Thriftland should not be confused with the smaller province of Thrifttown up the street from it. They are significantly different. I bought a complete red suit there for $10. It was incredible and one of a kind, and included bonus cigarettes that had been smoked down to the filters that were in the pockets. What a steal! The suit was amazing and I hope to be buried in it, but will need to lose about 10 lbs. to fit in the pants before I die in order to realize this penultimate dream. They don't take credit cards, that's why they only get 4 stars. Other than that, they're pretty good. This store is so ridiculous! They act like they are doing the lords work or curing cancer. I wanted to buy something but because the staple which help the two garments together did not appear to be from their store, they wouldn't sell it to me. Granted these items were $2 each so they would have made $4 For example, underwear which clearly came in a pack of 5, they will staple two pairs together and each will be $2, the 5th pair will be $1, doesn't make sense, you get penalized for buying two at a time. read more

This is the kind of thrift store that makes thrift stores cool. A great selection of clothing and appliances. You'll find some cool furniture in here as well. Reading reviews about thrift shops on Yelp is like an emotional roller coaster. The deals they found or the people they checked out with might not be your bad luck too, so keep that in mind. It does smell funny, but not like dirty clothes or poop. It's a little messy, but if I walked into your room right now, would it looks like JcPenny's? Housewares are reasonable and much cheaper than Goodwill. Clothes are a little pricer, the average shirt was $7.99 and dresses ran $8-&12. This is a decent store. Be curious. Any good thrifter knows you work for your favorite finds. Otherwise, head over to South Congress, where they did the work for ya and charge you labor in the price! :) read more

Great spot for clothes and random small kitchen appliances. This place is huge and color categorized...so be prepared to spend a lot of time searching for your size. I will say, they're kind of thrift-nazis here, so be sure you follow the rules: 1. Cash only! 2. No food or drinks allowed. NONE. 3. If you find something without a tag, they won't let you buy it. It has to go through the re-pricing department, which takes at least 24 hours apparently. Seriously- you can offer them $20 for a t-shirt without a tag (they're usually like $5 max) and they still won't let you buy it. 4. Don't mouth off about any of the above mentioned rules, or they'll kick you out. Not saying it's happened to me before....(but maybe it has). read more

It's a thrift store. Like many other thrift stores it's a little smelly and a little dirty but it's also brimming with treasures. I was very pleased with the prices. They're what thrift store prices ought to be (ahem, Goodwill). Scored here today with a solid roasting pan and rack for a few bucks, mint condition kids board books for .25 - .75 cents and unused school supplies (notebooks, colored pencils, etc.) in a large bag for less than $2 bucks. The place looks tiny from the outside but it is very large inside and offers a lot of selection. They only take cash but they have an ATM up by the registers if you need it. I'm adding this to my list of thrift stores to search on a regular basis. read more

This is by far my FAVORITE thrift store in Austin. It's not that I always find awesome things here (I don't), or that it's organized well (it's isnt), but because it is the one thing a thrift store should always be: CHEAP. I'm mostly interested in vintage clothing, which they don't have a lot of, and most of the time I waste a couple hours and don't find anything. But for me, thrift shopping is all about the HUNT. All of these things I've bought for no more than $6 each: lace-up granny booties, a vintage sailor dress, high-waisted jeans from the '70s (which I sold to Buffalo Exchange for a small profit), a '60s button-up a-line dress, a pin-up style bathing suit, a bag full of bow ties (which I made into headbands). I'm all about quality over quantity. Why not a full 5 stars then? Two words: shopping carts. The aisles are narrow, the racks are full, the store is crowded, children are screaming and running around. This is fine, expected even. However, I don't know how many times I've become boxed in, literally trapped in Women's Blazers by two opposing grocery carts. Not to mention becoming snared by hangers while trying to squeeze by one of those things. It's like an obstacle course. Shopping carts, but no dressing rooms? It's a thrift store, suck it up and carry your stuff. read more

I have never seen the possibly of Thriftland until I went this weekend. Usually I go to thrift stores to look for clothes and shoes and haven't had much luck at Thriftland, but this past weekend I went to look for linens and decorations for my upcoming vintage themed wedding and I hit the jackpot. Beautiful quilts and glassware galore and I got all of it for 50% off! If you are looking for vintage housewares this place is an untapped market. Their color system is a tad confusing but I stopped a employee and she answered all my questions and was very helpful. They are cash only but they have an ATM right next to the front (it's a $2.50 service charge), so bring your cash and your thrifting eyes. I love you Thriftland. When I think back on it, probably one of the strangest things I've ever seen was a dumpster on top of a mountain. Why? Well, for starters, the road going up the mountain wasn't very good. Two, there didn't seem to be any reason to have a dumpster there as weren't any people living/working/visiting up there. Three, when you think mountain, you think fresh air--not a large container of decomposing material. Anyway, what does a dumpster on a mountain and Thriftland have in common? Not a lot actually, but it got me thinking about another paradox on my most recent visit to the discount shop: Where, exactly, does Thriftland get all their stuff from? I mean, Salvation Army and Goodwill I get. They have drop locations and drop boxes. They have distribution centers, stuff then goes to stores, etc. But Thriftland? When was the last time you saw a Thriftland drop box? I rest my case. Regardless, Thriftland is pretty comparable to Goodwill and Salvation Army, except maybe just slightly better when it comes to vintage clothing. The prices seem a buck or two higher, but I always find the coolest stuff (like jumpsuits, pimp boots with zippers on the side, and old western wear) that you wouldn't normally find elsewhere. So, how did the dumpster get on top of the mountain and why is it there? Where does Thriftland get all their stuff? Whatever the answer, Thriftland is a pretty cool place that's worth a look, especially if you're searching for something slightly rare and/or unusual. read more

Thrift land is a great place to find decent inexpensive goods. I would say they have goodwill quality merchandise and a portion of goodwill prices. The staff seemed very friendly even though they were working hard to pick up after customers. The clothing price were very reasonably priced and so was their wall art and furniture . The book collection they had for sale was not half bad. A good range of writers and good prices. They had a good selection of dishes many sets for sale. I don't go to thrift stores for clothes. I'm a big and tall man, which makes the selection of clothes that'll fit me pretty limited. But I do still shop at thrift stores because there's always neat STUFF. Lately I've been looking for decanters. Today I found a very nice crystal decanter for $10. I'm sure a similar one new would cost around $100. The fact that this place is right next to my house is probably one of the reasons I don't often carry cash. I picked up 12 items for $45 here. That's basically a whole new wardrobe for less than $50. All different kinds of stuff -- jeans, clothes for work, a dress for nights out, etc. I went back the next week and picked up a couple purses and some jewelry for I think 15 more dollars. Best clothing-budget investment I've ever made. I get compliments on this stuff ALL THE TIME from people who would never guess I spent all of $5 on my super chic knit dress. The sheer amount of clothing is so huge that if you're willing to spend a couple hours there, you can find more than one total gem. I'm not talking about some bullshit you can maybe pull off if you have the right accessories and pair it with the right layers and whatever, I'm talking about straight up awesome stuff you're psyched to wear. I even found Liz Claiborne pants in size zero petite. I can never find stuff in zero petite, even when I go to the department store willing to shell out real cash. Thriftland saved me from having to shop for office clothes in the juniors department! There are two reasons I can't give it five stars: no dressing rooms, and they only take cash. The cash-only thing is a minor inconvenience, but I would really have appreciated even just a screen to step behind as a dressing room. If you want to try something on, you have to pull some serious acrobatics in front of a tiny little mirror, like putting on a dress and then trying to change your pants under it and hoping you aren't flashing all the kids who are playing behind you but you probably are and what if they kick you out of the store and never let you come back etc etc read more

I know they run sales every day depending on the color of the tags. This time I could not find the signs that explained how it works, like I had seen in the past, but I did hear someone say on the intercom the special was 50% off purses and clothing items. There were a lot of kids and the smell was a bit stronger than in other thrift stores I visited today. The staff does not look as friendly and eager to help as the people working at the Salvation Army but once I asked a question, they were courteous and professional. Parking is tight since they share it with other stores but there was plenty of activity and I found a place in no-time. One thing that was kind of a bummer was that they do not take credit cards you must pay CASH. They do have an ATM machine right next to the registers in case you need it. Everything was pretty cheap. It's organized, clean, and they have a large selection. On certain days, there will be sales on some colors of the tag I found a great pair of levi's I plan on distressing, and three shirts I plan on cutting up and reviving. I came out with 4 new additions to my closet, and spent under $10. I would wear clothes that you can try on other clothes over it, because there aren't any dressing rooms. Oh, another thing I didn't like was the fact that it was cash only. There was an ATM inside, but I didn't want to pay a fee to use it. This is the best thrift store in Austin. Best selection for the best price. I've found everything from vintage cashmere sweaters and silk dresses to almost new designer brand jeans for under $5. (No $15 gap jeans here like you find at Goodwill...) There are also big bags of stuffed animals -some brand new- for very cheap. I buy them for my dogs. Yeah, there's no dressing rooms and it's cash only, but do you really want to be trying those clothes on before washing anyway? Lots of screaming children, but you can always tell them to be quiet and their parents will move them away from you. There are no fitting rooms, but the prices are generally so low, it's worth the risk to buy the clothes. (I know my sizes in different brands, so I use that as a reference for jeans and pants.) Ladies, bring your cash money and make sure you wear leggings and a cami under your outfit so you can try on in the aisles! The employees are the BEST. Many of them have been there a long while, they help me get my kid into her carrier before we leave and hold the door for me. Thirftland is a rather appropriate name, for the islands, peninsulas and isthmuses of clothing. Vast tracts of racks. I wasn't impressed with the selection, seemed like the leftovers from Ross that got donated to the Goodwill and donated again to Thriftland. I'm sure there are some simple bits of undiscovered hilarity in fashion. Been here a couple times and I used to like it until I realized how packed and how many kids are running around and crying , the clerks seem mean and idk the clothes seem old. They sorted by color sometimes they can be good , but they don't have dressing rooms and u can't return. So how will I even see if the clothes fit ? My aunty tipped me in on this place, saying it was the land of Kate Spade bags, talbots blouses, and Calvin Klein suits all for under $5. I thought she was high. I went there last week and was blown away. Indeed, there are designer duds, barely worn at all, for ridiculous prices. I bought a few banana republic dresses, Ann Taylor outfits, an Anne Klein suit and more, all for under $5 each. The only drawbacks are that there are no dressing rooms, so wear clothes that are conducive to trying things on top of. Plus, it can get crowded so come early and grab a cart. After scoring a crazy wardrobe for under $40, I brought my super picky husband here and he bought about 5 sweaters for under $20. He almost picked up a few suits. Some of the stuff has tags still on it and most was barely used. If you normally have an aversion to places like Goodwill, get over it and enjoy the crazy deals here. It makes me scoff at going to Target since the prices are cheaper for way better stuff. oh, bring cash, but they do have an ATM there. read more

This was my first time shopping at Thrift Land. I really didn't have a bad experience until it came time for check out. However, there were some items (shoes in particular) that were WAY overpriced for a thrift store. Several pairs of ladies sandals were 20 dollars and up. The pricing on men's shirts however, were on average 1-2 dollars less than goodwill. So I'm doing my thing and I find maybe 8-10 shirts and a few ties of which I am carrying, it was just a quick run, so I didn't grab a cart. I go to check out and the attendant either asked if this was my first time there or stated that this must be my first time there. I don't recall, but it was in a condescending tone. Anyway, the reason for the statement was because they wanted me to take all the shirts off of the hangers before checking out. I said, "Where am I supposed to put them? I'm carrying everything." She pointed to a rack that was behind the checkout line and suggested that I was supposed to have done it and place the hangers on the rack. I said,"I'm not going to do that. It isn't my job." Well...of course with my snide remark it was all downhill from there. We bickered at each other as she was removing the hangers. Then, when she rang it up, I pulled out my debit card and she says,"It's cash only" At which point I just walked out without making the purchase. You didn't get my purchase this time, nor will you in the future which is a bummer, because I spend on average $550 per month in thrift stores and that number is growing. I guess my business will continue to go to your competition. My point is, I'm not the employee. If you're going to keep your hangers, remove them yourself. I'm the paying customer (well, not this time, but I COULD have been). Also, the credit card has been around since 1958 and the debit card since 1966. That's 57 years at the time of this review. I've checked out the Goodwills and other thrift stores across Austin only to become a die-hard Thriftland fan. Nothing else equals it. I've turned on all of my friends and they are TL fanatics too. You have to be in the mood for this experience. It will wear you out....screaming kids, the smell, etc. but well worth IT for the hidden treasures you will find. I am a thrift store junkie, and this is by far my favorite thrift store. They ship all their stuff from Boston (I was there one time when the owner was bragging all about his place and overheard) and so you can find heavy coats and woolen sweaters (and sleds sometimes!) that you wouldn't be able to find at thrift stores that source from Austin. Just like any thrift store, you have to go on a somewhat regular basis if you expect to make some awesome scores. I find oodles of vintage dresses (60's hideous polyester nightmares that I sew into cute minis) and I've found a matched 5-piece set of Samsonite luggage from the 60's (black and white flower print) for $50. I see a lot of vintage gloves for small hands, vintage pyrex, and just last week I scored about a dozen vintage whiskey glasses for 5 bucks. If you're into appliances, they often have vintage blenders and mixers and you can plug them in to see if they work. I got an amazing Singer Genie sewing machine for $20 and a funny 60's manicure dryer in turquoise blue for a buck. They don't have a ton of records, but I've found some gems and also some nice rock n' roll 8-tracks. Bring your cash or suck it up when you have to withdraw from the pricey ATM within! read more

Thrift Land is as good as it gets for the thrifty! You have to work a little but it's worth it! The prices are *much lower* than other thrift stores (Goodwill, Family Thrift, Salvation Army, Savers) and they have half price tag days: linens on Monday and Tuesday, seniors on Wednesday, clothes on Thursday and Friday. I'm not sure what it is on the weekends. So cheapest and also possibly half price of cheapest. I'm always amazed to find clothes from J. Crew and Banana Republic and Ann Taylor that are barely used or even brand hew with the tags on them. You can't beat the selection or the prices. There's a sign behind the cashier's stand that says something like "Our customers prefer lower prices to dressing rooms". I agree. I'd rather try on a shirt over my clothes than wait 20 minutes for a disgusting dressing room like at Family Thrift. And for pants, you can try them on under an oversized skirt in the aisle. Get creative, people, its going to save you a dollar or two per item. I use sheets and blankets in sewing projects and Thrift Land has the best linens for the best prices. I get a lot of heavy flannel sheets from Lands End and other high end companies for less than $4. All of Thrift Land's merchandise comes from Boston, making it the very best place to buy 1 or 40 Red Sox t-shirts. The warm coat selection is awesome. I got a barely used wool houndstooth Kenneth Cole knee-length jacket for half off $14.99! Thrift Land is always clean and well-organized. And their staff is always nice and helpful. They are constantly putting out new items because they are so popular their merchandise moves fast. Three times I've put off purchasing an item only to return the next day to find it had been sold to someone else. There are some cons but none so great to merit loss of a star. The line to check out can get a little long at peak hours. Thrift Land is cash only. Also, they attach price tags with staples so you have to check your items to be sure the staples haven't left holes. read more

Let me preface this review acknowledging that when it comes to thrift stores, I'm aware that the experience is often going to be less than stellar and that I shouldn't expect the same level of store cleanliness as a local boutique. When I envision a 5-star thrift store I'd expect a store that had a good variety at a reasonable price, items that were in good condition, employees that keep the store relatively tidy, and decent customer service if required. And on these points, I believe that Thrift Land does fall a little short. They seemed to have a fair amount of clothing for sale, but are lacking in home goods. The store isn't horribly dirty, but it did feel a little unkempt and disorganized. I didn't experience poor customer service as some of the other reviewers described, but their cash-only policy coupled with a $3 fee to use their in-store ATM seemed a bit like a rip-off. The one glowing positive? I found a small bar cabinet that was perfect as a restoration project. I may hesitantly be returning in the future. read more
