Just moved too far away from the Chicagoland area to save my haircuts for Shana. Someone in Philly…read morewill have big shoes to fill, and I don't know if they ever could! I have been going and spreading the gospel of Shana for all the years since my last review. Because I moved to St Louis and then covid ruined my year in Chicago, I didn't get to have many haircuts with her in the past six years, but I did when I could, and the few times I've had to settle for an emergency haircut elsewhere (Chicago Chinatown, flushing new york, etc) , no one was good as her. To me, what makes her incredibly special is how great my hair can look without any effort. I am a very low maintenance person, and no one else has ever given me a haircut that looks great just by me air drying my hair lazily. Plus, if I let my hair grow out, it somehow maintains some semblance of shape for a long, long time. How!! It's magic. Nowhere else have I been able to get this. Sure this is just one person's low maintenance needs. But honestly it's a big ask for a stylist - give me a nonboring haircut, but I don't want it to look like crap when I don't style it. No one else has been able to do achieve that for me. And from the time I've spent in the waiting area/waiting for my hair to dye, etc, and seeing other clients come through, it is clear Shana strives to understand each person's needs individually. And of course she's always offering advice based on each person (that you should always listen to!) All the things I said in my previous review are true still, she is of course a skilled technician. But also magical, to me at least. And I know it's just hair! But it was always great knowing I could always rely on Shana for a great haircut, and this void has been hard to fill now that I moved. Everyone should go to Shana, especially if you have thick Asian hair like me!

I've tried a few other salons over the years, but the curls would lose their shape quickly and never had the same bounce or longevity. At Kim Sun Young Salon, the curls stay beautiful, defined, and full of life even a year later. What impresses me most is that my hair has a lot of previous damage, yet they consistently create soft, healthy-looking curls with incredible volume and movement. That level of consistency comes from true expertise. The staff is always warm, professional, and attentive, providing a genuinely high-end experience from start to finish. Exceptional craftsmanship, outstanding service, and results that last. Kim Sun Young Salon sets the standard for digital perms in Chicago. Highly recommended.

I went back and forth as to whether I wanted to write this, but I do think my experience was…read moreunfortunate and may not necessarily reflect their skill and service here, but I think it's still worth sharing. The TL;DR is that I was unable to get my hair coloring done and also got a haircut that was not very flattering. I felt I looked better when I came in vs when I came out of the salon. This was all despite the effort I made to contact this salon multiple times beforehand to ensure that they were able to do the hair that I wanted. In January, I had my hair cut and permed in Los Angeles, which I was happy with, but I wanted to also make my hair blonde with this hair style (I'm a Korean American with dark hair). I confirmed with my hairstylist in LA as well as the internet that you should wait a while to bleach your hair to space out the damage, at least ~4 weeks. I currently live in Cleveland, OH for grad school and heard there aren't many good salons in OH for Asian hair. So I did my research, found this salon in Chicago with good ratings, read through ratings, looked through photos, and then first messaged them on instagram to set an appt. I sent them reference photos of the color I wanted, plus a current selfie showing my hair to ask if what I wanted was possible. I also explained I was going to be driving in from Cleveland (took me 7 hours since I avoided tolls) so I wanted to really make sure before I made the trip. I told them also about my perm from weeks ago (it was going to be over 7 weeks since the perm for the appt day I asked for). I also called 24 hours later directly to the salon since I didn't get a response on instagram right away. The person on the phone booked me with Michelle. I then proceeded to explain my situation and told them I sent them photos on instagram. The woman on the phone tried to reassure me saying "it's okay, Michelle can do whatever color. Don't worry about it." I took their word. They also responded on instagram confirming they could book me an appt and gave me an estimate of pricing (starting around $350) and time range (3-4 hours) based on the color I wanted. The day of my appt, I show Michelle my pictures and what I want. She starts rambling about how the color I want is not possible, or needs to be bleached multiple times because my hair color is too dark. I was asking her to clarify if that meant I have to come in on different days to get it done, and she wasn't very clear and eventually just said, "It's okay, we will figure it out. For now, you need a haircut right?" So we cut my hair to a length I was satisfied with, but since it wasn't dried/styled yet, I wasn't sure what the finished product would look like yet. Then we went back to discussing color. First, she tells me, "okay, we can bleach multiple times, but it may take a long time, maybe even 6 hours. Is that ok?" I said yes (I knew it might take a long time so I purposefully asked for their earliest appt time that day). "And it's going to be around $400-500. Is that ok?" I said yes again. THEN she says, "oh, and the bleach is going to flatten your perm, so you won't have your perm anymore." This is when I was stunned and hesitated and asked for time to think. I was already starting to worry about whether the color would actually look okay on me based on Michelle's initial response to my request, but then to also not have my perm that I had paid for before but I still wanted to be a part of my overall hairstyle? I was incredibly disappointed. I was definitely ignorant of how this hair stuff worked, but that's why I tried doing my research beforehand and asked them multiple times, sending them pictures and explaining my situation BEFORE I planned a trip 7 hours away by car. I don't have many free weekends, so this was also difficult for me to schedule. Eventually I declined the color because I didn't want to risk not liking the final color AND losing my perm. But I wish the staff, all the people I talked to here, told me BEFORE I made the trip to Chicago, and BEFORE she cut my hair. I honestly would not have gotten my haircut had I known I wasn't going to get color. I know cheaper hair salons for hair cuts in the area and might've opted for another place if I wanted one (my hair was already short, but the haircut price was still $70). The staff didn't necessarily act rude or anything, but they clearly failed to take my situation into consideration despite all of my effort and wasted my time, money and energy. And honestly I don't like the hair cut. I look like Johnny Depp from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; the lack of layers is not flattering. I have to pull my hair back daily to look decent. I'm just sad this happened and they may be competent at hair, but the inconsiderate communication was really disappointing.

I booked a second appt for a fill in three weeks prior to it. I was told an hour and a half prior to that appt that she had to cancel. Took a half day off of work so I can make that appt. on a Friday. I sent three texts after that with no response until Tuesday late evening. We agreed on the following week, having hardly any eyelashes at this point, that she could do 9 am on Friday. Then was told on Thursday that she can't do Friday, since she had a brunch to go to. Who doesn't check calendars before booking something? Then she said she could only do 9:30 am on Saturday. Yep, after that was booked, was told the next day that she could only do 8. So, once again, I switched my other appt that I had booked for something else to make 8 am work. You guessed it, was told the night prior after 10 pm that she can't do 8 am the next day. No response to see if it could be rescheduled for a fifth time. I have never dealt with any sort of "business" cancelling 4 appts!! She was told several times that after my initial appt being canceled that I had a huge holiday party to go to 8 days later and she still couldn't keep any of those appts. So here I am with no eyelashes and too late at this point to get in anywhere else. If she just told me upfront she couldn't make any of these appointments, I would have just booked with a different business.

We've been happy with our treatment and stylist, but a friend recently switched to Jasmine and said the results were better than ever. My daughter had 2 days home between summer adventures so I figured it was worth trying Jasmine. She was booked when I reached out, but then the week of let me know she had a cancellation and could take her - whoo hoo! The entire process took 4.5 hours, which is long, but crazy enough less than the 5+ hours we usually spend doing this treatment. Jasmine herself was was super friendly and confident that my daughters hair would be better than ever with this treatment. I was hopeful, but skeptical. She got to work right away with a few assistants helping with the process. When I picked up my daughter I was shocked how straight and smooth her hair was after just running a blow dryer thru it for a few minutes. My daughter was thrilled, although she hoped it would be a little wavy after braids since she doesn't like it perfectly straight. She took off for camp the next day, but the only letter I've gotten in the mail is (no joke) "my hair is totally straight." And based on the camp pictures I've been amazed by how well it took to her hair. It looks a little wavy at the ends and I'm guessing she's likely sleeping in braids to get it to curl a bit. We usually have to do this treatment every 5 months. Jasmine thought every 6-12 months, but our roots grow in so curly that I'd be shocked if we could go that long. I'm also interested in trying Jasmine for the magic sleek, but she thought other treatments would be better for my blonde (highlighted) hair like the keratin express. It's tough to please a 13 year old when it comes to hair (and other things), but I think Jasmine did it!

I was cautious at first since I've gone to a korean hair salon and paid $75 for a haircut only to look like a christmas tree in the middle of July (needless to say it was in a bun all year long until it grew out) There was only one guy to take care of me and my two friends. We each wanted something different done. I wanted a haircut, one friend wanted a perm and another wanted her hair dyed. I was the last to be done but it didn't wear this hairstylist a bit. He took time to cut each of my layers and checked over and over to see the "flow" of my natural waves. He cut more of my bangs then before and ive received so much more compliments than before. I have no idea what happened to my review so here it is again…read more The receptionist sets the tone for the whole business. It is an extremely important job. It is not easy. You are dealing with many personalities. A really good receptionist knows how to make a customer always want to come back. Here is my experience tonight. I am horrified. I called yesterday. I gave the salon more than 24 hours notice just as I was told to do. I spoke to a lovely receptionist. I explained to her that heavy storms were coming in with many warnings. I did not want to drive in this weather. They were predicting tornados, hail and heavy winds. She was absolutely lovely to talk to and understood. I also explained to her that I did not want to get a fee for rescheduling. She said she understood and would take care of it. She also told me to call in the morning and let them know once I saw what the weather was like. I followed her advice and immediately called in the morning. I rescheduled my appointment. No problem, At 6:30 tonight Gail called (the other receptionist.) as obnoxious as can be and told me I did not follow the rules. She was going to place a fee on me. I believe it was $25. She kept saying we talked about this and would not stop. I honestly thought she was a broken record. I followed the rules. I did nothing wrong. I will tell you the right does not know what the left is doing. There is no communication between receptionists. This was a power trip and under no circumstances she was going to win. She was determined. That was obvious. Salons are customer service oriented. You have to be this way if you are going to keep your customers. They want the customers to be relaxed by their services. I don't know if Gail got off the wrong side of the bed or if something was going on in her life. She sure took it out on me. I am not going to tolerate this behavior. Nobody should. I wonder if the owners know how she is treating the customers. She cancelled my appointment because she said I did not follow the rules. At this point, I hung up on her. Nobody should ever be treated this way under any circumstances. It was horrifying to say the least. If you want to be abused by a receptionist then I would recommend going here. I am just flabbergasted by the way I was treated. I am in the salon every month. I am not a walk in. I am also surprised that neither of the owners reached out to me. This says it all!
