I had come to Thursday Kitchen pre covid for a quick appetizer and drinks, really liked it then. Returned recently with a friend around 6:30pm on a Saturday, we were told that it's about a 50 min wait. On point, we got a text in about 45 mins saying our table was ready. The Soju cocktails are amazing - we tried the lychee/mango, blue and grapefruit. I think the grapefruit one is the best. Dinner in order of preference shared between the two of us - Korean Fried chicken, Soft Shell Crab, Chilaquiles, Mac & Cheese, Ugly Potato and Edamame dumpling. The portions are small, so though we ordered 6 dishes between us and had a couple rounds of drinks, we walked out comfortably full. Oh also, the bread pudding is amazing!! Do it! Whenever I'm in the city this is my go-to place. There were some new items on the menu that seemed quite enticing. Edamame Dumpling - Like the corn dumpling at Mokyo, the edamame flavor truly sings. I'm not sure how they could make this any better. Ugly Potato - They came out a bit dry but if it's potato I will eat it. It definitely needed more sauce/more feta. Soft Shell Crab - My only gripe about it was that the breading was a bit too heavy and weighed it all down bite-wise. Even more acid would be welcome. Thursday Kitchen actually exceeded my expectations. It does classics well--its Korean popcorn chicken and truffle macaroni and cheese made the whole table drool. The popcorn chicken had the perfect crunch and bite to it with a sauce that wasn't too sweet. Their steak was also great--perfectly cut and flavored. I think the ideal party size to come with would be 2-4 people, since the dishes are pretty small. They range between $11-17 each? The portions aren't huge either so it was nice to be able to try so many different dishes. They don't take reservations either but we came pretty early when they opened and didn't wait long. Nothing too fancy, but has good taste, a nice crisp, and is quite juicy! Gnocchi - (3/5) Essentially it's a Tteokbokki dish, with a bit different texture (the rice cakes are shorter than normal). It also has cauliflower in it, which I didn't mind, but is not what you'd expect from a Korean dish. Edamame Dumplings - (4/5) To me, these were like ravioli, but in the shape of a dumpling. This East Village spot is the first spot I have tried Korean tapas dining. I arrived there right at opening time (6 PM) proved to be a smart move, as the restaurant is walk-in only and surely fills up quickly (by 7pm the place was packed and there were a few people waiting outside --on a weekday night) The tapas portions are reasonably priced for the portion (in Manhattan). For two people with moderate appetites, four plates make for a satisfying meal to share. Their standout dish was their popcorn chicken which was so irresistible we ordered a second plate. The steak too (served only medium-rare) comes with a rich, flavorful sauce that perfectly complements the meat's tenderness. But the real surprise to me was their truffle mac and cheese - coming from someone who typically isn't enthusiastic about mac and cheese this dish was packed with rich cheesiness combined with truffle. It's a cool vibe that perfectly fits the neighborhood, with Drake playing on the speakers and cocktails in Capri Sun-like pouches that glow in the dark. Luckily, the food stands out just as much. I love Korean food and I love tapas and I love fusion food!! I definitely wish I knew about this restaurant earlier. I split the duck empanadas, edamame dumplings, soft shell crab, and kimchi paella with a friend and felt quite satiated after. The edamame dumplings were my favorite--the truffle oil is a game changer. read more
