Yes, I admit it's writhin walking distance of my condo, but 1) food is always fresh 2) many healthy options 3) hot meal platters daily 4) SUPER friendly staff who accommodate requests whenever possible. A huge fan of this Irish daily. Located in north riverdale 9; the bronx. Always packed and line to get food. The have a hot food buffet and changing their specials daily. Hot food is always fresh and huge portions. Their salad bar is nice and always fresh produce. My only concern with the salad bar is the portions being a bit bigger. By the time you add all the toppings it overpowers the salad. The chicken cutlet is always fresh and seasoned well. The sandwiches are a hit or miss. Sometimes they get a little skimp on the cold cuts but I'm always watching and telling them to put a little more lol. I always come here for lunch and staff is welcoming and friendly. My go to lunch spot when I need something quick and good. A strong sleeper are their pecan cookies. I always get one while I wait for my for food. read more

The ingredients Tierney uses is always fresh and delicious. I've had almost everything on their menu and was never unsatisfied. The quality of ingredients and food is on par with cafes you'd find in Manhattan, which is a rarity in the Bronx. You can get a good meal for a decent price, about $6-12. For me, that's not bad compared to prices you would have to pay in Manhattan. I highly recommend a Chicken Casear Salad, Grilled Chicken with Pesto, or Grilled Chicken Casear Wrap. They do casear stuff really well :) They also have to-die for desserts. The chocolate chip cookies are AMAZING when they're fresh. One complaint I have is that whenever I get them in the store, the cookies are always semi-hard. This is a major disappointment because most of the time, the cookies are soft when Tierneys caters so I expect the same quality when I go to the store. Other baked goods include small pecan or blueberry pies, tarts, peanut butter cookies, and croissants. I highly recommend Tierneys for your next lunch option. I'm glad I came here to write this review because I saw others had similar experiences. The food is decent quality - it's your standard deli. The best part, I would say, is the baked goods. The 1 star is for the pretty obvious racism of the owner and the staff. I have walked into this deli numerous times and even if I came in first, they will attend to the white customers first. The white customers are usually courteous enough to inform the staff that I was there first, at which point their smiles drop and their customer service goes out the window. They avoid eye contact, they are short with you, and they are very impatient because they want to get to their preferred customers. Even if I'm the only one in there, they clearly hate my presence. I still smile and try to act courteous because it's the closest spot to get an iced coffee but wow. I also know from experience that it isn't me or something I personally did... every minority who has been to this deli has had similar experiences, my father included. The worst/most hurtful part is that the staff is comprised exclusively of Mexicans, who I am sure the owner takes financial advantage of and through social instruction, they follow suit and act hostile towards non-Whites/non-Irish folk. Please feel free to review my other reviews in case you think I am a crazy "social justice warrior" or complain about these things often. I have never experienced anything like this before nor have I written about anything like this. But if you are latino, Indian, black, or any darker-than-white shade, you're going to have a bad time. read more

The unfriendly female "cashier" mentioned in one of the reviews is the owner. Everyone else who works behind the counter are men. She is always like that unless you are one of her Irish friends. The food is over priced, especially for the area, and the quality can be uneven. I've had a salad with lettuce that was not very fresh. Some of the hot food is good and some isn't very good. They have the same tired vegetables ALL the time. Mashed turnips? Turnips??? Maybe that's an Irish thing? Who eats tasteless mashed turnips? Who wants limp, over cooked, tasteless, mushy broccoli, and mushy green peas that came out of a can? ALL the time. Whoever is doing the cooking seems to have no imagination. A large dinner consisting of meat or fish with two of those boring vegetables is $9.00. The container they use for a small "dinner" has no room in it for a main dish and two veggies. That is $6.00 and they seem unprepared for anyone to order it because the person behind the counter didn't seem to know what to do......since there is NO ROOM FOR THE MAIN DISH AND TWO VEGGIES IN THAT CONTAINER. I don't remember ordering sandwiches so perhaps they are good. I have no idea. I ordered Irish tea today and as usual it was filled up so far that liquid was already slopping out from under the lid when it was set down on the counter. And the man waiting on me saw this and didn't care. It's not worth trying to get them to do it right so I grab enough napkins to wipe my hands after I pour some of it out after I leave. I live in Westchester now but stop in there on the rare occasions I am in the area to get tea for the drive home. Maybe I hope the food will be better or different but it never is. Years ago this deli was owned by different people. It was a simple neighborhood deli with the best Irish scones EVER......baked every morning by the ladies who worked there. Then it changed owners, became an over priced "gourmet" Irish deli. They still have scones but they are almost always over baked and not soft and wonderful inside like the old ones were. read more

If I could, I would give this place a minus star. But of course I can't. First of all, I will agree with the other reviewers, this place does have a good selection but the prices aren't really doing it for me. In a neighborhood where there's a grocery store in almost every corner, a sushi place, restaurants, they could do better. I mean, they charge almost $4 dollars for their brownies and this place ain't even Magnolia Bakery. But my problem EVERY TIME I GO is with the staff, there's always this female cashier that is so nasty and rude it makes me think twice whenever I want to buy something. I was on line waiting to pay for my lunch and this guy just got in front of me and she ringed his stuff up! I didn't say anything because I wasn't really in a rush but still! The place might have a lot of healthy snacks but I can't deal with her, I rather just go to Garden Gourmet and get my snacks there and not have a hard time. Baked goods and Irish groceries are great but the staff leaves a lot to be desired. The counterman never "hears" my order the first time or even the second time. Every time I'm here is the same. I don't have any problem with this anywhere else and it's not like I'm a low talker. I make sure to order clearly because of previous experience. I repeated my order three times(3 egg whites, irish sausage and 1 slice of cheese on a seeded roll) and he turned to the grill man and said "Sausage egg and cheese". Which turned out to be 1 overcooked whole egg, Irish sausage and globs of cheese on a roll that didn't have seeds. I was the only one ordering. Great sandwiches! I've ordered delivery from here twice. The first time they forgot the pesto on my chicken panini which was disappointing, but the sandwich was still great! They are also very reasonably priced. I typically expect to pay at least $8 for a sandwich, but my panini was only $6.50. I was just charged $5.77 for a coffee and an egg and cheese on a roll. An egg on a roll is priced 1.75 and they told me that adding cheese made it $3.00. When I opened my sandwich, the roll was not toasted and the egg filled up the middle of it and that's about it. My family has been getting food from this great Riverdale/Mosholu Ave deli for years. The food is always fresh and delicious. It's in close proximity to Van Cortland and a quick drive for the local H.S. seniors. The Irish music, friendly staff, and quick service make this a go-to place. Priced very reasonably for the quality and the neighborhood. Always super clean and welcoming. Favorites include creating a custom salad, the chicken cutlet with pesto, mozzarella, avocado and bacon Panini, the dinner specials (esp. the corned beef and cabbage), the raisin walnut bread, and the best chocolate chip cookies and mini desserts. This establishment just cannot seem to get it together.The primary concern today 11/5/17 is the inconsistencies with the pricing.I was told today that I cannot get an itemized receipt for the food that was ordered because it was paid in cash. The owner hung up the phone and made no attempt to call back.The food is substandard, burned bagles, over priced bottle water, sandwiches given that was not ordered,the workers can not seem to get the order correct, multiple trips back to attempt to resolve with repeated errors.After a while you give up.A monopoly in the community and they do not seem concerned. I like this place - great quality sandwiches and Irish foodstuffs, but yes, the price is on the high end...especially for the imported items (chocolates etc) available for Christmas etc. I can get the same things for 1/3 less in Woodlawn, which is what I now do. Apart from that, the food is excellent and the shop is clean with a pleasant atmosphere. They also sell some unique locally crafted food items. I do agree with the other reviewer about the owner preferentially checking out regular customers even if you're waiting in line. This has happened me a couple of times also, and I agree, it's unprofessional. I do understand wanting to keep your 'base' happy, but it's a bad policy if you're trying to increase your customer base. read more

The food is super fresh, the place is spotless and the food is packed beautifully with high quality napkins in a high quality bag.
