Sometime we get caught up in the moment... Like for instance I'm an alternative rock music kind of girl, but when I lived in Eastern Washington for school there was about 5 months where I went country swing dancing every week and traversed the Pullman hills with the latest yeehaw jams on my iPod. (We all have our shameful little secrets right?) I suppose that's what happens when you're submerged in an environment... mannerisms you don't typically align yourself with are suddenly allowable. I attribute this same phenomenon to the occasional culinary situation where I randomly think "Of course I can handle spicy food!" Yeah... nope. Luckily I've learned to just say no to "extra spicy" and go for the mild. It never ruins my meal- always Pad Thai- here. I'm not a huge fan of peanut sauce, but this place sits well in my book. It's a nice little sit down restaurant with a full bar and happy hour, though I usually grab my lunch to go to get away from the rush. I was in the area for a convention and Thai food sounded good, so off we went! We got there a little after 3 which is when their dinner menu starts. Why is it so expensive?! My boyfriend got Pad Thai (as hot as you can make it) and I got Pad Thai (3 stars). Keep in mind, my boy and I can handle our spices. When we got our plates I took one bite and said "Whoooo, thats spicy!" My boyfriend thought we might have gotten the wrong plates, so we switched. Still crazy spicy. We couldn't even finish our food because our faces were melting off. We decided they were too lazy to make two separate Pad Thais, so they just made one really spicy one and gave it to us. Our server was nice to us, but VERY rude to a young girl who came in. The girl ended up leaving looking a little dejected. Overall, meh. Big ol' meh. I'd try another place before this. read more

I walked into this place and immediately thought to myself... "Self, I finally have a decent and affordable Thai/Laotian place in Vancouver!!! as opposed to my Thai/Cambodian or even regular Thai place in vancouver!" (and still no Chinese food... hmmm, pity.) Then I looked at the menu and saw the prices... 9-14 dollars for Lunch? F*CK THAT, I am gone! As I started to leave, he immediately knew why and showed me the super secret lunch menu (Thanks AS*HOLE, nice try!) I sat there eying everyone's food coming out of the kitchen and it was all Pad Thai... all of it! 5 people in front of me got HUGE steaming helpings of chicken and sprouts and noodles and lime and nuts. It LOOKED delicious and it sounded like everyone else was enjoying their Pad Thai... the only problem is that I detest Pad Thai... it is the Thai culinary equivalent of cheap bangers and mash or a god damned Big Mac!!! (If you like Pad Thai (or McDonald's) you might want to try this place out... everybody else seemed to enjoy it.) So I ordered the Evil Prince special and was quickly informed that it wasn't a lunch special.... and neither was the seafood house special stir fry... WTF (WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT - for my airplane friends... not that there is anything wrong with that...) FINE! I ordered red curry with Chicken... Fingers crossed! about 5 minutes later the waiter came out with a plate of rice and (Maybe) and 6-8 ounce serving of red curry with a 'touch' of chicken and undercooked vegetables... He wasn't happy when i said, "Excuse me sir, I ordered the 2 pound plate of rice." either that, or he didn't speak enough English to understand me... coin flip. It all seemed too BAD to be true... but then I remembered my grandmothers words... "if you don't have something nice to say, Yelp it!" I was originally going to rate this a 1-2 star place... mostly because I just paid to eat a NINE dollar scoop of curry with 3 ounces of meat (think chicken wings from ethiopia... and not fire on the mountain) Then i started thinking about everything else the place offered. #1 - Decent Ambiance... nice artwork and the usual Thai stuff (but i am sure it was partly Laotian) #2 - Decent Prices... 7 bucks for a 26 ounce serving of rice. :) #3 - Much Better than decent flavor. In fact, It tasted good, so i can't complain about the flavor... Actually, it was VERY tasty. I will come back again to try the dinner sized menu and some of the specials... maybe even try the Soup and HOPE it isn't served in either a Ramekin or Thimble, then re-yelp Tigers Garden... but for now... that seems a long way off. If you're ever in the Vancouver area, give the folks at Tiger's Garden some love. First of all, their curries are da bomb dot com. My fave: Evil Prince. Secondly, I just witnessed a couple of white folks waltz in and play good cop/bad cop returning food and complaining for their own selves not having a microwave for reheating their to-go order?! YES, you read that right: they ordered TO GO knowing damn well they don't have a microwave, and I guess are too lazy to use a stove? IDK. But they had the owner near tears with how creepy they behaved. She was a kind and thoughtful person who noticed I bowed because it's sort of habit when you're a Buddhist, and she told me about how much she misses visiting Thailand. Anyway. I stuck around in my car until the meanies left the block. They claimed they lost their keys in the 10 steps between their car and the front of the restaurant after cop-knocking on the glass for no reason cause the front door is open - hello! - and they were just being generally off kilter. I call you-know-what. My spidey sense went off the charts. Some malice was underway, and I wasn't about to leave anyone in possible danger. And before you doubt me, I'm from Florida and it pays off in instances like this, believe you me. BTW them HOT veggie eggrolls permeated my car, and I shamelessly devoured them in all of their peppery goodness as I waited for the tweedle team from hell to get lost. Tiger's Garden. having narrowly escaped the evil clutches of JOE's CRAB SHACK (too long a wait), we stumbled on parking place right across the street from the TIGER's GARDEN and took that as a sign from the dinner gods. we were mostly right. i had the evening's special, a chicken stir-fry dish with mango chunks, and it was pretty good -- lots of mango and fresh veggies and nicely spiced. would say the wife's YELLOW CURRY (she gave me a bite) was barely okay. the kids split a slice of MUD PIE but fell on it in such a feeding frenzy i was afraid to stick a fork in and risk loosing body parts. i'm guessing it was pretty good. I was on the fence about giving this place a two or a one, it truthfully does not deserve the high rating it has. I've been to Tiger's Garden a few times now, always for their Thai food, and have never been impressed by anything other than the location. The place I wanted to eat tonight was already closed though, so I decided to give them another shot. Unfortunately for my wallet, it's ended up with this review. So far, my experience with the "Thai" portion of the menu has been underwhelming. The food is bland and inauthentic. The papaya salad is weak, the pad thai is basic, "extra spicy" means: "Spicy-McChicken spicy," and the peanut sauce is basically melted peanut butter with sugar added. But I wasn't in the mood for Thai tonight, I was in the mood for Chinese, a culture which is actually distinct from Thai outside of suburban America. That should've been my first warning sign too. I know better than to eat at a place that claims to serve authentic: Thai, Chinese, Laotian and Japanese food. I mean really, if you can read the previous sentence and still wonder if the food here is anything special... well... what can I say? I was hungry. So, they get the second star in the rating because the restaurant is clean and because somebody actually served me. But something happened to me tonight that I cannot reconcile: After going through the menu and ordering (I was getting takeout), I went up to pay and was told that I had accidentally been given, and ordered from, the lunch menu. So, even though someone was already making my food, and I'd already been waiting, I was subject to "dinner prices." I want to make it clear here, this wasn't a "lunch special" menu, it was just a menu with the exact same stuff, at different prices, for a different time of the day. So, how much does orange chicken with yaki soba noodles (I know, I know... Japanese) cost at Tiger's Garden? Twenty-seven dollars. Yup, in the end, I foolishly paid TWENTY-SEVEN DOLLARS for a serving of greasy noodles, some soggy fried chicken soaked in orange juice, and a handful of those little crinkle-cut carrots from the fifties that are supposed to look fancy. We've enjoyed this restaurant twice now. It's very nice inside (I was worried for the attached bar, but that's not even a concern). The food was very nicely done - I've had the Pineapple fried rice with cashews and chicken and it's really a unique mix. The menu isn't as broad as some of the other Thai/Chinese restaurants I've been to, but there is vegetarian options all the way through it for my husband. I go to Tiger's Garden when I feel I've done something pretty awesome and deserve to spoil myself (when I moved last year, I treated my movers to lunch at Tiger's Garden), or when I'm down in the dumps and need a good pick me up. Their Sleeping Prawns are crispy, always perfectly cooked and come with an excellent sweet and sour dipping sauce. I'm always a little bummed when I order it and no one else at the table orders themselves an app because I know... I just know I'm only going to get one of those delicious little crustaceans. Do try the sticky rice. Their entrees are pretty rock solid. I've flirted with their curry selection and they're all excellent with two standouts: the mussamun curry and the excitingly named Evil Prince. Service is good, but then again, service has to be pretty awful for me to notice. The waitresses are always patient and willing to explain a dish to you. So why not five stars? Well, two reasons. One, they offer a good variety of cocktails by Vancouver standards and they're mixed so well that my friends and I often choose TG just to have a good drink with dinner (do have the Oatmeal Cookie), but I've gone several times and not been able to get one because the bartender is not available. Also, the background music isn't great, which is unfortunate because the ambiance is nice. It's dark tones and soft light make it a good spot for a date, especially if the music is off. read more

Went here as a last second decision as we were walking somewhere else. What a GREAT choice! The service was immediate and attentive. We made our choice and our dishes were served in less than 15 minutes. I had the Garlic Shrimp. Large, succulent shrimp served over a variety of steamed veggies. I love this place! Great food. The restaurant is quiet and within walking distance to other neat places. Food and service aside, I have to talk about another family that came in. There was a mom, grandma and two kids. The kids were unruly so the mom got her phone and started playing Looney Tunes on the phone with the volume cranked. So, there I am a table away enjoying my chicken curry with cartoon music going on. They ended up leaving fast because the kid wasn't quite entertained enough. My wife and I love this place. It is the only Thai restaurant we go to! I don't think we have had anything there we didn't like. The Jungle soup is delicious, and we usually get it with just vegetables (perfect for when you're not feeling well). I will have to admit, sometimes they are inconsistent when it comes to the spiciness of their food. We like spicy, and medium is usually more mild for us. But every time we order HOT, its like eating lava. So our workaround is to order Medium, and ask for a side of chili paste (which is what they add to make it more spicy). Went here for lunch on a Sunday. The place was empty but I had eaten here once in the past and liked it. The lunch specials were reasonably priced. The food came fresh and well presented. I'll submit photos. I had the Masman Curry and my wife had mixed vegetables with chicken, both off the lunch menu. I've gone to this Thai place 4 times. The first time I had the pad Thai and it was pretty good small portions, 4 shrimp, and kind of high in price, but it's close to my work. I tried it again with the pad Thai and the experience remained he same. Nothing spectacular, but convenient. Today I decide to try the avocado salad rolls. I had to bring them back after getting an order to go and got back to work. I can't eat orange wilting lettuce and don't appreciate paying 8$ for these. read more

Decent place in downtown Vancouver. The service is a bit slow and not well organized: no refill on water for example and you have to grab the attention of someone to order food or get the bill... That could use some improvement. The staff is however friendly, no doubt, with a lot of smiles... The food has interesting and nice flavors and that's what saves the experience at Tigers garden. Prices are on the low side: $12 or so for dinner dishes. Portions are not overwhelming. We had the yum salad which I liked a lot with a lot of cilantro and a nice spicy lime dressing; the crying tiger which was basically a steak, pass on that one; and a salmon marinated with again quite a bit of cilantro, nice dish. Overall, a nice experience and a good quality for the price asked. Nothing out of the ordinary though, yet a safe bet. read more

All kidding aside, this is a solid choice for Tai food in the Couve. I love the location, and inside the dining is casual and sumptuous at the same time. Hubs got pad tai which was delicious. I ordered Pork Basil Fried Rice (per Yelp suggestion). My fried rice was so hot I couldn't believe it. No one asked if I wanted it mild, medium or spicy....it came out on fire. I met a friend here for lunch and enjoyed the experience. The restaurant was busy, but not too loud. Our lunch was served very quickly, but not rushed in any way. The appetizer chicken wings with sweet/sour sauce is not to be missed. Delicious without the heaviness of a buffalo wing. If there was any con to the day, it was that the lunch menu was pretty limited. I had to order off the dinner menu to get what I wanted. So I paid a bit more.
