Tierra Del Sol had been on my list for awhile. I'm glad that I went and tried them out. It was located in a building that it shared with another restaurant and next door to it was Gigantic Brewing. There was a shared outside seating area and indoor seating as well. I got horchata, chips, guacamole and a mole enchilada plate. The chips were good. The guacamole had plenty of lime and the avocados were smashed well. I liked it. The horchata was good. The mole itself was very good but the shredded chicken inside the enchilada was blah. The beans and rice were solid. I got some habanero hot sauce from the restaurant and it made both sides even better. The service was fine. Really great Oaxacan food. Let's start with those blue corn tortillas. The first time I got one was their breakfast burrito and tbh, I didn't love it. It tasted kinda mealy and dried out. But I think that was a fluke. The next two times I got a chicken and cheese quesadilla, and then cheese enchiladas with mole. Each of the following two times the tortillas was awesome. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it had some freshness, complexity, and authenticity to it. Maybe even a little nuttiness and sweetness. The quesadilla was awesome. The chicken was relatively juicy and tender and the sauce had a nice flavor. The green sauce and crema were also good, but not great. I think it ended up being more than the sum of it's parts though. The enchilladas were also awesome. I really liked the mole. It definitely had a nice deep, complex flavor. Some nuttiness came through for me, savoriness, chocolatiness. The right amount of salt. The right amount of fat to coat your mouth. The cheese in the enchilladas was good to. I don't think they're using the cheap stuff. And they did a great job with the rice. The grains had a nice bite to them; perhaps a little too far on the soft side. But they didn't clump together, were nicely seasoned, and had a sort of addicting quality to them. Prices are pretty reasonable too. Around $15 for a meal. I eat a lot and I come away being pretty satisfied. I'll definitely be back. read more

Great Oaxacan food in Portland. The last time I had Oaxacan was when I was in LA. It seems to be a small family-run stall within a small building and the food is authentic and tasty. We got the mole plate and substituted the protein with nopalito (cactus) and added both queso fresco and melted cheese. The mole is light and fresh and I loved that there was enough nopalito for each bite. I enjoyed the Blue Corn breakfast burrito, the bacon was diced rather than in strips which prevents taking one bite and the entire piece coming out. We asked the cashier for recommendations on our first visit to Tierra Del Sol. He recommended the mole enchiladas and the tlayuda. Both were excellent. The mole enchilada came with two chicken enchiladas with a zesty mole sauce for $14.75. The tlayuda comes with your choice of two meats. We ordered carne asada and carnitas, but wondered how that would taste when mixed together. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that they made half the tlayuda with each meat. The tortilla was crispy. Overall, it was pretty good and cost $24.50. It feeds two or three people. We also tried one picadita with carne asada, which was $8. We liked that it was a thicker tortilla than a taco and had sour cream. Although the prices were a little higher than many other local establishments that serve Mexican food, we enjoyed our visit. After eating here, we visited the pie shop next door, which was also very good. read more

Pleasant surprised to find Oaxacan food this far north. They're lauded for the Tlayuda and Mole Amarillo, both of which we tried. Tlayuda is like a pizza lined with tortilla, and the asada and mole toppings were good. Add salsa for some spice. My tortillas and chicken were a little dry, but I imagine that's a hazard of delivery vs fine-in. A great drunk meal or hangover cure otherwise. The mole has a real wow factor. Its more like a soup or stew and is an exceptional combination of savory and sweet-pepper notes. My favorite thing might be the 7-dollar Tetela. A simple blue corn tortilla with savory black beans and a sprinkle of cheese comes alive with a fiery red or scorching green. Overall a pretty strong showing for Mexican food this far north, and that mole amarillo is worth trying. read more

Stoked on this new find!!! Being Mexican and from Southern California (where there's good Mexican cuisine everywhere!) I was bummed to realize it's hard to find in Portland. But this place changed the game for me!! I ordered three tacos (chorizo, mole, and pastor). The pastor and chorizo are both made in house and the same goes for their tortillas which are organic and fresh!!! The chef and cook were friendly and am glad I was able to connect with them in Spanish. But back to the food, the blue corn tortillas were fresh and each of the tacos left me wanting more!!! I appreciate that they are trying to be different with their organic blue corn tortillas, but they are not my favorite. I found them to be bland and a bit earthy in flavor. I had carne asada, pollo, and Al pastor. The meats were seemingly good quality. The Al pastor and pollo were quite good. The carne asada was tasty as well, but there were several chunks of gristle, which was very unfortunate. I also ordered chips and guacamole. The chips were good, but their guac was not my favorite either. It was a bit liquidy, but chunky with a strong lime flavor. It's a great place to get mole in Portland. However, the prices have gotten out of control. It used to be $14 for a plate last year and now it's $20+ dollars. That's more than 30% increase in one year. I can't support that. I'll look elsewhere for more affordable mole. read more

Food is ok but I notice a few times they must forget orders or something happens that caused my order to be ready after other peoples orders that have been here after me. This last time I think they forgot my order and when the lady saw me she made it really quick. My orders are never big or complicated and I see people that have ordered way after me get their food before me or around the same time. My last wait time was about 25 min for two tacos and a sope type thing.I've ordered this before and had it done pretty quickly. I would really like to see this new little building with a handful of restaurants succeed, but so far, this has been my second not so great experience at this location. I ordered the huevos rancheros and they were nothing like any huevos I've ever had. They were basically scrambled eggs with some chopped up tomatoes and onions in them. On the side were some black beans and some fried potatoes. Unfortunately, every single item on the plate was totally BLAND. Like, no flavor. The food was edible, it just wasn't great, nor even really good. The accompanying tortillas were dry and didn't taste great, though they also had little flavor. The whole dish was screaming for some bold flavored salsa to punch it up, but the super tiny cup of salsa they gave me had very little flavor as well. They have the only gluten free burritos in town as far as I know (and believe me, I've looked). This place is the bomb! The pastor taco was a pure explosion of complex, deep flavors. I was overjoyed the tortilla was blue corn cuz I have loved them since eating them in Mexico City & have found it hard to find in the PNW.
