My mom and I discovered Tico's Tacos a few days after we moved and just learning about Tico's Tacos made us want to see what the hype was about. So my family ordered some tacos from Tico's Tacos and they tasted great. I also like their nachos and the nacho cheese sauce is amazing and really good. My dad also loves their combination burrito too and you can't beat the amazing prices on their delicious Mexican food and it's no wonder that Ticos Tacos still ranks as the top Mexican restaurant for great food. Mom and I also learned that this is the only surviving Tico's Tacos restaurant in Salinas and that Ticos Tacos started in San Jose but I'm amazed that the family that owns it is amazingly smart to offer simply amazing food and is still successful. Ive come to this restaurant since I was a child and am obsessed with their cheese enchiladas. I hadn't been here in years, mainly because prices have continued to rise (for good reason). Anyway, I came in and noticed a man who appeared unhoused and experiencing severe mental health concerns. He sat down and immediately an older woman at the cashier began communicating with the cooks in Spanish requesting them to make a Chile Colorado burrito asap. They quickly made this and provided to him with a side of salsa and soda. He was thankful and went on his way. It's kind and empathic acts like this that makes me want to support businesses like this one. So often people who are struggling with severe MH concerns or are unhoused are ostracized and invisible. I will gladly support this business moving forward and sharing this experience to encourage others to also support, with special consideration to their increase in prices. I have been here twice now for food to go since the shelter in place order. The only things I've tried is the chili relleno burrito, rice and beans. Today I took my sons who ordered a enchilada and burrito plate and some giant wet burrito. Again the food was outstanding, it was made fresh, served hot. I appreciate the salsa bar with hand sanitizer and directions for those wanting to serve themselves. The service was helpful and gracious as well. The lady that gave us our food thanked us for coming and supporting them during this time. We drive from San Jose to eat here and will continue to do do. Tico Taco is a great place for lunch on the south side of Salinas. I prefer Cozumel for going out to dinner, but Tico Taco does in a pinch when I'm on this side of town and need a fast lunch with professionals working on this side of town. Star removed because they do not give complimentary chips/salsa. There is a salsa bar, but no basket of chips. The only thing I order here is the chicken enchiladas which are great, but haven't tried other things on the menu. My husband enjoys the guacamole with taquitos. Make sure you get the chunky kind - it will cost you extra. FYI: You order at the counter and they give you a number to go pick up your food. There are no servers that wait tables. This is the only place I know that will charge you more for getting less on a burrito. I've driven by this place a thousand times and finally decided to give it a try. I was really hungry so I decided on the carne asada super burrito. A little pricey at $9.50 but I expected a huge burrito at that price. I was surprised when the total came to $12!! I asked why and was told carne asada was a dollar extra. One of my favorite places to eat I have never had any I didn't like here. I am surprised it doesn't have higher reviews. at first I hesitated to go here because the prices seemed high but everytime we drove by the place was packed so we tried it. I'm really frustrated with this place right now because it has so much potential to be a really great Mexican restaurant but falls flat on one minor issue. In short, their food is good but not great. I say good because there is consistency in the recipes and the food will always taste the same from one day to the next and you don't have to worry about the food tasting different from one week after the next. It's not great because some of their food is canned but at least their vendors/distributors are also consistent with their recipes. So if you are looking for consistency, you got it. My greatest pet-peeve is that their dine-in plates are not dine-in plates, they are to-go containers with the tops cut off. It's really insulting to their regular customers to people like me. At first I thought that they just ran out of plates but it's been over six months now and they are still serving in to-go containers. The only word I would use here is GHETTO. This restaurant is in an affluent side of town and they treat them (and everyone else) like third class customers. Common let's step it up here, you probably waste more time and money on paying your employees to cut off the tops of the to-go containers than just buying regular dine-in plates.
