Mole Plate (subbed chicken with nopalito)
    Deedee C.

Great Oaxacan food in Portland. The last time I had Oaxacan was when I was in LA. It seems to be a small family-run stall within a small building and the food is authentic and tasty. We got the mole plate and substituted the protein with nopalito (cactus) and added both queso fresco and melted cheese. The mole is light and fresh and I loved that there was enough nopalito for each bite. We also tried this tetela (blue corn tortilla wrapped veggie) creation and that was also amazing with their salsas. Will definitely be returning!

I have eaten here several times. This time I must have been too late after the lunch rush ( 2:00 pm PST) The steak was very dry and the blue corn shells were also dried out. The black beans were just that, black beans. Gave them 4 stars cuz I know they usually do alot better.

I stopped by Tierra del sol after a long night. I have to say this quesadilla was to die for! I scarfed it down in less than 5 minutes and probably scared the people sitting across from me. They have a few different options most of not all are gluten free. They have an inside and outside area to sit and eat. You can also grab a drink from the coffee shop across the street or get a cold beer from next door.

A very good breakfast burrito wrapped in Blue corn.

I think their sister location is the most popular cart at the Mercado on SE Foster. I enjoyed the Blue Corn breakfast burrito, the bacon was diced rather than in strips which prevents taking one bite and the entire piece coming out. They offer cuisine from the Oaxacan region, the cart is elevated compared to standard Mexican food venues. The quality of eateries and the comfy outside seating make this an attractive venue.

I ordered the Tetela de Frijol, a triangle concoction of deliciousness! I don't think I ever ate anything like it before and it was so rich with fresh seasonings and flavor. Love, loved it, which is why the plate is empty.

Great fresh tortillas, delicious meats, wonderful tacos. Highly recommended! Nice patio, quick service!

They make their own tortillas. All the food tastes homemade and authentic. They are very nice and they do not rush you to order. They are patient and they listen to you and what you need. They let you take your time.

Stoked on this new find!!! Being Mexican and from Southern California (where there's good Mexican cuisine everywhere!) I was bummed to realize it's hard to find in Portland. But this place changed the game for me!! I ordered three tacos (chorizo, mole, and pastor). The pastor and chorizo are both made in house and the same goes for their tortillas which are organic and fresh!!! The chef and cook were friendly and am glad I was able to connect with them in Spanish. But back to the food, the blue corn tortillas were fresh and each of the tacos left me wanting more!!! They also make birria! I don't like hyping stuff up and rarely give 5 stars but this place is legit!

Carne asada, pollo and Al pastor tacos. Organic blue corn tortillas.

Both the fish and the prawns were cooked in a red sauce that was delicious! I meant to ask for blue corn tortillas but was so excited to find shrimp & fish tacos that weren't deep-fried that I forgot to ask for them. The regular corn tortillas were excellent, though, so it was not a bad mistake to make. I also had jamaica to drink and let me tell you... it was not made from a mix! It was dark, thirst-quenching, and perfectly made. Most jamaica is super sweet - this was not! I love the flavor of real hibiscus and this did not disappoint. My friends had chile relleno bowls and birria tacos, all of which was excellent. Their watermelon margaritas were tasty and refreshing! Our orders were taken by a helpful person at the cash register and the food was served quickly by a friendly server. The inside and outside areas were clean and tidy, with plenty of seating available at the outside tables. The outdoor seating area is under cover making it a good choice for both summer & winter dining. Definitely going on my "have to go back and try something else" list!

Such a small detail that makes a big difference. The Citrus Salad was super fresh, crisp, and delicious, which balanced everything out perfectly. I also tried the NA classic margarita and it was so refreshing. I loved the subtle touch of orange juice. Overall, such a lovely spot with amazing food, great vibes, and thoughtful details. I will definitely be back!

For the amount of food and the overall experience, I thought it was a great way to experience the restaurant. Ángel took care of us and made the meal even more memorable by telling us the story and inspiration behind each dish as it came out. It made the tasting feel like much more than just trying a bunch of different dishes. I'm definitely a carnivore and usually feel like a meal needs some kind of meat, but surprisingly, my favorite dish was the mole with eggplant and rice. The mole was delicious, and I genuinely didn't miss having meat on the plate. I would happily order that dish again exactly as it was. The tomates en salsa arabe were another standout. I really enjoyed how fresh the dish tasted, especially with the seasonal tomatoes they were using. I also had the carnitas tacos, which had great flavor and texture. For dessert, we had what was essentially a fried concha, and I loved that it wasn't overly sweet. It had just the right amount of sweetness for me and was a great way to finish the meal. Overall, I highly recommend doing the full tasting menu at República. For around $40 per person, you get to experience the entire menu, and if you're lucky enough to have Ángel there to walk you through the stories and concepts behind the dishes, it makes the experience that much better.

Today my wife and I enjoyed scrumptious Tacotes, one chicken and one Bok Choy with house made salsa. Extra side of yummy and creamy black bean frijoles with sour cream, butter, tortillas. Instead of desert, the Mezcal, chile and lime was refreshing. Right now open for lunch Thursday through Sunday 10-3pm. No fixed menu, changes with what's fresh - the way chef Angel loves to cook respecting what is in season. Service and ambiance is friendly and knowledgeable about the food and its origin - another reason I love dining here so I learn about what I'm eating and how it was inspired. Yes, the food plated looks so good, I am inspired to dig in. There's a reason it was recognized early in its start by Eater, Portland Monthly and the Oregonian as one of the best restaurants in the city because foodies seek out and love to go where the food experience is special - especially the chef tasting menus in the past. Now I'm watchful and ready to go back and see what the chef Angel is serving up. What else is so special is Republica was a James Beard award nominee too!
