But worse--- trying to call and report/resolve the issue was the NIGHTMARE. From AI voice loophole options that hang up on you, to sending you to an overseas worker you can hardly understand with limited understanding, and limited ways of helping beyond "I'll update the system." I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding my recent rental experience at the Thrifty location at Pittsburgh International Airport from March 24-31. I have rented cars many times and take the process seriously, and unfortunately this was one of the most unprofessional experiences I've had with any rental agency. At pickup on March 24th around 10:00 AM, the two older employees working the counter were dismissive and unhelpful. When I declined the additional insurance coverage--after having already confirmed with my insurance company that I was eligible and covered --the woman at the desk laughed at me, and in a snarky tone asked, "What's your insurance?" When I asked about how tolls were handled, she didn't answer me. When I asked whether my card went through for the rental after using the tap card option, she replied, "How should I know? You should be able to see it." Her tone and attitude were embarrassing and unnecessary, especially during a process that should be straightforward and professional. Additionally, I did not receive the Chevy Malibu that I reserved. I was given a smaller Nissan, and no explanation was offered. When returning the vehicle on March 31st, the process was equally unclear. There was no guidance on where to go or what steps to follow. When an employee finally appeared, I asked if everything was good and if I was clear to leave. His only response was, "You're good, bro." Again, this felt unprofessional, especially considering how important it is to ensure no unexpected fees are added after the fact. I returned the car clean and filled with gas, exactly as instructed, but due to the overall poor communication and lack of professionalism from the staff, I am concerned about billing accuracy and would like confirmation that there are no additional charges pending. I am disappointed that this experience has left me unwilling to rent from Thrifty or its associated companies in the future. These people are crooks. I booked via Expedia. They took a $500.00 deposit since I do not have a credit card, and it's been over a week, and they still have yet to release the funds. Although they have possession of the rented vehicle for over a week. The guy who attended to me advised the hold will be released within 3 to 5 days. It's been over a week. Now I'm trying to speak to someone at their Corporate office and their claiming the funds have been released. So I ask them for some sort of proof of release to provide to my bank, and Thrifty is claiming they can't provide anything. So then I ask to speak to a supervisor, and no one is available (lol). Robbery at its finest. I don't understand how they could take the money out so fast but not issue it back in a timely manner. SHAME ON YOU, THRIFTY. Patently dishonest. I reserved a "special" car that they made available through Hotwire. From past experience, "special" car means that there is something "special" about it, such as a convertible, or a new, uncommon featured model like a Nissan Cube. I was promised, "Compact size or larger but priced low like a compact!" Well it made sense that mine was priced like a compact because it was nothing more than a compact (actually, a SUBcompact). It was an ordinary Nissan Versa, a small, somewhat uncomfortable car, with no "special" features and nothing else special at all. When I returned the car, the agent asked me how everything was. I said it was fine except for the deceptive advertising. She explained that it was not deceptive because "special" means that it is whatever they have available and it could've been an SUV! The fact that it was not an SUV, nor anything else "special" seemed to be lost on her. She continued to argue with me and said that a Nissan Versa was a midsize car, so in fact, it was a "special" car. Now, if you go to any website at all that evaluates cars, you will see that a Nissan Versa is listed as a SUBCOMPACT car. The agent said that nevertheless, Thrifty considered it a midsize car. I eventually became tired and increasingly frustrated arguing with her and suggested that perhaps it is not a best practice to argue with customers. At this, the agent argued with me about whether or not she was arguing. This made me think of the Monty Python sketch, "Argument Clinic". So I left, but I will not do business with Thrifty at this or any other location again. read more

Had a week rental here booked through Hotwire - also a "special" deal like another Yelper. Don't have high expectations and you won't be disappointed. You're basically booking for whatever car they have on the lot. I didn't feel misled at all with my booking. No issues, except the car had the maintenance light on, so I'm not sure how on top of things Thrifty is at inspecting their cars. Staff was nice. I found it weird, though, that you just get into your car and go, rather than passing through a tollgate before leaving the lot like every other airport rental place I've been to.... read more

This wasn't a horrid experience, but I have experienced better. I booked this online ahead of time and chose Thrifty because they have Toyota and Toyota usually has more head room. They prompted me to purchase additional insurance to cover loss-of-use and since it was for only 1 day, I opted to get it. Day of rental: picked up baggage at carousel, proceeded to Thrifty. Thrifty was closed but directed me to Dollar. Stood in line at Dollar and due to lack of more than 1 agent, I waited for 30 minutes. The agent tried to sell me on insurance for loss-of-use, but I told him I had already purchased it. He then told me it was a bad idea because now I'd be dealing with a THIRD PARTY to settle disputes. I should wait and buy it at the airport. I asked why it would be on the website as a recommendation if he was saying the product they recommend is bad. He backed off. I got my Toyota and everything was fine. Return was quick and was exactly what was quoted. HOWEVER ... The additional loss-of-use insurance has two charges on my card. Does Thrifty correct this, or did I get the better advice from Dollar Rental to avoid the dreaded THIRD PARTY. read more

Needed a car for a long weekend. I booked it online and chose the pre-pain option. When I landed, I got my luggage from the carousels and then right next to them were the desks for the car rentals. The employees were efficient and quick, and I paid my remaining balance and they gave me my keys. I walked outside to the garage and the employees out there were really nice as well, offered to answer any questions I had about the car, etc. I just hopped in the car and went on my way! It was a newer car and was decently clean (it's a rental car with hundreds of people using it so I don't expect it to be the cleanest thing in the world). Do NOT do business with Thrifty car rental, or sister companies Dollar Rent A Car and Hertz. At the counter, the rep "sold" me insurance for a week without mentioning the product. It doubled the cost of my rental and after I brought it to their attention, they refused to acknowledge their mistake and make things right. Thrifty rental car company charged me $41.17 for the Fuel Purchase Option even though I TWICE told the agent at the counter when I picked up the car that I did not want it and would return the car with a full tank of gas. She slipped the charge into my rental agreement and I did not catch it when I signed the agreement. I brought a gas receipt with me when I returned the car showing that I filled up the gas tank, but the agent that checked in the car did not ask to see it, so I threw it in the trash. The receipt I received from the rental car company after returning the car clearly shows the gas tank was full. I attempted to obtain a refund on this bogus charge through the rental car company, but they will not give me a refund without the receipt. What a scam. Avoid this unethical rental car company. read more

If I could give them zero stars I would. I rented from them a few weeks ago. I was travelling with a small child. When I was leaving I noticed a tire pressure light was on. Of course there's nobody at the exit. So I park the car with several folks behind me to look for a lot attendant. After a while I located him and he came and looked. He kicked the tire and said it's fine. It's likely low from speed bumps. So, I took his word and drove off. Within 15 minutes we were stranded with a flat. The car had no spare tire. So, I waited on hold almost an hour for roadside assistance. They finally answer and tell me it will be an hour wait for the tow truck. So, I wait with my small child whos weary from travelling, hungry and generally scared. An hour and a half later no one has arrived and its getting dark. I call back and wait forever. They tell it will be another hour. I'm now at 9 pm with a am all child who hasn't eaten since breakfast. The person on phone tells me I can ride back with my small child on the tow truck when it arrives so I can get another car. No. That's not happening I said. So she said I could arrange for my own ride. Leave the keys in the car and my contract would be cancelled. Surprise!!! I get a bill for the full rental several days later. I made a call to ensure this was a mistake. It has. Been several more days and the charge is no longer pending but permanent. I'm calling my bank tomorrow to file a dispute. This is not only reckless and neglectful, but it's a slap in the face to get a bill after three assurances I wouldn't. Don't ever rent from these jerks. I'll get it resolved, but I felt strongly that people should know what type of shady operation they run. read more

No surprises, car was ready and waiting and in fine condition. Return was easy.

Made a reservation online and was quoted $355.00 , when we arrived to pick up the rental we were told the price was $960.00!!! If it had been a small price increase there wouldve been no problem, but a $605.00 price increase is ridiculous. They claim to charge a 40% tax but that is something that should be addressed when I made the reservation. We also paid for a child carseat rental. They refused to instal it for us and we were left to do it ourselves. After installing it , which took well over an hour, we were forced to break fast due to a car accident in front of us. Our baby flew out of the carseat into the front of the car because they gave us a childseat who's straps were CUT!!!! Luckily our child was not serious hurt but she was shaken up and scared w a few bruises. Our flight back home was delayed a few hours due to the hurricane damages in Florida where were from and we called thrifty to ask if we would be allowed a few extra hours since the flight was delayed. They want to charge us another $155.00 for an extra 2 hours. This has been the worst experience we've ever had read more

Horrible. Agent upgraded me at $40 for 4 days to a bigger car with more trunk space and gave me a Kia Scout! Car was filthy. Returned car 4 hours late. Called in and quoted an additional day at $29.95. When I brought it back they tried to charge me $500 as I "broke my contract". FInally talked to Manager? reduced to $317 which was still $80 more than should have paid. All in all a HORRIBLE experience, car etc. Never again. My son got a brand new JEEP for 1 extra day for $25 less from Payless. Thrifty is not the thriftiest or best deal! Nor are they honest.
