By far, this is the cutest/most fun workout I've ever had. I had a free class and Brian made the email exchange so seamless and was so welcoming when I showed up. The studio is a little small but overall, the class is very tight-knit and team work-oriented. I highly recommend you to change into your workout clothes before you get here because they don't have a locker room. Instead, there is a bathroom across but space is very tight. Brian is like the high school PE teacher with the cheesy retro gym outfit (he even had the whistle!) that you're just itching to give a makeover, which is all part of the fun of this place. Jack was co-instructing the class, which was at their "Varsity" level, and it was a nice workout overall. Not as intense as some of the workouts I've done, but it was just right, given the high amount of people in the class. My group was divided unevenly, so it was a bit harder to rotate and do circuits in sync with the other groups, but it worked out. The class is a mix of cardio, dumbbells, and rowing and will sort of remind you of your glorious high school days in PE. read more

Jenna and Sam were amazing coaches for our corporate field day in NJ! All of the games were interactive, and there was something for everyone (especially since we have a few folks who prefer non-physical games). The games definitely brought out a competitive side in our employees that I have never seen, in a good way! We plan to have an annual field day moving forward with Throwback Fitness because of how amazing Jenna and Sam were and how fun and engaging the games were. I can't recommend Throwback Fitness enough - it's a great, somewhat silly place for a great workout and great team building! Throwback Fitness is a group fitness place in Koreatown. It's not a huge location, but it is definitely well-equipped for the job, and it can fit ~20-30 people. As the name suggests, the classes are designed to be a bit retro/childish in a good way - think dodge ball and marshmallow tower building with athletic components. I'm generally pretty skeptical of group classes, but the workouts here are superb. The core exercises here - squats, burpees, etc. - are great, and the instructor we had clearly knew what he was doing. Rowing machines, free weights, and other accessories are sometimes used to augment the workout, meaning that the workout never feels repetitive or unoriginal. The "throwback" aspect to all of the workouts may seem a bit silly on paper, but it keeps the class moving in a great way, and the teamwork aspect is immensely fun as well. read more

Throwback is an awesome group outing. I've participated in their public classes as well as their private events which they most often do for corporate/company team building or private friend groups like birthday parties. They have a lot of variety and customization based on what the group wants. For their in-person events, I've played games that are pretty active and others that aren't very physical at all - one of my favorites involves music trivia which Throwback can run with or without exercise... it's great either way! I most recently tried Throwback's virtual offering where they run games through Zoom. It's a great way to bring fun into Zoom meetings. The coaches are great at structuring and leading the activities, keeping everyone engaged and having fun the whole time. I highly recommend Throwback if you're looking for a fun, unique team event that everyone of all ages will enjoy! read more

I can't wait watch this business grow with popularity and as a business! The idea is well thought out and executed to culminate a fitness class that brings people together for a great workout. Brian and Ryan are knowledgeable, encouraging and most of all so friendly! I was so impressed with the personal experience which included a follow up email the next day to my friend and I. How they remember everyone's names I will never know! Exercises are done individually as well in pairs and groups. We played "musical chairs" and corn hole. Did a 730am class with Ryan (booked through class pass). It had a fun description but wasn't sure what to expect but it was good! I say good because it wasn't a crazy workout where I was dripping sweat and will be sore all week but it wasn't easy enough that I should have just stayed home.. Definitely had me moving around. The class is small -- today was 6 people -- which is good because for part of the class we used the rowing machines while our partner did sit-ups/burpees and I never used a rowing machine before so Ryan was able to help with my form. We started off guessing whether songs were from 90s or 2000 which was fun.. then we did some workouts that weren't as fun (but good workout) then we played dodgeball. Great full body workout, very knowledgeable and positive instructors, friendly class feel (not intimidating at all). What you'll get: 45 minutes of exercise sets, including: Burpees Jumping rope Kettle bell swings Lunges Planks Rowing machine Running Sit ups You rotate through different sets of exercises after the instructors demonstrate and provide explanation of each activity. Sets are done individually, in paired up/relay style, or in group rotation. There's a great team-oriented feel to the workout as well. (Our class size was eight people, plus two instructors.) Bonus: Thowback Fitness also has great throwback music playing throughout the workout ! Hip-hop, rock, the essentials of great old school beats. My boyfriend and I use Classpass for our weekly workout sessions together and just kind of found Throwback Fitness during a search for a new class. We both loved the classes for a few reasons. 1- It's a great workout 2- Ryan is a great motivator 3- There are alot of competitions (and we love to win) It is also located right near Penn Station, so we both like that, as commuters. Coach Ryan and Coach Kyle hosted Virtual Recess for our Controller group this afternoon. We had several hours of accounting meetings and they saved the day with a much needed fun and interactive closing event! After months of working from home it was so nice to actually engage with my coworkers in such an original format! Throwback Fitness held a virtual event for our company during the Covid Pandemic and it was amazing!! They brought so much fun energy and made the experience completely painless from booking, scheduling the times, to actually running the Zoom meeting with 25 people all in different locations. If you're looking for a fun corporate event to help your employees unwind and take some stress out of the day, I could not recommend them enough!! My husband and I were in town visiting and we were in need of a good sweat! We found Throwback Fitness on yelp and gave it a shot. Booking a class was a breeze. The schedule and location was ideal. There are no frills.. you get in get a good workout in and leave feeling accomplished. The class itself was small in size and perfect for the room size. The exercises has me sore in all the right places. It goes by quick. Ryan throws in some fun here and there which makes you forget your exercising. Ill be back once back in the city! read more

five stars for my instructor Java... He's so fun and motivating and made the class go by SO fast. I find that some instructors at these boutique fitness studios are intimating and sometimes even "clicky" but Java was so friendly, approachable, and positive. I widh Java was my co-worker, BFF, coffee barista, hair dresser, I could go on... haha... To the point he is Very likable now why I knocked off two stars... I'm kind just getting back into working out after taking a three month "break". I'm not entirely "out of shape" but i'm definitely a beginner. That being said I've taken a few of the throwback and strength classes here and both incorporated a "team" aspect to the class. I can see how it could be motivating because you don't want to let others on your team down, But it also can get pretty frustrating, especially when you're in a class with regulars. I really wish they had some sort of beginners class! I wouldn't recommend throwback fitness if you're trying to get into the groove of things -- I think these classes are better suited for those who work out regularly . read more

Amazing! I planned a private outing for a group of 20 people from work. Brian made planning the event incredibly easy. I also specifically asked that they integrate a lot of teamwork so that people could get to meet each other which they absolutely did. They customized the workout to the level of physical fitness that we wanted (which I described as "some former college athletes who still workout daily, and some people who are really good at sitting at a desk for 16 hours straight) and they managed to accommodate this perfectly. We showed up as a massive group for the class a few minutes late (whoops) but Ryan was great about it. We started out with some light warm ups in a circle and some easy getting to know you activities. Then we played 4 or 5 more "games" over the course of the rest of the class and definitely worked up a sweat. Ryan demonstrated each workout before we did it made every part fun. The hour class was over in what felt like no time. I can't recommend this place (and especially Ryan & Brian) highly enough! The studio is on the second floor and is easy to get to. The space is large and comfortably fits the class size. They have cubbies on the side to put your stuff in. read more

Brian and Ryan are rockstars!!! I have tried a ton of gym classes with my wife over the 8+years of us being together and the key word there is tried. I have never actually consistently gone to any of her other classes after trying but this is a unique exception. Brian and Ryan are great leaders, creative, nice, fun to be around and always encouraging. I come from a football background so I would actually like them to yell at me more...lol. Things that I love: 1. No drama 2. 45 minute classes 3. Because of the games I have never once looked at the clock 4. The games 5. The competitiveness of the class 6. It goes by so quick but you feel sore and still had a great workout These are totally reasonable compared to other classes in NYC in terms of price. If you grew up anytime from 1980 to the early 2000's the posters on the wall and music being played are great. There is always a mix of beginners, athletes, regulars and newbies. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming into the classes. I do a lot of running, basketball and work out early before the work day starts. You may have seen something like this on FB recently. Caveat was we had to do 10 mountain climbers before being able to run and drop a flag. And if we weren't in the front of the line we were doing jumping jacks. So awesome... Okay. Classpass alert! New favorite fun fitness frenzy in NYC. Throwback Fitness is easily the most fun workout I have done in my life (compared to Tone House which is the hardest one I have done in my life where I thought I would literally die). Admittedly, I was skeptical walking in here as it seemed to offer gamification of the fitness world. WTF does that even mean? It could be anything, right? But I kept an open mind, walked in, was quickly impressed by the whole thing, and ultimately ended up with a seriously tough workout due to the competitive nature of the class. Read on for the deets: The studio is decently sized (my class had approx 15 people and it seemed perfect in terms of space even with rowers sprawled out). It is located on the outskirts of Koreatown which makes it very accessible from just about anywhere in the city. You walk in and immediately understand why it is called throwback fitness. There is a board with your workout that has four quadrants (re[presenting the four parts of class) including (warmup, recess, phys ed, and homework). You get the point. You are being thrownback to high school. I really loved the 80s and 90s posters that line the walls (Ferris Buheler, Old School, Happy Gilmore, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Arnold, Point Break, Wayne's World, and of course Dirty Dancing. There is also a Zach and AC Slater Saved by the bell "Beefcake" lunch box. Hilarious. really give you that "throwback" feel. Our instructor was Ryan who is also one of the owners so props to him for starting up such an awesome place. As an added note I saw these weighted balls painted into ninja turtles and water guns. Next time I am back I really want to get freaky with those items. My class was still extremely awesome so let me break out the structure: 1) Warmup and stretch together 2) 60s vs 70s - Basically instructor played a song and you performed either mountain climbers or squats depending on what era you though the song was from. If you get it right you do jumping jacks and if you got it wrong you dropping to the ground for burpeeees. I don't know anything about music so your boy had to do a ton of burpees. 3) Partner up and while one partner went through a set of kettle bell activities the other hit the rower. We would rotate each time the person on the kettle bells finished. We competed for 1st, 2nd, 3rd against all other teams to see which team could row the furthest distance. 4) AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) for a few minutes of core focused work 5) Team competition - Goal was to acquire poker chips by completing a set of a specified workout. More sets = more chips. 6) Redemption round - steal chips from other teams by completing tasks. Certain workout allowed you to steal a certain colored chip. 7) A final team relay race for class title. We lost badly :( My one critique is the fact that the studio has no showers. This prevents me from taking an AM class. The real cherry on top that brings this class up to 5-stars was the e-mail I received from the owner. He referred to specific elements of my rowing form and a reference to the guy I was partnered with during the partnership competition. He also added that they will do corporate events which could be extremely fun to shoot coworkers with water-guns or do a squat off against a Senior Director (hmmmmmm). Anyways, I was very impressed with his note. Going that extra mile to associate our names with the specific workout shows that Ryan truly cares about both his business as well as his clientele. I contrast this to your typical instructor who may say "Great job today, bud" which is the most generic impersonal thing you can say to someone after a fitness class. Not only did Throwback set a new bar for my fitness class but it also set a new bar for the way I will now think about customer service and interpersonal communication. I look forward to coming back. And if there were showers I would certainly consider a separate package. Sorry for the novel but I hope you get the chance to try it. read more

I've been on a mission of trying every rowing based class in NYC for a while (why? because I did rowing/crew for 7 years). So TBF has been on my to-do list for a long time. I finally ended up going 2 months ago and wish I had gone sooner! I didn't expect to like the 45 minute team based workout so much but I did. The class starts with introductions and then is split up into recess and phys ed (team aspect!). All the workouts have varied when I've gone here. Workouts always utilize the rower in some way or another and some competition team aspect. In one workout, we grabbed a partner and the partners had to switch between the rower and a floor workout of pushups and burpees and the team who had the most meters rowed one the game. I've also done a flip-cup type workout once which was my favorite. I love the team aspect because it has pushed me much farther in my workouts. I love the workout so much I brought my sister and boyfriend to class once. My sister obviously loves classes just as much as me and this class was no exception. My boyfriend is so anti-class and only lifts weights. So to say his ass was kicked was an understatement (the rower provides lots of cardio aka a sweatiest). I kept telling my boyfriend he would like it but he was like whatever. He ended up really liking the workout and the guys, Ryan and Brian ("they were really motivating"). So yes ladies, bring your boyfriends. Dudes, this workout is fun and not just for the ladies. Ryan and Brian teach the classes. I guess you can say that Brian is the head coach and Ryan is the assistant coach. Both are super nice guys. Ryan tends to be a bit more soft spoken but he does control the playlist and points (I think does the tweeting you see online and the pics that go up on the facebook and twitter accounts) while Brian motivates and leads the workouts. The studio is located currently in Titan Fitness but rumor has it they'll be moving into a permanent location soon! Right now they teach classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday morning. Hopefully they add more classes to the schedule when they get their permanent studio since I can only go on Tuesdays. Classes are $25 each drop-in. $19 for 1st timers, or the intro special of $35 for 2 classes (cheaper if you sign up for their newsletter and get a discount code). 5pack of classes for $110. These guys are legit. Ryan and Brian have created a great community and always make sure everyone feels welcome. No gymtimidation here! The workouts are always changing and they even offer some new specialized classes as well as classes with different levels of difficulty. But there is always one constant...the rower. I hadn't rowed much before taking Throwback, but they offer great instruction and I saw improvement after my first class. The rower has since become one of my favorite exercise machines. I have recently left NYC, but I guarantee I will be paying these guys a visit when I'm back in town. read more

Came here once when RackedNYC offered a free class. It was a lot of fun, made 45 minutes of a workout go by quickly. The instructors are great, it's a good way to meet new people, and it's a non-threatening environment. I didn't feel as if it was the most intense workout I've ever done, but it was up there. I wish the class was an hour long instead. Not sure how classes vary and if my experience was any different in attending the free session. Would like to try the class where they do beer pong?? Overall I would definitely recommend Throwback Fitness as an adjunct to your current routine to spice up your week, have fun, and meet new people! read more

Throwback Fitness class is broken up into team based workouts which push you to work harder without realizing it. That is, until you're done and your legs feel like jello. I took Brian's Monday evening class which was challenging and fun. Brian reminds me of your favorite high school coach that you don't want to let down so you keeping smiling despite the pain and push on through. (I won't give up, Brian!!!) The workouts do vary and the one thing you will discover is that time flies by. Go to Throwback even if you're completely drained from work and you just want to go home to face plant on your couch, and watch those last 3 episodes of that Netflix series you've been binging. If you're like me, and always took middle school gym a little too seriously, then the fun competitiveness of Throwback Fitness is going to appeal to you. Each class is 45 minutes and you start out every class with a warm-up where learn each other's names. That comes in handy because later you break into teams to compete in games rooted in workout moves. One of my favorites, Throwback Fitness Flipcup, has you compete with other teams in a series of moves culminating in a race on a rower. I've taken a few friends that are pretty mild-mannered and they've leaned into that competition hard. Brian, Ryan, and Java have cultivated a fun atmosphere to sweat in. Honestly, this is one of my favorite workouts in the city and the best part is it doesn't even feel like you're working out. read more

If you haven't tried Throwback Fitness, you don't know what you are missing! It's seriously one of my favorite fun workouts in the city. The workout is broken into 3 parts: Warm-up, Phys Ed, and Recess. Phys Ed is a partner workout where two individuals rotate between a rowing machine and floor exercises (~16 minutes). Recess (my favorite!) is a team workout modeled after a childhood game (i.e dodge ball, capture the flag, flip-cup, etc). Throughout the entire class, Ryan and Brian are constantly walking around the room providing form corrections and encouraging words. 45 minutes fly by so quickly that I almost wish the workouts are a bit longer! I think the best part about Throwback is the strong sense of community, team work, and humor. I always leave class with a big smile on my face. Wow!!! Gym was never THIS hard (but still fun). Beyond the usual heart pumping, brow sweating gym experience you would get in most places, this has the added competitive spirit in to the mix and that makes it worth trying at least once. Everything from push-ups to sit-ups to rowing to monkey in the middle...these guys really make you move your butts and break a sweat. Full body workout in a fun environment. Excellent class for the on-the-go-er as class is only 45 minutes. You will definitely feel the burn with the integrated high intensity intervals and the rowing machine cadio components. I had a great time during my first class and will certainly come back again. I took the Strength and Power class at Throwback Fitness via ClassPass and it was so much fun! I liked the icebreaker/warm up at the beginning where everyone introduces themselves while warming up. The workout portion was circuit style and tough. I did exercises with the trx ropes, dumbbells, and body weight. You do the best you can. I was sore for days! There was also a leader board challenge of the day to see if you can complete one of the exercises all the way through! The recess portion was very fun and challenging - each team challenged each other to see if they can complete certain exercises. It was a good, fun workout. TIPS - If you are coming from work, change into your workout clothes at the office before coming here. There isn't really a separate changing room, you'll have to change in the bathroom which is accessible by a key. read more

Definitely not surprised this has 5 stars on Yelp! Such a fun and unique class in the sea of standard yoga/spin/pilates classes available in NYC. I bought a 3 pack on Gilt after glowing reviews from my friend. I really like 3 things about the class. First, is that they are super personal about the whole experience. I was asked my name upon arrival (no biggie, lots of places do that), but they remembered my name throughout class and used it when correcting my form and encouraging me to cross the finish line. Then the day after class, I got a personalized email with very specific details from class that only pertained to me! So awesome they take the time to get to know you as an individual. Second, the class appeals to my Type A personality by incorporating mini competitions in each set of exercises. Whether it's who can do push-ups the fastest, row the fastest, or do the most burpees - the mini competitions makes you push yourself harder and makes the time go faster...because let's be honest....no one REALLY wants to be in a burpee competition ;). Third is of course the throwback element. The songs they play during class are from the 80s/90s, as are the decorations....and calling parts of the class phys ed/recess, who wouldn't be nostalgic about that? read more

Had such a blast this AM at Throwback. Brian really knows how to motivate you without being intimidating or mean. I love the concept of this place - high intensity intervals that are set to the tunes of Fat Joe while Will Smith peers over you. You will definitely get your fill of both cardio and strength. The rowing machine is so fun! Love the small class size and the fact that they will correct your form if you look like you don't know what you are doing (like me half the time). Try this place out. Went to throwback on class pass after a coworker recommended as a 'tons of fun but not joking around' workout. He was not kidding. I got a little nervous after catching a glimpse of '500 Burpees' as the 'recess' portion of class but it turned out to be pretty fun. Very team oriented - which is much appreciated by people on the lesser end of the athletic spectrum like myself. Rowing and kettle bell exercises were good to mix things up, Bryan and Ryan made rounds to make sure everyone was using the proper form and doing well. Bags/cornhole was fun as well, despite the push-ups and sit-ups required to shoot- but the workout was what I came for, and it definitely delivered! read more

Big Fan. I've been doing ClassPass now for about 3 months. So I found Throwback through them. Definitely a wonderful atmosphere, great people, knowledgable staff, and best of all, FUN! I've found a lot of studios where the rest of the people aren't friendly and it can make for a bad experience. Everyone at this class was high-fiving and saying good job. Since you work as teams, it encourages that kind of vibe. Workout included a decent amount of rowing, and plyometric circuits. Burpees, situps, jump ropes, pushup walks, squats, mountain climbers, etc. I'm definitely a little sore - so the workout overall was a good one. One of my favorite parts was the decorations with old school posters and the "throwback music!" Totally felt like I was back in gym class in the early 90s. These guys got it right. Great workout, instructors make it a point to learn your name and offer pointers (especially for beginners like me), and sooo much fun!! Great for those that work well under pressure and enjoy competition- definitely helped to push me further. Throwback Fitness has completely changed my life for the better. I've been attending with an unlimited membership for more than 2 years now, and I've never looked back! It's everything I look for in a gym: - very challenging workouts - fun! the workouts go by so quickly - encouraging coaches who pay attention to form - friendly and welcoming environment, where both regulars and first-timers feel at home - quantifiable results - Results are obvious. My body has changed, I'm stronger, I'm healthier, and I've built up endurance. Not only that, but my split times on the erg keep getting lower! - variety - between regular classes, core, strength, varsity (advanced), and Coaches workouts, I am constantly switching up the routine and challenging myself in different ways with every workout. The main cardio comes from rowing, which is one of the best low impact/full body workouts you can get! Rowing, mixed in with body weight exercises and/or kettle bells, free weights, plates, medicine balls and jumprope make for a challenging and efficient workout--all within just 45 minutes! The games in the second half of class are normally team-based, and add a fun/competitive element to the workout. TBF Flip Cup, Relay and Jam are some of my favorites! Recommended for all fitness levels. Definitely come check it out!! read more

I want to preface this be saying that i'm superrr picky about my fitness classes and i'm superrr pessimistic about the quality of the workout I am going to get when trying a new class. Throwback Fitness blew my expectations out of the water! I came to this class with a friend and we both didn't know what to expect. Our whole class was about 6 people that day, which I think is a nice number of people to create a competitive environment while also getting good tips from the instructor (Ryan). Below is a summary of our workout that day: - Warm up consisting of running, skipping, & stretching - A game to guess what the instructor was thinking. You could only ask a question after doing a series of mountain climbers and squats. - THE KILLER. 14 minutes of nonstop erging, jump roping, and burpee-ing. I'm a bit competitive and wanted to get the top distance for my team so I pushed myself to the edge every row. This was fun, but KILLER. Erging is one of the best full body exercises you can do, and I felt every inch of my body working for this series. - A game of who can get the most renegade rows (squat hold combos) - A game where the class was split into 2 and each team had to challenge the other to whether they can beat the number of reps on an exercise. I consider myself to be in pretty good cardio shape (I run consistently, do flywheel, and a bunch of other bootcamp classes) and I would say that I was exhausted after this. If you are competitive, you will get a great workout! read more

Throwbacks team is one heck of a team. From start to finish the planning and execution process was seamless. Throwbacks was more than willing to accommodate our special requests and made our field day for 200 people one that I will not forget. This is so far my favorite group fitness class I've found in NYC. It's effective but different. Workout itself is very down to basics (which is good), but it's done creatively. Throwback makes me want to be there (instead of just doing that same workout at a gym myself.) Classes are competition/teamwork based. Each classes I've taken were different (so there is that "what's next" anticipation that gets you excited) but always effective and good. It does feel a lot like fun, creative and safer version of Crossfit. Instructors will watch your form and coach you along, always coming up with more fun approach to switch between traditional reps. They will not neglect your poor form (which myself keep on neglecting because somehow that makes me feel like I can maybe win for once?!) Only downside for me is that they don't have a shower or changing room. (So it's nearly impossible for me to come for their morning classes before work.) I tried Throwback Fitness for the first time last week. I've never used a rowing machine before, but Brian and Ryan were great instructors- so by the end of the class I felt like I had a good grasp on it. They set class up in a team competition, which was great for me- it pushed me a lot harder since I don't particularly enjoy losing. I left class feeling like I had an awesome workout and a good time. I've been to plenty of workout studios in NYC ranging from those that are a little too trendy for their own good, to those which are basically make-shrift companies working out of a basement, and I can say Throwback Fitness is one of the most original / fun exercise studios i have been to in a really long time. I love fitness studios which emphasize competition and Throwback Fitness incorporates competition by incorporating the use of a partner, throwing in games throughout the workout, and even having an NCAA-like tourney for those who go to the class regularly (at least currently due to the timing). The reason why this class stands out is due to the creative concepts Brian and the team put forth to make you forget you are actually working out, its really about the culture the team has instilled during the session on top of layering in additional games throughout the class making it genuinely fun to be apart of. This is definitely a must class to go try out - and from the looks of it everyone who was at the class I attended seemed to be a regular so certainly is a keeper in your core-class schedule. read more
