I asked for a high life and a bartender's handshake. He gave me the former and then shook my hand, which was great and unexpected, but then poured me the fernet (more like 3 fernets worth of fernet in one glass) after I explained that I wanted fernet. And between the wine I got for my girlfriend and my own "pick me" order, it came out to 15 bucks before tip. What a wholesome place. This is one of the chillest, cheapest, and least pretentious bars I've ever been to, especially in Manhattan. It's a bar. You pay money, you get drinks. It's small, but it's cozy. It seems like it'd be a cash only joint, but they take card. Do what people have been doing for hundreds of years, and enjoy the simplest version of the "going to a bar" experience that money can buy. And then do it twice because their prices are stuck in 2004. read more

An actual true dive bar in the east village where you can still get drinks not on happy hour for $6 or $7. These are a dime a dozen. There are so many things to say and unspoken things to not say about the spot. It's either filled to the brim with people and you may see a bar scuffle or two or three or it's relatively empty. But overall, I've had a decent time personally myself. Although, that's probably dependent on if I can get a seat or not. They serve incredibly generous pours on wine that I have to add even if it is table wine it's the same price as the beer here and that's unheard of at most bars. Very local, dive, no frills bar which feels like a distant memory in NYC these days. The happy hour is a STEAL. And what I really like about this bar is that it's on the older side. I watched a group of 20s come in, look at the crowd, then immediately turn around. It was my happiest moment ever. Got to catch up with friends and very chill. Probably the worst bar experience I've had in the city . The curly haired bartender which I think his name is Bailey because I saw it on another receipt that was left - if not then the guy behind the bar on 10/21/23 at 10pm, anyway, this bartender has the absolute worst attitude - extremely unprofessional, rude and sarcastic, but not in a good way - just straight up mean : if you keep him on staff and treats other customers the way he treated us the bar will prob go out of business esp on a Saturday night. The bar is cute, the music is a chill vibe but Bailey seemed to ruin all this for me. I walked in waiting for a friend and ordered water to hydrate because we planned to get a lot of drinks. Bailey saw me sit down, didn't ask me anything. I asked him for water, he said okay. He proceeded to help everyone else at the bar so a few min later I asked for my water he rudely gave a smirk and said "oh you want that water" made it, walked away. My friend came, again, didn't pay any attention to either of us. Finally when he decided to, we ordered 2 drinks - 1 vodka soda and 1 gin and tonic. He took the order, then proceeded to walk to the other side of the bar, took more orders, made more drinks, ignored us until I said "hey so do you plan to make these drinks?!" He replies with a smirk and sarcastically says, "oh thanks for reminding me". I get my drink, and I promise you it had zero vodka. I didn't watch him make it, but this is the absolute worst drink I have ever had. I asked my friend to try it and he also agreed there was zero vodka, so I tell Bailey and he proceeds to say he poured an ounce and a half into the drink...this was my first drink of the night. If there was an ounce and a half of vodka it would taste like vodka and smell like vodka which it had neither. I asked him to remake it. He looked at me and walked away, never remade it, never asked anything. He also took my friend's money for both drinks and assumed the leftover cash was all his. He walked away and put it in the register and when my friend asked he said "I thought you did the hand gesture to keep it" I have been to plenty of bars in this city and never have I experienced this kind of behavior from any bartender. Either he has zero memory or recollection or he's just purposely being a complete incompetent a**hole that comes off as though he hates job and hates the people that go the bar. He possessed zero hospitality or customer service skills. If I was the owner of this bar I would suggest to send in a secret shopper or just cut him off your staff - this kind of behavior should not be tolerated - It left a bad taste in my mouth, and unfortunately it wasn't from the glass of vodka-less seltzer I received. read more

I posted this on Google and sent it into their inbox - if I get a response I'll update here: Hello - I had an incredibly unfortunate experience at your bar around 4:40pm earlier today, December 7th. I came in with a group of five friends to meet two who were already at the bar (I believe they had just arrived minutes earlier). Immediately upon entering (I mean immediately - I had one foot in the door) one of your bartenders screamed "No! Get out, we're not doing this today." A friend of mine continued past me to the bar asked what had been done (as we had just arrived) and she (your bartender) yelled that she "wasn't doing any of the Santacon bullshit" because of "rowdy groups" and "low tips". We explained that we were not affiliated with Santacon (we couldn't be, as it's next week), and that we were not being 'rowdy' (again impossible, as we had just walked in). After seeing her scream at my friend, I approached the bar. Only one of us was wearing a Santa hat, so I asked her if the "tip"/money issue was perhaps actually about our race (most of us in the group were Black; assuming that people of color do not have money is a common, deeply racist assumption), and offered to leave if that was the case (we have no business patronizing a racist establishment, nor does anyone). She yelled at me again, this time about being trans and not liking the election result (I had not mentioned the election, or her gender identity, and I don't see how either was relevant). She then pointed at a Black, lighter skinned friend of mine and called her a "fucking white girl". She followed up by saying that she couldn't be racist because "she's dating a Black man". We left immediately and won't be returning. I hope I don't have to explain how many different levels of inappropriate--and unfortunately, deeply racist--these remarks were. I was so disappointed to have this experience, especially given how excited we all were to try Tile Bar based on the write up in NY Mag and great reviews online. I'll add that I've been in this city for nearly a decade, and have never experienced anything close to the outright aggression, rudeness, and racism that came out from behind your bar today. I really hope that your management team might take this as an opportunity to reconsider how you treat customers, and do much better. In the meantime, I will be taking my business elsewhere and recommending that all of my friends of color do the same. Totally unacceptable. read more

Bad neighbors, a few months ago a group of bikers that were at tIke bar had water or something thrown on them from the apartment above tile bar. they proceeded to break into the building and tried to break down an elderly woman's door, threatened to kill her. whether or not she did is irrelevant, they then proceeded to trash the whole block. My apt front was trashed , property damage and egged. Tile bar then proceeded to go to other businesses on the block like abraco and tried saying the elderly woman started it and they refused to give up any info to the neighborhood on who these bikers are, for this reason we have contacted our local council woman and have also sent in complaints to the business bureau. read more

This is a great place in the east village that feels like untouched East village for years! It has that vintage feel, plus a great jukebox which is a plus to play your own music. The drinks are extremely cheap which means this is a great place to pregame or end the night or even just come after work on a weekday. The bartenders seem to have a cult following and friendship with lots of their regulars from what I see on Instagram. That's pretty cool. Good vibes overall read more

Out and about in the East Village for my birthday, my group of 11 walked on past a packed-to-the-walls Blue & Gold and came across Tile Bar (I actually have no clue if that's the official name of this snug watering hole; the only identifying feature is exposed tile along the outside) When we pulled up, the lone bartender was outside so we made ourselves comfortable indoors. Very comfortable, since we were the only customers. Boasting a pretty decent selection of liquors, as well as a few craft beers on tap and by bottle (not many places offer up New Belgium's Heavy Melon. Or, for that matter, Coppola Cellars champagne-in-a-can). Couple that with a jukebox running from classic rock to classical and you've got yourself a fine place to idle the hours away. read more

So I went through some internal struggles before finally deciding to publish this review in fear of blowing up the spot of one of the best happy hours in the East Village. But my love for Tile Bar, and desire for them to succeed superseded my selfishness. First off, technically this small corner bar is called WCOU Radio but everybody calls it Tile Bar; I'm completely alright that the clientele is generally so inebriated that they remember it for the flooring. Throw in a big looming wooden bar, a few tables and a large classic rock jukebox and you've officially done the tour. Oh, and don't miss the old photos along the wall of what the East Village looked like back in the late 19th Century - very cool. And now onto the real reason you stop in your tracks while strolling down 1st Avenue: from 5-8pm every day (yes, weekends too) they offer well drinks for $2.50 and beers for $3.50. Yes, all beers. It's a classic, it's cash only and a little divey but it's certainly worth noting that the bathrooms here are incredibly clean and well-lit. How happily unpredictable of them. read more

It was so awesome I kept researching in on Yelp to figure it out. :) When we went in, completely at random, to get a drink on a Saturday night at about 5 we were amazed to find that a local beer (Brooklyn Ale, I think it was) and a gin and tonic was $5.50. Total. No, that's not a typo. We bought 4 rounds just to make sure. On our way out, pretty faded, at almost 8, we asked the bartender why it was so cheap, and she noted it was because it was Happy Hour from 5-8. What a deal! We didn't expect to find such a good deal in NYC. There's not much special about the bar, and it wasn't super-happening. When we got there, there were only about 5 other people there. As the time went on, more people came, but I'm sure we left before prime time. But boy were we pleased! You'll know you're in the right place if they have a mini leg-lamp in the back corner (yes, like the one in A Christmas Story). read more

HORRIBLE experience. Bartender was extremely rude and turned us away saying our ids were fake--they are not. Pretentious atmosphere. As a bar you should have an id scanner. She didn't even make the effort to call over another employee to check our ids. If you're in your early twenties, there are plenty of other fun places in the area to take your business to without being condescended. Go to International Bar across the street. read more

As others noted, this isn't necessarily a destination spot, but Tile Bar is definitely OK for a cheap drink or two. We came here after a nearby volleyball game for a round of pints before going elsewhere. The bartender was a bit awkward, making weird jokes, but she was trying to be nice and friendly. There were five decent beers on tap, and all but one of them were a measly $5; the last one was only $4. The atmosphere is very bland - the back bar area was mirrored and had some nice wood trim, but it's like they forgot to decorate the other three walls. Music was a mix of jukebox and the bartender's iPod - both were good for the short time we were there. read more

Cash Only Dive Bar. I have no idea how I walked past this bar for 10 years. No idea. One day, leaving Big Bar, we decided to go out for one last bar and figured out this place was bar. Atmosphere is cool. Dingey but not that dingey great music. Varied crowd. Looked like a few freshman were there, mixed with Dads in their 40s and their kids. Totally interesting. Which wasn't interesting was the way our bartender treated us. Must have thought we were yuppies or something because she was down right rude. We walked in sat down, said Hey and she ignored us for 10 minutes. Frustrating. She finally came and asked us what we wanted, but barked "Y'KNOW IT'S CASH ONLY." Yeah, duh lady. That's why I have this twenty in my hand. Took another 20 minutes to get our drinks. Before we were served ours, she took some other drink orders and served them first. Wtf. Not sure what her problem was. I guess when she finally realized we weren't dicks, she chilled off a bit. Despite her being a jerk, I've come back a few times and had nicer bartenders. Super cheap drinks Alert! This is another divey and cheap bar in East Village. Beer here is about $4 to $5 and a whiskey on the rock is only $5.50 and it is a big glass. The bartenders are friendly and the bar reminds you of an old radio station. It is never overly crowded so it is a good place to hang with friends and chat without having your ears blasted off by some loud club music. They don't have food here other than the bar stool snacks lying around. Will be back for some alcohol! read more

Nice place, rather dark, but straightforward type of bar. Even on a Sunday night the bar itself gets crowded, but there are some tables that are sufficient for sitting as well. The tragedy is that it took me so long to discover Tile Bar. The benefit of this tragedy is that after all these years without what is now my favorite bar in the city, I am able to relish its existence. Happening upon what could very well be the city's best happy hour, a friend and I took full advantage of it at one of the tables lining the wall opposite to the bar. While so many bars get their seating wrong, Tile Bar gets it right. Not only are the tables the perfect distance from the bar, but there is also more than enough space to pass through to the back. Furthermore, the bartender was easygoing and friendly, and the music was a blast from the past. I definitely plan to return. read more
