 20 minutes in the class. I wasn't enjoying myself. It wasn't a beginner choreography (or even a good choreography at that). No one was at the front desk when I left, so I was unable to get a refund on my lousy $12. Basically, I left here feeling like I paid $12 to feel even more badly about myself. Thanks SoReal for keepin' it real.

The rows of seats are graduated like a small movie theater. The lighting was great. The actors wear mics to enhance the sound. The offer popcorn and snacks for purchase. You can also purchase bottled water. If you want an alcoholic drink, you must purchase a "Stageworks" tumbler for $20. It comes filled with your drink of choice on the first round and then you pay for the addition drinks with a by the glass cost. You can bring the tumbler back each time. There was a little bit of a wait at intermission for the bathrooms. Of course, us ladies always have to wait no matter the venue. The staff were great in assisting us to the other more hidden restrooms. Everyone was friendly and the night was terrific. The theater is in a shopping center. Parking is free. You can buy tickets online and then pick them up at will call.

It will cost you $12 to park. The good thing about the parking is it was super organized so even though there were long lines of cars trying to park, the lines were moving; and once I had paid, the attendees directed me where to go and it took me less than a minute to park. Before you can enter the Grand Chapiteau, you have to go through your typical security measure. There are no metal detectors but they will look inside your purse if you have one. I was here with my sister and she didn't have a purse so we didn't even get checked. She did have a jacket on her but they didn't check it. This means you could sneak in your own snacks/drinks should you be inclined to. Why would one be inclined to sneak in their own snacks/drinks? Well, a bottled water/soda will run you $5. Nachos will run you $10. A Cotton candy will run you $8. Hot dog will run you $7. You see where I'm going with this? If you're coming here with your family (kids, wife, girlfriend, whatever), then you be better be ready to be dropping some $$$$. As for the show, it's your typical CDS stage/seating. You have the round stage with the seats surrounding them. I was lucky enough to get good seats to the right side and three rows from the stage so I was able to see everything clearly. If you opt to sit toward the back, some times you can't even see the faces of the performers clearly. The show started at eight on the dot. Some of the performances are pretty typical CDS where it would amaze you what a human body can do with training (contortionist, balancing act, juggling). Some of the other acts were more creative (invisible circus, finger dancing, animal impression). One act in particular was a combination of both where you have this dude playing yo-yo in the middle of the stage, but holy cow, he could control them yo-yos like they were a part of his body. I felt like he should have been competing in international yo-yo championship or something. All in all, I was happy with the show. This was also my sister's first Cirque Du Soleil and so everything was brand new to her and she was thoroughly impressed with the performances. CDS is always a fun event to go to and I definitely will go to whatever other Cirque Du Soleil shows that would make a stop in Houston.

Houston parking was $12; I parked the furthest away and still it wasn't far from the tent. I was concerned that the AC might not be working from a heads up review 4 days earlier...but, thankfully the AC was on and blowing good!! Toilets looked like porta pottys but they actually had lights and hooks to hang your purse---speaking of...I walked in the stall and there hung a yellow bag and a Kurios souvenir! I was like...HOW can one forget ALL that? Turned it in to an employee...hope the lady got her stuff back. The seats are small and very close together...I chose an end seat so I'd only have one person beside me. My seats were stage right 8 rows back...awesome! Show was exciting...as usual, I was amazed. Do yourself a favor and attend a Cirque de Soleil soon...it's well worth the $$$

In case you missed virtual HAAPIFest in 2020 due to CoVid19 pandemic, movie screening is continuous…read morethroughout the year. The festival was June 4-14 with various topics daily shown on Eventive Virtual. Admission was free and it accepts donations during the screenings of over 40 Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) films and special LIVE and pre-recorded Q&As with filmmakers. I attended the preseason teaser screening in May. It was kind of fun until the movie stopped due to technical difficulties. Not sure if it was my internet connection or from the host's computer. I didn't stay to the end (maybe it was the end). The fun part was that participants can chat while watching the movie (I think that was the reason for crashing). I heard from the festival organizer, they can show more movies outside of festival. For example, ASIAN AMERICANS Documentary will be featured at the Virtual OCA National Convention this Sunday August 2nd. I'm waiting FERMENTED movie to be shown again. Because I want to host a virtual watch party with my foodie friends. What's 2021 gonna look like? I don't care it is gonna be virtual or in person, as long as Houston AAPI Film Festival continues forever.

Chester Gregory, a recording artist and Broadway alum, showcased a riveting performance which captivated our audience with a marvelous Rock n Soul Party for almost 90 marvelous minutes. Stevie Wonder's "Superstition", Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", "Shindig"- 60s musical variety show, Jackie Wilson's "To Be Loved", and more great hits. The audience sang all night with this fabulous Star! I could have sang all night!
