This is the place I come with all my theater geeks after a show or whatnot and we take over the bar so I can't really speak about the other patrons, if there were any. Four stars for an unpretentious hideout in the East Village on a Saturday night (and it's not way over on Avenue C) Jukebox gets you rockin. The stiff drinks might even get you dancing. I go here because a friend of mine in the restaurant business comes here with her restaurant industry friends every Saturday night when they get out of work. So if you're looking to talk food (or trying to get a job in a restaurant) this could be the place. I once had an hour long conversation with a guy she worked with named Roberto, talking about the Mexican food in Puebla. He went to the bathroom and I ended up talking another half hour with Alberto, another restaurant guy. It was probably about food but I can't remember any details from that point on. I don't think I've ever come in here before 1am on a Saturday night, so my faculties for judging refinery and quality are usually diminished at that point. It's a good place to start or finish the night. It's right around from Blue & Gold, which shares its divey aesthetic, but Tile Bar doesn't get as crowded. The drinks are as inexpensive as you'll find in the East Village. Unfortunately, it's not a good place to meet more than 4 or 5 people, as you'll be hard pressed to find enough room to have your whole crowd interact. When it's my friend's turn to buy a round, I get him to order stupid shit that will make him look like an ass. When I saw a sign stating Champagne By the Glass, I knew that's what I had to get. Well, he tried to order a round of champagne, but the bartender informed us that the sign was old, and they don't carry champagne any more. The next sign I saw said they had hot sake. Hahah sake from a dive bar? Anyway, we drank all the sake they had left (which was about four or five cruets). So next time some ass goes in there to order hot sake, he or she will be shit out of luck. read more

One of those forgettable bars that lack character. We stopped by after a big night at a friend's Apt in the East Village - Pants-Swapping, Barking like Dogs on Hands & Knees, Stripping, Patron Shots, Videotaping, Playing "Fetch" - and the party sort of died as soon as we got there. Not sure why we even ended up at Tile. But as you can see, the time at Tile was simply not memorable and I'm having a real hard time coming up with anything to say about the place . . . with so many fun bars in the City, why bother? read more

There are so many things that I love about this bar, top three: 1. There isn't a sign and it appears to have been named Tile Bar by the people who go there because of it's only identifying characteristic of partial tile on the outside. 2. The happy hour is cheap and any other time the drinks are very reasonably priced. 3. Nice neighborhood bar and they had Sofia Coppola's Champagne in a Can (it comes with a bendy straw on the side)! However, the bartender seemed a bit of a milquetoast. I spent a great Saturday night here after catching a comedy show a few blocks away. I was traveling with a pretty sizable group (about 10 of us) and we were looking for a bar where we didn't have to shove and shout our way in. Tile bar fit the bill. Love this place. Quality NYC bar. Great Happy Hour. Love most of the bartenders - especially Claire. However, I will turn around walk out if "Sour Puss" is there. Who is "Sour Puss" you ask? Can you guess what type of flooring this bar has? If you guessed shag carpeting guess again. Tile bar has a real vintage dive vibe complete with a checkered tiled floor, large mirrors behind the bar, and century old photos of the city around for decor. This is an extremely simple bar with not much going for it. That being said, if you come during happy hour and can actually grab a seat then you're in for a real treat. Unfortunately the relatively small bar fills up rather quickly so it's easier said than done. During happy hour (until 8pm), all beers are $2.50-$3.50, wine is an astounding $2.50, and all other liqueur starts at $3. If you can't make it for happy hour the prices are still amazing as all beer is $3-5. There are few places in NY with prices like this. I don't even care that it's cash only. read more

Perfect East Village bar. A little divey, a little romantic (if your into that sort of thing), great music, great bartenders, great drinks. A lot of local characters come herenow- which makes conversation more interesting than at most spots. Prices extremely reason, but bring cash! Good for people watching if you sit by window. Not much to criticize here ... Every now and then random people discover this bar and are awful. But the bar can't be blamed for that. read more

I had to check into this spot to find out its name, as the name was nowhere to be found. Made it tough to tell a friend where to meet us. I had a fun night here, stopped in after a free comedy show nearby with some of the comedians. It was crowded and hard to hear at times, but it was a Friday night. The crowd seemed to be made up of tolerable people and the bartender was fast and helpful. I wish my drinks were a little less tiny. Maybe that was a good thing, because I wound up having to escort a friend home who drank a bit more than I did. Either way, both of us had fun, I just remembered how I got home when I woke up the next day. this dive bar was truly an excellent find that until now had been UNDETECTED, UNEXPECTED for me. cash only is completely fine with me. it's so cheap to drink here. it's kind of a mix of folks from all walks of life. last time there was a girl in her 20s reading Art of War while some older folks pounded shots and ate cake from a nearby bakery. yes, this is exactly the type of bar where that happens, and it makes me quite happy. definitely will be back, as if that's even a question. read more

I was on my way to International Bar (a favorite) and decided to check this place out first. It was early Saturday evening, happy hour. Simply put, an odd place populated with a few odd people. Harmless but odd. I kinda' felt that I was on a field trip. It had the usual weirdos and a few of the unusual too. As i was soaking everything in, this guy came in and sat next to me. He was dressed up, three quarter trench coat and cool European glasses (the kind I never seem to find). He stayed for less than ten minutes. After he left, a few of the natives made fun of Mr. Trenchcoat and his fashion sense. They were becoming restless. A few spots down was the new odd couple, a burned out rock n roller (tattoos, rings, frizzy blond hair) and his grotesque fat groupie monster yeti thing. These two looked like they did a lot of partying in the 70's and it seems the party was still going on. The bar itself is municipal. If you took the stools and the bar out, this space could be used to sell floor coverings, light fixtures or some other household item, maybe tiles. Behind the bar was a giant mirror with the words "champagne by the glass" and "sake". It had to be a joke. Getting sake here would be like buying your gf's birthday present at Duane Reade, lame and probably dangerous. The happy hour here makes drinks super duper cheap. Well drinks are $2.50. (Not €2.50) You could get a little brain damaged for only 20 bucks. If well booze isn't your thing, this place has a good selection of the top shelf stuff too. If I had based this on my first time here I probably would've given it 4 stars but last night it took way too long to get the bartenders attention who was just chatting with her friend in the corner and it's REALLY annoying when a bar is cash only. Yes, there's an ATM outside but I ended up just getting a beer ($5) without tip because I wanted to avoid the fee. Our favorite east village bar. There's no sign above the door, so you just have to know where it is to find it. They have to cheapest drinks & best bartenders. There's atypical crowd that hangs out here so you'll see familiar faces every time. It's cash only but there are several ATMs near by. It's not a bad walk from the subway either. One small TV in the corner for you sports fans but there was a 90's style CD juke box that looked awfully tempting to fill up with songs. Small sized bar. Not great for huge groups, but you can definitely commandeer the tables and chairs to serve your needs. Bathrooms are small. Drinks are cheap. Asian mullets and devil horns. Don't go looking aimlessly up for the words "tile" nor "bar," because you will see neither. You'll find this bar through its nameless brown front with a few actual tiles. Having walked by possibly hundreds of times, we finally went in for the first time. Lo and behold, inside is a warm, neat dive bar. Neither grungy nor overcrowded. While I sometimes have a likeness for a simple $3 PBR, they thankfully have Southampton Double White (a heftier wheat ale), Peak Organic, and many other micros. There is an expansive, eclectic range of artists on the jukebox and thankfully, someone before we got in had put on AC/DC. I was immediately transported back to high school, rocking an Asian mullet and throwing devil horns everywhere. I now have a sudden urge to dress like Beavis. The walls are covered with early 1900s photographs. It's breathtaking to see how much our glorious city has changed. Above the jukebox is a neon light clock that keeps pulling my eyes towards it, reminding me of the one at WXOU Radio Bar in Meatpacking. Now on 1st Ave., exists a trifecta of some of my favorite bars in the area, International, Coal Yard, and this new addition. Grab a beer with pals, create some memories. If I am remembering correctly, I ended up at this bar after a lovely dinner at Luzzo's down the block. Local bar with a little bit of a dive-y feel. Pitchers of Brooklyn were $11 or $12...Seriously?? That's awesome!! And apparently I proved that by drinking a few too many. I've liked Tile Bar for a good, long time. Here are some reasons: 1. It's dark, 2. It's inexpensive, 3. Odds are, I can sit down, 4. Their jukebox is worth its weight, and 5. Great little dive bar that has some of the cheapest drinks in the city. Well lit, great service (except for one cruddy bartender--she's just plain nasty). They have incredible deals for happy hour. This is no longer a dive bar as of 2016. They used to have $5 pints of Guiness, IPAs, and other good beers but they just raised all the prices to $7 a pint. Not sure why they would raise prices almost 50% with no explanation. But it's not the good deal it used to be. With tip, $8 a pint. And the bartender (Sat night, brown hair, 40yo woman, whoever you are) was sour faced and not friendly. No thanks. RIP Tile Bar. read more

I love this bar -- the drinks are good (and cheap) and the place is one of the last of its kind in Manhattan. Just read Vanishing New York: How a Great City Lost Its Soul and suddenly worried that this bar might no longer be in existence. So glad to see that it is. Tile Bar is a good standby in the neighborhood. It doesn't really have much ambience (I think the tile is the killer) but the barkeeps are usually friendly and the drink prices are VERY reasonable. It's also known as WCOU Radio. I feel like they're known for their jukebox or something, but I have yet to check that out. I like this place. read more
