The staff is always super friendly and welcoming, which is hard to maintain throughout shifts. Been there multiple times, always helped or greeted quickly and with personality. But the food never tastes fresh. I've gotten the Austin club salad multiple times and this time was my last. The veggies all have that old refrigerator taste to them. Even the odor in the shop isn't the freshest. If they focused a little more on ingredient quality, I'd go back. read more

I believe it was my sister that first got me hooked on Thundercloud Turkey Subs and I can not imagine a day before that! I love that there are Thunderclouds all over Austin, so if I'm ever out and about and need a default lunch, this is my go-to spot! It's local and so Austin. I usually frequent this particular location, since it's close to work. I can walk there and you can call in an order a head of time, if you're in a rush. 2 things I love the most, walking + efficiency! The workers at this location are the best. Not just because I go there all the time, so they always grab my order the minute they see me walking in. They're always friendly and always seem like they love the rush of lunch time, rather than hate their lives/job. Pretty much any of the sandwiches are going to be good, just depends on what your tastes are. I always go for the turkey sub with everything on it! I also really love their bread here! And the last thing I love about Thundercloud is that they sponsor/hold the 5 mile Turkey Trot every year and it's a sister tradition for my family. For $15, this sandwich did not taste fresh at all. It was so expensive and it tasted like a school lunch sandwich that had been sitting in my bag all day. I was very disappointed for it being my first time. They charged me 0.30 cents per topping and only put four small mushrooms slices etc. I told them I was allergic to Onions and wanted cucumbers instead and still got charged. They skimmed every topping and the lettuce looked brown. The cheese looked like it had been out for a while. I am surprised people buy this when they can just go to Subway and get unlimited and generously portioned toppings. read more

We've been coming here for a year or so and the food is always good and the orders are always right. The nada chicken sandwich and salad taste like real meat. Mostly the service keeps us coming back though, the people are always funny and kind even when the lines get long. Yesterday, Raymond (I think? I was one tutorial away from sticking my BIC pen in my ears to block the monotoned voice. I swear my eyes were bleeding from the bright lights and the 40 cups of java it kept to keep me awake. And is it necessary to keep the conference room -20 degrees? Seriously? You can only imagine my delight when I walked into Thundercloud. The seating area was a perfect room temperature. The lights were not blinding and the food was perfect. Next time my company requires us to drive to Austin for a mid morning torture... Everywhere a Thundercloud experience is a special one. The one on Manchaca is wonderful - as is the one on Burnet. The people who make your subs take the time to ask you what you want on your order -and they make a delicious sub for you. At the Riverside location, an abusive employee - female manager with blond hair makes Thundercloud a creepout experience. She slams your change down on the counter (like the soup Nazi). She probably spits in your food to boot. Never go to this Thundercould location when the night manager wants to get otta there and starts abusing customers. I saw her be rude to the people who came in after me to (because she is there alone with just the clean up person, she thinks that no one is watching.) This is my favorite Thundercloud. I love the counter guys here. I love standing on my tip-toes and chatting with them over the counter. They're funny and nice and make me laugh, and that's what lunch is all about. There are no subs to be had at Thundercloud. If it can be served on wheat, or there's an avocado on the premises, it's not a sub. If you come looking for a sub, you'll be disappointed. So forget the name. I'm spoiled when it comes to subs. I spent 10 years in Delaware (yes .. it's a state .. near Philly), home to the famous Capriotti's! They roast their own turkeys and makes a sub called the Bobbie (Turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce). But I digress. Thundercloud has the grunge sub-shop down. No gloves? Of course not! But they have the Texas Tuna. That alone is worth the trip. Fresh tuna salad is a weakness for me. Add to it a bit of avocado, jalapeno and Thunder sauce on shredded lettuce? Nice. Add to it that the guy who made it for you is a ringer for Elvis Costello (by way of Jack Rabbit Slim's) and, well, that is an Experience. But since I started with Capriotti's, let me ask a question: why is the bread so insipid? Good sub bread has texture and crunch. I think that Thundercloud could add a star from this reviewer if they upgraded from the mushy (dare I say Subway quality?) loaves they serve up. read more

Yay Thundercloud! So my husband and I headed into Austin last Saturday to go to a certain trailerfood event, but ended up leaving the event and feeling quite disappointed and hungry after waiting in line a very long time and ending up with no food to show for it. We remembered seeing this Thundercloud as we walked from our car to the aforementioned event, and also remembered that we'd been wanting to go to a Thundercloud again (we used to frequent the various locations of this place when we lived in Austin in the early 2000s, but hadn't been in approximately 5 years), so it seemed like a good choice. When we arrived there were only a couple of other customers. We quickly placed our orders: I got a small California Club (the only thing I ever get at Thundercloud), and my husband got a large Tuna Salad sandwich. I asked for my sandwich without lettuce or onions, with sprouts added (and of course I wanted the tomatoes/mayo/mustard/thundersauce/other good stuff). Both of us got our sandwiches on wheat, and I got provolone on mine ... can't even remember if he got cheese. I also ordered a small soda -- I think I was drinking Mug root beer. The dude and dudette working behind the counter made friendly conversation with us as they prepared our food, and eventually we revealed that a no-longer-operational Thundercloud location was my husband's first job in Austin when he arrived in the mid-90s. Okay, on to the food ... you see, in the years that have passed since we last ate at Thundercloud, both of us had convinced ourselves that it couldn't be THAT good. Like, how could a deli sandwich place be so much better than other similar places? Well, I still don't know, but it just is. I know that I can at least pinpoint two things that elevate their California Club in comparison to similar sandwiches: the avocado and the bacon. Unlike many other places, this place does not skimp on the avocado (you might even think it's too much, but I don't!). It is mashed, not sliced, so it stays on the sandwich and is evenly distributed. It is also always obviously fresh, judging by both the shade of green and by the taste. As for the bacon, it was honestly better than I remembered. Too often, deli-type places use limp/thin/soft/pale bacon that simply does not have enough taste. I had really thought that Thundercloud used that sort of cheap microwave bacon, and my husband said that's what they used when he worked there. Well, either there have been advances in microwave bacon technology, or Thundercloud has upgraded, because this bacon was perfectly flavorful and crispy. My husband had wolfed down his sandwich very quickly, and said it was also better than he remembered or could have imagined. We were perfectly satisfied while not being too full, and this experience definitely helped to turn our day around after its disappointing start. Yes, I know it's crazy to give this place a 5-star review, but I don't care. If nothing else, it will remind me not to wait anything even close to 5 years to go back again, no matter how silly it seems to think this highly of a deli chain. read more

I was having one of those days where I was just staring into my refrigerator, trying to figure out what to eat for lunch... and just completely drawing a blank. And then, a thought. Thundercloud! So, I made my way to the nearby location, and ordered a turkey sandwich on wheat with onions, tomatoes, mustard, light mayo, and little pickle slices that tasted almost homemade. Oh, and pepper and Thundersauce. Yum! It was really good. The counter staff was nice, in that scruffy, 'locked way that a lot of local joints seem to favor, and I got in and out of there with lunch in hand pretty fast, even though it was prime lunch time. The first time I went to Thundercloud, I thought- yuck, I hate cold cut subs. But then I took in the menu and realized there was a lot more to Thundercloud then just cold cut subs. I love the veggie delight- with the hummus and all the veggies, the office favorite- for those days I feel like mayo-licious egg salad sandwich, the texas tuna- tuna and bacon? yes please!, and the nada chicken- which tastes like it should be unhealthy but it's delicious semi healthy fake chicken! Thundercloud came to the rescue! Obviously, being an OKC Thunder fan, the signage struck my fancy and struck me in. Talk about variety -they know how to build any kind of sub! Thundercloud Subs, the famous local Austin chain, could be 5 stars in my book if it weren't for one major problem: They are always running out of stuff. The biggest thing they run out of? Bread. How can you be a subway shop and run out of bread? The other night I called this store at like, 6:30PM to ask what time they closed and the guy on the phone said normally 9PM but they were almost out of bread so I better hurry. Say what? This is not just a passing thing either, it happens frequently. The other location down the street on the East side of Riverside also runs out all the time, for example they were out of the wheat bread, large sized bread and tomatoes the other evening. You would think that management would get their act together and fix the problem to adjust but nothing seems to change. As for the food it is quite good. Most of the sandwiches come with both mustard and mayo but of course you can customize your sub as you see fit. My favorite is the ever popular Office Special which is egg salad with bacon. Thundercloud Subs has the best egg salad out of any place I have eaten. Worth eating at, as long as they aren't out of what it is you are wanting on your sandwich. Like bread. read more

The lady who prepared my salad didn't wear any gloves, on top of that, she kept wiping her finger on a piece of rag that was just laying on the counter, it was gross. Perhaps I was spoiled by Dibella's up in NY with their delicous variety of freshly baked breads, mountains of cheese, high quality mustards and peppers. Visiting Austin for the Fun Fun Fun Fest and this was the first place for food my friend and I stopped and it blows Fort Worth's The Great Outdoors out of the water! I had the Austin Club and normally I'm not a bacon on a sandwich fan, but this bacon was so crisp and flavorful it actually made me understand why there are such die hard bacon devotees out there. Chip selection is good. Plus there's a great little patio in the back! AND a private lot, which is a big deal to someone used to suburban parking. Employees were nice and helpful. Quick disclaimer: I love Thundercloud Subs' sandwiches. They're fresh, they're delicious, thunder sauce rocks my world, sooo tasty. That being said, this location is 100% heinous and most of their employees are freaks without leashes who prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that drugs kill brain cells. I've had some odd sandwich makers before, and I respect individuality, but when your skinny jeans are slung so incredibly low that not even your giant studded belt can keep them above your butt crack, it's time for new pants. Doesn't it violate some kind of health code to have your bare butt crack so close to a food prep area? The same thing goes for the incredibly intrusive sandwich maker last time I went in (who wore a disgusting Band Aid on the corner of his lip that loomed precariously close to my food) not only what I was doing today/tonight/for a living/this weekend, but also what was on my Netflix list, did I have an opinion on the stop loss policy of the US, etc. I came to order a sandwich, not discuss Iraq or talk about my job. Thanks, but no thanks. On top of it all, they make sandwiches wrong. You can look them in the face and say "No, I do not want mayonnaise." And upon watching you mouth no, shake your head in the negatory, and make a gagging sound in response to mayonnaise being mentioned, your completely high sandwich maker will proceed to slather this foul condiment on the bread and then insist you said yes to mayonnaise, despite the fact that you loathe it and have never ordered it on a sandwich ever. Surely today you changed your mind. And she may start over (with an attitude) and vow to make your sandwich correctly this time, but she will forget the cheese even after you mention it twice. Oh, yes. She will forget the cheese. But hey, that's me. Why is it that a sandwich from somewhere but your own home tastes much better than anything you make yourself? Who knows. Their egg salad & tuna salad is the best! Both are creamy, flavorful, mixed up perfectly and served up with any condiment or veggie on your sandwich. I know someone who orders their egg salad with bacon! When at home, I make sure to eat only wheat bread but white is the way to go at Thundercloud. I haven't tried any of the cold cut sandwiches because I really do feel that I can make that kind of sammie at home. The friendly & funny guy making our sandwich kept mentioning how delicious their homemade potato salad was but when we decided to order it, they had run out so I'll have to be back to see if he was right about that one! Only thing I'd stay clear of is the tomato basil soup... it had no flavor and after a few bites, I decided to push it to the side. Let's start with the facts, 99% of the time I do not prefer warm sandwiches. I think it's because I'm usually having them for lunch and a cold sandwich just feels better. I don't have a lot of sandwich experience outside of Subway to be honest. The first time I had Thundercloud was up near Lake Travis and it was awful. Dirty little store with dirty little workers who look at you like you have 3 heads when you order. The sandwich was nothing to remember. So for probably the next 2 years I didn't go to Thundercloud again. Any of them. Then I finally was forced into going to the Riverside location. All I can say now is that consistency wins. I like the people that work there, they are super friendly. If you go in at the right time you barely have to wait in line, and you can order in advance. (Why people don't do that more often, I'll never know). Every time I go I contemplate trying something other than my basic sandwich but I have a hard time straying. My only request is that they come up with an alternative to the current bread they have. I love it, and it's great that it's vegetarian....but some sort of pita or whatever so I could just have less bread mass would be superb. Now, if you are strictly a patron of Thundercloud please follow a few of my rules. Don't get in line unless you know what you want to eat. When you are finished ordering and you have paid with a credit card OR cash and haven't gotten your receipt, move the F out of the way so everyone else can move along. You are holding up the line. If you are in line please keep in mind PERSONAL SPACE. Nobody needs your body so close to theirs that they can feel you breathe. It's really unpleasant and leaves me with a sadness about my sandwich. read more

How do I love Thundercloud? Let me count the ways... 1) the people working here are great - personable and funny. I have never come across anyone who has been rude and I have been to this Thundercloud many many MANY times. One of them gave me and my friend a riddle to figure out while he made our sandwiches (there are 10 body parts with 3 letter names - try to get them all, I dare you), and when we only came up with 8, he wrote the answers on a piece of paper so we could check them once we left. Awesome. 2) The sandwiches are great...I haven't had anything I don't like. I recommend the Austin Club or the Nada Chicken 3) The chili on Friday's - to die for. 4) There is always fun and interesting music playing 5) When it's super busy during lunch time - they somehow manage to make the lines move pretty quickly 6) Though I almost always get my food to-go, their eating area is nice and cozy. 7) Thundersauce. I don't know what is up with Thundercloud's mayo, but it is go-ooood! This is the only place I have mayo on my sandwich. I usually just stick with the turkey or tuna. And when I add pickles, its a fresh spear that they slice up for me, not those flimsy hamburger dills! Also, the staff must love working here, because some of them have been there for years. I find this location to be be super efficient and i love that they ban cell phones from the counter area. This location is near the office I worked in when I lived in Austin and I ate there several times. Thundercloud is a local Austin sandwich chain that is very popular in the area. I'm a big fan of supporting local businesses but I found that these subs were not quite as good as Subway a lot of the time but they were still really cheap. (It's lunch time, go figure) - they are absolutely worth it. I have tried most of their sandwiches, and my all time favorite has always been the Veggie Delite. The combination between the hummus, avocado and stock veggies make it a well worth sandwich to eat everyday. And their thundercloud sauce. They could change the name to HorsePiss and I'd still vibrantly ask for it. Every month they offer a discount on a sandwich that's generally $2.99 for a small and $3.99 for large. Poor? It's for you.
