So annoyed i called to confirm the hours for today and someone answered saying they're opened at 1130am. When i got there they weren't open until noon. Wtf So I came back again a little after noon to order some pretzels and the gentleman in the host stand said he will ask the kitchen and they said it will be done in 15 mins. It's so rare to find a restaurant that specializes in serving vegan and gluten free dishes. All the dishes were OK. We got the hyped onion rings, but I found them to be a bit too oily for my taste. Being real, the biggest benefit to Thyme and Tonic is it's gluten free food/kitchen. It's a rare thing to find a place that is truly safe for folks with severe gluten intolerance. The staff was friendly and atmosphere warm and welcoming. At the same time, the food itself was pretty lackluster in flavor and tasted pretty bland. Gluten free doesn't mean one has to sacrifice flavor, just gluten! Ordered a few things with a party of 5 so we were able to try a few things and they each missed the mark in their own way. Also it was more like a Just egg scramble, shaped into an omelette. The mixed greens side could be bigger/ more generous and have some dressing. It was just plain mixed greens, not a side salad. We were chatting away so we did not even realize how much time it passed, then we had to try to grab their attention several times just to get our order in. After that, our order took almost an hour (for the whole table). Some of our food came out sooner. From being seated to being served food it took ~90min. At the end of the meal, we asked and they said they were short staffed that day. So all this being said, I want to give them the benefit of the doubt this was just an off day. However, I think this could have been communicated to us- "hey sorry things are taking a little longer than usual etc". We were pretty much just ignored until we asked to be served, followed up on our items etc. I'm just sharing my experience- it may not be like this all the time, if/when fully staffed. Overall I love the concept of this restaurant. If you eat gluten free, vegan, or even pescatarian, you're in luck. The restaurant has a LOT of potential and I hope it continues to improve over time. It's on the pricier side. The appetizers were both good, my favorite was the dumpling dish by far -- it's not often you get to eat dumplings on a gluten free diet. The chili oil and garnishes were deliciously soaked into the highly realistic dumpling wrappers. The rice paper Vietnamese roles were just OK, the presentation felt rushed and they weren't wrapped very well. For a main dish I had the pesto bowl with fusilli. Honestly the dish was super disappointing. I love pesto and I love pasta but it was a green sauce, a sprinkling of vegan Parmesan cheese and that was it. No other garnishing, no additional elements or texture at all. While it tasted fine, this could have been something even more delicious with a bit more thoughtfulness. Its also gluten free with fish and numerous vegetarian meals for all to enjoy. I started with incredibly yummy squash soup. The flavors were delightful. It had Tahiti sauce added which I felt was very creative and a perfect party in my mouth. My entrée was salmon burger with all the fixings. It was complemented with some fresh salad the avocado which was exceptionally creamy with a tasty aioli sauce. The bread was amazing fresh and warm it went fantastic with the salmon. I had a gluten free beer called blonde is was very refreshing it went perfectly with my food. My hubby started off with off with matzo ball soup. He said it was good however a bit salty. He went to have fish tacos he stated it was delish. The fish was tender with excellent seasoning along with a substantial taco shell. He had a cocktail call love potion, he expressed it was a fabulous drink. The restaurant did not offer any desserts so that would be my recommendation to them. So this restaurant marks one of the rare times that the food looked so good that my phone did not eat first lol ! We stopped here because of how close it is to the museum. There definitely are a lot of tourists, so be prepared for a lot of bulky bags. Luckily we were able to be seated right away and the waitress was super friendly and attentive, which is (obviously) not super common in touristy areas. My boyfriend did not realize it was mainly plant based, but luckily the the waitress made sure that we knew before we ordered. I was really excited to try Thyme and Tonic because it's gluten free and has a lot of vegetarian options. It did a good job on some things but failed to deliver on others. The price is up there so the experience overall fell a little short on my expectations. I had the dumplings as an appetizer and the Diablo burger as an entree with sweet potato wedges. The dumplings were pretty good and I recommend them. As for the entree, despite the name of the burger (Diablo) it didn't have any kick to it and you couldn't really taste any jalapeños. The bun and burger in general were quite dry and the flavor was lacking, it really was pretty bland overall. The sweet potato wedges are very mushy and have absolutely no crisp to them at all, so they don't really pair well with a burger (or with anything I can think of). Now I know NYC is pricey, I expect it but save your money and go to the super popular deli next door, Modern Bread and Bagel, and get a much better bagel but for $13 instead. This was more so a deconstructed version because it was just toasted bread with a few cherry tomatoes on the plate, drizzled with balsamic and a few pieces of sliced, hard cheese. Everything about the dish was dry and unexpected, so it's best that if you order you're aware of how this is remixed from what you might be most familiar with. Cheddar Scramble with Vegan Sausage - This was much better than my original entree. In terms of portion, this will definitely fill you up served with a hearty amount of home fries egg and vegan sausage. Flavor wise, all pretty standard but satisfying! Overall, the service was outstanding and we were very appreciative of the staff. Made a reservation for 1:30 pm. Showed up at 1:34 and was advised kitchen closed early today. They informed us since we didn't get there early and order by 1:30, the kitchen closed and we were out of luck. How can you possibly order by 1:30 if your reservation is literally at 1:30?! They responded with "well if you got here at 1:30, we would give you 3 minutes to order". Again, how is that possible?? Do not waste your time at this restaurant. Staff did not care at all.
